Michael Bassik

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are an interdisciplinary lab focused on two major areas:(1) we seek to understand mechanisms of cancer growth and drug resistance in order to find new therapeutic targets(2) we study mechanisms by which macrophages and other cells take up diverse materials by endocytosis and phagocytosis; these substrates range from bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells to drugs and protein toxins. To accomplish these goals, we develop and use new technologies for high-throughput functional genomics.

Timothy J Batchelor

BioDr. Timothy Batchelor is a Global Emergency Medicine and Advanced Emergency Ultrasound dual Fellow, and Clinical Instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Batchelor completed his emergency medicine residency at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He completed medical school at Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida, and was a member of the SELECT curriculum during his four years there. Prior to his clinical medicine career he was a fire service lieutenant, prehospital EMS provider, and accredited EMS and firefighter instructor.
He has ongoing research in Rwanda looking at the impacts of emergency medicine resident Point-of-Care Ultrasound training, in Costa Rica evaluating ultrasound utilization in austere healthcare settings using geospatial analysis, in Kenya implementing a novel AI-enabled trauma education program for prehospital providers, and in Sri Lanka investigating road traffic accident injuries and how emergency care resources can be leveraged to optimize outcomes. Domestically he is involved in advanced transesophageal echocardiography research, and how electromagnetic hand motion analysis can augment procedural Point-of-Care Ultrasound training. He is currently pursuing an MBA degree from the University of Massachusetts. -
Brian T. Bateman

BioBrian T. Bateman, MD, MSc is the Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine.
Before coming to Stanford, Dr. Bateman served as the Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Chief of the Division of Obstetric Anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and as Co-Director of the Harvard Program on Perinatal and Pediatric Pharmacoepidemiology in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Bateman’s scholarship focuses on the study of medication safety in pregnancy and on predictors and management of maternal morbidity. To address questions in these areas, Dr. Bateman and collaborators at Harvard helped pioneer the use of advanced epidemiological techniques applied to large, routinely collected healthcare utilization data. This research has been funded by multiple R01 grants from the NIH and by grants from the FDA and has been published in leading clinical journals including NEJM, JAMA, BMJ, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Pediatrics, JAMA Psychiatry, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Bateman’s bibliography contains over 300 publications. This research is frequently cited in clinical reviews and guidelines and has prompted both the FDA and EMA to make labelling changes to medications regarding use in pregnancy. Dr. Bateman is also a founding member of the International Pregnancy Safety Study Consortium (InPress) which is a collaborative effort between investigators from the US and each of the five Nordic countries to pool data for studies evaluating the safety of medications.
Dr. Bateman currently serves as Chairperson of FDA’s Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee after having previously served a 4-year term (2015-2019) as a voting member of this Committee. He was a technical advisor for the recent revision of the Joint Commission’s pain management standards. He has served on expert panels and workshops sponsored by the National Academy of Medicine, the FDA, the NIH, the CDC, and the Department of Health and Human Services, and on multiple grant review committees for the NIH and other funders. He is an Editor for the journal, Anesthesiology, and the textbook, Chestnut’s Obstetric Anesthesia: Principles and Practice.
Dr. Bateman’s work has been recognized by a number of awards including his selection in 2017 by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology as the Gerard Ostheimer lecturer and in 2018 by the American Society of Anesthesiologists as the James E. Cottrell Presidential Scholar Awardee, which is given to one clinical-scientist each year within 10 years of initial faculty appointment for accomplishment in research.
Faculty development and mentorship has been a central focus of Dr. Bateman’s career. He has mentored numerous trainees who have gone on to outstanding academic careers. Throughout his career, he has worked particularly hard to advance the careers of women and underrepresented minorities and to create environments where everyone is welcomed and has an opportunity to advance.
Dr. Bateman is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate Yale College and received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and was awarded the Janeway Prize for the highest achievements and abilities in the graduating class. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and residency and chief residency in anesthesiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed a Masters in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. -
Glaivy Batsuli, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsHemophilia is a rare inherited X-linked bleeding disorder characterized by the deficiency of blood clotting proteins factor VIII or factor IX. These individuals are at risk for spontaneous bleeds and trauma or surgery-induced bleeding. There have been remarkable advancements in the management of hemophilia to prevent these bleeding episodes and improve quality of life. However, the presence of neutralizing antibodies, called inhibitors, still dictates access to novel therapies such as factor replacement for bleed management and now FDA-approved gene therapies. The Batsuli Lab is focused on elucidating mechanisms of the immune response to blood coagulation proteins in bleeding disorders in order to develop strategies and therapeutics for inhibitor prevention and tolerance induction.
Dr. Batsuli's clinical research interests also include clinical trial participation for novel therapeutics & interventions in bleeding disorders such as hemophilia and von Willebrand disease in addition to coagulation issues & outcomes in ultra-rare bleeding disorders and sickle cell disease. -

Tina Baykaner
Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine)
BioTina Baykaner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and Electrophysiology. Following internal medicine residency, cardiovascular medicine and advanced heart failure fellowship trainings at University of California, San Diego and electrophysiology fellowship at Stanford University, Dr. Baykaner joined Stanford University faculty in 2018. She has published over 200 papers, book chapters and abstracts including over 100 original peer-reviewed articles, and delivered over 100 invited presentations in national and international meetings. She serves as associate editor, section editor and editorial board member of four electrophysiology journals and served in guideline writing committees.
Dr. Baykaner’s current research interests include outcomes research, epidemiology and mechanisms of rhythm disorders. She is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health to study patient related outcomes regarding atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. She received prior research funding from American Heart Association and Heart Rhythm Society. Dr. Baykaner's clinical practice focuses on ablation of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, SVTs, inappropriate sinus tachycardia management, device implantation and device extraction.
Dr. Baykaner is an active member of American Heart Association (AHA), American College of Cardiology (ACC), Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) and European Society of Cardiology (ESC). She serves as an elected member of the Digital Health Committee for HRS, and previously served as an elected member of the HRS Communications Committee and ACC Task Force ICD research committee. -

Batuhan Bayram
Postdoctoral Scholar, Human Gene Therapy
BioDr. Bayram is a medical doctor from Turkey, who earned his medical degree from Istanbul University- Cerrahpasa School of Medicine. After finishing medical school, he worked as a General Practitioner in Turkey and gained clinical experience at UCLA, Cleveland Clinic, and Tufts Medical Center. Dr. Bayram has been involved in several projects at Mellins Lab, focusing primarily on studying Natural Killer (NK) cells in Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS). He conducted perforin assays as part of the PANS NK study, aiming to understand the differences between PANS patients and healthy controls. Dr. Bayram has a keen interest in Rheumatology and Immunology, with aspirations to specialize as a rheumatologist in the future.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsFunction of Hedgehog proteins and other extracellular signals in morphogenesis (pattern formation), in injury repair and regeneration (pattern maintenance). We study how the distribution of such signals is regulated in tissues, how cells perceive and respond to distinct concentrations of signals, and how such signaling pathways arose in evolution. We also study the normal roles of such signals in stem-cell physiology and their abnormal roles in the formation and expansion of cancer stem cells.

Resident in Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencesBioEllie Beam is a psychiatry resident pursuing research at the intersection of neuroscience, computer science, and language. She completed MD/PhD training at Stanford Medical School with funding from the MSTP and the NRSA fellowship. Her doctoral thesis synthesized the neuroimaging literature into a framework for knowledge of human brain function, published in Nature Neuroscience and forming the basis for a US patent. Her work has been recognized by the Leah J. Dickstein Medical Student Award and Angier B. Duke Memorial Scholarship.

Thomas Bearrood

BioThomas Bearrood received his B.A. from St. Olaf College, double majoring in chemistry and math. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His graduate research was completed in Jeff Chan's lab, where he developed activity-based fluorescent and photoacoustic probes for biologically interesting molecules. Thomas came to Stanford in 2021 as a postdoctoral scholar in James Chen's lab. His current research focuses on understanding the role of ALDH1B1 in gastrointestinal cancers.

Sherry Ann Beaudreau

Staff, Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencesBioDr. Beaudreau is a licensed clinical psychologist with board certification in geropsychology. As PI of the Mental Health, Neurocognition, and Treatment in Older Adults lab, she conducts late life clinical research and mentors trainees in the Sierra Pacific Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center at VA Palo Alto. Nationally, she directs the 28-site VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research and Treatment. She holds appointments as Clinical Professor (Affiliated) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine and as an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. In her capacity as a VA Subject Matter Expert in Problem Solving Training, she is actively involved in clinician trainings, consultation, and development of program materials for the national roll-out of Problem Solving Therapy for Suicide Prevention.
Her overarching research aims to leverage knowledge about the cognitive profiles of older adults with psychiatric disorders or at risk for suicide to inform the development and optimization of psychiatric behavioral interventions, including Problem Solving Therapy. She is the PI of a 5-year, multi-site randomized control trial to determine the efficacy of Problem Solving Therapy for reducing suicidal ideation over and above usual care. She is a Fellow of the Behavioral and Social Sciences section for Gerontological Society of America and the division of Adult Aging and Development for American Psychological Association. Additionally, she serves on several journal editorial boards including American Psychologist, Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice, and Clinical Gerontologist. In the department, she co-chairs the Stanford/VA Palo Alto interdepartmental Geriatric Psychiatry and Neuroscience Grand Rounds, an interdisciplinary forum featuring national and international experts in geriatrics (http://med.stanford.edu/psychiatry/education/gpngrandrounds.html) and is a member of the departmental Nominations and Awards committee. -

BioAs co-founder and co-director of La Clínica Latina, Dr. Nataly Beck is a psychiatrist who is passionate about providing culturally sensitive and compassionate care to patients, especially to those from the Latino community. Originally from Lima, Peru, she immigrated to the US with her family at a young age. She graduated from Yale School of Medicine and completed her psychiatry residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. After her first year as an attending at Yale, she began her work at Stanford where she worked in the INSPIRE Clinic for individuals experiencing psychosis and then co-founded La Clínica Latina. She loves the Bay Area and her interests include salsa dancing, playing piano, and spending time with her family.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMyocardial bridges (MB) with associated upfront atherosclerotic lesions are common findings on coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA). Abnormal septal wall motion in exercise echocardiography (EE) may to be associated with MB. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is considered the gold standard for the detection of MB. We investigate whether CTA is comparable to IVUS for the assessment of MB and upstream plaques in symptomatic patients with suspicion for MB raised by EE.

Laren Becker

BioI am a physician-scientist in the Division of Gastroenterology at Stanford University. My clinical and research interest has been in neurogastroenterology. Specifically, my research has been exploring the interplay between immune cells and the enteric nervous system, and evaluating how perturbations of this interaction as a result of aging disrupts gastrointestinal neuromuscular function. Ultimately, my hope is that insights from this research provide novel therapies for treating patients with motility disorders like constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.

Pauline Becker has been an active member of the Stanford community for 19 years. She has an undergraduate degree in Human Biology (1998) and a masters in Learning, Design and Technology (1999). In 1998, she received the Albert H. Hastorf Award for Outstanding Service for excellence in teaching, from the Program in Human Biology. She has worked in industry as a quality assurance engineer and online community manager (Macromedia, 1999-2002). Since then she was a program manager at SUMMIT (Stanford University Medical Media & Information Technologies), where in partnership with PATH (a nonprofit international health organization) she headed the technical and educational design side of the AIM e-Learning project, dedicated to delivering online content to national health policy makers.
In her work for AIM e-Learning, Becker traveled to India, Uganda, Thailand, WHO Geneva and CDC Atlanta, where between designing and implementing appropriate technologies to deliver educational content, she conducted training sessions, usability studies and user needs surveys. She was introduced to the major issues and players in international health, in discussions with global partners and in-country staff.
At Stanford, Becker worked with medical students to develop the new course Rethinking International Health. The course uses online interviews of important figures in international health as a springboard for discussion of the major issues. Becker also worked with PATH and the World Health Organization in the redesign of a WHO computer-based tool for measles strategic planning.
Becker's research interests include the use of simulations and "serious games" (games for learning) in medical and health education. Her work on AIM e-Learning and the use of Web-based patient simulators for assessment in medical education has been published in peer-reviewed conference proceedings. She is fluent in conversational French and enjoys entertaining. -
Harmeet Bedi

BioDr. Harmeet Bedi is the Director of Interventional Pulmonology & Bronchoscopy at Stanford University. His expertise is in minimally invasive techniques used in the diagnosis and treatment of various airway and lung diseases such as lung cancer, benign & malignant airway obstruction, and pleural diseases. He specializes in rigid & flexible bronchoscopy, robotic bronchoscopy, airway stent placement, balloon bronchoplasty, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), and various pleural procedures. He also specializes in a variety of tumor ablative therapies including laser therapy, electrocautery, argon plasma coagulation (APC), brachytherapy, and cryotherapy.
He founded the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) - guided bronchoscopy program at Stanford in 2019. CBCT-guided bronchoscopy is a novel and cutting-edge technique which combines bronchoscopy with CT imaging, allowing for improved localization and diagnosis of peripheral lung nodules. Additionally, CBCT-guided bronchoscopy will allow for numerous potential cancer therapies that are currently under development.
Dr. Bedi is a principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple clinical trials related to bronchoscopy, thoracic imaging, pulmonary nodules, and lung cancer. Specifically, he has multiple research interests within the realm of bronchoscopic device innovation and CBCT-guided bronchoscopy. -
Andrew Beel
Instructor, Structural Biology
BioAndrew Beel received an M.D. and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from Stanford, where he studied the structure and condensation of the eukaryotic chromosome under the supervision of Roger Kornberg. He started his independent research program in late 2022 after receiving an Early Independence Award from the Office of the Director of the National Institutes of Health. His group is broadly interested in mesoscale biological organization and the physical underpinnings thereof, with a current emphasis on the axial core of the metaphase chromosome. Corinne Beinat

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe focus of my research is to develop novel imaging and treatment strategies to detect and better manage cancer. This approach relies first on the identification and validation of molecular targets and biomarkers that are linked with underlying the underlying biology driving the initiation and progression of cancers. We then develop novel small molecule based radiotracers to monitor fundamental molecular and cellular processes occurring in living subjects using positron emission tomography (PET) with the goal of improving cancer diagnosis and management. We additionally develop novel peptide based theragnostic agents for stratification of patients with high receptor expression, treatment with targeted radionuclide therapy, and subsequent monitoring of treatment response. Our overall goal is to develop multiple clinically translatable strategies to improve cancer diagnosis, management, and outcomes.

Ruth Belay, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Urology
BioDr. Belay is a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist with the Stanford Health Care Urologic Cancer Program. She is also a clinical instructor in the Department of Urology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Belay specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the urinary tract, including kidney cancer, enlarged prostate, ureteral stones, and blood in the urine. She also treats all types of genitourinary cancers. She is skilled in the use of multiple imaging and treatment modalities, including cystoscopy, endourology, laparoscopy, laser therapy and surgery, ultrasound, urodynamic testing, ureteroscopy, and robotic surgery. Dr. Belay works closely with her patients to provide a comprehensive evaluation and care plan.
Her research interests include pain control during robot-assisted prostatectomy (prostate removal) and determining the best types of guidewires for bypassing stones in the ureter. She has also studied the effects of caffeine on postmenopausal women with overactive bladder symptoms
Dr. Belay is involved with the Stanford Medicine Center for Improvement, the goal of which is to inspire and accelerate the delivery of consistent, excellent care across Stanford Medicine. She is also passionate about sharing her knowledge of urology with medical students, having taught and mentored several residents and post-doctoral fellows.
Dr. Belay’s research has appeared in several peer-reviewed journals, including Urology Practice, Journal of Endourology, and Journal of Women’s Health. She has presented her work both nationally and internationally at meetings and conferences of professional organizations including the American Urological Association (AUA); Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction; and World Congress of Endourology.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur goal is to understand the mechanisms regulating the development of human systems. Drawing on both pluripotent stem cell biology, hematopoiesis, and immunology, combined with novel high-content single-cell analysis (CyTOF – Mass Cytometry) and imagining (MIBI-Multiplexed Ion Beam Imaging) we are creating templates of ‘normal’ human cellular behavior to both discover novel regulatory events and cell populations as well as understand dysfunctional processes such as cancer.

BioAs an attorney, psychotherapist, and founder of Psych-Appeal, the first private mental health insurance advocacy law firm in the United States, I investigate and challenge discriminatory barriers to mental health services by managed care organizations. Additionally, he has an interest and expertise in General Thoracic and Vascular surgery. Dr. Bender currently works with organizations within the medical community to develop software to aid in the teaching and practice of medicine.

BioDr. Nick Bene is a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon who serves as the Director of Gender Affirmation Surgery at Stanford Medicine.
He earned his medical degree from Tufts University and completed his residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Lahey Clinic in Boston, MA. Driven by a commitment to gender care, Dr. Bene pursued a dedicated fellowship in Advanced Gender Affirmation Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR.
Bringing comprehensive surgical expertise in facial, chest, body and genital affirmation procedures, Dr. Bene is dedicated to providing exceptional care for gender diverse people.
He prioritizes a collaborative approach during consultations, working closely with patients to develop personalized surgical plans through informed decision-making and empowerment.
Dr. Bene’s research interests include patient-centered outcomes, innovative surgical techniques, improving access to affirming care and reducing complications in gender affirmation surgery. He is also committed to advancing education within residency and fellowship programs.
A native of Hong Kong, Dr. Bene is fluent in Cantonese. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research focuses on improving cancer survivorship through better understanding of long-term health outcomes and through the development of theoretically driven, evidence-based behavioral interventions to improve adjustment, risk management, and quality of life. To this end, I lead studies aimed to guide and support patient decision-making and self-management after cancer. Much of my work focuses on the experiences of young adults affected by cancer.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research aims to improve population health by creating high quality evidence about what health interventions work in whom and where, when, and how to implement them. Most of our research is focused on environmentally-mediated infectious diseases, including malaria, diarrhea, soil-transmitted helminths, and influenza. Our focus is on improving the health of vulnerable populations from low-resource settings, both domestically and internationally. We use a variety of epidemiologic, computational, and statistical methods, including causal inference and machine learning methods.
