Matthew Fitzgerald, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research encompasses several translational projects. One focus is to modify the routine audiologic test battery such that it places equal weight on hearing acuity and hearing function. This work includes measures of speech in noise, or electrophysiologic responses such as the FFR. I also explore tools to better assess and maximize performance in users of hearing aids and cochlear implants. Finally, I am also investigating the benefits of telemedicine, and new treatments for tinnitus.

Peter Fitzgerald, MD, PhD

BioDr. Peter Fitzgerald is the Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Technology and Director of the Cardiovascular Core Analysis Laboratory (CCAL) at Stanford University Medical School. He is an Interventional Cardiologist and has a PhD in Engineering. He is Professor in both the Departments of Medicine and Engineering (by courtesy) at Stanford. Presently, Dr. Fitzgerald’s laboratory includes 17 postdoctoral fellows and graduate engineering students focusing on state-of-the-art technologies in Cardiovascular Medicine. He has led or participated in over 175 clinical trials, published over 550 manuscripts/chapters, and lectures worldwide. He has trained over 150 post-docs in Engineering and Medicine in the past decade. In addition, he heads the Stanford/Asia MedTech innovation program.
Dr. Fitzgerald has been principle/founder of twenty-one medical device companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has transitioned fourteen of these start-ups to large medical device companies. He serves on several boards of directors, advised dozens of medical device startups as well as multinational healthcare companies in the design and development of new diagnostic and therapeutic devices in the cardiovascular arena. In 2001, Peter was on the founding team of LVP Capital, a venture firm, focused on medical device and biotechnology start-ups in San Francisco. In 2009, he co-founded TriVentures, which is an incubator/venture fund for early stage medical technology in Israel. -
Caroline Fleck
Adjunct Clinical Instructor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Caroline Fleck received her doctorate in Psychology & Neuroscience from Duke University, and went on to specialize in cognitive behavioral therapies including Exposure and Response Prevention, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Parent Management Training, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and Behavioral Activation. She is the founder and clinical director of Luma - a network of evidence-based clinicians in private practice. Dr. Fleck is also a trainer, educator, and public speaker on the topics of evidence-based approaches in psychology, mindfulness, and the use of technology in mental health care. Her lectures and courses at Stanford focus on training residents, post-docs, and faculty in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and risk management.

Scott Fleming

BioScott Fleming is a Ph.D. Student in Stanford's Biomedical Informatics Training Program, Department of Biomedical Data Science. He completed his B.S. in Mathematical and Computational Science at Stanford University. During that time, he worked with Dr. Leanne Williams to build pipelines for analyzing heterogeneous, high-dimensional datasets in order to discover patterns of brain activity that contribute to anxiety and depression. His most recent work has focused on developing machine learning methods to make accurate and effective crowd-powered diagnoses for children with autism and other developmental disorders.

BioDr. Flood is a Professor at Stanford University who is fellowship trained in Pain Medicine and Obstetric Anesthesiology. She specializes in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain and multiple aspects of women's health including the prevention of chronic pain after childbirth. Research interests include the role of multimodal treatment in chronic pain conditions and prevention of persistent opioid use. BioJosefina (she/her/ella) is a Propel Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health in the School of Medicine with Dr. Mathew Kiang’s lab. Her research is about health and socioeconomic inequities across the life course. She is interested in diverging outcomes across race/ethnicity and documentation status. Josefina earned her B.A. in psychology with a public health minor from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She pursued her doctoral education in sociology at UCLA as well. Her doctoral studies were supported by the Health Policy Research Scholars program, a program by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

BioAubrey Florom-Smith, PhD, RN, AFAsMA, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health, at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She is a Nurse Scientist in the Office of Research, Patient Care Services at Stanford Health Care, where she supports Acuity Adaptable Unit nursing and interprofessional research, technology research, and nursing research at Stanford Health Care-TriValley. Dr. Florom-Smith has over 10 years of nursing, clinical, and applied research experience, across a wide range of areas of inquiry, and in healthcare, corporate, and laboratory settings. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her PhD in Nursing Science from the University of Miami, where she was the first National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Nursing Research Predoctoral Fellow at the School of Nursing and Health Studies. Dr. Florom-Smith’s research interests include exploration of novel healthcare delivery models as complex systems, understanding, sustaining and enhancing human health and performance during spaceflight, and adapting impactful countermeasures and interventions for use at the terrestrial bedside and in space. Inducted into Sigma Theta Tau in 2008, Dr. Florom-Smith has received several honors and awards, including the 2020 University of Miami Alumnus of Distinction Award, the Aerospace Nursing and Allied Health Professionals Society Louise Marshall Nursing Scholarship, the Jonas Foundation Nurse Leader Scholar, the Sigma Theta Rising Star of Scholarship and Research Award, and the March of Dimes Rising Star Award. Dr. Florom-Smith is an Associate Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association.

Lara Foland-Ross
Senior Research Scholar, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences
BioI am a neuroscientist in the Division of Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. I use a variety of imaging modalities -including EEG, fNIRS and fMRI- to examine the neurobiology of mood and cognition in adolescents. The primary aim of my work is to understand how neurodevelopment is altered in adolescents with clinical and metabolic disorders, and the neuropsychiatric consequences of these alterations. Current projects include the study of adolescents with disordered puberty, type 1 diabetes, and Fragile-X syndrome. Moreover, I'm examining the neural basis of imposter syndrome and stereotype threat in women. I deeply value the process of acting on curiosity, learning from challenges, and applying creative solutions to both highlight and address gaps in our understanding of the brain and cognition.

Shawna Follis

BioShawna Follis, PhD, MS, is an Instructor of Medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. Previously, she was a Stanford Propel Postdoctoral Scholar from 2021 to 2023 and a NIH T32 Postdoctoral Fellow from 2020 to 2021. Dr. Follis is a social epidemiologist researching race and ethnicity health disparities, aging, and cardiovascular disease prevention. She received her PhD in epidemiology at the University of Arizona and her master’s degree in anthropology from Purdue University. Dr. Follis promotes inclusion of underrepresented communities in scientific research through mentorship, teaching, and diversity committees.

Eric Foote

BioEric Foote is a pediatric hospitalist with experience conducting clinical and public health research around the world. His research focuses on identifying and intervening on health disparities in low income countries and in low resource settings. Currently, he is developing and evaluating a community health worker-led household phototherapy intervention to extend access to neonatal jaundice care for newborns in rural Bangladesh. He is also working to improve SARS-CoV-2 testing and genomic surveillance across California and worldwide.

BioJenna is a research scientist with the School of Medicine and affiliated with the King Center for Global Development, the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Doerr School of Sustainability. She completed her PhD with the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources and obtained her Master's in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Washington. Her research brings together principles of environmental science, epidemiology, and behavior change. She develops and evaluates interventions to minimize exposures to contaminants and disease vectors in low-income countries. Her most recent research has focused on lead exposure in South Asia.

Andrea Fox

BioAndrea is a certified Physician Assistant who joined Stanford Health Care in 2019 to develop a comprehensive Fracture Liaison Service and bone health clinic championed by Dr. Michael Gardner, Trauma Orthopaedist. Andrea earned a Masters degree in Medical Science, Physician Assistant Studies and a Masters in Health Administration, both from the University of Missouri. She holds a current certification with the International Society of Clinical Densitometry and has completed her certificate trained as a fracture liaison clinician through the National Osteoporosis Foundation. She has a keen interest in educating primary care providers and the general public on the importance of early monitoring, risk factors and treatment for bone loss and the prevention and healing of fractures.

BioBrandy M. Fox, Ph.D., is a Research Fellow at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics with support from a National Human Genome Research Institute’s Ethical Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) Program training grant. She received her Ph.D. in Health Care Ethics with a concentration in Empirical Research from The Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics at Saint Louis University under the supervision of Harold Braswell. She also holds a BA in Politics from The Catholic University of America and an MS in Health Care Ethics from Creighton University. Brandy served as an officer in the US Army and has worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs and Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. Brandy is interested in the impact of genetic research on mental health diagnoses and treatment, including how mental illness is defined and conceptualized.

BioDr. Paige Fox is Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who specializes in hand surgery, reconstructive microsurgery including facial reanimation, as well as peripheral nerve and brachial plexus surgery. She is an Associate Professor in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery in the Department of Surgery. She works with adult and pediatric patients. Her lab focuses on wound healing and nerve compression. She has clinical research interested in optimizing care of upper extremity and nerve disorders both in the US and internationally. Dr. Fox has a passion for sustainability and health care's effect on the environment. She is involved in efforts to green the OR and the clinics at Stanford.

Benjamin Lewis Franc

BioDr. Franc is a Clinical Professor of Radiology - Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. He completed his B.S and M.S. in Chemical Engineering at Stanford University, Stanford, CA. He completed his medical school training at University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine. While conducting his residency at Stanford University, in the Division of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, he was also the chief resident. Dr. Franc’s research interests include all aspects of PET-CT as he has nearly 20 years of experience in clinical Nuclear Medicine with particular expertise in PET-CT.
Dr. Franc predominantly publishes and lectures on applications and innovations of PET-CT. He has proficiency in all aspects of PET radiopharmaceutical development, spanning the design of molecules, synthesis of radioligands, and use in animal and human imaging. He also has expertise in quantitative image analysis, development of novel post-processing image reconstruction methods, and the application of artificial intelligence in human diagnostics. Dr. Franc has implemented new radiopharmaceuticals in pre-clinical and clinical research PET imaging as well as for clinical PET with applications in cancer, infectious disease (HIV), and autoimmune disease (RA). He has applied advanced computational techniques, including deep learning, to extract predictive data for prognosis of various cancers and neurodegenerative diseases from molecular imaging modalities.
Since joining the faculty at Stanford in 2018, Dr. Franc has received several awards including the Radiological Society of North America 2019 Margulis Award for Excellence in Research; RSNA 2019 Trainee Research; and Most read article in Radiology 2019. He has accepted the position of Director, Residency Program, Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging as well as the Director, Radiology Value-Based Care Initiative. Dr. Franc has presented more than 40 abstracts at national and international meetings and published more than 90 papers in peer-reviewed publications, as well as 9 book chapters. -

BioFrancesca Alejandro, NP was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and has resided here for most of her life. She attended San Jose State University, where she obtained her Bachelors in Public Health and minor in Child Development. Seeking to further her education, she attended Western University of Health Sciences and obtained her Masters in Ambulatory Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner degrees.
Francesca Alejandro, NP started working at Stanford in 2008, at the time as an Operating Room assistant, and was fortunate to come back once she completed her training as a Nurse Practitioner. Francesca enjoys collegiality of the Academic setting and has a passion for Medicine, specifically Orthopedics. She enjoys spending time with her patients and educating them on how to manage their conditions and improve their health. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, medical missions, cooking, spending time with family, and watching football. -
