Daniel Owen Fishman
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Medical Psychiatry
BioAfter graduating from Vanderbilt Medical School, Dr. Fishman completed the Psychiatry Residency Program at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident and was lauded with the program’s sole Teaching Award. Thereafter, Dr. Fishman completed the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship also at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. During his training, he also served as Chief Fellow was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha, Honors Medical Society. In the subsequent years, Dr. Fishman practiced as a consultation and liaison psychiatrist, simultaneously serving both academic and community hospitals in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. In his outpatient clinic, he managed and treated patients with complex issues linking the domains of neurology and psychiatry, and specialized in nonepileptic episodes.
Dr. Fishman joined the faculty of Stanford University School of Medicine in 2020 as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Since his appointment, Dr. Fishman has led medical psychiatry services on the medical/surgical units, intensive care units and in the emergency department at Stanford Hospital to provide psychiatric care for patients with acute diagnoses and provide graduate medical education to psychiatry, internal medicine, palliative care, oncology, and neurology trainees. His work on developing a framework for evidence-based best practice guidelines was recognized with a 2020 DLIN/Fischer finalist award.
Dr. Fishman is the appointed Chief of the Inpatient Proactive Psycho-Oncology Service, a service designed to proactively identify patients with psychopathology or who will require psychiatric intervention during their hospitalization. The service helps prevent development and escalation of psychopathology in the inpatient blood and marrow transplant and other cancer populations. His outpatient work is primarily as a psychiatric oncologist at the Stanford Cancer Center where he provides psychiatric consultation services and collaborates closely with his oncology colleagues to deliver comprehensive cancer care.
His clinical and scholarly interests include the interface of medicine and psychiatry, psycho-oncology, catatonia, neuropsychiatry, collaborative care models, psychotherapy for the medically ill, interdisciplinary and graduate medical education. -
Matthew Fitzgerald, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research encompasses several translational projects. One focus is to modify the routine audiologic test battery such that it places equal weight on hearing acuity and hearing function. This work includes measures of speech in noise, or electrophysiologic responses such as the FFR. I also explore tools to better assess and maximize performance in users of hearing aids and cochlear implants. Finally, I am also investigating the benefits of telemedicine, and new treatments for tinnitus.

Peter Fitzgerald, MD, PhD

BioDr. Peter Fitzgerald is the Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Technology and Director of the Cardiovascular Core Analysis Laboratory (CCAL) at Stanford University Medical School. He is an Interventional Cardiologist and has a PhD in Engineering. He is Professor in both the Departments of Medicine and Engineering (by courtesy) at Stanford. Presently, Dr. Fitzgerald’s laboratory includes 17 postdoctoral fellows and graduate engineering students focusing on state-of-the-art technologies in Cardiovascular Medicine. He has led or participated in over 175 clinical trials, published over 550 manuscripts/chapters, and lectures worldwide. He has trained over 150 post-docs in Engineering and Medicine in the past decade. In addition, he heads the Stanford/Asia MedTech innovation program.
Dr. Fitzgerald has been principle/founder of twenty-one medical device companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has transitioned fourteen of these start-ups to large medical device companies. He serves on several boards of directors, advised dozens of medical device startups as well as multinational healthcare companies in the design and development of new diagnostic and therapeutic devices in the cardiovascular arena. In 2001, Peter was on the founding team of LVP Capital, a venture firm, focused on medical device and biotechnology start-ups in San Francisco. In 2009, he co-founded TriVentures, which is an incubator/venture fund for early stage medical technology in Israel. -
Caroline Fleck

BioDr. Caroline Fleck received her doctorate in Psychology & Neuroscience from Duke University, and went on to specialize in cognitive behavioral therapies including Exposure and Response Prevention, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Parent Management Training, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and Behavioral Activation. She is the founder and clinical director of Luma - a network of evidence-based clinicians in private practice. Dr. Fleck is also a trainer, educator, and public speaker on the topics of evidence-based approaches in psychology, mindfulness, and the use of technology in mental health care. Her lectures and courses at Stanford focus on training residents, post-docs, and faculty in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and risk management.

Annesa Flentje
Professor (Research) of Medicine (Stanford Prevention Research Center)
BioAnnesa Flentje, PhD, is a Professor at Stanford University in the Stanford Prevention Research Center, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine. Dr. Flentje is a clinical psychologist who uses multiple methods to understand the impacts of stress and coping on human health and disease. Her research has investigated how stress directly impacts health outcomes and how these processes are mediated through both behaviors (e.g., substance use and coping) and molecular mechanisms (e.g., epigenetics and transcriptional regulation). Dr. Flentje has developed cognitive behavioral interventions to reduce stress, and identified these as a mechanism to alter immune pathways in gene expression. Dr. Flentje is currently leading a large comparative effectiveness study of two interventions for posttraumatic stress symptoms among LGBTQIA+ populations in California. Dr. Flentje has developed and led nationwide mentoring initiatives to support health research of understudied populations and translational research to improve health. Dr. Flentje is Co-Director of The PRIDE Study (pridestudy.org), a national longitudinal cohort study of LGBTQIA+ individuals within the United States that has enrolled over 30,000 participants and is approaching 10 years of data collection.

Pamela Flood

BioDr. Flood is a Professor at Stanford University who is fellowship trained in Pain Medicine and Obstetric Anesthesiology. She specializes in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain and multiple aspects of women's health including the prevention of chronic pain after childbirth. Research interests include the role of multimodal treatment in chronic pain conditions and prevention of persistent opioid use. BioI am an Academic Research Scientist in Neuroscience and Precision Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. I use a variety of imaging modalities to examine the neural and behavioral mechanisms of mood and cognition. The primary aim of my work is to understand how individual brain patterns can be leveraged in treatment planning for depression. My primary projects include the ACE-D study ("Accelerating Cognition-guided signatures to Enhance translation in Depression") in the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness. I deeply value the process of acting on curiosity, learning from challenges, and applying creative solutions to both highlight and address gaps in our understanding of depression and other mental health conditions.

Jelle Folkerts
Postdoctoral Scholar, Pathology
BioDr. Folkerts received his master's degree in Drug Innovation from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, during which he spent a year at the Galli lab at Stanford on a Fulbright Scholarship. During this time, Dr. Folkerts played a key role in developing a technology platform employing functional genomics and high-resolution single-cell confocal imaging, enabling the rapid identification of degranulation regulators in primary human mast cells. Following his time at Stanford, Dr. Folkerts studied the regulatory mechanisms of human mast cell activation under the guidance of Rudi Hendriks and Marcus Maurer, earning his Ph.D. in 2022. He then returned to Stanford as a postdoctoral fellow in the Galli lab, where his current research focuses on the identification of human mast cell degranulation regulators using a whole-genome CRISPR knockout library screen, and the validation of these findings using the recently developed technology platform. It is his long-standing goal to contribute to the design and development of specific and effective therapeutic interventions for mast cell-mediated diseases.

BioShawna Follis, PhD, MS, is an Instructor and K99 Fellow in Epidemiology, researching the risk factors of cardiometabolic diseases. She completed her postdoctoral training at Stanford, as a Propel Postdoctoral Scholar from 2021 to 2023 and a NIH T32 Postdoctoral Fellow from 2020 to 2021. She received her PhD in epidemiology at the University of Arizona and her master’s degree in anthropology from Purdue University.

Eric Foote

BioEric Foote is a pediatric hospitalist with experience conducting clinical and public health research around the world. His research focuses on identifying and intervening on health disparities in low income countries and in low resource settings. Currently, he is developing and evaluating a community health worker-led household phototherapy intervention to extend access to neonatal jaundice care for newborns in rural Bangladesh. He is also working to improve SARS-CoV-2 testing and genomic surveillance across California and worldwide.

Daiana Fornes

BioDaiana Fornes is a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, supported by a Maternal & Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) Postdoctoral Fellowship. Her research centers on reproductive biology and pregnancy disorders, with a particular focus on uterine contractility, preterm labor, and uterine atony. She investigates calcium signaling pathways, including the role of TRPV4 ion channels, to identify novel therapeutic strategies aimed at improving maternal health outcomes.
Daiana earned her PhD from the University of Buenos Aires, where she studied metabolic alterations during pregnancy and their effects on fetal development. Her training has provided her with a strong foundation in translational research, with extensive experience in experimental design, molecular biology, and the analysis of signaling pathways. -

BioAndrea is a certified Physician Assistant who joined Stanford Health Care in 2019 to develop a comprehensive Fracture Liaison Service and bone health clinic championed by Dr. Michael Gardner, Trauma Orthopaedist. Andrea earned a Masters degree in Medical Science, Physician Assistant Studies and a Masters in Health Administration, both from the University of Missouri. She holds a current certification with the International Society of Clinical Densitometry and has completed her certificate trained as a fracture liaison clinician through the National Osteoporosis Foundation. She has a keen interest in educating primary care providers and the general public on the importance of early monitoring, risk factors and treatment for bone loss and the prevention and healing of fractures.

BioDr. Paige Fox is Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who specializes in hand surgery, reconstructive microsurgery including facial reanimation, as well as peripheral nerve and brachial plexus surgery. She is an Associate Professor in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery in the Department of Surgery. She works with adult and pediatric patients. Her lab focuses on wound healing and nerve compression. She has clinical research interested in optimizing care of upper extremity and nerve disorders both in the US and internationally. Dr. Fox has a passion for sustainability and health care's effect on the environment. She is involved in efforts to green the OR and the clinics at Stanford.

Benjamin Lewis Franc

BioDr. Franc is a Clinical Professor of Radiology - Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. He completed his B.S and M.S. in Chemical Engineering at Stanford University, Stanford, CA. He completed his medical school training at University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine. While conducting his residency at Stanford University, in the Division of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, he was also the chief resident. Dr. Franc’s research interests include all aspects of PET-CT as he has nearly 20 years of experience in clinical Nuclear Medicine with particular expertise in PET-CT.
Dr. Franc predominantly publishes and lectures on applications and innovations of PET-CT. He has proficiency in all aspects of PET radiopharmaceutical development, spanning the design of molecules, synthesis of radioligands, and use in animal and human imaging. He also has expertise in quantitative image analysis, development of novel post-processing image reconstruction methods, and the application of artificial intelligence in human diagnostics. Dr. Franc has implemented new radiopharmaceuticals in pre-clinical and clinical research PET imaging as well as for clinical PET with applications in cancer, infectious disease (HIV), and autoimmune disease (RA). He has applied advanced computational techniques, including deep learning, to extract predictive data for prognosis of various cancers and neurodegenerative diseases from molecular imaging modalities.
Since joining the faculty at Stanford in 2018, Dr. Franc has received several awards including the Radiological Society of North America 2019 Margulis Award for Excellence in Research; RSNA 2019 Trainee Research; and Most read article in Radiology 2019. He has accepted the position of Director, Residency Program, Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging as well as the Director, Radiology Value-Based Care Initiative. Dr. Franc has presented more than 40 abstracts at national and international meetings and published more than 90 papers in peer-reviewed publications, as well as 9 book chapters. -

BioFrancesca Alejandro, NP was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and has resided here for most of her life. She attended San Jose State University, where she obtained her Bachelors in Public Health and minor in Child Development. Seeking to further her education, she attended Western University of Health Sciences and obtained her Masters in Ambulatory Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner degrees.
Francesca Alejandro, NP started working at Stanford in 2008, at the time as an Operating Room assistant, and was fortunate to come back once she completed her training as a Nurse Practitioner. Francesca enjoys collegiality of the Academic setting and has a passion for Medicine, specifically Orthopedics. She enjoys spending time with her patients and educating them on how to manage their conditions and improve their health. BioDr. Francis is a Postdoctoral Scholar in Dr. Everett Moding’s lab at the Department of Radiation Oncology. She uses genomic analysis of patient samples and preclinical models to identify new targets that sensitize sarcoma to treatments like radiation and immunotherapy. Before joining Stanford University, she completed her PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the American University of Beirut, where she worked in Dr. Youssef Zeidan’s lab investigating the role of the sphingolipid-modifying enzyme SMPDL3b in radiation nephropathy. Her research interests revolve around improving cancer treatment outcomes and patients’ quality of life by optimizing radiation therapy, combined treatment strategies, personalized precision oncology, and mitigating collateral treatment-associated toxicities.

Curtis Frank

BioThe properties of ultrathin polymer films are often different from their bulk counterparts. We use spin casting, Langmuir-Blodgett deposition, and surface grafting to fabricate ultrathin films in the range of 100 to 1000 Angstroms thick. Macromolecular amphiphiles are examined at the air-water interface by surface pressure, Brewster angle microscopy, and interfacial shear measurements and on solid substrates by atomic force microscopy, FTIR, and ellipsometry. A vapor-deposition-polymerization process has been developed for covalent grafting of poly(amino acids) from solid substrates. FTIR measurements permit study of secondary structures (right and left-handed alpha helices, parallel and anti-parallel beta sheets) as a function of temperature and environment.
A broadly interdisciplinary collaboration has been established with the Department of Ophthalmology in the Stanford School of Medicine. We have designed and synthesized a fully interpenetrating network of two different hydrogel materials that have properties consistent with application as a substitute for the human cornea: high water swellability up to 85%,tensile strength comparable to the cornea, high glucose permeability comparable to the cornea, and sufficient tear strength to permit suturing. We have developed a technique for surface modification with adhesion peptides that allows binding of collagen and subsequent growth of epithelial cells. Broad questions on the relationships among molecular structure, processing protocol, and biomedical device application are being pursued. -
