Matthew Porteus

BioDr. Porteus was raised in California and was a local graduate of Gunn High School before completing A.B. degree in “History and Science” at Harvard University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and wrote an thesis entitled “Safe or Dangerous Chimeras: The recombinant DNA controversy as a conflict between differing socially constructed interpretations of recombinant DNA technology.” He then returned to the area and completed his combined MD, PhD at Stanford Medical School with his PhD focused on understanding the molecular basis of mammalian forebrain development with his PhD thesis entitled “Isolation and Characterization of TES-1/DLX-2: A Novel Homeobox Gene Expressed During Mammalian Forebrain Development.” After completion of his dual degree program, he was an intern and resident in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital and then completed his Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship in the combined Boston Chidlren’s Hospital/Dana Farber Cancer Institute program. For his fellowship and post-doctoral research he worked with Dr. David Baltimore at MIT and CalTech where he began his studies in developing homologous recombination as a strategy to correct disease causing mutations in stem cells as definitive and curative therapy for children with genetic diseases of the blood, particularly sickle cell disease. Following his training with Dr. Baltimore, he took an independent faculty position at UT Southwestern in the Departments of Pediatrics and Biochemistry before again returning to Stanford in 2010 as an Associate Professor. During this time his work has been the first to demonstrate that gene correction could be achieved in human cells at frequencies that were high enough to potentially cure patients and is considered one of the pioneers and founders of the field of genome editing—a field that now encompasses thousands of labs and several new companies throughout the world. His research program continues to focus on developing genome editing by homologous recombination as curative therapy for children with genetic diseases but also has interests in the clonal dynamics of heterogeneous populations and the use of genome editing to better understand diseases that affect children including infant leukemias and genetic diseases that affect the muscle. Clinically, Dr. Porteus attends at the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital where he takes care of pediatric patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

BioDr. Lisa Post, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of anxiety, depression and adjustment disorders in adults. She has been a practicing clinician at Stanford Hospital and Clinics since 1993. Since 2000, she has been Director of a clinical program for Stanford Varsity Athletes and for nine years has been the Team Clinician for the San Francisco 49ers. Her primary interest are in the treatment of high performing individuals and in stress management.

Anna Postolova, MD, MPH

BioDr. Postolova is board certified in internal medicine, allergy/immunology, and rheumatology. She cares for patients of all ages with compromised immune systems or allergic conditions including eczema, hives, angioedema, food and drug allergy, allergic rhinitis, asthma, and chronic rhinosinusitis.
She has authored papers and spoken on care for patients with an overlap of autoimmunity and immunodeficiency and conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, myositis, vasculitis, granulomatous mastitis, and osteoarthritis.
As a native Russian speaker, Dr. Postolova is sensitive to the cultural differences of patients and their families. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research addresses one of the most devastating and poorly treated symptoms that can develop in people with Parkinson's disease - Dementia. We use biological markers, multi-modal neuroimaging and genetics to understand the different underlying causes of dementia and to understand why dementia develops more quickly in some patients, but not others.

Peter Poullos

Clinical Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & HepatologyBioDr. Poullos is a native of Stockton California. He earned his B.S. at Santa Clara University and M.D. degree at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, after which he did an Internal Medicine residency at the University of California-San Francisco, finishing in 2002. He stayed at UCSF as a Gastroenterology fellow until 2004. However, after a spinal cord injury, he decided to retrain in Radiology. He did his Radiology residency at Stanford University, where he also completed a fellowship In Body Imaging in 2009. Dr. Poullos is now faculty in both the departments of Radiology and Gastroenterology and Hepatology. His clinical practice is at the Stanford Medicine, where he specializes in CT, MRI, and ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis. His interests include radiology of the acute abdomen, hepatobiliary imaging, and colorectal cancer screening.
Dr. Poullos is the Founder and Co-Chair of the Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE), a group composed of people with disabilities and their allies at Stanford Medicine. In that role, Dr. Poullos advocates for students and healthcare providers with disabilities and for health equity for disabled patients. He is a Faculty Advisor to the Stanford Medical Students with Disability and Chronic Illness (MSDCI) and the MSDCI National organizations. Dr. Poullos and SMADIE have made significant contributions to the disability community, including starting the Stanford Conference on Disability in Healthcare and Medicine, drawing over 1000 participants from 39 countries. He is the Co-Host of the popular “DocsWithDisabilities” podcast, has spoken internationally about disability access in medicine, and has written and researched in the field. One of his proudest achievements is co-creating the Disability in Medicine Mutual Mentorship Program, serving the needs of disabled medicine and healthcare students and practitioners. In 2022, Dr. Poullos received the Stanford President’s Award for Excellence through Diversity. -

BioJohnny Powell, from Greensboro, North Carolina, is pursuing an MD at Stanford School of Medicine as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar. He graduated cum laude from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a minor in psychology. Johnny aspires to lead medical practice in underserved communities and drive structural change to make health care more accessible at scale. While at Harvard, he led youth mentorship programming in Boston and Japan, conducted research in the natural and social sciences, and shadowed hospital physicians in Spain. As president of the Harvard Black Men’s Forum, Johnny implemented lasting infrastructure to promote public service and inclusion. After graduating, he worked as an associate consultant at Bain & Company on health care and social impact projects. Passionate about health equity, Johnny also served as research coordinator for the All of Us Research Program, a national National Institutes of Health initiative to increase diversity in health care research, at the University of Chicago.

BioMy research sits at the intersection of deep learning, computational analysis, and understanding high-dimensional biological data to create a positive impact for patients. I am deeply fascinated by computer science and have experience working with generative networks and deep neural networks.
Currently, I am working with Seraphina Shi in the Esfahani Lab. My research focuses on analyzing epigenetic features of cfDNA fragments to develop deep learning architectures for early lung cancer detection. My prior independent research involved using variational auto-encoders and optical coherence tomography data to detect Alzheimer's disease at an early stage.

Kris B. Prado, MD

BioDr. Kris Prado is a urologic oncology fellowship trained surgeon-scientist, board-certified urologist, and Assistant Professor in the Stanford University Department of Urology. His clinical practice focuses on urologic oncology, and he performs open, endoscopic, and robotic surgery. In addition to his clinical role, he is also an active member of Philip Beachy's laboratory where his research focuses on bladder urothelial development and regeneration.

BioWe use interdisciplinary approaches including theory and experiments to understand how computation is embodied in biological matter. Examples include cognition in single cell protists and morphological computing in animals with no neurons and origins of complex behavior in multi-cellular systems. Broadly, we invent new tools for studying non-model organisms with significant focus on life in the ocean - addressing fundamental questions such as how do cells sense pressure or gravity? Finally, we are dedicated towards inventing and distributing “frugal science” tools to democratize access to science (previous inventions used worldwide: Foldscope, Abuzz), diagnostics of deadly diseases like malaria and convening global citizen science communities to tackle planetary scale environmental challenges such as mosquito surveillance or plankton surveillance by citizen sailors mapping the ocean in the age of Anthropocene.

Janey S.A. Pratt, MD
Clinical Professor, Surgery - Pediatric Surgery
BioDr. Janey S.A. Pratt, MD, FACS, FASMBS is a general surgeon who specializes in Laparoscopic and Robotic General and Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS). She began her career in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was a founding member of the MGH Weight Center. As surgical director she introduced minimally invasive MBS and adolescent MBS to MGH in 2001 and 2007 respectively. In 2011 Dr. Pratt took over as Director at the MGH Weight Center and continued to work on several national committees towards improving access and care for adolescents with severe obesity. Dr. Pratt continued to practice general surgery throughout her tenure at MGH seeing patients with breast cancer, hernias, and obesity. She performed advance minimally invasive surgery (MIS) as well as advanced endoscopy.
In 2016 Dr. Pratt moved to California where she began her work at Stanford University, splitting her time between the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital and the Palo Alto VA. She performs Minimally Invasive MBS as well as endoscopy. Dr. Pratt has trained in robotic surgery as well. As a Clinical Professor of Surgery, Dr. Pratt is involved in training Stanford medical students and residents both in the OR, in clinic, in simulation labs and in the classroom. Since 2023 Dr. Pratt is dedicated only to the Children's Hospital running the Adolescent Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program at LPCH. This is an MBSAQIP accredited program in a free-standing children's hospital dedicated to the multidisciplinary care of children with obesity. This program is one of the top 5 programs in the country. Dr. Pratt has been involved in creating and updated guidelines for Adolescent MBS since 2005. In 2018 she was first author on the ASMBS Pediatric Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Guidelines. Her research interests include MIS MBS, pediatric obesity treatment and the use of medications to improve outcomes of MBS. Dr. Pratt frequently lectures on the subject of Adolescent Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. -

Carl Preiksaitis
Clinical Assistant Professor, Emergency Medicine
BioDr. Carl Preiksaitis is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He earned his MD from NYU Grossman School of Medicine, completed his Emergency Medicine residency at Stanford University, and subsequently completed a two-year Medical Education Scholarship Fellowship at Stanford. Dr. Preiksaitis also holds a Master of Education in Medical Education from the University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Preiksaitis's research interests lie at the intersection of artificial intelligence, medical education, and emergency medicine. As Principal Investigator of the Human Experience and Advancement Lab (HEAL), he focuses on leveraging AI and data science to enhance teaching, learning, and clinical practice. His projects include AI-powered analysis of clinical experiences for personalized resident education and the development of AI-assisted tools for evaluating learning resources.
Additionally, Dr. Preiksaitis is passionate about reproductive healthcare in emergency medicine. He has developed curricula for pregnancy disclosure and options counseling in the emergency department and conducts research on the prevalence and characteristics of emergency department visits by pregnant individuals. -

BioTyler Prestwood, M.D., Ph.D. specializes in the treatment of people with psychotic disorders and psychiatric complications with immunologic abnormalities. He is an attending in the INSPIRE Clinic at Stanford, which provides interdisciplinary care for people experiencing psychosis. He also provides care for patients experiencing psychiatric symptoms associated with long-COVID/Post-Acute Coronavirus Syndrome (PACS).
Dr. Prestwood has extensive research experience related to the immune system in various contexts including infectious disease, cancer, and psychiatry. His current work is focused on understanding the influence of infections, the immune response to infections, and metabolism on the subsequent development of psychiatric illnesses, including schizophrenia and PACS. -

Rosita Primavera
Basic Life Research Scientist, Rad/Pediatric Radiology
BioDr. Rosita Primavera is a Basic Life Research Scientist at Stanford University in the Department of Radiology/Pediatric Radiology. With an MD in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology and a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnologies, she brings a robust educational background to her research endeavors. Dr. Primavera has extensive experience in developing nano- and micro-drug delivery systems (DDS) as well as 3D platforms aimed at treating various diseases.
Her training includes a variety of techniques for creating drug delivery systems and 3D platforms, utilizing both synthetic and natural materials, and employing methods such as top-down and bottom-up fabrication. Over the past few years, Dr. Primavera's research interests have increasingly focused on diabetes. She has received extensive training in handling and processing pancreatic islets from multiple sources, including mice, rats, and humans, equipping her with the expertise needed to conduct both in vitro and in vivo experiments involving diabetic animal models. Dr. Primavera is focused on developing an on-command system that mimics pancreatic islet function. Her current research further investigates the role of 3D bioscaffolds in pancreatic islet transplantation, along with the involvement of mesenchymal stem cells in diabetes treatment. She is particularly interested in innovative cellular approaches, such as co-transplantation of islets alone, within cutting-edge bioscaffolds, or in conjunction with stem cells. Through her work, Dr. Primavera aims to enhance therapeutic strategies for diabetes and improve patient outcomes. -
Prince Allawadhi

BioMy research focuses on immune-stromal crosstalk in pancreatic diseases, with an emphasis on how myofibroblasts and macrophages drive inflammation, fibrosis, and multi-organ dysfunction. By integrating patient-derived organoids, zebrafish models, and multi-omics, I aim to unravel the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying pancreatic injury and repair. I am developing cutting-edge zebrafish models of exocrine pancreas disorders to uncover novel immuno-fibrotic pathways and accelerate the identification of translational targets for early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention.

Lance Prince
Philip Sunshine, MD, Professor of Neonatology
BioLawrence (Lance) S. Prince, MD, PhD, is the Division Chief for Neonatal and Developmental Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. Prince was previously a Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Neonatology at the University of California, San Diego and Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego.
Dr. Prince has a long and distinguished career mentoring clinical and scientific trainees and students, many of whom have gone on to establish their own successful careers as academic physician investigators. As a physician scientist, Dr. Prince leads a basic science laboratory focusing on the mechanisms regulating developmental immunology and lung injury and repair. Dr. Prince received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from University of Miami, an MD/PhD with a focus in Cell Biology from University of Alabama at Birmingham, and postdoctoral fellowship, Pediatrics residency, and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship training at the University of Iowa. Before arriving in California, Dr. Prince was an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Prince’s research interests include the molecular and cellular mechanisms controlling lung development and the maturation of the fetal and neonatal immune systems. He has a particular clinical interest in managing and treating neonatal lung diseases, especially bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in babies born extremely preterm. Dr. Prince’s research team focuses primarily on the development of innate immunity during fetal life as it impacts health and disease in preterm infants. The laboratory is investigating how microbes including Group B streptococcus exploit the unique features of neonatal macrophages to avoid immune detection and cause disease, as well as leading a number of clinical and translational investigations. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMuch of our research exploits the power of yeast as an experimentally tractable model eukaryote to investigate fundamental problems in cell and developmental biology such as the mechanisms of cell polarization and cytokinesis. In another project, we are developing the small sea anemone Aiptasia as a model system for study of the molecular and cellular biology of dinoflagellate-cnidarian symbiosis, which is critical for the survival of most corals but still very poorly understood.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are interested in a broad range of problems at the interface of genomics and evolutionary biology. One current focus of the lab is in understanding how genetic variation impacts gene regulation and complex traits. BioI obtained my PhD from the Biological and Environmental Science Division at King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST, Saudi Arabia) in 2021. I had the opportunity to work with Christian Frøkjær-Jensen on a fascinating research project focusing on the epigenetic regulation of germline genes and the transgenerational inheritance of silencing in C. elegans.
My passion lies in the field of epigenetics, synthetic and molecular biology, and protein biochemistry. I am deeply intrigued by the intricacies of genome organization and am dedicated to unraveling the "rules" that govern it. Additionally, I'm committed to dissecting the molecular and structural changes that take place within chromatin. -
