    BioI am an Italianist, an early modernist and a Michelangelo scholar. My primary research and teaching contributions center on Italian literature and cultural history of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with a special focus on lyric poetry and on the relationship between literature and spirituality.

    My first monograph, Michelangelo’s Christian Mysticism: Spirituality, Poetry and Art in Sixteenth-Century Italy (Cambridge University Press, 2014), was awarded the Jeanne and Aldo Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies by the Modern Language Association in 2013. Literary, cultural and historical in scope, this study considers the Florentine artist’s poetics and aesthetics in light of medieval and Renaissance Augustinianism, lay religious culture, and the Italian Reformation, respectively, to provide a more nuanced understanding of Michelangelo’s spirituality and how it functioned.

    My current book project, Poetics of Piety in Early Modern Italy, builds on this earlier work to consider the ways in which male and female poets of devotional verse engaged the Word in text, image, and imagination in the sixteenth century. Combining diachronic and synchronic approaches to the study of early modern Italian verse, this project examines relations among religious practice and poetic form in the pre-Tridentine and post-Tridentine periods.

    Other book-length projects include Friendship and Sociability in Premodern Europe: Contexts, Concepts and Expressions (Toronto: CRRS, 2014), a co-edited volume that explores ideas and instances of friendship in premodern Europe through a well-ordered series of investigations into amity in discrete social and cultural contexts related to some of the most salient moments and expressions of European history and civilization: the courtly love tradition, Renaissance humanism; the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation and the attendant confessionalization and wars of religion; Jesuit missions; the colonization of America; and lastly, expanding trade patterns in the Age of Discovery.

    Prior to joining Stanford, I was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of History at Harvard University and at the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies at Victoria University in the University of Toronto, where I designed and taught early modern cultural history courses and lectured on Italian language and literature.

    In parallel to my scholarly pursuits, I am completing a work of historical fiction inspired by my academic research. Taking the dramatic events of the French invasion of Italy in the fall of 1494 as its context, Imminence: Florence, 1494 recounts the riveting and tumultuous history of the dangerously divided Florentine city-state through the experiences of a lay female visionary temporarily resident in an elite nunnery tied to the highest echelons of political power. An imagined female story seamlessly inserted into a famously documented male history, Imminence weaves strands of verisimilitude with threads of reality, to offer a tapestry of fiction and non-fiction that touches on persistent human challenges – personal, social, and political. An exercise in empathic historical imagination, this novel explores women’s political, social, cultural, and religious history during the exciting and pivotal moment of the Italian Renaissance.

    BioShannon Pufahl is a Jones Lecturer in the Creative Writing Program. She teaches fiction, creative nonfiction, and writing across genres. She was a Stegner Fellow in fiction at Stanford, where she received a Centennial award, the University's highest honor for teaching assistants. She has published essays in The Threepenny Review, The Paris Review, The New York Review of Books, and elsewhere, on topics ranging from John Brown and the Antebellum Midwest, to personal memoir. Her novel, On Swift Horses, about gambling, sex, and the post-war American West, was published in 2019 by Riverhead Books.

    Shannon also holds a PhD in American Literature and Culture from the University of California, Davis. Her dissertation traces the animal welfare movement in the U.S. from its origins in the 19th-century, through the intense debates about animal life, suffering, and intelligence at century's end, and into the young adult animal novels of the early 20th-century.

    She is the co-coordinator of The Writer's Studio, a weekly workshop series sponsored by the Creative Writing Program, the Stanford Storytelling Project, and the Hume Center for Writing and Speaking. She also teaches in the Stanford Arts Intensive and online in Summer Session.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsViral infections and subsequent host response depend on multiple RNA-protein interaction. My research focuses on the structural and functional characterization of RNA-protein complexes involved in viral infection. Current research aims to understand how the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) initiates its replication upon host infection. We use NMR spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography to study the structure of the initiation complex, formed by a host tRNA and HIV genomic RNA, coupled with biochemical and biophysical methods to understand functional properties. The goal of this research is to gain a molecular view of HIV replication initiation, and use this information to develop new therapeutic approaches to combat HIV.

    BioKrishna Pundi, MD is a cardiac electrophysiologist and health services and outcomes researcher with a clinical interest in the management of ventricular arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation.

    Dr. Pundi leads a multidisciplinary research program to study (1) clinical and arrhythmia-specific factors that predict cardiovascular risk for ventricular arrhythmias, (2) the interplay of frailty and obesity with atrial fibrillation outcomes, and (3) the role of digital health and wearables in arrhythmia care. He has led grant-funded research through the NIH, FDA, and ACC and collaborations with large device and quality databases including AHA’s Get With the Guidelines. He has a special interest in innovation and regulatory science, having organized national Think Tanks of patients, investigators, and FDA to define the scientific and clinical use of wearable monitors. Dr. Pundi holds leadership roles through the American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm Society, Cardiovascular Sciences Research Consortium, and HRX - an innovation-focused meeting of clinicians, researcher, and industry.

    BioDr. Rajesh Punn is a pediatric cardiologist and clinical professor at Stanford University with expertise in advanced echocardiography, congenital heart disease imaging, and fetal cardiology. He serves as Director of Ambulatory Cardiology at the Stanford Pediatric Heart Center, where his work focuses on optimizing outpatient care delivery and integrating imaging into clinical decision-making.

    His academic interests center on ventricular function, fetal and pediatric echocardiography, and translational imaging applications in congenital heart disease. He is actively involved in multicenter research collaborations and has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Punn also serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography.

    In addition to his clinical and research work, he is deeply engaged in mentorship of fellows, residents, and medical students, with a focus on developing the next generation of clinicians and physician-scientists in pediatric cardiology.

    BioMy research integrates neuroimaging, biomedical signal processing, and the systems neuroscience of general anesthesia and sedation.

    We are a neuroengineering lab focused on brain dynamics, brain health, and the neural mechanisms of anesthesia. Our research aims to understand the brain dynamics of aging, Alzheimer’s disease, child development, sleep, anesthesia, and consciousness. We use this knowledge to develop novel technologies for brain monitoring and physiological control. We also teach anesthesiologists how to use EEG to provide personalized anesthesia care.

She received her B.A. in Human Biology from Stanford University and her Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

    BioDr. Qatu is a board-certified, fellowship-trained pain management specialist at the Stanford Health Care Pain Management Center. He is also a clinical instructor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Division of Pain Medicine, at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    He specializes in the diagnosis and management of many different types of pain, including nerve pain, joint pain, cancer pain, low back and neck pain. Dr. Qatu obtained his medical degree from the New York University (NYU) Grossman School of Medicine. He continued on at NYU to complete his residency in anesthesiology after completing an internship in general surgery. He subsequently completed his pain medicine fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Qatu believes in utilizing a multimodal approach for pain management. This includes interventional, pharmacological, rehabilitative and psychological strategies. He is well-trained in a wide variety of interventional modalities that include injections, epidurals, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablations, peripheral nerve stimulation, spinal cord/dorsal root ganglion stimulation and minimally invasive decompression. His research focuses on the clinical use of neuromodulation for various types of pain. In addition, he has investigated whether certain demographic and socioeconomic variables, as well as psychiatric illness, affect the outcomes of various orthopaedic traumas and surgeries. Dr. Qatu has presented his research at conferences throughout the U.S. and in Canada.

    BioStanley Qi (publishing as Lei S. Qi) is a pioneer in the field of genome engineering and the architect of the foundational technologies that transitioned CRISPR from a "cutting" tool into a universal platform for Programmable Biology. As the inventor of CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) and CRISPR activation (CRISPRa), Qi established the first methods for the precise, reversible, and targeted regulation of the human genome without altering the DNA sequence.

    The Qi Lab integrates scalable genomic perturbation with live-cell and super-resolution imaging and computation-guided design to redefine the boundaries of cellular control. Under Dr. Qi’s leadership, the group has fundamentally expanded the genome engineering toolbox, evolving CRISPR from a single editing tool into a multidimensional platform for the precise control of dynamic and spatial cell states. This work includes establishing foundational technologies and architectures for precise epigenetic editing, multiplexed regulation of the transcriptome, programmable 3D genome organization, and spatial control of RNA logistics. By pioneering real-time visualization of chromatin dynamics and RNA in living cells, the lab provides an unprecedented window into the fundamental "control principles of life."

    This principle-driven technology lineage has moved into the clinic, with the lab's compact epigenetic editor currently in first-in-human clinical testing for FSHD muscular dystrophy (NCT06907875). This milestone represents a core mission of the lab: translating foundational engineering into next-generation therapeutics that act predictably as dynamic, complex systems.

    Beyond single-cell control, the Qi Lab is building a framework for synthetic cell–cell communication, with a particular emphasis on the bidirectional interplay between immune cells and neurons. The lab’s goal is to move beyond describing molecular parts to discovering fundamental control principles in living systems: how regulatory landscapes create stable states and memory, how spatial genome–RNA organization shapes dynamic responses, and how engineered cell–cell interactions can generate emergent multicellular behaviors.

    By integrating computational design with experimental biology, Dr. Qi aims to identify the generalizable rules linking molecular programs to systems-level physiology. He is a Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator and an Institute Scholar at the Sarafan ChEM-H, and is dedicated to shaping the technical and ethical frameworks that will define the future of human genome engineering.

  • Xiaoliang Qi

    BioMy current research interest is the interplay of quantum entanglement, quantum gravity and quantum chaos. The characterization of quantum information and quantum entanglement has provided novel understanding to space-time geometry, and relate the dynamics of chaotic many-body systems to the dynamics of space-time, i.e. quantum gravity theory. Based on recent progress in holographic duality (also known as AdS/CFT), my goal is to use tools such as tensor networks and solvable models to provide more microscopic understanding to the emergent space-time geometry from quantum states and quantum dynamics.

    I am also interested in topological states and topological phenomena in condensed matter systems.

    Clinical Associate Professor, Radiation Oncology - Radiation Therapy

    BioDr. Qian is a board-certified radiation oncologist and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology.

    In his clinical practice, he sub-specializes in genitourinary (including prostate and bladder cancer) and Head and Neck malignancies, but also treats a broad spectrum of other disease subsites including lung/thoracic, gastrointestinal, brain, lymphoma, and breast tumors. For each patient, he develops a comprehensive, individualized, and compassionate care plan customized to individual needs. His goal is to deliver the most effective cancer treatment to help patients enjoy the best possible health and quality of life.

    In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Qian serves as the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Stanford South Bay Cancer Center. He also serves as the Radiation Oncology Network Director of Clinical Research and has spearheaded opening of multiple NRG Oncology clinical trials at Stanford South Bay Cancer Center.

    Dr. Qian is also actively involved in the Stanford Radiation Oncology residency program. He created and oversees a monthly mentorship roundtable series to assist residents with multiple aspects of their clinical training and career progression.

    Outside of work, Dr. Qian enjoys spending time with his family and exploring the great outdoors of Northern California.

    BioJian Qin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Stanford University. His research focuses on development of microscopic understanding of structural and physical properties of soft matters by using a combination of analytical theory, scaling argument, numerical computation, and molecular simulation. He worked as a postdoctoral scholar with Juan de Pablo in the Institute for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago and with Scott Milner in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota under the supervision of David Morse and Frank Bates. His research covers self-assembly of multi-component polymeric systems, molecular origin of entanglement and polymer melt rheology, coacervation of polyelectrolytes, Coulomb interactions in dielectrically heterogeneous electrolytes, and surface charge polarizations in particulate aggregates in the absence or presence of flow.

    BioI, 邱泰然, Tairan Qiu (she/her/她), am an Assistant Professor of English Language Arts and Literacy Education in the Graduate School of Education. Prior to my doctoral studies, I was an ELA and ESOL teacher. As a transnational migrant and East Asian woman, my research is at the intersection of language, literacy, culture, race, gender, and im/migration. My research agenda is oriented around critically unpacking the dynamic language and literacy practices of transnational youth and families, centering their stories and experiences to shape research-informed change in their schools, communities, and homes, and sustaining their whole cultural, linguistic, and literate repertoire.

    I am committed to working in and with historically marginalized communities through community-centered research, teaching, and service. For example, funded by the Community Literacies Collaboratory, I am the co-founder of the University of Houston-Project Row Houses Community Literacies Center in Third Ward, Houston, TX. This arts-based Community Literacies Center offers weekly multiliteracies events for predominantly Black, Asian, Latiné, and translingual children, youth, and caregivers, where they celebrate their vibrant literacy practices in community with one another. Currently, I am working with a collective of nine transnational Girls of Color to narrate their transnational and translingual literacies and advocacy in and across their respective communities.

    BioDr. Michael Quach, MD serves as Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Quach is a board certified psychiatrist with over 20 years of administrative and clinical experience.

    Dr. Quach completed his medical training at Stanford University School of Medicine and psychiatric residency training at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. He served as Chief Resident in the Stanford Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and was recipient of the prestigious Stanford George Gulevich Humanistic Medicine Award in 2006.

    Dr. Quach is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), and he is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (FAPA). He is President of the Vietnamese Physician Assocation of Northern California. He is also President of the Viet-American Mental Health Network.     BioHelen Quinn received her Ph.D in physics at Stanford in 1967. She has taught physics at both Harvard and Stanford. Dr. Quinn work as a particle physicist has been honored by the Dirac Medal (from the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Italy) and the Klein Medal (from The Swedish National Academy of Sciences and Stockholm University) as well as the Sakurai Prize (from the American Physical Society), the Compton medal (from the American Institute of Physics, awarded once every 4 years) and the 2018 Benjamin Franklin Medal for Physics (from the Franklin Institute). She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Science and the American Philosophical Society. She is a Fellow and former president of the American Physical Society. She is originally from Australia and is an Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia.

    Dr. Quinn has been active in science education for some years, and since her retirement in 2010 this has been her major activity. She was a founding member of the Contemporary Physics Education Project (CPEP) which produced a well-known standard-model poster for schools in 1987 (see photo). She served as Chair of the US National Academy of Sciences Board on Science Education (BOSE) from 2009-2014. She was as a member of the BOSE study committee that developed the report “Taking Science to School” and chaired the committee for the “Framework for K-12 Science Education”, which is the basis of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and similar standards now adopted by about 30 states in the US, and has been influential internationally as well. She also contributed to follow-up NRC studies on assessment and implementation of NGSS. From 2015-2018 Helen served at the request of the President of Ecuador as a member of the “Comision Gestora” to help plan and guide the initial development of the National University of Education of Ecuador.

    Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Infectious Diseases

    BioDr. Orlando Quintero is a board-certified, fellowship trained internist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. He is also clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    As a clinician, Dr. Quintero diagnoses and treats infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients. This includes the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infections in patients who are immunosuppressed because of Solid Organ Transplantation, Bone Marrow (Hematopoeitic Cell) Transplants, Hematologic Malignancies, Chemotherapy for Solid Tumors, HIV who receive Chemotherapy, Solid Organ or Bone Marrow Transplants Immunomodulators for Auto-Immune Diseases and other forms of immunodeficiency.

    Dr. Quintero has published on topics including coronavirus in kidney transplant patients, prevention of cytomegalovirus in heart transplant patients, and prevention of urinary tract infections in renal transplant patients. His work has appeared in publications including Transplant Infectious Disease, Emerging Infectious Diseases, and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation.

    He has delivered presentations at meetings of organizations including the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, and American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Topics of his presentations have included prevention of cytomegalovirus, prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections, Chagas disease in New York City, and more.

    Currently, Dr. Quintero is conducting research on treatment of patients with COVID-19, prevention and treatment of invasive fungal infections of the gastrointestinal tract in immunocompromised patients, and the epidemiology of invasive fungal infections in heart transplant recipients.

    Among his awards, He has received honors for his teaching and research from Albert Einstein College. He also has earned recognition from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the American Society of Transplantation.

    Dr. Quintero’s volunteer community service includes participation in health fairs to promote HIV testing and hypertension control, plus disease management in the Garifuna population in New York – descendants of an Afro-indigenous population from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent.

    He is a member of the Infectious Disease Society of American, Infectious Diseases Association of California, American Society of Transplantation, and HIV Medicine Association.

    Assistant Professor (Research) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Major Laboratories and Clinical & Translational Neurosciences Incubator)

    BioDr. Quirin's laboratory develops minimally invasive methods to explore the causal role individual neurons play in the emergence of behavior. To this end, the lab's strength is the development of techniques which manipulate light to both detect and restoratively modulate brain activity down to the single-neuron scale. His lab continues to innovate with new tools which map these functional relationships onto the molecular and anatomical architecture of the brain. Utilizing these techniques, the lab aims to characterize how ensembles of neurons coordinate to encode and communicate information throughout the brain for sensing and behavior.

    Naveed Rabbani

    Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Informatics

    BioDr. Naveed Rabbani is a physician executive in health information technology and medical AI researcher. He currently serves as Associate Chief Medical Information Officer at Sutter Health, a large nonprofit health system in California. In this role, he leads a portfolio of enterprise-wide clinical IT programs including ambient documentation and generative AI implementation. He also holds a research appointment at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. A nationally recognized expert in health information technology, Dr. Rabbani is an Executive Committee Member for the American Academy of Pediatrics' Council on Clinical Information Technology and the Epic EHR Pediatric Primary Care Steering Board. As adjunct faculty at Stanford, he teaches in the Clinical Informatics Fellowship in the School of Medicine and conducts research in the Division of Clinical Informatics. Dr. Rabbani holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and an MD from Harvard Medical School.

    BioJennifer Rabbitts, MD is Professor and Chief of Pediatric Pain Management at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Rabbitts directs an NIH-funded research laboratory focused on improving long-term pain and health outcomes in children and adolescents undergoing surgery. Her research is devoted to understanding and preventing chronic postsurgical pain, a disabling condition affecting 20% youth undergoing major surgery. Her current research studies investigate the role of biopsychosocial mechanisms including child psychosocial factors, parental/family factors, and psychophysical processes underlying acute to chronic pain transition. Current clinical trials focus on testing feasibility and efficacy of psychosocial and complementary and integrative interventions to improve acute postsurgical pain and prevent transition to chronic pain.

    Dr Rabbitts is passionate about mentoring, and is a PI for the NIH HEAL PAIN Training grant in Maternal and Child Pain and Health at Stanford. She serves as section editor for Psychology, Psychiatry and Brain Neuroscience Section for Pain Medicine, and serves on the editorial boards for Pediatric Anesthesia and Journal of Pain.
