Yong Suk Lee
BioYong Suk Lee is the SK Center Fellow at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and is affiliated with the Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, the Center for Global Poverty and Development, and the Center for East Asian Studies.
Lee's research is in the fields of labor economics, technology and entrepreneurship, and urban economics. His current research examines digital technology and labor, focusing on how new technologies will affect labor and how societies react to new technologies. In relation to technology and labor, Lee's research also examines various aspects of entrepreneurship, e.g., entrepreneurship and economic growth, entrepreneurship education, and factors that promote productive entrepreneurship.
Prior to joining Stanford, Lee was an assistant professor of economics at Williams College in Massachusetts. He received his PhD in Economics from Brown University, a Master of Public Policy from Duke University, and bachelor's degree and master's degree in architecture from Seoul National University. Lee also worked as a real estate development consultant and architecture designer as he transitioned from architecture to economics. -

BioYOUNG JEAN LEE is a playwright, director, and filmmaker who has been called “the most adventurous downtown playwright of her generation” by The New York Times and “one of the best experimental playwrights in America” by Time Out New York. She’s the first Asian-American female playwright to have had a play produced on Broadway. She has written and directed ten shows in New York with Young Jean Lee's Theater Company. Her plays have been performed in more than eighty cities around the world and have been published by Dramatists Play Service, Samuel French, and Theatre Communications Group. Her short films have been presented at The Locarno International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and BAMcinemaFest. Lee is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, two OBIE Awards, a Prize in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a PEN Literary Award, a United States Artists Fellowship, and the Windham-Campbell Prize. She is a Denning Family Professor in the Arts and Nina C. Crocker Faculty Scholar at Stanford University.

Justin Leidwanger

BioJustin Leidwanger's work focuses on Mediterranean mobilities, interaction, and maritime heritage. Ships and ports, most recently in southwest Türkiye and southeast Sicily, are central to exploring these themes in the field, providing evidence for connections and the long-term dynamics that shaped communities amid economically, socially, and politically changing worlds. To this end, he is particularly drawn to the long arc of the Roman Mediterranean, including its temporal edges, from the emergence of Hellenistic states through the long late antiquity and beyond.
Between 2013 and 2019, he led investigations of the 6th-century Marzamemi 2 “church wreck” (Sicily), which sank while carrying nearly 100 tons of marble architectural elements. Work continues through underwater survey, 3D analysis, and publication as well as immersive museum-based and pop-up exhibits and other initiatives. Project 'U Mari extends this collaborative and community-based field research across southeast Sicily, interrogating the heritage of diverse but co-dependent interactions with and across the sea that have long defined the central Mediterranean. These connections offer a resource for deeper critical engagement with the past, more meaningful identities in the present, and more sustainable development in the future. One facet of this work examines the socioeconomic dynamics spanning three millennia of tuna fishing through maritime landscape archaeology and documentation of the fading material culture and traditional knowledge of the mattanza. Another mobilizes archaeology to better understand the creation and circulation of plastics as maritime material assemblages, offering a window into socio-environmental systems. These efforts simultaneously foreground heritage activism through community-based archaeology of the spaces, materialities, and memories of contemporary journeys of forced and undocumented migration across these waters.
Justin teaches courses and advises students on topics in Hellenistic, Roman, and Late Antique archaeology, Mediterranean heritage, economies and interaction, port networks, ceramic production and exchange, and Greco-Roman architecture and engineering. The Maritime Archaeology & Digital Heritage Lab (MEDLab) at the Archaeology Center serves as a fieldwork base and collaborative resource for digital modeling (structured light scanning, laser scanning, photogrammetry, GIS, network analysis) and pottery analysis (petrography, pXRF, computational morphological analysis).
Author of Roman Seas: A Maritime Archaeology of Eastern Mediterranean Economies (Oxford), and editor or co-editor of six more volumes, including Regional Economies in Action (Vienna) and Maritime Networks in the Ancient Mediterranean World (Cambridge), he is currently working on two books. The first, entitled Fluid Technologies: Innovation on the Ancient Mediterranean, arises from research with students in the field, lab, and museum, analyzing transport amphoras, port infrastructure, and other clues to ancient technologies of distribution. The second, The Tuna Trap, explores the entanglement of mobilities that have and continue to bind the shores surrounding the Strait of Sicily. -

BioRamrada Lekwuttikarn, MD is a pediatric dermatologist and clinical investigator in the Division of Pediatric Dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. She serves as a Research Scientist and Clinical Instructor with expertise in vascular anomalies, genetic skin diseases, and inflammatory skin disorders.
Dr. Lekwuttikarn received her medical degree and pediatric training at Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand, and completed subspecialty training in pediatric dermatology at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Thailand. She subsequently completed clinical research fellowships at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Stanford University. Prior to joining Stanford, she served as Chief of Pediatric Dermatology and Assistant Professor at Ramathibodi Hospital.
Her work focuses on translational research and clinical trials developing targeted therapies for complex pediatric skin diseases. -

BioDr. Anna Lembke received her undergraduate degree in Humanities from Yale University and her medical degree from Stanford University. She is currently Professor and Medical Director of Addiction Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine. She is also Program Director of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Fellowship, Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic, and a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Addiction Medicine.
In 2016, she published "Drug Dealer, MD – How Doctors Were Duped, Patients Got Hooked, and Why It’s So Hard to Stop" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2016), highlighted in the New York Times as one of the top five books to read to understand the opioid epidemic (Zuger, 2018).
Dr. Lembke appeared in the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma, an unvarnished look at the impact of social media on our lives.

BioChristopher J. Lemons, Ph.D., is a Professor of Education in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. His research focuses on improving academic outcomes for children and adolescents with intellectual, developmental, and learning disabilities. His recent research has focused on developing and evaluating reading interventions for individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. His areas of expertise include reading interventions for children and adolescents with learning and intellectual disabilities, data-based individualization, and intervention-related assessment and professional development. Lemons has secured funding to support his research from the Institute of Education Sciences and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, both within the U.S. Department of Education and from the National Institutes of Health. Lemons is a Senior Advisor of the National Center on Intensive Intervention and the Progress Center, both within American Institutes of Research (AIR) in Washington, DC. He also chairs the Executive Committee of the Pacific Coast Research Conference (PCRC) and serves as the President-Elect of the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division of Research Lemons is a recipient of the Pueschel-Tjossem Research Award from the National Down Syndrome Congress and the Distinguished Early Career Research Award from the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division for Research. In 2016, Lemons received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers, from President Obama. Theodore Leng, MD, MS, FACS

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Leng was the first surgeon in California to perform a subretinal transplant of adult neural stem cells into patients with macular degeneration and is actively researching cell and gene regenerative therapies for macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, Stargardt disease, and other degenerative conditions of the macula and retina. He also has an active program in imaging informatics, oculomics, and deep learning to identify patients who are at risk for eye and systemic disease. The end goal is earlier detection and rapid treatment to maximize outcomes.

Dr. Leon is a surgeon member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), and the Chinese American Academy of Cardiology (CAAC). His clinical and research expertise includes the surgical management of cardiopulmonary failure, heart valve disease, and ischemic heart disease, along with the application of stem cell therapy for myocardial infarction. BioStephanie Leonard, PhD, MS, is an Assistant Professor in the Dunlevie Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center for Discovery, Innovation, and Clinical Impact (https://dunleviemfm.stanford.edu/) and holds courtesy appointments in Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine and in Epidemiology and Population Health.
The goal of Dr. Leonard’s research is to advance positive health outcomes and experiences for pregnant individuals and newborns. She is interested in applying transdisciplinary methods to perinatal health research, with a focus on studying pregnancy-related morbidities in large data sources. Currently, her primary research interests are in utilizing large electronic health record datasets to conduct multi-site studies on chronic health condition treatments during pregnancy. To this end, she co-launched the OHDSI Pregnancy and Reproductive Health Work Group (https://www.ohdsi.org/workgroups/) and collaborates closely with the Harvard Program on Perinatal and Pediatric Pharmacoepidemiology (http://www.harvardpreg.org/). She also serves as a collaborator and mentor on a variety of obstetrics studies, including clinical trials, prospective and retrospective observational studies, and qualitative studies. Dr. Leonard's research program is currently funded by NHLBI (K01) and NICHD (U54).
Dr. Leonard trained in epidemiology at UCLA (MS) and UC Berkeley (PhD), where her research focused on nutrition in pregnancy. She completed a postdoc in Neonatal and Developmental Medicine at Stanford as part of the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences. -

Michael Lepech
C. L. Peck, Class of 1906, Professor and Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment
BioUnsustainable energy and material consumption, waste production, and emissions are some of today’s most pressing global concerns. To address these concerns, civil engineers are now designing facilities that, for example, passively generate power, reuse waste, and are carbon neutral. These designs are based foremost on longstanding engineering theory. Yet woven within this basic knowledge must be new science and new technologies, which advance the field of civil engineering to the forefront of sustainability-focused design.
My research develops fundamental engineering design concepts, models, and tools that are tightly integrated with quantitative sustainability assessment and service life modeling across length scales, from material scales to system scales, and throughout the early design, project engineering, construction, and operation life cycle phases of constructed facilities. My research follows the Sustainable Integrated Materials, Structures, Systems (SIMSS) framework. SIMSS is a tool to guide the multi-scale design of sustainable built environments, including multi-physics modeling informed by infrastructure sensing data and computational learning and feedback algorithms to support advanced digital-twinning of engineered systems. Thus, my research applies SIMMS through two complementary research thrusts; (1) developing high-fidelity quantitative sustainability assessment methods that enable civil engineers to quickly and probabilistically measure sustainability indicators, and (2) creating multi-scale, fundamental engineering tools that integrate with sustainability assessment and facilitate setting and meeting sustainability targets throughout the life cycle of constructed facilities.
Most recently, my research forms the foundation of the newly created Stanford Center at the Incheon Global Campus (SCIGC) in South Korea, a university-wide research center examining the potential for smart city technologies to enhance the sustainability of urban areas. Located in the smart city of Songdo, Incheon, South Korea, SCIGC is a unique global platform to (i) advance research on the multi-scale design, construction, and operation of sustainable built environments, (ii) demonstrate to cities worldwide the scalable opportunities for new urban technologies (e.g., dense urban sensing networks, dynamic traffic management, autonomous vehicles), and (iii) improve the sustainability and innovative capacity of increasingly smarter cities globally.
With an engineering background in civil and environmental engineering and material science (BSE, MSE, PhD), and business training in strategy and finance (MBA), I continue to explore to the intersection of entrepreneurship education, innovation capital training, and the potential of startups to more rapidly transfer and scale technologies to solve some of the world's most challenging problems. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research aims to improve the global quality of care for patients with Urologic Cancer with a particular focus on kidney cancer. We are investigating novel proteomic platforms and assays to diagnose kidney cancer and predict response to therapy. We are evaluating the comparative effectiveness of various kidney cancer surgeries and their impact on chronic kidney disease and its downstream effects. We are applying epidemiology, bioinformatics, and health services methods to urologic conditions.

Jure Leskovec

BioJure Leskovec is Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University. He is affiliated with the Stanford AI Lab, Machine Learning Group and the Center for Research on Foundation Models. In the past, he served as a Chief Scientist at Pinterest and was an investigator at Chan Zuckerberg BioHub. Leskovec recently pioneered the field of Graph Neural Networks and co-authored PyG, the most widely-used graph neural network library. Research from his group has been used by many countries to fight COVID-19 pandemic, and has been incorporated into products at Facebook, Pinterest, Uber, YouTube, Amazon, and more.
His research received several awards including Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship in 2011, Okawa Research award in 2012, Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship in 2012, Lagrange Prize in 2015, and ICDM Research Contributions Award in 2019. His research contributions have spanned social networks, data mining and machine learning, and computational biomedicine with the focus on drug discovery. His work has won 12 best paper awards and 5 10-year test of time awards at a premier venues in these research areas.

Kenneth Leung, MD, MS
Clinical Assistant Professor, Adult Neurology
BioDr. Leung is a board-certified neurologist who practices both comprehensive neurology and neuromuscular medicine. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology within the Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Leung has a particular interest in the diagnosis and management of a broad range of disorders affecting muscle and nerves, including motor neuron disease, neuropathy, neuromuscular junction disorders, and myopathy. He also is an avid clinician educator who develops course work, is involved in education research, and teaches medical students and neurology residents/fellows. He currently serves as Director of the Neurology Clerkship for medical students and Associate Director of the Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship within the Stanford University School of Medicine.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley where he was awarded the 2011 Departmental Citation Award for Excellence in Research in Immunology. In 2016 he earned his medical degree and concurrent master’s degree in applied anatomy from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He then completed his internal medicine internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and neurology residency at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. During this time, he developed a passion for neurology education and served on graduate medical education committees for curricular development, trainee well-being and resilience, and quality improvement. For his work in medical education, he was selected as a Harvard Macy Institute Scholar in 2018 and was awarded the 2020 Institute for Medical Education House Staff Excellence in Teaching Award. He was also inducted as a house staff in the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He then went on to complete a neuromuscular medicine fellowship at Stanford prior to joining as faculty.- -

BioDr. Leung is a board-certified, fellowship-trained pulmonologist, intensivist, and sleep specialist with Stanford Health Care and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Leung specializes in pulmonology, critical care, and sleep medicine, focusing on sleep-disordered breathing, chronic lung disease, and ventilator management in the intensive care unit (ICU) and at home. Dr. Leung also focuses on patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic respiratory failure, neuromuscular respiratory weakness, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, restrictive lung disease, and sleep apnea. She provides compassionate, patient-centered care, emphasizing shared decision-making and aligning medical treatments with patients’ values and preferences.
Dr. Leung’s research interests include optimizing care for patients who require home ventilation and those who have or have survived critical illnesses. She has prior research experience in prolonged mechanical ventilation, thoracic imaging, and asthma.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur long term interest is to have a better understanding of the natural antithrombotic pathways and the pathophysiology of vascular thrombosis. We have focused on thrombin, the key enzyme in the blood clotting cascade.Our goal is to develop new antithrombotic agents and devise new diagnostic tests for vascular thrombotic disorders.
