Florian Bach

BioI'm a molecular infection biologist by training, but shifted my focus from pathogens to hosts for my graduate research. During my PhD with Phil Spence in Edinburgh I studied both falciparum and vivax malaria using controlled human (re)infection models, collaborating closely with the groups of Simon Draper and Angela Minassian in Oxford. As a hybrid bioinformatician and experimentalist, I love systems immunology for answering complex questions about human health. For my postdoc, I study in how the human immune response to malaria evolves in infants as they become reinfected and age. I'm also interested in how such early-life immunological events, malaria and beyond, may affect vaccine responses and immune development later in life. I address this question by making use of a longitudinal study cohort of infants receiving monthly chemoprevention in Eastern Uganda, together with our collaborators at UC San Francisco and IDRC Uganda.

Adrian Matias Bacong

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAdrian M. Bacong, PhD, MPH is a social epidemiologist by training. His research seeks to identify social and structural factors that underlie health inequities by race, ethnicity, and immigration status. Specifically, his work has explored the role of socioeconomic factors in explaining health disparities by immigrant legal status and visa type. Furthermore, Adrian is interested in the effects of immigration on health. He received a NIH F31 award (1F31MD015931-01A1) to examine factors affecting the health of Filipino migrants to the U.S. compared to Filipinos remaining in the Philippines.
Adrian has also examined the intersections of race, ethnicity, and immigration status among older adults. Finally, Adrian written upon the role of data disaggregation as a method of public health critical race praxis. Currently, Adrian is researching the role of social and policy level factors underlying health disparities among immigrants. -
Cameron Scott Bader
Postdoctoral Scholar, Bone Marrow Transplantation
BioMy research is focused on using preclinical models to develop novel therapies which improve outcomes for patients receiving allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Currently, my work aims to establish strategies to reduce the risk of relapse after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation without exacerbating graft-versus-host disease or interfering with donor stem cell engraftment.

Halleh Balch

BioHalleh B. Balch is an experimental physicist, NSF Ocean Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow, and HHMI Hanna H. Gray Fellow at Stanford University. Her research focuses on developing novel nanophotonic sensors for in situ microscopy and spectroscopy onboard autonomous underwater vehicles to study marine and freshwater environments and their impact on climate and human health. Halleh received her PhD in Physics from the University of California Berkeley and her undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College in physics and literature.

Stephanie Balters

BioDr. Stephanie Balters is an instructor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is the director of the Empowerment Neuroscience Laboratory and studies how social factors such as interpersonal trauma and cultural biases impact brain function and mental health outcomes. Dr. Balters develops evidence-based interventions to improve well-being, work productivity, and team performance. She is passionate about embracing authenticity, vulnerability, and individual differences, and leveraging adverse experiences towards self-growth and achieving one’s full potential. Dr. Balters holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering and has earned a Ph.D. in Engineering Design. Her diverse career journey includes experiences at the Center for Design Research and Computer Science at Stanford University before transitioning to the School of Medicine. Dr. Balters is a Human Factors Specialist at NATO and facilitates Empowerment Workshops at Stanford University.

BioI like to define myself as an aspiring 360° scientist. What does that mean? Well, that it is a strong wish of mine to collect as much knowledge as possible in what are (at least in my opinion) the three main fields of science: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
This is why, after having received my Master in Mathematics at the University of Turin, Italy, I worked as a Ph.D. student in Physics at the University of Bremen, Germany. Recently I've been hired from the University of Stanford to proceed my academic path with a Post-doc position at the SUNCAT Center for Interface Science and Catalysis.
I will put all my efforts to provide the scientific community with important insights and discoveries. -
Alison Barrett

BioI'm an all-in-one biochemist, cell-culturist, and human-health enthusiast whose interests include therapeutics development, and tools for medical diagnostics.
I strive to maintain a healthy balance of breadth and depth in my areas of expertise, and have a strong affinity to interdisciplinary approaches. My background includes software development within the protein structure prediction module of the Rosetta software suite, design and initial development of cancer therapeutics, and basic research into understanding the mechanistic details of cell-cycle gene regulation.
My current research within the Tobias Lanz Lab aims to understand the role of certain targets of autoimmunity in Multiple Sclerosis and use this understanding to develop therapies and diagnostic aides. -
Batuhan Bayram
Postdoctoral Scholar, Human Gene Therapy
BioDr. Bayram is a medical doctor from Turkey, who earned his medical degree from Istanbul University- Cerrahpasa School of Medicine. After finishing medical school, he worked as a General Practitioner in Turkey and gained clinical experience at UCLA, Cleveland Clinic, and Tufts Medical Center. Dr. Bayram has been involved in several projects at Mellins Lab, focusing primarily on studying Natural Killer (NK) cells in Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS). He conducted perforin assays as part of the PANS NK study, aiming to understand the differences between PANS patients and healthy controls. Dr. Bayram has a keen interest in Rheumatology and Immunology, with aspirations to specialize as a rheumatologist in the future.

Thomas Bearrood

BioThomas Bearrood received his B.A. from St. Olaf College, double majoring in chemistry and math. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His graduate research was completed in Jeff Chan's lab, where he developed activity-based fluorescent and photoacoustic probes for biologically interesting molecules. Thomas came to Stanford in 2021 as a postdoctoral scholar in James Chen's lab. His current research focuses on understanding the role of ALDH1B1 in gastrointestinal cancers.

Louis Berrios

BioLouis joined the Peay lab in 2021 after completing his Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina. His research primarily focuses on the factors that govern the spatial distributions of bacteria and fungi as a function of microbe-microbe and plant-microbe interactions. From genomes to phenomes, Louis fuses both top-down and bottom-up experimental approaches to determine the genetic architecture that undergirds plant microbiome assemblages across landscapes.

Ahanjit Bhattacharya

BioAhanjit Bhattacharya is a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Steven Boxer at the Department of Chemistry. His core philosophy of research is "learning through building". Ahanjit carried out his doctoral research at the University of California San Diego. He worked on designing artificial cellular systems from fundamental building blocks. He also has a deep interest in understanding the origins and evolution of life. Ahanjit's major accomplishments are development of lipid compartments as programmable synthetic cells and organelles, and development of minimal biochemical strategies for synthesis of membrane-forming lipids. His experience with lipid materials inspired him to gain expertise in the area of membrane biophysics. Currently, Ahanjit is working on physical mechanisms of fusion of enveloped viruses with lipid membranes. He is also trying to understand structure-function relationships in complex archaeal lipids. He uses a host of biophysical tools which includes X-ray scattering, single particle microscopy, and electron microscopy. Ahanjit is passionate about communicating science and making it a transformational force for betterment of society and humanity.

Vasiliki Bikia

BioDr. Vasiliki Bikia is a postdoctoral researcher at the Byers Center for Biodesign, Stanford. She received her Advanced Diploma degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece, in 2017, and her Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, in 2021. Her Ph.D. research addressed the clinical need for providing non-invasive tools for cardiovascular monitoring leveraging machine learning and physics-based numerical modeling. In particular, she developed and tested novel healthcare algorithms for major biomarkers including central blood pressure, stroke volume, left ventricular elastance and arterial stiffness. At Stanford, she contributes to the Stanford Spezi framework, designing and prototyping the Spezi Data Pipeline tool for enhanced digital health data accessibility and analysis workflows. Her work includes exploring smartwatches for arrhythmia detection in children and integrating physical activity data for personalized care with major pharma companies.
Her research interests include health algorithms, digital biomarkers, machine learning, non-invasive monitoring, and the application of large language models for personalized healthcare, predictive analytics, and enhancing patient-clinician interactions.
