Junyoung Park

BioDr. Jun Young graduated from the Department of Biostatistics at the School of Public Health, Seoul National University, Korea. His major field of study is biostatistics, with a specific focus on the application of machine learning and statistical analysis to medical imaging and genetic data. During his doctoral studies, he concentrated on two primary research areas. Firstly, he dedicated himself to the development of deep learning models for medical images, primarily centered on T1-MRI and cognitive function test images related to Alzheimer's Disease. Secondly, he engaged in extensive genome-wide association analyses of medical images associated with Alzheimer's Disease, using statistical algorithms to uncover novel insights into the genetic factors contributing to this complex condition. Currently, as a postdoctoral fellow at the Greicius Lab at Stanford, he aims to develop statistical methods to discover novel structural variants and model polygenetic risk scores using long-read sequencing data.

Preethy Parthiban

BioMy research centers on how the innate immune system shapes tissue remodeling in health and disease. During my PhD, I uncovered a key role for resident macrophages in driving cardiac fibrosis, identifying a macrophage-derived chemokine that directly activates cardiac fibroblasts. Building on this foundation, my postdoctoral work at Stanford focuses on neutrophil–macrophage crosstalk in disrupted alveolarization in neonatal mice and patients. By integrating cellular, molecular, and translational approaches, I aim to define how innate immune pathways orchestrate extracellular matrix remodeling. Ultimately, my goal is to identify critical therapeutic targets that improve outcomes in ECM-related diseases.

AI4ALL Graduate Mentor, Stanford Pre-Collegiate StudiesBioI'm a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, advised by Professor Ehsan Adeli. I'm affiliated with the Stanford Translational AI (STAI) Lab and the Stanford Vision and Learning (SVL) Lab. I earned my PhD in computer science at UNC Chapel Hill under the advisement of Professor Henry Fuchs. I build and evaluate multimodal AI systems, from general-purpose methods for interactive computing to applications in healthcare. Currently, I'm working toward a future where multimodal AI can safely and reliably integrate into healthcare systems in order to improve the entire patient journey, from advanced diagnostic imaging and surgical support to all-day health monitoring and management, with the aim to achieve better therapeutic outcomes for cancer and aging-related diseases. I'm generally interested in opportunities that would allow me to continue to deepen my research expertise while leading and working on projects that benefit people everywhere, whether through foundational research, real-world products, or shaping how these systems are evaluated and deployed.
Previously, I was a visiting researcher at IDSIA USI-SUPSI working with Professor Piotr Didyk on the interpretability of multimodal language models (MLMs) with respect to capabilities such as visual perception. I've published in leading venues on topics such as remote health sensing (WACV, NeurIPS), 3D reconstruction (ECCV, MICCAI), LLM-based conversational agents for personal health (EMNLP, Nature Communications), and energy-efficient operation of smart glasses (ISMAR). I've done internships at Google AR/VR, Google Consumer Health Research, and Kitware. -

BioMy research interests lie at the intersection of materials science and condensed matter physics. I work on thin film synthesis of oxide and metal systems by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). In addition, I work on projects involving spectroscopic probes of thin film systems, including angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) measurements.

BioDr. Suman Patra is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Chemistry at Stanford University, working under the mentorship of Prof. Edward I. Solomon. His research focuses on uncovering the mechanistic intricacies of non-coupled binuclear copper (NBC) enzymes, particularly tyramine β-monooxygenase (TBM), which catalyzes oxygen activation and selective C–H bond hydroxylation.His work integrates high-resolution spectroscopy, transient kinetics, and protein biochemistry to probe the formation, structure, and reactivity of short-lived copper-oxygen intermediates. As part of this effort, he performs cell culture and protein purification, enabling the isolation of active, recombinant copper enzymes for detailed spectroscopic and mechanistic studies. Through a multi-spectroscopic approach, primarily UV-Vis, CD, MCD, EXAFS, EPR, resonance Raman, and stopped-flow absorption spectroscopy, he investigates how the geometric and electronic structure of the active sites modulate reactivity and enable O₂ activation without direct Cu–Cu coupling.
Dr. Patra earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata, under the supervision of Prof. Abhishek Dey, where he developed iron porphyrin-based electrocatalysts for the selective reduction of CO₂. His research emphasized mechanistic analysis using electrochemical methods coupled with in situ spectro-electrochemistry to monitor redox transitions and catalytic intermediates under applied potentials. These studies were complemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which he used to model key intermediates, protonation pathways, and redox energetics, thereby providing molecular-level insight into how second-sphere interactions and ligand environments influence catalytic behaviour. His integrative experimental–computational approach provided a detailed understanding of structure-function relationships in multi-electron CO₂ reduction.
The mechanistic perspective and technical skillset developed during his doctoral work, particularly in combining spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and computation, now form the foundation of his postdoctoral research. His current studies extend those same principles to more complex metalloenzyme systems, addressing similar core questions about the role of electronic structure, metal-ligand coordination, and local environment in controlling reactivity. His long-term goal is to bridge synthetic and biological catalysis through a mechanistic lens, contributing to the development of efficient, selective systems for small-molecule activation and sustainable energy transformations.
Dr. Patra received his M.Sc. in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati after qualifying the national IIT-JAM examination and completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Over the course of his academic training, he has cultivated a multidisciplinary research identity that spans coordination chemistry, spectroscopy, electrochemical catalysis, and theoretical modelling. His scientific vision centres on using spectroscopic and computational insight to guide the rational design of catalysts for environmentally relevant redox chemistry. -

Her research focuses on generating evidence for interventions and policy recommendations aimed at improving the dietary quality of children to impact their health and development. Currently, she is employing a community-engaged approach to design nutrition interventions and policy recommendations that aim to reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods among low-income children to narrow the gap in health disparities.

BioRui (/ˈreɪ/) received her B.Sc. in Cognitive Neuroscience from Brown University, and her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Pennsylvania. She is interested in understanding how adolescents and young adults make social decisions in the context of psychological and neural development. Her research focuses on social risk taking, or risk taking behaviors that bring social consequences. Some of the questions that her research tries to answer include: what motivates people to take social risks, and how does social risk taking contribute to adolescent health and well-being?

I completed my Bachelor of Science at Kings University, focusing on biology and did undergrad research on Pink Pigmented Facultative Methylotrophs - bacteria that degrade petrochemicals. Following graduation, I became a Research Technician with Exciton Technologies Inc., a research and development company producing silver-based wound care products for treating infections. In 2016, I joined Dr. Benjamin Willing’s lab in Agriculture, Food, and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Alberta and completed a Master of Science focusing on how certain husbandry changes impact the development of the gastrointestinal microbiota, Salmonella infection resistance, and immune response in broiler production. In 2024, I completed my PhD in the department of Microbiology & Immunology at UBC, working with Dr. Carolina Tropini to understand the impact of osmotic stress on the gut microbiome.

Amalia Perna

BioDr. Perna received her education at the University of Urbino (BSc in Biological Science) and at the University of Trieste (MSc in Functional Genomics).
She obtained her Ph.D. in Neuroscience/Medical Sciences in 2021, from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) in collaboration with the Swiss Integrative Center for Human Health (SICHH). During her doctoral studies, she investigated the molecular players involved in the neurodegenerative process, with special attention to Notch signaling modulation in the neuronal demise after kainic acid (KA)-induced excitotoxicity
With funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), Dr. Perna joined Prof. Thomas Montine's lab at Stanford University and extended her doctoral research work to single-cell technologies such as single-nucleus RNA-seq. In February 2022 she was appointed as a postdoctoral fellow in Montine Lab.
Dr. Perna’s research aims to elucidate the modulation of signaling pathways in the different cell types of the brain after the perturbation of its homeostasis. She is also interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal regeneration/recovery after damage and in neurodegenerative diseases. -

She went on to complete an M.S. in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, strengthening her scientific foundation before earning her M.D. at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Her research career has spanned diverse yet interconnected realms of neuroscience — from investigating post-stroke cognitive decline at MUSC, to exploring the neurodevelopmental basis of disorders such as Rett syndrome at the NIH National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, to contributing to neurosurgery research at Wake Forest with a focus on cognition and perioperative outcomes.
Now, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Neuroanesthesia Laboratory of Dr. Miles Berger at Stanford, Dr. Phoenix is uniting her lifelong fascination with the brain and cognitive decline, and her future clinical practice in anesthesiology. Her current work focuses on elucidating the mechanisms behind — and developing early detection strategies for — postoperative delirium in the elderly surgical population.
Through this fellowship, Dr. Phoenix is building the foundation for her career as a physician-scientist, committed to advancing patient care while pursuing research that safeguards cognitive health in the perioperative setting. -

Edward Pimentel

BioEdward Pimentel is a postdoctoral scholar in the lab of Prof. Tom Soh. After receiving his BS in Chemistry at BYU and pursuing the total synthesis of a natural product with anticancer activity in the lab of Dr. Merritt Andrus, Edward was the first graduate student in the lab of Dr. Jeffrey Martell, where his PhD work centered on using DNA nanostructures to accelerate catalytic reactions and building an ultrahigh-throughput DNA-encoded reaction screening platform. Now as a postdoctoral scholar, his research focuses on applying functional nucleic acids to solve problems in diagnostic and sensing for human health. In addition to his research, Edward is a passionate mentor and has been involved in mentoring programs at every stage of his career. He is now a coordinator for the SURPAS Someone Like Me Peer Mentoring program.

BioI am primarily a marine researcher; my PhD is in maritime archaeology specifically focusing on the archaeology of ships. I have been fascinated by the sea and by shipwrecks since reading Jacques Cousteau's The Silent World as a child. The combination of diving and archaeology seemed to me then, and still seems to me now, an unusually fortunate way to make a living.
I read Archaeology and then Maritime Archaeology at the University of Southampton. I then spent two years as Assistant Rural Surveyor at the National Trust's Lanhydrock estate in Cornwall. Whilst that might look like a tangent (and it felt like it at the time) it was an experience that proved more formative than I had anticipated. My responsibilities covered a substantial portion of the Trust's Cornish portfolio, including areas of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site. Managing working harbours and conservation sites in an operational context, answerable to communities as much as to institutional objectives, gave me an understanding of coastal and marine heritage that you frankly cannot get as an academic.
I completed my PhD in 2023, under the supervision of Professor Jon Adams and Dr Julian Whitewright. I examined an assemblage of two hundred merchant vessels through the integration of archaeological remains and historical records, using this dataset to explore the impact of changing systems within the British Empire on merchant shipping and the development of shipbuilding technologies across the nineteenth century. During and around this period I worked to build the practical experience that underpins good maritime archaeology. Underwater, this took me to Roman harbour sites and anchorages in Lebanon (at Anfeh, Batroun, and Tyre) to an underwater excavation in Kalmar, Sweden, to survey projects across the British Isles from the Isle of Lewis to the Pembrokeshire coast, and to geophysical work in Uruguay. On land I directed and contributed to geophysical surveys across Europe, including at Ephesus in Turkey and at a British Museum excavation of an Indo-Roman trade site in northwest India. The range of these projects was deliberate: I was trying to become the kind of archaeologist who could work anywhere and with anything, and fieldwork in different countries and conditions is the only reliable way to do that. Something worked because I found myself being consulted on the archaeological standards for the wreck of Shackleton's Endurance following its discovery in 2022.
A period at Historic England followed, first as Senior Policy Advisor for Underwater Cultural Heritage where I supported the development of government legislation and prepared guidance on the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. I moved to Technical Manager of the Marine Data Exchange Heritage Accelerator, where I led a team integrating offshore heritage data from commercial contractors and wind farm corporations into the National Marine Heritage Record. This work required collaborating with the Crown Estate, DCMS, and DEFRA, and gave me an understanding of how the marine sector operates commercially that sits alongside but distinct from my research background.
I joined Stanford in September 2025 as a Postdoctoral Scholar holding a joint appointment between the Stanford Robotics Center and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. At the Robotics Center I manage the Oceans Flagship, a programme developing next-generation remotely operated vehicle capabilities for scientific discovery at depth, working with Professor Oussama Khatib and Dr. Steve Cousins. In parallel, I work with Dr. Krish Seetah on research into the environmental impacts of shipwrecks, exploring the interactions between anthropogenic material and the marine ecosystem within the developing field of Maritime Heritage Ecology. -
Julia Rachel Plank

BioI am a postdoctoral researcher in the BRain Imaging, Development, and GEnetics (BRIDGE) Laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Currently my work focuses on the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for improving understanding of the neuropathophysiology underlying neuropsychiatric disorders with a genetic basis.
My PhD investigated the use of neuroimaging techniques (diffusion MRI, quantitative magnetization transfer, magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging, electroencephalography) for detection of neuroinflammation in human participants.
My research interests are centered on the clinical applications of MRI for elucidation of pathology and improving diagnosis and treatment. -

BioDr. Alexandra Polasko is a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine in the Department of Urology in Dr. James Brooks's lab. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. from UCLA in Civil and Environmental Engineering in Dr. Shaily Mahendra's lab and bachelors from UC Berkeley. Before coming to Stanford, she was a postdoctoral fellow at UCLA in the School of Dentistry, Oral Biology Division under Dr. Hung Ton-That where she studied the role motility plays as a virulence factor in oral pathogens. Currently, Dr. Polasko's research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms that drive benign prostate hyperplasia, which is the abnormal growth of the prostate and affects nearly 80% of men over eighty and can result in impaired urine storage and voiding as well as renal failure. She is a co-inventor on two patents and received UCLA's prestigious Distinguished Teaching Award for Teaching Assistants (2021).

BioWeiyu Qian is a postdoctoral researcher at the PLUSE Institute. He is focusing on the spectroscopic characterization of fleeting species and chemical reaction paradigm. He received Walter Benjamin Fellowship from DFG.
