Safari Fang

BioSafari Fang is a Ph.D. candidate in the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER). She is an interdisciplinary scientist and ocean conservation leader with proven experience and passion for connecting people from diverse backgrounds to facilitate deep, meaningful collaborations aimed at solving environmental challenges. Growing up next to a polluted Yangtze River in China, Safari aspired from an early age to work in environmental conservation, and she connects deeply with communities that live the real consequences of pollution and habitat destruction. Her current research focuses on aquaculture and fisheries, food security, and community-based marine conservation. Through her research and action, Safari is engaging diverse stakeholders in the global seafood system and fostering collaborations among sectors for the sustainable use of ocean resources.
Safari is an alumna of the Blue Pioneers Program, a leadership development program for ocean conservationists from Asia. She sits on the board of directors of Demos Education Hub, an environmental education and community development NGO in Hainan, China. Safari has lived and worked in several countries, including China, the U.S., Iceland, Germany, and France. She speaks fluent Chinese and English and enjoys reading, swimming, kayaking, hiking, whale watching, yoga, meditation, and creative writing. -

Yousof Fawzy
MD Student with Scholarly Concentration in Community Health, expected graduation Spring 2026
BioYousof Fawzy is an experienced Emergency Medical Services Supervisor, Clinical Coordinator, and Healthcare Safety Professional. He has held appointments in both clinical and operational capacities across the private and public sectors. Before attending Stanford, he served as the Safety Operations Leader for Kaiser Permanente's medical centers across Santa Clara County. At Kaiser, he developed and managed an integrated workplace safety program while spearheading initiatives related to COVID safety, threat management, and workplace violence in healthcare. Previously, in his EMS roles, he worked at high-profile events including the Grammy Awards on the Red Carpet and managed the clinical operations of the Golden State Warriors Chase Center Arena in San Francisco.
Yousof's scholarly interests include social emergency medicine, harm reduction, and utilizing epidemiological frameworks to address health disparities in vulnerable populations. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of California Los Angeles, where he studied Integrative Biology and Physiology. Yousof aspires to use his medical education as a means to dismantle systemic barriers to healthcare access and address the gaps in care for marginalized populations. -
Zahra Fazal

BioZahra Fazal, from Morogoro, Tanzania, is pursuing a master’s degree in epidemiology and clinical research at Stanford School of Medicine as a Knight Hennessey scholar. She graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada with a bachelor’s degree with distinction in Global health and nutrition as a Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow scholar. Zahra plans to apply her graduate degree towards researching health inequities amongst under-served populations and advocating for data-driven policy change within Sub-Saharan Africa. During her undergraduate degree, Zahra founded a club for first-generation and low-income (FGLI) students, launched a podcast and hosted Canada’s first conference for FGLI students bringing together universities and education ministers across Canada. Inspired by her advocacy, UBC established a scholarship for FGLI students. Zahra was also a research assistant on a patient-partner project at Arthritis Research Canada investigating COVID-19 outcomes in patients with immunosuppression within Canada. Zahra has received the UBC Dean Blythe Eagles Medal, UBC International Community Achievement Award and is a 2022 Rhodes East Africa finalist.

Sarah Fendrich

Student Employee, Social Sciences DivisionBioSarah is interested in the design and evaluation of decision support systems for local and regional-scale climate adaptation. Her research aims to explore the social and cognitive processes through which decision support systems — both digital decision support tools and the activities of regional climate resilience networks — shape adaptation planning and implementation, organizational learning, and environmental outcomes. She is specifically interested in supporting more adaptive and integrated water resources management. Sarah’s current work focuses on better understanding the collaborative landscape of federal decision support activities using social network analysis, as well as the decision-making and planning processes of local stormwater managers in coastal communities across the U.S. using a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, interviews, and document analysis.
Sarah holds a BA in cognitive neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to coming to Stanford, she worked on health care innovation and equity research at the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit and the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics. -
Steven Feng

BioI'm a Stanford Computer Science PhD student and NSERC PGS-D scholar, working with the Stanford AI Lab and Stanford NLP Group. I am co-advised by Michael C. Frank and Noah Goodman as part of the Language & Cognition (LangCog) and Computation & Cognition (CoCo) Labs. I am grateful to receive support from Amazon Science, Microsoft AFMR, and StabilityAI.
My ultimate goal is to blend knowledge from multiple disciplines to advance AI research. My current research centers around aligning foundation model and human learning and capabilities, particularly in reasoning, generalization, and efficiency. I have explored ways to improve the controllability of language and visual generation models, and integrate structured and multimodal information to enhance their reasoning capabilities.
I'm investigating psychologically and cognitively inspired methods for continual learning, self-improvement, and advanced reasoning in foundation models. I'm also exploring methods to bridge the data efficiency gap between human and model learning while shedding further light on human cognitive models and our efficient language and vision acquisition capabilities.
Previously, I was a master's student at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), where I worked with Eduard Hovy and Malihe Alikhani on language generation, data augmentation, and commonsense reasoning. Before that, I was an undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo, where I worked with Jesse Hoey on dialogue agents and text generation.
My research contributions have been recognized with several publications at major conferences and a best paper award at INLG 2021. I am also an Honorable Mention for the Jessie W.H. Zou Memorial Award and CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award.
I am a co-instructor for the Stanford CS25 Transformers course, and mentor and advise several students. I also led the organization of CtrlGen, a controllable generation workshop at NeurIPS 2021, and was involved in the GEM benchmark and workshop for NLG evaluation.
In my free time, I enjoy gaming, playing the piano and guitar, martial arts, and table tennis. I am also the founder and president of the Stanford Piano Society. -
Jill Grey Ferguson

BioJill Grey Ferguson is a PhD student in the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources. Jill is also the co-founder of LibertyHomes, a nonprofit dedicated to scaling inclusive utility investment systems with robust consumer protections that make home energy upgrades accessible to all people without credit checks, upfront cost, or debt. Prior to starting LibertyHomes, Jill was a Truman-Albright Fellow at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy where she led the Rural Research Initiative. She has worked at the US Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy as a solar technology fellow and as a photovoltaic cell researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Jill earned a bachelor of science in material science engineering from the University of Virginia.
