Thomas Hayden

BioThomas Hayden is Director of the Master of Arts in Earth Systems, Environmental Communication Program at Stanford University. He teaches science and environmental communication and journalism in Stanford's School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences and Graduate Program in Journalism. He came to Stanford in 2008, following a career of reporting and writing about science and environmental issues for national and international publications.
Hayden’s journalism career began at Newsweek magazine in New York, where he was an American Association for the Advancement of Science Mass Media fellow in 1997. In 2000, he moved to US News & World Report in Washington, DC, where he covered science, the environment, medicine, culture and breaking news as a senior writer. Since 2005, Hayden has been a freelance journalist. His cover stories have appeared in publications including Wired, Smithsonian, National Geographic, Washington Post Book World and many others. He has reported from South America, Europe, and Asia; and North America from New Orleans to the Canadian Arctic.
Hayden is coauthor of two books. He wrote the 2007 national bestseller On Call in Hell, about battlefield medicine in Iraq, with Navy doctor Richard Jadick. In 2008 he collaborated on the critically acclaimed Sex and War, about the biological evolution and cultural development of warfare through human history, with Malcolm Potts of the University of California, Berkeley. He was the lead writer on the 2010 9th revision of the iconic National Geographic Atlas of the World. And he was coeditor of and a contributor to The Science Writers' Handbook: Everything You Need to Know to Pitch, Publish and Prosper in the Digital Age, published in 2013.
In 2005, Hayden taught science writing in The Writing Workshops at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore with his wife and fellow science journalist, Erika Check Hayden. He was a founding faculty member in the annual Banff Centre Science Communications workshop, where he taught from 2006 until 2010, and was involved as a speaker and trainer with the Leopold Leadership Program for environmental scientists from 2000 to 2013.
Hayden graduated from his hometown school, the University of Saskatchewan, with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (honours) degree in applied microbiology and food science, and received an MS degree in marine biology from the University of Southern California. He completed five years of doctoral study in biological oceanography at USC, before leaving science for journalism with A.B.D. status. He spent more than nine months at sea cumulatively over five years, conducting oceanographic research from Southern California to San Francisco Bay, and from Antarctica to Easter Island.
In 2015, Hayden helped launch a new graduate degree program in Stanford's School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences. The Master of Arts in Earth Systems, Environmental Communication degree is focussed on the study and practice of effective, engaging, accurate communication of complex environmental and Earth systems information to nonspecialist audiences. -
Melanie Hayden Gephart

BioI am a brain tumor neurosurgeon, treating patients with malignant and benign tumors, including gliomas, brain metastases, meningiomas, and schwannomas. I direct the Stanford Brain Tumor Center and the Stanford Brain Metastasis Consortium, collaborative unions of physicians and scientists looking to improve our understanding and treatment of brain tumors. My laboratory seeks greater understanding of the mechanisms driving tumorigenesis and disease progression in malignant brain tumors. We study how rare cancer cell populations survive and migrate in the brain, inadvertently supported by native brain cells. We develop novel cerebrospinal fluid-based biomarkers to track brain cancer treatment response, relapse, and neurotoxicity. Our bedside-to-bench-to-bedside research model builds on a foundation of generously donated patient samples, where we test mechanisms of brain cancer growth, develop novel pre-clinical models that reliably recapitulate the human disease, and facilitate clinical trials of new treatments for patients with brain cancer.

David J Hayes

BioDavid J. Hayes is a Professor of Practice at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and affiliated faculty at Stanford Law School. He specializes in energy, environmental, and natural resources law and policy. Hayes served in the White House as Special Assistant to President Biden for Climate Policy and was the Senate-confirmed Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer at the U.S. Department of the Interior for Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. In addition to his public service, Hayes was Executive Director of the State Energy & Environmental Impact Center at the NYU School of Law, where he worked with state attorneys general on climate, environment and clean energy initiatives; Chairman of the Board of the Environmental Law Institute; and partner and Global Chair of the Environment, Land and Resources Department at Latham & Watkins. Hayes is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Stanford Law School.

Elliott L Hazen

BioI received my master's of science in the Spring of 2003 from the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and my PhD from Duke University in 2008. Currently, I am working at NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center in Monterey, CA. My research interests span oceanography, fisheries ecology to climate change modeling, specifically examining species-habitat relationships in the ocean, predator-prey dynamics, and climate projections on marine top predator biodiversity. My publications have addressed a range of topics from fine-scale foraging ecology of top predators, dynamic ocean management of protected species, to modeling the effects of climate change on top predator habitat and biodiversity.

BioHui "Heather" He, PA-C, MSHS-PA is an advanced practice provider who specializes in breast surgery and plastic reconstructive surgery. She completed the Masters in Health Sciences for Physician Assistants Program at the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences. Heather has a special interest in benign and malignant conditions of the breast, reconstruction after ablative treatment, and cancer-related lymphedema management. She finds joy in performing 3D nipple areolar tattoos to empower breast cancer patients to feel whole again.

Yahui He
Postdoctoral Scholar, Archaeology
BioYahui He is an environmental archaeologist specializing in archaeobotany in East Asia. Her research investigates the dynamics of human-plant relationships in multi-scalar socio-political contexts, focusing on the materiality of plants in processes of sedentism and urbanism.
Her PhD and ongoing research work in the Northern Zone, China (northern Loess Plateau and southern Mongolian Plateau) utilizes multi-proxy methods, including starch, phytolith, fungi, and use-wear analyses, to explore plant-based food and drink practices across different social contexts, such as household, community, and mortuary settings. Yahui’s collaborative research extends to studies on plant exploitation and dispersal, as well as related technologies such as plant food fermentation and bast fiber production across mainland China and beyond, including Erlitou in Henan and others in Taiwan and Honduras.
Prior to joining the Stanford Archaeology Center as a postdoctoral scholar, Yahui obtained her PhD at Stanford and was a Li Foundation in New York Fellow at the Needham Research Institute in Cambridge, UK. -

BioAs a Master’s student in Translational Research and Applied Medicine at Stanford Medicine, I’m passionate about bridging the gap between scientific discovery and real-world clinical impact. My career interests lie at the intersection of science and business, with a focus on advancing the development and implementation of novel therapeutics—particularly in the areas of genetics, rare disease, and neurodegenerative diseases.
I bring experience in clinical research, including work on the BabySeq Project, a pioneering study of genomic newborn screening (gNBS). This experience sparked my ongoing interest in how genomic technologies can be implemented to identify actionable health risks early in life. I continue to contribute to this field through my involvement with the International Consortium on Newborn Sequencing (ICoNS), a global initiative advancing gNBS research. -
Rachael Healy

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch interests: youth, working-class life, colonialism, urban landscapes, intergenerational trauma, (contentious) commemoration, collective memory, time and space/place-making, narrative and storytelling, borderlands, post-conflict space, Northern Ireland/Ireland, political identity, precarity, hope(lessness).
Broadly, my PhD research focuses on youth culture and teenage life in post-conflict Belfast. I am interested in discourses of intergenerational trauma and community spaces and how these are seen as points of relation in a larger communal making-sense of a growing youth mental health crisis in a West Belfast neighbourhood. My research contributed to new understandings about how vernaculars of political violence shift according to new and ever-expanding pressures and priorities in community life and cultural cultivation.
Prior to joining Stanford, I received a first-class honors degree in Global Health and Social Medicine from King’s College London. I also received a Master of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology from the Graduate Institute Geneva. Before attending university, I worked for four years in various health advocacy and youth work roles, including in South Africa and Scotland. -

Dr. Heath's research has been primarily focused on the mechanisms and applications of brain stimulation therapies, in particular repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. Her research involves both basic and clinical components with the aim of improving the efficacy of these therapies for the treatment of disorders such as depression and Alzheimer's disease. -
