Colin Kahl

BioColin Kahl is the Steven C. Házy Senior Fellow at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC), an interdisciplinary research hub in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He is also the faculty director of CISAC’s Program on Geopolitics, Technology, and Governance, and a professor of political science (by courtesy).
From April 2021-July 2023, Dr. Kahl served as the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense. In that role, he was the principal adviser to the Secretary of Defense for all matters related to national security and defense policy and represented the Department as a standing member of the National Security Council Deputies’ Committee. He oversaw the writing of the 2022 National Defense Strategy, which focused the Pentagon’s efforts on the “pacing challenge” posed by the PRC, and he led the Department’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and numerous other international crises. He also led several other major defense diplomacy initiatives, including: an unprecedented strengthening of the NATO alliance; the negotiation of the AUKUS agreement with Australia and the United Kingdom; historic defense force posture enhancements in Australia, Japan, and the Philippines; and deepening defense and strategic ties with India. In June 2023, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III awarded Dr. Kahl the Department of Defense Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest civilian award presented by the Secretary of Defense.
During the Obama Administration, Dr. Kahl served as Deputy Assistant to President Obama and National Security Advisor to the Vice President Biden from October 2014 to January 2017. He also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East from February 2009 to December 2011, for which he received the Outstanding Public Service Medal in July 2011.
Dr. Kahl is the co-author (along with Thomas Wright) of Aftershocks: Pandemic Politics and the End of the Old International Order (New York: St. Martin’s Press, 2021) and the author States, Scarcity, and Civil Strife in the Developing World (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 2006). He has also published numerous article on U.S. national security and defense policy in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, International Security, the Los Angeles Times, Middle East Policy, the National Interest, the New Republic, the New York Times, Politico, the Washington Post, and the Washington Quarterly, as well as several reports for the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), a non-partisan think tank in Washington, DC.
Dr. Kahl previously taught at Georgetown University and the University of Minnesota, and he has held fellowship positions at Harvard University, the Council on Foreign Relations, CNAS, and the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and International Engagement.
He received his B.A. in political science from the University of Michigan (1993) and his Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University (2000). -

My most recent scholarly activities concentrate on working as a team to capitalize on the data stored in electronic medical records, HIV disease modeling and using electronic medical records for outcome research and developing a mentorship program for early career scientists.

BioJoseph M. Kahn is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. His research addresses communication and imaging through optical fibers, including modulation, detection, signal processing and spatial multiplexing. He received A.B. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from U.C. Berkeley in 1981 and 1986. From 1987-1990, he was at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Crawford Hill Laboratory, in Holmdel, NJ. He was on the Electrical Engineering faculty at U.C. Berkeley from 1990-2003. In 2000, he co-founded StrataLight Communications, which was acquired by Opnext, Inc. in 2009. He received the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1991 and is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.

Thomas Kailath

BioThomas Kailath obtained a B.E.(Telecom) degree from the College of Engineering in Pune, India, in !956 and M.S. (1959) and Sc.D. (1961) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
After a year at the Jet Propulsion Laboratories, he joined Stanford University in 1963 as an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, was promoted to Professor in 1968, and named to the Hitachi America Chair in 1988. He assumed Emeritus status in June 2001. His research has spanned a large number of engineering and mathematical disciplines, and he has mentored over a hundred doctoral and postdoctoral students. Their joint efforts have led to over 300 journal papers, several of which have received outstanding paper prizes; they have also led to a dozen patents and to several books and monographs. He has also co-founded and served as a director of several private and public high-technology companies. and has been
He is a fellow of the IEEE and a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, the US National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World and the Royal Spanish Academy of Engineering. In 2006, he was inducted into the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsHow are genes regulated to construct a developmental program? How do signals received from other cells change the program and coordinate it for multicellular development? The approach taken by our laboratory group to answer these questions utilizes biochemistry and genetics; genetics to isolate mutants that have particular defects in development and biochemistry to determine the molecular basis of the defects. We study swarming in Myxococcus xanthus that builds fruiting bodies.

Alexander D. Kaiser

BioAlexander Kaiser, PhD, is an applied mathematician and computational scientist who researches modeling and simulation of heart valves, focused on congenital heart valve disease and its surgical treatment. His recent research explores simulation-guided design of aortic valve repair of complex congenital heart defects. He has developed novel, nearly first-principles modeling methods for heart valves called elasticity-based design. These methods produce robust and realistic flows in fluid-structure interaction simulations. Dr. Kaiser is an Instructor in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University working with Michael Ma and Alison Marsden. He completed his PhD in Mathematics with Charles Peskin at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, where he was awarded the Kurt O. Friedrichs Prize for Outstanding Dissertation in Mathematics.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAs a breastfeeding medicine physician, I am passionate about advocating for mother-infant dyads and supporting their breastfeeding journeys. Additionally, I am interested studying and addressing disparities in initiation and duration of breastfeeding, particularly in lower-resourced populations, by building and advancing community partnerships.
I am also interested in the use of digital health tools to advance upstream determinants of health in community-based settings. My current funded research projects include: 1) Providing a telehealth-based, weight control program to children with obesity from lower-income, racial and ethnic minority families (Gardner GOALS) and 2) Assessing and addressing disparities in healthy behaviors in families from under-resourced settings through the use of a secure, multilingual mobile neighborhood app (Our Voice: Beyond Clinic Walls). -

BioAnusha Murali Kakolu, PhD (she/her) received her PhD in clinical psychology from Palo Alto University and completed her predoctoral pediatric psychology residency at the Cleveland Clinic, followed by a postdoctoral residency at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center. She also holds a master’s degree in mental health counseling and behavioral medicine from Boston University School of Medicine.
Anusha’s research and clinical work focus particularly on pediatric health psychology and anxiety. She has a strong commitment to supporting diverse youth and their families, especially those with complex medical conditions. Her training spans multiple specialties, including solid organ transplant, nephrology, endocrinology, genetic conditions, hematology, and oncology.
Anusha is also a passionate educator, serving as adjunct faculty in the doctoral and master’s programs at various universities. She is deeply dedicated to teaching, mentorship, and the supervision of students and trainees and is actively involved in several mentorship programs with the APA. Sharada Kalanidhi

Sharada is developing a new field, Mathematical Medicine, which applies pure mathematical frameworks to genomic and multi-omic data for quantitative, personalized diagnosis. This approach explores alternatives to prevailing cohort-based statistical paradigms, particularly in complex clinical cases that have resisted standard methods.
The mathematician Mikhail Gromov has said, “This area does not yet exist. It will have to be invented.” Mathematical Medicine represents one possible construction of such an area.
This field is focused on the development of an intermediate translation layer between cohort-based statistical models and individualized multi-omic diagnosis and clinical decision-making. Without this mathematical layer, the clinical adoption of multi-omic data- particularly for complex cases- has been limited. As a result, many complex, multi-system conditions remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for long periods, delaying effective treatment and, in some cases, allowing disease processes to worsen.

Anusha Kalbasi, MD

BioDr. Kalbasi is a physician-scientist at the Stanford Cancer Institute. In the clinic, Dr. Kalbasi is a radiation oncologist specializing in the treatment of patients with sarcoma and other solid tumors, with expertise in early phase clinical trials related to immunotherapy, cellular therapy, and radiation therapy.
The Kalbasi laboratory studies cancer immunology, with a focus on understanding—and re-engineering—the molecular conversations that immune cells have with one another and with cancer cells, especially through cytokines. By mapping how these signals are sent, received, and interpreted within immune cells and cancer cells, the lab aims to design next-generation immunotherapies that deliver the right messages at the right time—making cancer-fighting cells more potent, more persistent, and more precise. -

Agnieszka Kalinowski

BioI am a translational physician-scientist committed to understanding the pathophysiology of schizophrenia to identify disease-modifying therapeutic interventions. I examined the role of C4 protein activation in clinical samples from individuals with schizophrenia compared to controls, its relationship to C4 CNV and effect on blood brain barrier permeability using in vitro model systems. I contributed to identifying LINE-1 insertions in postmortem brain samples of individuals with schizophrenia and C4 copy number variation (CNV) in pediatric patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms. Since accumulating evidence points to the synapses as the locus of pathology in schizophrenia, I am focusing my current research effort to defining the underlying abnormality in synapses in schizophrenia using a combination of in vitro iPS based model systems and postmortem brain samples, and applying cutting-edge techniques like spatial transcriptomics and array tomography.

BioWhat is the mathematical structure of supergravity/string theory and its relation to cosmology?
Professor Kallosh works on the general structure of supergravity and string theory and their applications to cosmology. Her main interests are related to the models early universe inflation and dark energy in string theory. She develops string theory models explaining the origin of the universe and its current acceleration. With her collaborators, she has recently constructed de Sitter supergravity, which is most suitable for studies of inflation and dark energy and spontaneously broken supersymmetry.
She is analyzing possible consequences of the expected new data from current and future cosmological observations, including LiteBIRD satellite CMB data. These results may affect the relationship between superstring theory and supergravity, and the real world. Professor Kallosh works, in particular, on future tests of string theory by CMB data and effective supergravity models with flexible amplitude of gravitational waves produced during inflation. -

BioDr. Praveen Kalra is Board Certified in Anesthesia and in Critical Care. He specializes in trauma, orthopedic, brain and spine surgery, urology, and cancer surgery. He was appointed Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiology (FASA) in 2023. Appointed Medical Director of Sustainability for Stanford Healthcare in Dec 2023.
His professional interests include devising protocols for patient safety, informed consent, reducing the impact of anesthetics on the environment, addressing climate change by reducing green house gas emissions in the health care setting, resident education to emphasize evidence based safe care and mentoring medical students. He has been in practice for over 18 years.
Received the Inaugural Sustainability Ambassador Award in 2022 at SHC for removing Desflurane (anesthetic gas with highest global warming potential) from the OR and undertaking multiple initiatives such as creating a Green Team at SHC, an elective Green Rotation for residents, green curriculum video series and addressing plastic & biohazardous waste in the OR. Current projects are focused on decommissioning nitrous oxide pipelines in the OR. As Medical Director of Sustainability, I work on collaborating with experts, fostering clinician engagement in change management, and spearheading transformative initiatives.

BioDr. Neil M. Kalwani is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiologist with Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical instructor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. In addition, he serves as director of preventive cardiology at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Palo Alto Health Care System.
Dr. Kalwani specializes in general and preventive cardiology care. He has expertise in treating high cholesterol and other risk factors to prevent and stop the progression of coronary artery disease and other forms of atherosclerosis. He provides compassionate care centered around his patients' goals and prioritizes effective therapies based on the latest evidence to improve heart health and overall well-being.
Dr. Kalwani’s research focuses on innovations in care delivery designed to improve the value of care for people living with cardiovascular disease. He is especially interested in telemedicine and its impact on cardiology care, including on quality of care, practice patterns, and access. He has also investigated clinical decision support for cardiac testing, measurement of patient-reported outcomes for heart disease, and lipoprotein (a) testing patterns.
Dr. Kalwani has published his research in many peer-reviewed journals, including Circulation, the American Heart Journal, the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology, and the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare. He has also presented his research at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions. His presentations have covered topics ranging from telemedicine’s effect on care delivery to the impact of physician productivity assessment on medical center performance.

BioDr. Afrin Kamal Nahar (previously known as Dr. Kamal) is a Clinical Associate Professor of Gastroenterology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Her health services research interests focus on developing and testing communication tools to improve the patient-care provider experience. She has authored 50+ peer reviewed publications and is an NIH funded research. Dr. Rahman is a principal investigator for a K23 grant awarded by the NIDDK to develop and test a mobile health application tool for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Dr. Rahman is co-chair of the Young International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE) and serves on several committees as part of American College of Gastroenterology and American Foregut Society. She is also an associate editor for Diseases of the Esophagus and director of the Esophageal Virtual Collaborative, an on-line platform with a mission to discuss complex challenging cases in benign esophageal disease among colleagues cross-nation.

Seraphine Kamayirese
Postdoctoral Scholar, Bioengineering
BioI am a protein and peptide biochemist with a focus on biophysical characterization, structural activity relationship (SAR)study, and design and optimization of peptides targeting disease-relevant proteins. My Ph.D. research focused on designing and optimizing ligands that target the 14-3-3ε protein to disrupt its interaction with the cell cycle regulator CDC25A, an interaction known to suppress apoptosis in squamous cell carcinoma. Inhibiting this pathway is expected to promote apoptosis in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. At Stanford University, I am expanding my research to study antimicrobial peptidoids and peptides such as LL-37 and their interactions with amyloid beta peptides, and the potential application of the resulting complexes as antiviral therapeutics. I bring strong experience in rational peptide design, structural activity relationship studies, molecular dynamics simulations, peptides and peptoids synthesis and purification, protein expression, and biophysical assays. My research has led to multiple peer-reviewed publications, presentations at national and international conferences, and awards, including the Young Investigator Poster Award at the American Peptide Symposium.

Neil Kamdar

Biostatistician 3, Center for Population Health SciencesBioI am a health services researcher and applied methodologist focused on clinical and policy applications in disabilities research, women's health, general surgery, and mental health analyses. My focus has been on leveraging Medicare, private payer claims (Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI), MarketScan, OptumInsight, etc.) and Medicaid to understand cost, utilization, and outcomes. This work has been foundational in the development of large-scale studies on vulnerable populations that have typically been under-served or insufficiently studies in the health services research domain.
I serve as the Assistant Director of Analytics at the Center for Population Health Sciences at Stanford, focused on the development of the American Family Cohort (AFC) data, a primary care registry that provides substantial insights into clinical outcomes, utilization, and a particular focus on COVID-19 and Long COVID outcome analyses. Ancillary work would involve the development of research collaborations throughout Stanford Medicine with the interest in creating scholarship across the many domains of the Center for Population Health Sciences.
In addition to this role at Stanford, I also maintain an appointment at the University of Michigan, Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, where I serve as an analytic lead in the development of administrative claims and electronic medical records analyses leading to publications in general and subject-specific journals.
I have been successful in being funded as a co-investigator with several federal and foundation agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DOD), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Neilsen Foundation focused on traumatic spinal cord injury, among many others. I have also provided foundational analyses in the development of Clinical Quality Initiatives (CQIs), which are state-wide initiatives aimed at improving the health and efficiency of hospitals and institutions, with a focus on maternal and fetal medicine in the State of Michigan.
