Lucia Rivera Lara, MD, MPH
Clinical Professor, Adult Neurology
BioDr. Rivera Lara is a Clinical Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she is highly regarded for her clinical excellence and dedication to education and research in the field of neurology. She treats patients suffering from strokes, cerebral hemorrhages, and seizures. Dr. Rivera Lara completed her residency in Neurology at the University of Massachusetts and her fellowship in Neurocritical Care at Johns Hopkins University. During her fellowship, she received a Research Award from the American Academy of Neurology/American Brain Foundation.
Dr. Rivera Lara joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in 2014, initially as an Instructor and later as an Assistant Professor, working in the neurocritical care unit and the Neurology inpatient and consult service. She earned her Master’s in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2017, which equipped her with a broader perspective on research and global health.
Today, her research is at the forefront of addressing critical issues in neurology. Dr. Rivera Lara focuses on developing neuromonitoring algorithms aimed at optimizing cerebral blood flow delivery for patients with acute brain injuries, with the goal of preventing cerebral ischemia and subsequent complications. By studying cerebral autoregulation and employing multimodal brain monitoring techniques, she aims to mitigate secondary injuries, ultimately helping to reduce cognitive impairment and decrease disability in these vulnerable patients. Her findings have been published in journals including Critical Care Medicine, Neurocritical Care, Stroke, Seizure, the Journal of Neurosurgery and Anesthesiology, and JAMA, and she has presented at the International Stroke Conference, the Critical Care Conference, and at meetings of the American Academy of Neurology and the Neurocritical Care Society.
Dr. Rivera Lara is a Global Health Faculty Fellow at Stanford University for her work on neurological health disparities in Latin America. She founded "Conferencias de Cuidado Neurocritico," which are bimonthly lectures on Neurocritical Care Emergencies and Stroke Management conducted in Spanish via Zoom, attended by residents, fellows, and intensivists from Latin American countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, and others. -

Rafael Rivera Lugo
Postdoctoral Scholar, Biology
BioRafael Rivera-Lugo is a Stanford Science Fellow postdoctoral associate in the Department of Biology and the ChEM-H Institute at Stanford University, where he works in the laboratory of Christine Jacobs-Wagner. His postdoctoral research focuses on how the Lyme disease bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi establishes infection using novel mouse models to dissect the immune and cellular mechanisms that drive tissue pathology during infection. He is also developing metabolically active, non-replicating bacterial platforms for vaccine applications.
Rafael completed his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, in the laboratory of Daniel A. Portnoy. His doctoral work revealed how the intracellular pathogen Listeria monocytogenes acquires and utilizes flavins (riboflavin derivatives) during infection, reshaping our understanding of bacterial metabolism and immune evasion. This work produced multiple high-impact publications in journals including PNAS, eLife, Nature, and mBio, and was recognized with the Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award and the Nicholas Cozzarelli Prize. He received his B.S. in Biology and Biotechnology, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Puerto Rico at Ponce.
Beyond research, Rafael is deeply committed to expanding access to scientific careers. He has mentored students from historically underserved communities through programs at Stanford and UC Berkeley, co-founded organizations to support peers navigating academic science, and has been a consistent advocate for creating welcoming and rigorous scientific environments for all students. -

Aileen Robinson
Assistant Professor of Theater and Performance Studies
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAileen K. Robinson is a historian of performance and technology with specializations in 18th and 19th century British theatre and Black cultural performances. Working across the history of science, technology, and theatre, Robinson explores how systems of knowledge, connected to the body and the object, overlapped to produce practices of research, dissemination, and valuation.
Robinson's current book manuscript explores intersections between technological, scientific, and theatrical knowledge in early nineteenth-century science museums. She investigates how theatrical performances and magic shows drew upon technological innovations and formed unique methods for disseminating scientific knowledge. She teaches across the history of science and performance, magic and technology, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century stagecraft, and 19th and 20th-century Black artistic production. -
Burke E. Robinson
Affiliate, Business & Finance
BioBurke Robinson has retired after 27 years as a lecturer and consulting professor at Stanford. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the Sustainability Science & Practice Program and the Management Science & Engineering Dept. His premiere course was The Art and Science of Decision Making.
When we make high-quality decisions, we improve the probability of outcomes we want. By combining the art of qualitative framing and structuring with the science of quantitative assessment and analysis, we will have pragmatic ways to: identify those core issues driving the value of our decisions, craft an inspirational vision, create viable alternatives, mitigate biases in probabilistic information, clarify both tangible and intangible preferences, develop appropriate risk/reward models, evaluate decisions for a broad range of uncertain scenarios, appraise values of gathering additional information, and ensure commitment to implementation plans and budgets.
Common-sense rules and decision-making tools provide the essential focus, discipline, and passion we need for clarity of action on big, important decisions – from personal choices to organizational decisions about business strategies or public policies. A normative approach prescribes how decisions can be made defensible using a logical basis of deliberative reasoning when we face a dynamic, complex, and uncertain future world. Transformational change can then implement the optimal decisions by following a dynamic process of project management.
Students in his courses had the opportunity to frame, structure, assess, and analyze their personal career and lifestyle decisions for the initial 5 years after leaving Stanford. Key factors often include net discretionary income, savings and investments, macroeconomic trends, job satisfaction, personal life satisfaction, avocation pursuits, and relationships with family and friends.
Burke remains an avid Stanford sports fan and supporter of the many scholar-athletes on campus. As a Decision Coach, he advises and mentors students and others as they make significant life decisions about undergraduate majors, graduate programs, internships, career jobs, entrepreneurial ventures, and professional sports opportunities.
