BioI did my undergraduate work at Amherst and went on to graduate school at Princeton. Since then I've taught at Harvard, UCLA, The University of Pennsylvania, The University of Michigan, Berkeley, and Stanford. I resumed my graduate career a little while back -- from a distance, as it were -- receiving the PhD in 2005.
I'm married to another philosopher, Krista Lawlor.
My interests continue to center in aesthetics, but they have spilled over into pretty much every branch of philosophy at one time or another.
Wittgenstein, Culture and Value, 34: Im Rennen der Philosophie gewinnt, wer am langsamsten laufen kann. Oder: der, der das Ziel zuletzt erreicht. (In philosophy the race is to the one who can run slowest — the one who crosses the finish line last.) I'm not sure I believe this, but it's a comforting thing to read. -

My research focuses on building generalizable molecular tools to better measure and manipulate complex human disease. At Stanford, I am developing modular antibody platforms that enable high-resolution, spatial analysis of cancer and immune systems in intact tissue. I previously trained at Oxford and Cambridge, where I worked on next-generation vaccine platforms with collaborators across academia and industry.

David Ian Hindin
Clinical Assistant Professor, Surgery - General Surgery
BioDr. Hindin obtained his MD from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his general surgery training at Temple University School of Medicine, also in Philadelphia, and subsequently completed fellowship in surgical critical care at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Hindin is currently the Associate Chair of Innovation at Stanford University’s Department of Surgery. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Stanford University in the section of Trauma and Critical Care Surgery and at the VA Palo Alto. Dr. Hindin additionally serves as Associate Director of Stanford University’s Biodesign Faculty Fellowship, a university-wide program that trains faculty members from medicine, engineering, and other schools in the process of creating health technology innovation, from needs-finding to commercialization.
Dr. Hindin has a particular interest in training physicians to leverage story-based skills to increase the effectiveness of their communication. He has previously developed and taught a semester-long storytelling course at Stanford Biodesign, which trains physicians and engineers to create more effective pitches when seeking venture funding. -
Pamela Hinds

BioPamela J. Hinds is Rodney H. Adams Professor in the School of Engineering, Professor of Management Science & Engineering, Co-Director of the Center on Work, Technology, and Organization, and on the Director's Council for the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. She studies the effect of technology on teams, collaboration, and innovation. Pamela has conducted extensive research on the dynamics of cross-boundary work teams, particularly those spanning national borders. She explores issues of culture, language, identity, conflict, and the role of site visits in promoting knowledge sharing and collaboration. She has published extensively on the relationship between national culture and work practices, particularly exploring how work practices or technologies created in one location are understood and employed at distant sites. Pamela also has a body of research on human-robot interaction in the work environment and the dynamics of human-robot teams. Most recently, Pamela has been looking at the changing nature of work in the face of emerging technologies, including the nature of coordination in open innovation, changes in work and organizing resulting from 3D-printing, and the work of data analysts. Her research has appeared in journals such as Organization Science, Research in Organizational Behavior, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Discoveries, Human-Computer Interaction, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Pamela is a Senior Editor of Organization Science. She is also co-editor with Sara Kiesler of the book Distributed Work (MIT Press). Pamela holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Science and Management from Carnegie Mellon University.

Michael Hines

On Leave from 10/01/2025 To 06/30/2026BioMichael Hines is a historian of American education whose work concentrates on the educational activism of Black teachers, students, and communities during the Progressive Era (1890s-1940s). He is an Assistant Professor of Education, and an affiliated faculty member with the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity and the Bill Lane Center for the American West. He is the author of A Worthy Piece of Work (Beacon Press, 2022) which details how African Americans educator activists in the early twentieth century created new curricular discourses around race and historical representation. Dr. Hines has published six peer reviewed articles and book chapters in outlets including the Journal of African American History, History of Education Quarterly, Review of Educational Research, and the Journal of the History Childhood and Youth. He has also written for popular outlets including the Washington Post, Time magazine, and Chalkbeat. He teaches courses including History of Education in the U.S., and Education for Liberation: A History of African American Education, 1800-The Present.

Stephen M. Hinshaw
Assistant Professor (Research) of Molecular and Cellular Physiology
BioStephen Hinshaw is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology and the Faculty co-Director of the Stanford Cryo-Electron Microscopy Center (cEMc). His laboratory develops and applies cutting-edge tools in chemical and structural biology to uncover fundamental cellular mechanisms and translate these insights into powerful new pharmacological strategies.
Stephen received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and earned his Ph.D. from the Harvard Program in Genetics and Genomics, where he discovered fundamental mechanisms governing chromosome segregation during mitosis. He then conducted postdoctoral research as a Helen Hay Whitney Fellow supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Harvard Medical School, with additional training as a visiting postdoctoral fellow at the Janelia Research Campus. During this period, he used cryo-electron microscopy to determine the structures of protein complexes that underlie genetic inheritance in normal and cancer cells. Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, Stephen led discovery efforts for new therapeutic modalities as a Senior Research Scientist in the Center for Therapeutics Discovery and at the Stanford Cancer Institute. -
Andrea Hinton, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Dermatology
BioDr. Hinton is a board-certified dermatologist who provides care at Stanford Health Care Dermatology Clinics in Castro Valley, Livermore, and Redwood City. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Hinton diagnoses and treats a wide range of general dermatologic skin conditions, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancer. She also performs dermatologic surgery. She has a particular interest in hair loss (alopecia) and restoration, including the treatment of scarring, non-scarring, and chemotherapy-induced alopecia across all hair textures.
Dr. Hinton’s research interests include side effects of cancer (oncologic) treatment that impact the skin (cutaneous side effects), including chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Her other research interests include digital health and patient access. Prior to starting her medical training, she researched state public insurance models and health disparities.
Dr. Hinton has published her research in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice and JAMA Dermatology. She has also published her work in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and British Journal of Dermatology. Dr. Hinton has presented to her peers at national and regional meetings, including the New England Dermatological Society Clinical Meeting. -
Stephen Hinton

BioStephen Hinton is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Music at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in German. His research focuses on aesthetics, the history of music theory, and the music of Kurt Weill, Paul Hindemith, and Beethoven.
He has held several leadership roles at Stanford, including Denning Family Director of the Stanford Arts Institute (2011–2015), Senior Associate Dean for Humanities & Arts (2006–2010), and multiple terms as Chair of the Department of Music. Before coming to Stanford, he taught at Yale University and the Technische Universität Berlin.
Hinton is the author of Weill’s Musical Theater: Stages of Reform (winner of the 2013 Kurt Weill Prize), as well as numerous books, articles, and critical editions, including Kurt Weill: The Threepenny Opera in the Cambridge Opera Handbooks series. His work has appeared in major reference works and handbooks, and he has edited Beethoven Forum as well as volumes in the collected editions of both Weill and Hindemith.
His recent projects include a revised German edition of his Weill monograph (Kurt Weills Musiktheater: Vom Songspiel zur American Opera, Suhrkamp 2023) and the online edX courses on Haydn and Beethoven for the series Defining the String Quartet, created with the St. Lawrence String Quartet. -

Kent Hippler

BioKent Hippler is a PhD student in the Decision and Risk Analysis (DARA) Group in Stanford's Department of Management Science and Engineering, advised by Dr. Elisabeth Paté-Cornell. His current research focuses on risk attitudes in AI Decision Support Systems.
Prior to pursuing his PhD, Kent served as a Nuclear Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy, supporting three western Pacific deployments aboard the USS Anchorage and USS Theodore Roosevelt. He later worked as a Systems Engineer at Maxar Technologies and a Software Engineer at Amazon. Kent holds a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering, summa cum laude, from the University of Florida (2016) and an M.S. in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford (2025), where he worked with the Language Data and Reasoning Lab under the advisement of Dr. Amin Saberi. -
Kelsey Hirotsu, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Dermatology
BioDr. Kelsey Hirotsu is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed her fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery & Dermatologic Oncology at the University of California San Diego. During fellowship she received additional training in cosmetic dermatology and laser procedures. She completed her dermatology residency at Stanford after graduating from Stanford University School of Medicine with a scholarly concentration in bioengineering. Dr. Hirotsu earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Hirotsu has presented at national and international dermatology conferences. She is a regularly invited reviewer for peer-reviewed journals and has authored numerous publications in top dermatology journals. -
Julia Hirsch

Master of Arts Student in Religious Studies, admitted Autumn 2025BioJulia Hirsch is a Ph.D. student in the Religious Studies Department at Stanford University, where she focuses on Indo-Tibetan Buddhism. She holds a B.A. from Boston College in Philosophy with minors in Psychoanalytics and Women’s & Gender Studies (2015). She received her M.A. in the History of Art and Archaeology: Religious Arts of Asia from SOAS University of London (2020).
Julia’s current research explores Buddhist material religion and visual culture, power objects, and ritual from an art-historical perspective. Of particular interest are relic cults, funerary rites, and the importance—and soteriological potential—of sensory encounter in South Asian and Himalayan traditions.
Prior to joining Stanford, Julia worked for several years at Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, where she continues to serve as a contributing editor covering Buddhist art, film, and publishing. -
Karen G. Hirsch, MD
Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences (Adult Neurology)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Karen G. Hirsch cares for critically ill patients with neurologic disorders in the intensive care unit. Dr. Hirsch's research focuses on using continuous and discrete multi-modal data to develop phenotypes and identify signatures of treatment responsiveness in patients with coma after cardiac arrest. She is the Co-PI of PRECICECAP (PRecision Care In Cardiac ArrEst - ICECAP, NINDS R01 NS119825-01). The research team works closely with collaborators in data science at Stanford and with industry partners to apply machine learning analyses to complex multi-modal ICU data. Dr. Hirsch also studies neuro-imaging in post-cardiac arrest coma and traumatic brain injury, and with colleagues in Cardiac Anesthesia and Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. Hirsch studies neurologic outcomes in patients on mechanical circulatory support including ECMO.
Along with colleagues in Biomedical Ethics, Dr. Hirsch studies brain death, organ donation, and neuroethics. She is the Co-PI of BCI-DEF (Brain Computer Interfaces and Disability: Developing an Inclusive Ethical Framework, NIMH 1R01MH130518-01) which is a BRAIN Initiative funded study that is qualitatively evaluating end user perspectives about the benefits, risks, and ethical challenges of Brain Computer Interfaces for patients with acute stroke or traumatic brain injury.
Dr. Hirsch is broadly interested in improving neurologic outcomes after acute severe brain injury, identifying early phenotypes to guide precision medicine in neurocritical care, and exploring ethical issues in neurocritical care and novel neurotechnology. Dr. Hirsch greatly appreciates the importance of team science and collaboration. -
Mark Hlatky, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy main research work is in "outcomes research", especially examining the field of cardiovascular medicine. Particular areas of interest are the integration of economic and quality of life data into randomized clinical trials, evidence-based medicine, decision models, and cost-effectiveness analysis. I am also interested in the application of novel genetic, biomarker, and imaging tests to assess risk and guide clinical management of coronary artery disease.
