Julia Fridman Simard

BioJulia Fridman Simard, ScD, is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology & Population Health, and of Medicine in Immunology and Rheumatology and Obstetrics and, by courtesy, Gynecology in Maternal Fetal Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Simard earned her Masters and Doctorate of Science in Epidemiology degrees at the Harvard School of Public Health. During that time she trained with investigators at the Section of Clinical Sciences, Division of Rheumatology, Immunology, and Allergy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Unit at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. In 2008, Dr. Simard relocated to Sweden to begin a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. She became an Assistant Professor in their Clinical Epidemiology Unit in 2011, and was later honored with a Karolinska Institute Teaching Award. Leveraging the population-based registers of Sweden, Dr. Simard initiated a national register linkage study to examine the utility of registers in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) research and develop an extensive data repository for future epidemiologic investigations.
While maintaining a close collaboration with the Karolinska Institute, she joined Stanford’s faculty in 2013. Dr. Simard's work includes outcomes such as malignancy, stroke, infection, and mortality, in patients with systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases with a focus on systemic lupus erythematosus. She has made significant contributions at the intersection of reproductive epidemiology and rheumatic disease fueled initially by a K01 career development award from the NIH (NIAMS) to study maternal and fetal outcomes in systemic lupus pregnancy. This led to collaborations with colleagues at Stanford, throughout the US, and abroad, and a series of projects focused on the diagnosis of preeclampsia and associated risks in pregnant women with systemic lupus. With support from the Preeclampsia Foundation for her lab's work examining preeclampsia risk in high-risk populations, and a McCormick Faculty Award from Stanford Medicine, Dr. Simard is taking important steps towards understanding this significant pregnancy complication in pregnancies complicated by rheumatologic disease. Dr. Simard is leading an international study of hydroxychloroquine in lupus pregnancy leveraging mixed methods in partnership with qualitative researchers, patients, clinicians, and epidemiologists in Sweden, Canada, and in the United States, and is expanding to other medications and rheumatic autoimmune diagnoses.
Additionally, Dr. Simard's lab is also interested in how misclassification, missed opportunities, and misdiagnosis contribute to disparities in complex conditions. In addition to methodologic issues around misclassification and bias and the largely clinical epidemiology focus of her work, Dr. Simard's work examines social determinants of health and health disparities. With support from an R01 from NIH (NIAID), her lab is also studying the role of cognitive errors in clinical decision making for female-predominant diseases. This work evaluates this bias in multiple clinical specialties, including rheumatology, neurology, and primary care, and uses mixed methods including randomized survey-based studies and qualitative interviews. -

My work in industry (Chevron, SpaceX, Benchmark, Boeing) and academia catalyzed my interest in advancing sustainable, safe propulsion and energy systems. As a Stanford PhD candidate in the Hypersonics, Propulsion, and Energy Laboratory (HyPEL) working under Professor Ronald Hanson, I employ fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and chemical kinetics to experimentally probe combustion behavior. -

Jon Simon
Joan Reinhart Professor and Professor of Applied Physics
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsJon's group focuses on exploring synthetic quantum matter using the unique tools available through quantum and classical optics. We typically think of photons as non-interacting, wave-like particles. By harnessing recent innovations in Rydberg-cavity- and circuit- quantum electrodynamics, the Simonlab is able to make photons interact strongly with one another, mimicking collisions between charged electrons. By confining these photons in ultra-low-loss metamaterial structures, the teams "teach" the photons to behave as though they have mass, are in traps, and are experiencing magnetic fields, all by using the structures to tailor the optical dispersion. In total, this provides a unique platform to explore everything from Weyl-semi-metals, to fractional quantum hall puddles, to Mott insulators and quantum dots, all made of light.
The new tools developed in this endeavor, from twisted fabry-perot resonators, to Rydberg atom ensembles, Floquet-modulated atoms, and coupled cavity optical mode converters, have broad applications in information processing and communication. Indeed, we are now commissioning a new experiment aimed at interconverting optical and mm-wave photons using Rydberg atoms inside of crossed optical and superconducting millimeter resonators as the transducer. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and a clinical psychologist who evaluates and treats youth presenting with chronic pain in the Pediatric Pain Management Clinic (PPMC) at Stanford Children’s Health. My program of research aims to utilize a pain neuroscience psychology approach to gain a mechanistic understanding of cognitive and affective processes in pediatric pain, perform rigorous patient-oriented research that translates targeted assessment into mechanistically informed treatment approaches for optimal clinical care and leverage the ubiquity of digital health to enhance patient access and reach. Central to these goals are projects targeting adolescence and youth adults with chronic pain that encompass defining brain signatures of threat interpretation, evaluating the efficacy of graded exposure (NCT03699007), deriving a biosignature of improvement vs. persistence of pain and disability (NCT04285112), and evaluating the impact of virtual reality on pain rehabilitation (NCT04636177). These studies along with additional work examining the journey of pain care for youth with pain and their parents form a comprehensive research portfolio in the realm of understanding and treating chronic pain in young people. My long-term career goal is to lead a robust research program focusing on alleviating the suffering of youth and emerging adults with chronic pain.

Our aim is to develop innovative structural systems that improve structural performance and reduce the effects of natural hazards on the built environment.

Marcus Sinewe

BioMarcus Sinewe is the Stanford EM Simulation Fellow. He is a board-certified Emergency Medicine Physician who received his training at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. His background prior to Stanford includes active duty military service in the United States Air Force as a practicing physician. During that time, he practiced in Virginia, Ohio, Alaska, and Minnesota on a variety of taskings and missions. He also deployed and was recognized as a clinician for his work on Ground Surgical Teams (GST) in austere trauma care. From this recognition, he served for two years as an Emergency Medicine Instructor for the GST Austere Course at the School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) in Dayton, Ohio. He is an expert in medical simulation, debriefing, team dynamics and cross specialty training. Among his other passions include patient-centered care and social emergency medicine.

Benjamin Singer

BioBen Singer is a postdoctoral scholar with interests in mathematical epidemiology and global public health. Ben's research career began with an internship at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, where he applied quantitative skills he had learnt studying physics at the University of Oxford to the study of nematode locomotion. Ben further pursued quantitative methods in life sciences in the Interdisciplinary Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership at the University of Oxford, earning a DPhil (PhD equivalent) in mathematical methods for evaluating pandemic risk and control. During these studies he maintained an interest in global public health policy, interning with the UK government's Department for International Development, where he developed models of international COVID-19 vaccine distribution. Ben is now working in Nathan Lo's research group at Stanford, creating infectious disease models informing public health policy for schistosomiasis, hepatitis E, and other infections.

Armandeep Singh

BioArmandeep Singh is a rising senior at the University of Toronto, pursuing a double major in Human Biology and Biochemistry, and aspires to become a physician. Originally from Punjab, India, he is passionate about medicine, education, mentorship, and helping others feel supported and capable. As a Scholar in Stanford’s Storytelling and Medicine Program’s Class of 2026, he is exploring the role of storytelling in medicine. His interest in storytelling comes from his own life experiences and from the people he has met through teaching, research, and community service. His participation in Yale’s Foundations of Bioethics program deepened his interest in clinical ethics, public health, and the human side of healthcare. His research interests include cardiovascular health in South Asian communities and the use of immersive virtual reality to make complex scientific concepts more accessible and engaging. Armandeep’s interest in medicine was also shaped by his father’s illness and recovery, which showed him the difference a compassionate physician can make in a family’s life. He hopes to become a physician who sees patients and their families as whole people shaped by their stories, circumstances, and lived experiences.

He is also an affiliated Clinical Assistant Professor of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University. He completed his undergraduate studies in molecular and cellular biology at UC Berkeley, where he also completed a Master of Public Health (MPH). He received his medical degree from UC San Francisco. He completed residency training in internal medicine, followed by pulmonary and critical care fellowship as well as sleep medicine fellowship all at Stanford University. Dr. Singh chaired the annual California Thoracic Society (CTS) conference for three years, and he is currently serving on the executive committee. His clinical, research, and academic interests include chronic obstructive airways disease (COPD), chronic respiratory failure, and non-invasive ventilation.

Masters Student in Electrical Engineering, admitted Spring 2025BioI am a third-year electrical engineering PhD student and NSF Graduate Research Fellow in the Stanford Translational AI Lab (STAI), advised by Dr. Ehsan Adeli. I am broadly interested in applied ML, and am currently working on foundation models for functional MRI to better understanding aging and brain network interactions.
Previously, I was a post-baccalaureate researcher here at Stanford, where I applied machine learning to transcranial ultrasound neuromodulation, a non-invasive therapeutic modality with the potential to cure neurological diseases such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's, and even addiction. My primary focus during this time was using ML to improve therapy planning accuracy and efficiency. You can view more of my research on my website!
