Bruce Cain

BioBruce E. Cain is a Professor of Political Science at Stanford University and Director of the Bill Lane Center for the American West. He received a BA from Bowdoin College (1970), a B Phil. from Oxford University (1972) as a Rhodes Scholar, and a Ph D from Harvard University (1976). He taught at Caltech (1976-89) and UC Berkeley (1989-2012) before coming to Stanford. Professor Cain was Director of the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley from 1990-2007 and Executive Director of the UC Washington Center from 2005-2012. He was elected the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000 and has won awards for his research (Richard F. Fenno Prize, 1988), teaching (Caltech 1988 and UC Berkeley 2003) and public service (Zale Award for Outstanding Achievement in Policy Research and Public Service, 2000). His areas of expertise include political regulation, applied democratic theory, representation and state politics. Some of Professor Cain’s most recent publications include “Malleable Constitutions: Reflections on State Constitutional Design,” coauthored with Roger Noll in University of Texas Law Review, volume 2, 2009; “More or Less: Searching for Regulatory Balance,” in Race, Reform and the Political Process, edited by Heather Gerken, Guy Charles and Michael Kang, CUP, 2011; “Redistricting Commissions: A Better Political Buffer?” in The Yale Law Journal, volume 121, 2012; and Democracy More or Less (CUP, 2015). He is currently working on problems of environmental governance.

Miray Cakiroglu

BioMy research revolves around the constitutive role of ruins, as a specific genre of objects, in the spatial organization of politics at multiple scales and in a historical continuum. As the constructed cultural progenitor of western Europe, the Mediterranean region occupies a special place in discussions of heritage with its extensive ruin landscapes. The search for the material remains of antiquity motivated much of travel eastward, shaping the archaeological imaginary in the discipline’s early days. I focus on the shifting trajectory of the meaning of ruins as they move from one context to another. I am specifically interested in the imperial encounters of the 19th century on what is now the Turkish Aegean and the afterlives of ruins in new sociopolitical frameworks. I am also interested in the territorial imagination of homelands and borderlands in relation to politics of death, dying, and martyrdom.
I received my B.A. in English Literature with a double major in Philosophy from Bogazici University. I completed an M.A. in Cultural Studies at the same university with a thesis on the formulation of urban space and urban citizen in the coursebooks of “Istanbul courses.” I hold another M.A. in Near Eastern Studies from New York University, where I focused on the mobility of a Seljuk sultan’s tomb in Syria, presently a Turkish territory outside national borders, in its relation to nationalism and place-making. I have two poetry books published in Turkish, one of which is the recipient of the prestigious Yasar Nabi Nayir Youth Award. -
Hector Miguel Callejas

BioDr. Hector M. Callejas is an IDEAL Provostial Fellow and Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University. He researches and teaches on political anthropology; Latin American and Latinx studies; Native American and Indigenous studies; comparative ethnic studies; cultural studies; critical theory; and the Americas. His research investigates how the politics of race, ethnicity, and Indigeneity in contemporary society intersect with colonialism, capitalism, nation, the state, and governance. He focuses on social movements. His current project analyzes dispossession, human rights, and cultural heritage in Latin America. His next project will explore sovereignty, migration, and the environment in the United States. He uncovers how, why, and to what effects marginalized peoples become the subjects of political discourses in their everyday lives.

Daniele Caratelli

BioDaniele Caratelli completed a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and economics from the University of Chicago in 2015. From 2015 to 2017 he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as a research analyst in the Macroeconomic and Monetary Studies division of the Research group, where he concentrated on nowcasting macroeconomic data and time series econometrics. He is interested in monetary economics, time series econometrics and search and matching theory.

David Cardinal

BioDavid is a Lecturer at Stanford University, co-teaching Psychology 221, Image Systems Engineering and Psychology 204A, .Human Neuroimaging Methods. He is also a co-contributor to Stanford's ISET imaging toolbox, leading the effort to extend it in areas including machine learning and computational photography.
David has held various development and management positions at Sun Microsystems, including directing their efforts in AI and digital imaging. He was also the founding CEO and CTO of First Floor Software, which later became Calico Commerce.
Complementing his teaching role, David is a also a technologist, tech journalist and professional photographer two decades of experience as a digital travel and nature photographer. David co-wrote one of the first image management solutions for digital photographers -- DigitalPro for Windows. His articles have appeared in dozens of magazines including many in PCMag, Dr. Dobbs, Photoshop User, and Outdoor Photographer. His photo awards include First Place in the National Wildlife Federation contest, and Finalist in the BBC / NHM Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
David holds a BSE in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, where he received the Joseph Clifton Elgin award.

Laura L. Carstensen

On Partial Leave from 01/01/2023 To 03/31/2023BioLaura L. Carstensen is Professor of Psychology at Stanford University where she is the Fairleigh S. Dickinson Jr. Professor in Public Policy and founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity. For more than twenty-five years her research has been supported by the National Institute on Aging and during that period she was honored with two MERIT awards. Her most current empirical research focuses on ways in which motivational changes influence cognitive processing. Dr. Carstensen is a fellow in the Association for Psychological Science, the American Psychological Association and the Gerontological Society of America. She was a member of the MacArthur Foundation’s Research Network on an Aging Society and served on the National Advisory Council on Aging to National Institute on Aging. Carstensen has won numerous awards, including the Kleemeier Award, The Richard Kalish Award for Innovative Research and the Distinguished Mentorship Award from the Gerontological Society of America, as well as the Master Mentor Award from the American Psychological Association. She was selected as a Guggenheim Fellow in 2003 and in 2016 was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine. In 2011, she authored A Long Bright Future: Happiness, Health, and Financial Security in an Age of Increased Longevity. Carstensen received her B.S. from the University of Rochester and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from West Virginia University. She holds an honorary doctorate from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.

David Cheriton

BioCheriton's research includes the areas of high-performance distributed systems, and high-speed computer communication with a particular interest in protocol design. He leads the Distributed Systems Group in the TRIAD project, focused on understanding and solving problems with the Internet architecture. He has also been teaching and writing about object-oriented programming, building on his experience with OOP in systems building.

Angele Christin

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAngèle Christin studies how algorithms and analytics transform professional values, expertise, and work practices.
Her book, Metrics at Work: Journalism and the Contested Meaning of Algorithms (Princeton University Press, 2020) focuses on the case of web journalism, analyzing the growing importance of audience data in web newsrooms in the U.S. and France. Drawing on ethnographic methods, Angèle shows how American and French journalists make sense of traffic numbers in different ways, which in turn has distinct effects on the production of news in the two countries. She discussed it on the New Books Network podcast.
In a related study, she analyzed the construction, institutionalization, and reception of predictive algorithms in the U.S. criminal justice system, building on her previous work on the determinants of criminal sentencing in French courts.
Her new project examines the paradoxes of algorithmic labor through a study of influencers and influencer marketing on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. -

I am currently working on joint projects with Stripe.com, I am associated with the Labor Economics group at the LSE Centre for Economic Performance and a Research Scholar in the Income, Work, and Welfare sector at the UK Institute for Fiscal Studies.
Prior to joining Stanford, I completed an MPhil in Economics (with Distinction) from the University of Oxford, where I was a joint Clarendon-Nuffield College Corden scholar and a BA in Economics from the University of Manchester, where I graduated as the top student in the Faculty of Humanities.

On Leave from 09/01/2022 To 06/30/2023Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMuch of my research examines processes related to identity maintenance and their implications for social problems. One primary aim of my research is the development of theory-driven, rigorously tested intervention strategies that further our understanding of the processes underpinning social problems and that offer solutions to alleviate them. Two key questions lie at the core of my research: “Given that a problem exists, what are its underlying processes?” And, “Once identified, how can these processes be overcome?” One reason for this interest in intervention is my belief that a useful way to understand psychological processes and social systems is to try to change them. We also are interested in how and when seemingly brief interventions, attuned to underlying psychological processes, produce large and long-lasting psychological and behavioral change.
The methods that my lab uses include laboratory experiments, longitudinal studies, content analyses, and randomized field experiments. One specific area of research addresses the effects of group identity on achievement, with a focus on under-performance and racial and gender achievement gaps. Additional research programs address hiring discrimination, the psychology of closed-mindedness and inter-group conflict, and psychological processes underlying anti-social and health-risk behavior.
