Hector Miguel Callejas

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsHector is an interdisciplinary scholar of colonialism, Indigeneity, and the environment, with a focus on social movements in the Americas. He uses ethnography, archival research, and theory to examine the production and governance of Indigenous identities and environments, and their intersections with colonial power relations, in modern societies. His community-engaged research covers ethnic studies, anthropology, environmental studies, and area studies.

David Cardinal

BioDavid is a Lecturer at Stanford University, co-teaching Psychology 221, Image Systems Engineering and Psychology 204A, .Human Neuroimaging Methods. He is also a co-contributor to Stanford's ISET imaging toolbox, leading the effort to extend it in areas including machine learning and computational photography.
David has held various development and management positions at Sun Microsystems, including directing their efforts in AI and digital imaging. He was also the founding CEO and CTO of First Floor Software, which later became Calico Commerce.
Complementing his teaching role, David is a also a technologist, tech journalist and professional photographer two decades of experience as a digital travel and nature photographer. David co-wrote one of the first image management solutions for digital photographers -- DigitalPro for Windows. His articles have appeared in dozens of magazines including many in PCMag, Dr. Dobbs, Photoshop User, and Outdoor Photographer. His photo awards include First Place in the National Wildlife Federation contest, and Finalist in the BBC / NHM Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
David holds a BSE in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University, where he received the Joseph Clifton Elgin award.

David Carson

BioDavid Carson is a John S. Knight (JSK) Journalism Fellow for the 2024-2025 academic year. He's interested in examining the impacts of AI-generated images on photojournalism and what can be done to build public trust in news photos. He is on leave from his position as a staff photojournalist at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch where he has worked for more than two decades. During his career, he's covered the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, two World Series, a Superbowl, U.S. Presidential and Vice Presidential debates and 9/11 on the ground in New York City during the early hours and days that followed the attacks.
Carson's work was featured extensively in the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography, awarded to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch photo staff "For powerful images of the despair and anger in Ferguson, MO, stunning photojournalism that served the community while informing the country." He also was a member of the newspaper’s staff that was a 2009 Pulitzer Prize finalist for its coverage of a mass-shooting during a Kirkwood, Mo. city council meeting.
Previously Carson worked at the Naples Daily News in Florida, The Providence Journal-Bulletin in Rhode Island, and as a freelance photographer in New England where he worked for The New York Times, USA Today and the Associated Press, among others. He's is also an avid Boston sports fan and still enjoys playing soccer.

Laura L. Carstensen

BioLaura L. Carstensen is Professor of Psychology at Stanford University where she is the Fairleigh S. Dickinson Jr. Professor in Public Policy and founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity. Her research on the theoretical and empirical study of motivational, cognitive, and emotional aspects of aging has been funded continuously by the National Institute on Aging for more than 30 years. Carstensen is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She served on the MacArthur Foundation’s Research Network on an Aging Society and was a commissioner on the Global Roadmap for Healthy Longevity. Carstensen’s awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Kleemeier Award, The Richard Kalish Award for Innovative Research and distinguished mentor awards from both the Gerontological Society of America and the American Psychological Association. She is the author of A Long Bright Future: Happiness, Health, and Financial Security in an Age of Increased Longevity. Carstensen received her B.S. from the University of Rochester and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from West Virginia University. She holds honorary doctorates from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the University of Rochester.

BioYunwei Chen is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University, affiliated with the Stanford Center on China's Economy and Institutions and the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health.
Her academic training is in global health economics. Prior to joining Stanford, she earned a PhD in Health Policy and Management (Economics Track) from the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2024.
Her research explores innovative solutions for effective delivery of public health interventions in resource-limited settings with rigorous experimental and quasi-experimental designs. Her current research agenda is centered on integrating digital health technologies to develop comprehensive and tailored interventions for children and mothers living in resource-limited settings during crucial developmental stages, aiming for both effectiveness and scalability. -

Angele Christin

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAngèle Christin studies how algorithms and analytics transform professional values, expertise, and work practices.
Her book, Metrics at Work: Journalism and the Contested Meaning of Algorithms (Princeton University Press, 2020) focuses on the case of web journalism, analyzing the growing importance of audience data in web newsrooms in the U.S. and France. Drawing on ethnographic methods, Angèle shows how American and French journalists make sense of traffic numbers in different ways, which in turn has distinct effects on the production of news in the two countries. She discussed it on the New Books Network podcast.
In a related study, she analyzed the construction, institutionalization, and reception of predictive algorithms in the U.S. criminal justice system, building on her previous work on the determinants of criminal sentencing in French courts.
Her new project examines the paradoxes of algorithmic labor through a study of influencers and influencer marketing on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. -

His focuses include cognitive and social processes in language use; interactive processes in conversation, from low-level disfluencies through acts of speaking and understanding to the emergence of discourse; and word meaning and word use. Clark is known for his theory of "common ground": individuals engaged in conversation must share knowledge in order to be understood and have a meaningful conversation (Clark, 1985). Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMuch of my research examines processes related to identity maintenance and their implications for social problems. One primary aim of my research is the development of theory-driven, rigorously tested intervention strategies that further our understanding of the processes underpinning social problems and that offer solutions to alleviate them. Two key questions lie at the core of my research: “Given that a problem exists, what are its underlying processes?” And, “Once identified, how can these processes be overcome?” One reason for this interest in intervention is my belief that a useful way to understand psychological processes and social systems is to try to change them. We also are interested in how and when seemingly brief interventions, attuned to underlying psychological processes, produce large and long-lasting psychological and behavioral change.
The methods that my lab uses include laboratory experiments, longitudinal studies, content analyses, and randomized field experiments. One specific area of research addresses the effects of group identity on achievement, with a focus on under-performance and racial and gender achievement gaps. Additional research programs address hiring discrimination, the psychology of closed-mindedness and inter-group conflict, and psychological processes underlying anti-social and health-risk behavior.
