We use mouse genetics, combinatorial immunochemical labeling and high-resolution laser scanning microscopy to identify, manipulate, and quantitatively analyze synaptic contacts within the complex neuronal milieu of the spinal cord and the enteric nervous system.

Siva Kasinathan
Instructor, Pediatrics - Rheumatology
BioSiva Kasinathan, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist and Instructor of Pediatric Rheumatology at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. In addition to caring for children and young adults with rheumatic diseases in his clinical practice, Siva conducts research to advance the understanding of mechanisms of autoimmunity and autoinflammation.
Siva holds an MD and PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Washington, where he developed several high-throughput methods for epigenome profiling and contributed new insights in chromatin biology and gene regulation. During his clinical training in pediatrics and rheumatology at Stanford, Siva pioneered approaches for single-molecule analysis of genetic variation, DNA methylation, and chromatin structure, and established a longitudinal rheumatic disease cohort and biorepository.
Siva’s current research bridges genomics and immunology with a focus on developing and applying sensitive technologies to unravel the genetic and molecular underpinnings of lupus, arthritis, and other immune-mediated diseases. As a physician-scientist, Siva is committed to translating fundamental discoveries into precision therapies and biomarkers to improve outcomes for patients with rheumatic diseases. -
Aanchal Preet Kaur

BioDr. Aanchal Preet Kaur is a post-doctoral fellow in the Ramakrishna lab interested in understanding the role of myeloid cells in driving immunosuppression and resistance to CAR T cell therapies in pediatric patients with diffuse midline glioma. Her work involves developing organoid models to study the interaction of myeloid cells and CAR T cells and further employ these models to validate targets identified in patient single cell sequencing data using CRISPR technology.
Dr. Aanchal Preet Kaur received her PhD in Oncology at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom where she focused on developing dendritic cell vaccines for melanoma. In her earlier post-doctoral work at Providence Cancer Institute with Dr. Michael Gough, she developed spheroid models to study the impact of radiation therapy on immune cell-cancer cell interactions. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMark A. Kay, M.D., Ph.D. Director of the Program in Human Gene Therapy and Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Genetics. Respected worldwide for his work in gene therapy for hemophilia, Dr. Kay and his laboratory focus on establishing the scientific principles and developing the technologies needed for achieving persistent and therapeutic levels of gene expression in vivo. The major disease models are hemophilia, hepatitis C, and hepatitis B viral infections.

BioThe management of inflammatory bowel disease continues to evolve, with the introduction of biologic and small molecule therapies and new goals of treatment, with an emphasis on healing the bowel. My career goal since my graduation from IBD fellowship in 2012 has been to improve the outcomes and quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. In line with these goals, my research has focused investigating new noninvasive diagnostic test, finding factors early in the disease course that might predict a more aggressive disease course and need for different therapies, and investigating new promising effective medications with less side effects.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch in this laboratory focuses on problems where deep insights into enzymology and metabolism can be harnessed to improve human health.
For the past two decades, we have studied and engineered enzymatic assembly lines called polyketide synthases that catalyze the biosynthesis of structurally complex and medicinally fascinating antibiotics in bacteria. An example of such an assembly line is found in the erythromycin biosynthetic pathway. Our current focus is on understanding the structure and mechanism of this polyketide synthase. At the same time, we are developing methods to decode the vast and growing number of orphan polyketide assembly lines in the sequence databases.
For more than a decade, we have also investigated the pathogenesis of celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine, with the goal of discovering therapies and related management tools for this widespread but overlooked disease. Ongoing efforts focus on understanding the pivotal role of transglutaminase 2 in triggering the inflammatory response to dietary gluten in the celiac intestine. -
Joseph Kim

BioJoseph J. Kim, MD is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Kim also serves as the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Stanford University and as the Associate Chief Medical Officer of Stanford Children’s Health. Dr. Kim’s career has focused on medical leadership and program building in pediatric hospital medicine. He has been active locally and nationally promoting patient experience, with particular emphasis on family centered care in pediatric inpatient settings. He has participated in numerous local and national care improvement programs including efforts around bronchiolitis, inpatient asthma management, pediatric sedation, medical co-management of surgical patients and patient care progression in inpatient settings. In his hospital administrative roles he has championed safety rounding, family centered rounding, scheduled based care of inpatients, discharge planning and value based performance improvement. Dr. Kim has mentored dozens of trainees and junior faculty in healthcare leadership and program administration.
Dr. Kim received his BA in Sociology from the University of Virginia and his MD from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He completed his residency in pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco. Clinically, Dr. Kim practices as a Pediatric Hospitalist at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and at California Pacific Medical Center. -

She served as the LPCH Medical Staff President from 2018-2020.

On Partial Leave from 09/16/2025 To 03/31/2026Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study the development of pancreatic islet cells using molecular, embryologic and genetic methods in several model systems, including mice, pigs, human pancreas, embryonic stem cells, and Drosophila. Our work suggests that critical factors required for islet development are also needed to maintain essential functions of the mature islet. These approaches have informed efforts to generate replacement islets from renewable sources for diabetes.
