Masashi Miyauchi
Postdoctoral Scholar, Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine
BioMasashi Miyauchi, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist specializing in hematology, oncology, immunology, and stem cell biology, with over a decade of experience in clinical hematology and oncology. Dr. Miyauchi's academic career commenced at Kyoto University, where he obtained his MD in Medicine. He furthered his expertise with a PhD in Internal Medicine from The University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Medicine. Following his comprehensive clinical training and professional appointments at The University of Tokyo Hospital, Dr. Miyauchi embarked on a postdoctoral journey at Stanford University in the Nakauchi lab, starting in July 2019.
Dr. Miyauchi's clinical training is extensive, including a Senior Residency in Internal Medicine and a Clinical Fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at The University of Tokyo Hospital. This period was complemented by his participation in a Cancer Professional Training Plan. After completing his clinical fellowship, Dr. Miyauchi has served in various pivotal roles at The University of Tokyo Hospital and The University of Tokyo. His positions as a clinically-focused Project Assistant Professor and Assistant Professor in the Department of Hematology and Oncology have enabled him to contribute significantly to pioneering research and education for the next wave of medical professionals.
In his PhD research, Dr. Miyauchi specialized in the disease modeling of cancers and cancer stem cells, employing cancer patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). His work with iPSCs notably includes scalable ex vivo manufacturing of human neutrophils. In his postdoctoral research under the guidance of Dr. Hiromitsu Nakauchi in Genetics at Stanford, Dr. Miyauchi has been concentrating on developing a stable hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) expansion system in both mouse and human models. His research is focused on exploring the potential applications of this expansion system, underlining his commitment to advancing the fields of stem cell biology, regenerative medicine and oncology. -

BioHi I am a masters student in the ICME. I also interned with Yoshua Bengio over the summer of 2016 and published a theoretical paper(first author). It was presented at ICASSP 2017 in a lecture session. I am interested in using my mathematical skills to improve the world. I am looking for opportunities to improve energy distribution, sustainability, poverty and other like minded things.
I am also keenly interested in improv and how it can improve my mental approach to life. I plan on getting involved in the improv scene in New York for one year starting in the summer of 2017! -

I am a certified performance and sport scientist (CPSS) and a certified strength and conditioning specialist with distinction (CSCS, *D) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). In 2022, I was honored with the 2022 Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship. As a research exercise and sport scientist, I am interested in understanding the mechanical, molecular, and physiological mechanisms of human performance. Additionally, I am interested in creating new and practical training methods to improve human exercise and sports performance.

Eric Mou, MD

BioI was born in Oregon and raised in Iowa, where I cultivated my initial interest in science and medicine. I completed my undergraduate degree and medical school at the University of Iowa before heading to Stanford University for my internal medicine residency and oncology fellowship training. I chose this field to try my best in assisting patients during times of great need, and working to understand what is of greatest importance to them as they navigate their unique journey of cancer care. My clinical focus is in the care of patients with lymphoma and other hematologic cancers. My scholarly interests include better understanding the efficacy cancer therapeutics, improving patients' experience as the proceed through treatment, and promoting strength in medical education.

Solene Moulin

BioI am a very curious person who likes to understand how things work and I love to contribute to new discoveries that will help to cope with tomorrow’s challenges. After my studies at the Ecole Normale Supérieure Ulm, I got specialized in plant science. I am interested in this research field because plants are critical for environment as well as for food and bio-energy production. In 2016, I joined CEA Cadarache for my PhD which led me to participate in a research program on hydrocarbon synthesis in algae. I really liked this project which was focusing on both reaching a bio-based production of hydrocarbons for fuel production and deciphering of the hydrocarbon synthesis pathway in algae. I have been leading research to assess the occurrence of this pathway in the different types of eukaryotic algae, its evolutionary history and its relevance for algal physiology. I am now going to study another evolutionary history that has led to a symbiosis between a diatom and a N-fixing cyanobacteria, the latest being on its way to become an organelle. Understanding the physiological relationship between the diatom and the cyanobacteria will help understanding nitrogen cycle and could lead to major innovations in farming.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsUse electronic health records (EHRs) to identify and classify common ocular diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. We aim to develop an approach to accurately identify these conditions using EHRs. This will be followed by cluster analysis to identify novel subtypes of these conditions that have not been recognized before. Finally, we will develop an approach to extract outcome data from EHRs for patients with these conditions in the primary care setting.

BioPremature birth is a leading cause of developmental and neuropsychiatric disorders in children. One of the factors causing these defects is lowered levels of available oxygen (hypoxia) in the newborn due to immature lungs. My research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying hypoxia-induced developmental disorders of the nervous system due to preterm birth.

Michitaka Nakano

BioI am a MD/PhD postdoctoral fellow and medical oncologist with a long-standing interest in translational cancer research. My long-term goal is to be a lab-based physician-scientist and independent academic researcher, translating basic cancer research, and mentoring next-generation scientists. My thesis work in Japan focused on cancer stem cell equilibrium by uniquely applying organoid culture as a method to elucidate cancer stem cell dynamics, which was awarded in Japanese Cancer Association. Along with the development of the field represented by success in T cell checkpoint, my interest gradually shifted to immune oncology while I examined numerous numbers of cancer patients as a medical oncology fellow. My postdoctoral fellowship at Calvin Kuo Lab in Stanford (2019-present) focuses on tumor immune microenvironment. Kuo lab developed a unique 3D air-liquid interface (ALI) organoid system that cultures tumors while preserving their endogenous infiltrating immune cells (T,B ,NK, Myeloid cells). My postdoctoral work will prove the significance of organoids as a translational tool to discover tumor-immune interaction by novel checkpoint inhibitors for immune cells, which can be broadly applicable to basic cancer biology, precision medicine, therapeutics validation and biomarker discovery.

My journey began with a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from KU Leuven in Belgium, where I delved into the complexities of machine learning algorithms and their transformative potential in healthcare settings. My research, particularly focused on adapting these algorithms for time-to-event data (a method used for predicting specific events in a patient’s future), has not only been a challenging endeavor but also a deeply fulfilling one.
Now at Stanford, my role involves not just advancing machine learning integration in healthcare, but also collaborating with a diverse team of experts. Together, we're striving to unravel complex healthcare challenges and improve patient outcomes. -

BioMy long-term scientific ambition entails establishing an interdisciplinary and diverse laboratory primarily focused on countering antibiotic resistance. This objective comprises three central elements: elucidating the bacterial calcium transduction pathway, crafting innovative therapeutics to treat antibiotic-resistant deep tissue infections, and comprehending how calcium signaling stimulates bacterial pathogenesis mechanisms.
The foundation of my research experience supports the existence of calcium signal transduction pathways in bacteria. This conclusion aligns with various studies that drew indirect connections between calcium signaling and the regulation of other bacterial physiological processes, including virulence.
A thorough grasp of the mechanism by which calcium regulates multidrug-resistant functions, such as efflux, is a crucial stride toward mitigating the global crisis of antibiotic resistance. I am dedicated to contributing significantly to this path of exploration, ultimately driving impactful scientific development and healthcare improvement. -

Madelena Ng

BioDr. Ng is a postdoctoral fellow at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research, mentored by Dr. Tina Hernandez Boussard. Her research aims to illuminate the evolving ethical and practical challenges with emerging technologies used for health purposes. Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Ng facilitated mobile- and internet-based health research initiatives with the Health eHeart Study and the Eureka Digital Research Platform and developed research study prototypes that used blockchain technology for health data exchange. Her current work focuses on discerning key challenges that exist at each stage of the AI life cycle and generating informed guidance to drive the responsible and equitable use of AI for patient care.

In collaboration with Safaran ChEM-H Medicinal Chemistry Knowledge Center, his research objective is to harness the power of organic synthesis toward the development of novel antiviral therapies. Minh obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania under the direction of Prof. Amos B. Smith, III, where his doctoral work centered on the convergent total synthesis of two marine natural products nahuoic acids Cii and Dii.

Kenneth Nieser

BioKen Nieser is a postdoctoral research fellow through the Big Data-Scientist Training Enhancement Program (BD-STEP) at the Palo Alto VA and in the Department of Surgery, Stanford School of Medicine. Ken received a BA in Physics and Mathematics from Swarthmore College and a PhD in Epidemiology with a minor in Statistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During his PhD, Ken developed and applied statistical methods for improving algorithmic fairness of data analyses used to inform screening and treatment of mental illnesses. These projects included development of an approach for detecting sample subsets with differential psychological symptom patterns and a sample representation reweighting method for improving the precision of subgroup-specific treatment effect estimation.
Ken’s current research interests are in health care inequities, quality measurement, and algorithmic fairness. During his fellowship, Ken will be working on investigating the statistical reliability of quality measures and decomposing health care disparities to provide practical information for resolving inequities, with applications in mental health care and surgical care. -
Kouta Niizuma
Basic Life Research Scientist, Stem Cell Bio Regenerative Med Institute
BioI am a Research Scientist in Prof. Hiromitsu Nakauchi's laboratory at Stanford University. I obtained my PhD in Immunology from the University of Tsukuba, Japan. During my doctoral studies in Prof. Akira Shibuya's laboratory, I focused on the characterization of cell surface receptors expressed on immune cells. I successfully cloned a novel human immunoglobulin-like receptor, CD300H, and established a specific monoclonal antibody. My research demonstrated that CD300H is expressed on a subset of human monocytes and dendritic cells and plays a crucial role in enhancing inflammation by promoting the production of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines.
During my PhD, I also studied as a visiting scholar in Prof. Lewis L. Lanier's laboratory at UCSF, where I investigated the role of the activating receptor NKG2D on NK cells in viral immunity.
Since May 2018, I have been a member of the Nakauchi lab. My current research focuses on the development of new immunotherapies using myeloid cells derived from iPS cells, the generation of monoclonal antibodies, and hematopoietic stem cell biology. -
Ke Ning

BioDr. Ning currently joins Dr. Yang Sun’s lab as a postdoctoral fellow at Dept. of Ophthalmology, Stanford University. Her current research interests include cilia-mediated signaling in RPE-related diseases and glaucoma. Dr. Ning received her MD at Xiamen University in China and completed her internship at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated with Xiamen University. Her long-term research interest is to understand primary cilia roles in ocular development and how alterations in cilia-related gene expression contribute to eye diseases. Her further goal is to be a physician-scientist and to translate scientific discoveries to patient therapies. Some of her hobbies are cycling, reading, and skiing.

Connor Galen O'Brien

BioDr. O'Brien is a native of Menlo Park, CA. He attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. At Columbia he was elected to both Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honors Societies. He completed an Internal Medicine residency as well as fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University. In his third year of fellowship, he was selected Chief Cardiology Fellow.
He is currently a post-doctoral fellow performing regenerative medicine research, specifically studying the role of exosomes in treating cardiomyopathy. In addition to his basic science research, he is also involved in human clinical trials investigating the role of stem cells in treating various forms of cardiomyopathy. -

Aluya Oseghale, PhD

BioMy primary goal is to develop an independent research career in hematology. As an African from a family background afflicted by hereditary hematologic disorders, I have longed to be part of research efforts to develop better treatments for blood diseases. My doctoral research focused on sickle cell disease where I conducted a preclinical investigation of a novel derivative of butyrate as a drug candidate for ameliorating the complications of the illness (Oseghale AR et al. Blood Cells Mol Dis. 2019 Jul 9;79:102345). My current focus as a postdoctoral scholar, in the Porteus laboratory, is to use CRISPR/Cas9 for genomic modification of human primary cells for curative therapeutic applications. A major aim of my project is to develop an automated closed system for the manufacturing of CRISPR/Cas9-engineered chimeric antigen receptor-expressing (CAR) T cells.

In August 2020, he received his Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering from Kyungpook National University, South Korea. During his Ph.D., he worked on wirelessly powered cardiac pacemakers and wearable cardiac arrhythmia indicators.
