Nicholas Melosh
Professor of Materials Science and Engineering
On Leave from 04/01/2025 To 06/30/2025BioThe Melosh group explores how to apply new methods from the semiconductor and self-assembly fields to important problems in biology, materials, and energy. We think about how to rationally design engineered interfaces to enhance communication with biological cells and tissues, or to improve energy conversion and materials synthesis. In particular, we are interested in seamlessly integrating inorganic structures together with biology for improved cell transfection and therapies, and designing new materials, often using diamondoid molecules as building blocks.
My group is very interested in how to design new inorganic structures that will seamless integrate with biological systems to address problems that are not feasible by other means. This involves both fundamental work such as to deeply understand how lipid membranes interact with inorganic surfaces, electrokinetic phenomena in biologically relevant solutions, and applying this knowledge into new device designs. Examples of this include “nanostraw” drug delivery platforms for direct delivery or extraction of material through the cell wall using a biomimetic gap-junction made using nanoscale semiconductor processing techniques. We also engineer materials and structures for neural interfaces and electronics pertinent to highly parallel data acquisition and recording. For instance, we have created inorganic electrodes that mimic the hydrophobic banding of natural transmembrane proteins, allowing them to ‘fuse’ into the cell wall, providing a tight electrical junction for solid-state patch clamping. In addition to significant efforts at engineering surfaces at the molecular level, we also work on ‘bridge’ projects that span between engineering and biological/clinical needs. My long history with nano- and microfabrication techniques and their interactions with biological constructs provide the skills necessary to fabricate and analyze new bio-electronic systems.

My research on childhood health disparities centers on Latino and immigrant children with a focus on early childhood health and development. My work in workforce diversity examines the pipeline for diversity in academic pediatrics, with special attention on the pipeline for underrepresent minorities.

Joshua Menke
Clinical Assistant Professor, Pathology
BioDr. Joshua Menke completed his hematopathology fellowship at Stanford and a cytopathology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). His clinical and research interests lie at the intersection of hematopathology, cytopathology, and advanced single-cell and cell-free diagnostic techniques. As the Associate Section Director of Clinical Flow Cytometry at Stanford, Dr. Menke is developing and validating new minimal residual disease assays for detecting low levels of myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms in the post-treatment setting, as well as multiple other 12-color flow assays with the latest markers for routine phenotyping.
Dr. Menke is the recipient of the Paul E. Strandjord Young Investigator Award from the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Scientists and the Laurence J. Marton Award for Excellence in Research from UCSF for his translational work on CALR mutations at the UCSF Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. Dr. Menke is a founding member of the Cytology-Hematopathology Interinstitutional Collaboration (CHIC), which aims to study the performance of cytology samples in diagnosing lymphoma across large datasets from five academic institutions. He currently chairs this group, leading large clinical research studies. -

Antonio Meola, MD, PhD
BioAntonio Meola M.D. Ph.D graduated Summa cum Laude and Research Honors at the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2008, and completed his residency training in Neurosurgery at the same Institution in July 2015. Dr Meola attended a Ph.D. program at the University of Florence, Italy, where he discussed a doctoral thesis entitled "A New Head-Mounted Display-based Augmented Reality System in Neurosurgical Oncology: a study on phantom".
Since 2/2014 to 1/2015 Dr Meola completed a Research Fellowship in Neurosurgical anatomy at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), under the Direction of Dr. Juan C. Fernandez-Miranda. The main focus of his research was the surgical neuroanatomy of the white matter tracts of the human brain.
Since 7/2015 to 6/2016 Dr Meola served as Clinical Fellow in Image-Guided Neurosurgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, MA (Director: Dr. Alexandra J. Golby M.D.). During the fellowship, he focused on the clinical application and integration of advanced imaging techniques, including intraoperative-MRI, intraoperative US, functional MRI, tractography.
Since 7/2016 to 6/2017 Dr Meola completed a Neurosurgical Oncology Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH, devoting his efforts to minimally-invasive neurosurgical techniques, such as Laser interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (Gamma Knife), as well as to awake neurosurgery.
Starting 7/2017, Dr Meola joined the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford. Dr. Meola mainly focuses on conventional and innovative treatments for brain and skull base tumors, including both surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery (CyberKnife). -
Mark Mercola

BioDr. Mercola is Professor of Medicine and Professor in the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. He completed postdoctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, was on the faculty in the Department of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School for 12 years, and later at the Sanford-Burnham-Prebys Institute and Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego before relocating to Stanford in 2015.
Prof. Mercola is known for identifying many of the factors that are responsible for inducing and forming the heart, including the discovery that Wnt inhibition is a critical step in cardiogenesis that provided the conceptual basis and reagents for the large-scale production of cardiovascular tissues from pluripotent stem cells. He has collaborated with medicinal chemists, optical engineers and software developers to pioneer the use of patient iPSC-cardiomyocytes for disease modeling, safety pharmacology and drug development. His academic research is focused on developing and using quantitative high throughput assays of patient-specific cardiomyocyte function to discover druggable targets for preserving contractile function in heart failure and promoting regeneration following ischemic injury. He co-established drug screening and assay development at the Conrad Prebys Drug Discovery Center (San Diego), which operated as one of 4 large screening centers of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) Molecular Libraries screening initiative and continues as one of the largest academic drug screening centers.
Prof. Mercola received an NIH MERIT award for his work on heart formation. He holds numerous patents, including describing the invention of the first engineered dominant negative protein and small molecules for stem cell and cancer applications. He serves on multiple editorial and advisory boards, including Vala Sciences, Regencor, The Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research and the Human Biomolecular Research Institute. His laboratory is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Phospholamban Foundation and Fondation Leducq. -

BioMatthew Mesias, M.D., is a Geriatrician and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and furthered his training internal medicine residency and geriatrics fellowship at the University of Washington. He serves as the Medical Director of the Inpatient Geriatrics Consult Service at Stanford University Hospital. His academic interests include quality improvement in geriatric care, mentorship of medical trainees, and the development of curricula for geriatrics medical education. In 2023, he was awarded the HRSA Geriatric Academic Career Award, which supports his leadership and professional development while creating geriatric educational programs for community-partnered clinics.

But we know remarkably little about these solutes. We should be able to improve treatment if we knew more about what we are trying to remove.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe research focus of the laboratory is the study of sleep and sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and Kleine Levin syndrome. We also study the neurobiological and genetic basis of the EEG and develop new tools to study sleep using nocturnal polysomnography. Approaches mostly involve human genetic studies (GWAS, sequencing), EEG signal analysis (deep learning), and immunology (narcolepsy is an autoimmune disease of the brain). We also work on autoimmune encephalitis.

BioDr. Lekha Mikkilineni is a board-certified medical oncologist. She is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Blood & Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy.
Dr. Mikkilineni has extensive experience treating blood and bone marrow cancers. She currently provides care through the Bone Marrow Transplant & Cellular Therapy Program at Stanford Health Care. Her clinical focus is multiple myeloma, plasma-cell leukemia, Extramedullary myeloma, high-risk myeloma, CAR T cell therapy, bispecific therapy, amyloidosis, POEMS syndrome, and Waldenstrom’s macroglobunemia.
Dr. Mikkilineni’s research centers on exploring novel CAR T-cell therapies to treat multiple myeloma and to define mechanisms of resistance to immunotherapy. She is particularly focused on understanding how to improve therapies for multiple myeloma patients who have extramedullary disease or high-risk features. Prior to coming to Stanford, she ran phase 1 CAR T-cell trials for multiple myeloma targeting BCMA and SLAMF7 at the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Mikkilineni received the Conquer Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology for her research focusing on SLAMF7 as a potential target for multiple myeloma. She has received honors and awards for her work at the NCI. She has completed fellowships in hematology/oncology and immunotherapy at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute/National Cancer Institute. She finished her residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She holds a Master of Science in medical sciences from Boston University and a medical degree from Tulane University.
Dr. Mikkilineni has authored book chapters and published research in numerous high-impact academic journals. She has presented her findings through oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences. -

BioDr. Travis Miller is a fellowship-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Stanford Health Care. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Miller specializes in plastic surgery from head to toe with additional training in hand and microsurgery. He treats a multitude of conditions of the hand and upper extremity, including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, hand and wrist fractures, wrist pain and instability, arthritis, cubital tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s, and brachial plexus injury. He specializes in complex reconstruction all over the body using both local tissues and free tissue transfer. He has a special interest in peripheral nerve surgery, including treating nerve compression syndromes, tumors, traumatic injuries, amputation pain, neuromas, and migraines. He also performs aesthetic surgery, and for all his patients he strives to achieve their functional and cosmetic goals.
Dr. Miller received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School where he graduated first in his class. He completed his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery through Stanford University School of Medicine. Before pursuing a fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at the University of Washington, he also completed an in-residency fellowship at the Buncke Clinic in San Francisco, widely considered the birthplace of microsurgery.
Dr. Miller has an extensive research background. He collaborated with a team that invented and patented a medical device used for coiled surgical tools and catheters. In addition to book chapters and monographs, he has written numerous peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that have been published in journals such as The Journal of Hand Surgery, The Journal of Surgical Oncology, Microsurgery, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Miller has presented his research at regional, national, and international meetings. -
Rebecca Kate Miller-Kuhlmann

BioRebecca Miller-Kuhlmann, MD is board certified in Neurology and in Electrodiagnostic Medicine and practices as a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology & Neurological Sciences at Stanford University. She earned her MD from UCSF School of Medicine and completed residency and fellowship training at Stanford University. Her fellowship training in Comprehensive Clinical Neurology centered around movement disorders, memory/cognitive disorders neuromuscular medicine/EMG/NCS studies, and therapeutic applications of botulinum toxin with supplementary training in headache, epilepsy and neuroimmunology. Her clinical focus is diagnosis and treatment of neurologic conditions with commitment to maintaining a wide-breadth of knowledge in order to best treat complex patients with multiple neurologic issues.
Academically, Dr Miller-Kuhlmann is passionate about medical education and physician wellbeing. Prior to her career in medicine, Dr Miller-Kuhlmann was a public school teacher in Oakland, CA. She completed the UCSF health professions education pathway with a dean's award for research in medical student reflection during medical school. During residency she served as education chief resident and earned an honors certificate in medical education at Stanford, She continues to enjoy working with medical students and residents in the clinic as well as the classroom. She directs the Science of Medicine course which covers physiology and pathology of each organ system for first and second year medical students, and as of 2023 has had the priviledge to serve as the Assistant Dean for Preclerkship Education. At the residency level, she serves as the co-director for a novel communication coaching program within the Stanford Neurology Residency.
Dr. Miller-Kuhlmann served as the Wellbeing Director for the Department of Neurology from 2017-2024 and remains interested in multi-level strategies for promotion of professional fulfillment and mitigation of physician burnout. Nationally, she was an inaugural graduate of the American Academy of Neurology's Live Well Lead Well Leadership programs, serves on the AAN physician wellness subcommittee, and has had the opportunity to speak on physician wellbeing at the AAN annual meeting. Locally, she co-developed a wellbeing program for neurology residents and fellows, participates in the neurology wellbeing committee, and through close partnership with department quality improvement leaders has served on projects to improve physician wellbeing through a focus on system supports and efficiencies. To this end, she is also a graduate of the Stanford Clinical Effectiveness Leadership Program which develops skills in quality improvement and change management. She also co-developed a project-based novel quality improvement curriculum for residents with an eye toward empowering and supporting trainees in becoming agents of change within the system which continues to run annually. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThrough neurophysiological investigations of eye movements and neuronal pathways, Dr. Minor has identified adaptive mechanisms responsible for compensation to vestibular injury in a model system for studies of motor learning. Following his discovery of superior canal dehiscence, he published a description of the disorder’s clinical manifestations and related its cause to an opening in the bone covering of the superior canal. He subsequently developed a surgical procedure to correct the problem.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research interests focused on the biology and pathogenesis of cytomegalovirus (CMV), an opportunistic pathogen that causes significant disease worldwide, reporting discoveries in areas of CMV gene regulation, DNA replication and packaging, maturation, impact on the host cell, disease pathogenesis, latency and reactivation, host cell death signaling and chemokine system. In the last 20 years of my academic career, we studied viral cell death suppressors and discovered ZBP1-RIPK3 necroptosis.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsTwo areas: 1. Using rationally-designed peptide inhibitors to study protein-protein interactions in cell signaling. Focus: protein kinase C in heart and large GTPases regulating mitochondrial dynamics in neurodegdenration. 2. Using small molecules (identified in a high throughput screens and synthetic chemistry) as activators and inhibitors of aldehyde dehydrogenases, a family of detoxifying enzymes, and glucose-6-phoshate dehydrogenase, in normal cells and in models of human diseases.

Maha Abdalla Mohamed, MD, FACP, FAST

BioDr. Mohamed is a board-certified, fellowship-trained nephrologist with the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Stanford Healthcare. She is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology.
Dr. Mohamed specializes in kidney and pancreas transplant outcomes and kidney transplant health equity. Conditions she treats include allografts rejection, recipient BK virus and CMV infection, and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder management. Dr. Mohamed is known for her personalized and comprehensive approach to patient care. She takes the time to understand her patients’ unique health needs and creates tailored care plans that fit their lifestyles.
Dr. Mohamed’s research interests include examining new approaches to improving kidney transplant long-term outcome including kidney transplant rejection and infection. She also seeks to develop better screening and monitoring guidance to help reduce post-transplant BK virus and CMV infection.
Dr. Mohamed’s published work can be found in peer-reviewed journals such as Clinical Transplantation, Transplant Infectious Disease and Transplantation. She has presented to her peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including at the American Transplant Congress and the American Society of Nephrology. She has also been invited to speak multiple times at King Faisal Hospital in Rwanda as well as in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on topics like post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder, update in kidney transplant rejection, and update in living-donor kidney transplantation.
Dr. Mohamed is a faculty fellow of Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, fellow of the American Society of Transplantation, a board of managers member of the AST Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Training Accreditation Program, member of the International Society of Nephrology and the American Society of Nephrology. -
Anita Tanniru Mohan, MBBS, PhD, MBA
Clinical Assistant Professor, Surgery - Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
BioDr. Anita Mohan is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who provides care at the Stanford Health Care Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Clinic. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Mohan completed core surgical training and several years of plastic surgery training in university teaching hospitals in London and Cambridge, UK. Dr. Mohan also completed a one-year clinical fellowship at University of Cape Town, South Africa, in pediatric burns, plastic surgery, and hand surgery. She subsequently completed a second residency at the Mayo Clinic in plastic surgery, followed by advanced fellowship training in microsurgery at Stanford.
Dr. Mohan performs a wide range of surgeries, including complex reconstructive surgery for breast, trunk, and lower extremities; cosmetic (aesthetic) procedures; and surgery using microscopes and precise tools (microsurgery and supermicrosurgery). She has a particular interest in complex reconstruction for lymphedema, using the latest techniques in microsurgery, perforator flaps, and transfer of a healthy nerve to a damaged nerve (neurotization) to restore sensation. She also has an interest in expanding the role of robotic and minimally invasive techniques in reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Mohan has experience in the management of lipedema, gender-affirming top surgeries with neurotization for sensation preservation, and body contouring surgery following massive weight loss. She also performs breast surgery, including augmentation, revision, reconstruction, and reduction; skin cancer reconstruction; esophageal reconstruction; and other reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries. Dr. Mohan believes in tailoring care to the patient’s specific needs and goals and works toward restoring form, function, and the physical and mental well-being of her patients.
Dr. Mohan’s research interests include lymphedema, lipedema, gender-affirming top surgeries, and massive weight loss body contouring. She also has a strong interest in microcirculation (blood flow through the smallest blood vessels) and has worked on surgical simulation training for microsurgery and 3D modeling projects.
Dr. Mohan has published her research in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Plastic and Aesthetic Research, Annals of Translational Medicine, ePlasty, Annals of Surgery, and Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery. Dr. Mohan serves on several American Society of Plastic Surgeons committees and as a journal reviewer. She has also served as an associate editor for the Plastic Surgery Education Network and Frontiers in Surgery.
Dr. Mohan has presented to her peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including the World Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery.
Dr. Mohan is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. -

BioI was born, raised, and trained in Nashik, India where I completed my formal Medical Education before moving to New York City where I completed my residency in Internal Medicine at New York Downtown Hospital in New York, NY. My interests are in preventative medicne, health and wellness, occupational and environmental safety. In Stanford's Occupational Health Department, I practice clinical occupational medicine while working toward identifying health and safety issues within our enviroment to prevent further injury and illness to our employees.

James M. Mok, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Mok is a board-certified, fellowship-trained spine surgeon with the Stanford Medicine Spine Center in Redwood City. He is also a clinical associate professor of medicine in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Mok diagnoses and treats a wide range of degenerative spine conditions, including disc herniations, spinal stenosis, myelopathy, and spondylolisthesis, as well as patients who have had previous spine surgery. He specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques and strives to perform the least invasive procedures with the highest chances of success. His surgical specialties include minimally invasive microdiscectomy and laminectomy, minimally invasive spinal fusion, and artificial disc replacement.
Prior to Stanford, Dr. Mok worked as an orthopaedic spine surgeon with the NorthShore Orthopaedic and Spine Institute, the only dedicated orthopedic specialty hospital in the Chicago region. He was previously Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Mok served on active duty in the United States Army Medical Corps with the rank of Major. His military experience included deployment to the Iraq theater as an orthopaedic surgeon and spine surgery consultant.
Dr. Mok has published work in many leading journals in his field, including The Spine Journal, Spine, and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has presented to his peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including annual meetings of the North American Spine Society, the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Hylton Molzof, PhD, MPH
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Sleep Medicine
BioDr. Molzof is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Licensed Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford School of Medicine. She specializes in the assessment and treatment of sleep disorders via behavioral sleep medicine interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) and positive airway pressure (PAP) desensitization. She also utilizes evidence-based techniques to help patients better manage circadian rhythm disorders, such as delayed sleep-wake phase disorder and shift work sleep disorder. Inspired by her background in public health, she has a strong interest in quality improvement and program development projects aimed at enhancing the quality and accessibility of sleep and circadian medicine for the diverse patient population served by Stanford Sleep Medicine Center.

We use several model systems to study complex host-pathogen interactions in the gut and in immune cells such as macrophages and dendritic cells. Ultimately we would like to understand how Salmonella persists within certain hosts for years in the face of a robust immune response.

Brent Monseur, MD, ScM

BioBrent Monseur, MD, ScM, FACOG (he/they) is a board certified obstetrician/gynecologist and the founding director of the LGBTQ+ Family Building Clinical Research Program at Stanford University School of Medicine. They are an Instructor in the Department of OBGYN and lead a highly specialized team dedicated to improving reproductive outcomes for sexual and gender minority populations. They completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility at Stanford University after finishing an OB GYN Residency at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Monseur received a medical doctorate from the Medical College of Virginia. They trained as a reproductive biologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where they completed a Master of Science degree. Dr. Monseur received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry with a concentration in Spanish from the University of Mary Washington.
They have received numerous awards for their work with the LGBTQ+ community including the inaugural Stanford Graduate Medical Education Award for Promoting Health Equity, the Diversity Fellowship Research Award from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and an NIH Health Disparities Research Loan Repayment Program award. They serve as a chair of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s LGBTQ+ Special Interest Group and have previously served as a board member of two non-profit organizations dedicated to reproductive justice: Medical Students for Choice and Path2Parenthood (now Family Equality). -
Tamara Montacute, MD, MPH

BioTamara Kailoa Montacute is a board certified Family Medicine physician. She enjoys taking care of the entire family (including kids), and has special interest in women’s health, adolescent health, community health, chronic disease management, mental health and office based procedures. She also speaks Spanish.
She was born in New Zealand, grew up in England and moved to Seattle when she was twelve. Prior to attending medical school at Stanford, she completed her Masters in Public Health at Columbia University and spent several years working on public health programs in Mexico, Panama, Ethiopia and Rwanda. After medical school, she completed a Family Medicine Residency at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose. She is the co-medical director of Arbor Free Clinic, teaches several primary care focused medical student courses and spends part of her time caring for patients at the Samaritan House Free Clinics in Redwood City and San Mateo.
Outside the clinic, she enjoys hiking, biking, gardening and playing with her daughter and 2 dogs. -

Maria Emilia Montez Rath

BioDr. Montez-Rath completed her PhD in Biostatistics from Boston University in 2008 focusing on methods for modeling interaction effects in studies involving populations with high levels of comorbidity, such as persons on dialysis. She is a senior biostatistician and director of the Biostatistics Core of the Division of Nephrology at Stanford University where she has been collaborating with faculty and fellows since 2010 to study a variety of research questions relevant to kidney disease. Her methodological interests are mainly data-driven and include the handling of missing data, survival analysis with an emphasis on models for time-varying covariates and competing risks, methods for analyzing epidemiologic studies, analysis of correlated data and comparative effectiveness studies, as well as data visualization.

Thomas Montine, MD, PhD

On Leave from 05/01/2025 To 05/31/2025BioDr. Montine received his education at Columbia University (BA in Chemistry), the University of Rochester (PhD in Pharmacology), and McGill University (MD and CM). His postgraduate medical training was at Duke University, and he was junior faculty at Vanderbilt University where he was awarded the Thorne Professorship in Pathology. In 2002, Dr. Montine was appointed as the Alvord Endowed Professor in Neuropathology and Director of the Division of Neuropathology at the University of Washington. He was Director of the University of Washington Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, one of the original 10 Centers in the US, and passed that responsibility to able colleagues. Dr. Montine was the founding Director of the Pacific Udall Center, a NINDS-funded Morris K. Udall Centers of Excellence for Parkinson’s Disease Research. In 2010, Dr. Montine was appointed Chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of Washington. In 2016, Dr. Montine was appointed Chair of the Department of Pathology at Stanford University where he is the Stanford Medicine Endowed Professor in Pathology.
The focus of the Montine Laboratory is on the structural and molecular bases of cognitive impairment. The Montine Laboratory addresses this prevalent, unmet medical need through a combination of neuropathology, biomarkers for detection and progression of early disease, and experimental studies that test hypotheses concerning specific mechanisms of neuron injury and then develop novel approaches to neuroprotection. Our current approaches include small molecule precision therapeutics and cell replacement strategies for brain. -

Andrew Reese Moore

Postdoctoral Scholar, Pulmonary and Critical Care MedicineCurrent Research and Scholarly InterestsI am co-mentored by Dr. Angela Rogers and Dr. Purvesh Khatri. My research focuses on leveraging machine learning on multi-omic data to evaluate the immune response in critical illness. It is striking that despite many years of studying infections, we still treat patients with severe infections the same as we did 30 years ago, with antimicrobials, fluids, and supportive care. The goal of my research is to bring the ideals of precision medicine to critical care. In particular, I am working to better quantify how the immune system responds to infections with the goal of being able to "read" the immune system and treat patients with the medications they need to successfully recover.

Emily Moore

BioDr. Emily Moore is a Clinical Instructor at Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. She is passionate about helping individuals navigate pain, find fulfillment, harness motivation and flourish in their lives.
Dr. Moore obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, from McGill University. Throughout her doctoral training, she conducted research exploring the role of psychosocial variables in pain-related disability as well as goal achievement. Dr. Moore subsequently completed a pain psychology internship at the Alan Edwards Pain Management Center in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Moore’s desire to build expertise in the biopsychosocial treatment of chronic pain prompted her to complete the Stanford Clinical Pain Psychology Fellowship. During fellowship, she received specialized training in the treatment of a wide range of chronic pain presentations, co-developed a group intervention for migraine and completed the Pain Reprocessing Therapy certification course.
Following her training, Dr. Moore established a private practice focused on serving individuals struggling to navigate co-occurring physical and mental health challenges. Concurrently, Dr. Moore collaborated on a number of research projects aimed to optimize psychological intervention for chronic pain in a group format. She was recently recruited to return to the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine as faculty.
Dr. Moore aims to combine research and clinical theory to develop individualized treatment plans that address unique patient needs, resonate with goals and support growth. Dr. Moore incorporates a number of evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT). -
Lindsay Scott Moore, MD

BioDr. Moore is a board-certified, fellowship-trained physician-researcher in otology, neurotology, and lateral skull base surgery with Stanford Health Care Ear Institute. She is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Otology-Neurotology, Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Moore specializes in surgery for disorders of the middle ear, inner ear, ear canal, facial nerve, and skull base for adults and children. She provides expert care for hearing loss and deafness, including cochlear implants for hearing loss. Other areas of expertise include vestibular schwannomas and other tumors of the lateral skull base, cerebrospinal fluid leaks (when membranes around the brain and spinal cord have a hole or tear), and cholesteatoma (noncancerous inner ear cysts). She also specializes in tympanic membrane (eardrum) perforations, glomus (rare and usually benign) skull base tumors (paragangliomas), and ear and temporal bone cancers.
Dr. Moore brings her clinical, surgical, and research expertise together to apply laboratory research to real-life patient care. Her research interests include optical and fluorescence molecular imaging (advanced, noninvasive imaging techniques) and applications in intraoperative surgical navigation to guide safe and effective resection of tumors. She also researches molecular characterization, used to show molecular characteristics of tissues and cells, with applications in targeted drug development. She applies her research to conditions including vestibular schwannoma (a noncancerous tumor on nerves connecting the ears and brain), cholesteatoma, skull base neoplasms (cancerous or noncancerous tumors), and hearing loss.
Additionally, Dr. Moore has a special interest in translational human clinical trials, including trial design and regulatory process navigation. Using her clinical trial experience, she works to apply novel investigations and treatment advances in her field. Her clinical research interests include treating and managing vestibular schwannoma, cholesteatoma, and other neoplasms of the ear and lateral skull base.
Dr. Moore has published her work in many peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Communications, Clinical Cancer Research, Annals of Surgery, Journal of Nuclear Medicine, and JAMA Otolaryngology — Head & Neck Surgery. She has given lectures and served on discussion panels at numerous national conferences and meetings. Her presentations have covered her work using novel molecular imaging techniques for surgery of vestibular schwannoma and head and neck cancers, clinical trials exploring therapies for vestibular schwannoma, and clinical trial development and implementation in neurotology.
Dr. Moore is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, American Neurotology Society, International Society for Fluorescence Guided Surgery, and the World Molecular Imaging Society.
