Donald Barr
Professor (Teaching) of Pediatrics (General Pediatrics), Emeritus
BioDonald Barr is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Stanford School of Medicine, and Professor by Courtesy in the Graduate School of Education. He teaches in the Undergraduate Program in Human Biology, where he helped to found Human Biology's curriculum in health policy. His research has studied the effect of the organizational structure of the U.S. medical care delivery system on the quality of primary care. He has also studied cultural and linguistic barriers to health care access for low-income patients, and factors associated with higher rates of attrition from pre-medical studies among minority students at Stanford and other universities. The fourth edition of his book, Introduction to U.S. Health Policy: The Organization, Financing, and Delivery of Health Care in America, was published in 2016. The third edition of his book, Health Disparities in the United States: Social Class, Race, Ethnicity and the Social Determinants of Health, was published in 2019. In June 2003 Dr. Barr was awarded the Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for Distinctive Contribution to Undergraduate Education at Stanford University. In 2006 he received the Miriam Aaron Roland Prize, which recognizes Stanford faculty who engage and involve students in integrating academic scholarship with significant and meaningful volunteer service to society.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research has involved the use of new technologies to create different types of patient-doctor transactions. I am also interested in how these new transactions impact clinical care processes. Current work includes the evaluation of a patient portal for children with cystic fibrosis, the use of telemedicine to bring asthma experts into the schools and the attitudes of teens and parents about the use of a secure patient portal for teens.

Ricky Y. Choi, MD, MPH

BioRicky Y. Choi, MD, MPH is Clinical Assistant Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine in the Division of General Pediatrics where he attends on the newborn nursery service and in outpatient clinic. He also leads digital health initiatives for the Division. In the past he has served in a number of clinical leadership positions including as the Department Head of Pediatrics at Asian Health Services Community Health Center in Oakland, CA. He has held multiple national physician leadership roles for many years including the Board of Directors for the National Physicians Alliance and as the founding Chair of the Immigrant Child Health Group of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a past Fellow of the California HealthCare Foundation Health Care Leadership Program.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Choi serves as the Head of Digital Health at Samsung Electronics America where he leads virtual care, strategy and strategic partnerships. Initially based out of Samsung's headquarters in South Korea and now in the Bay Area, Dr. Choi's expertise is in delivering improved clinical and financial outcomes by using consumer technologies to drive health engagement. -
Sharon DiPierro
Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics - General Pediatrics
BioDr. Sharon DiPierro is a pediatrician and mother of three who is devoted to improving child and community health. She has teamed up with the local health department and county parks to prescribe nature to improve physical, mental, and social wellness. She is working to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables for all families. She also enjoys teaching Stanford pediatric residents.
Since 2013, Dr. DiPierro has worked at Ravenswood Family Health Center, a federally qualified health center that serves mostly immigrant families in East Palo Alto. She completed her undergraduate and medical degrees at Brown University, and her pediatric training at UC Davis. -
Anna H Grummon

BioDr. Grummon is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and (by courtesy) Health Policy and the Director of the Stanford Food Policy Lab. Dr. Grummon is a behavioral scientist whose work seeks to identify and evaluate policies that encourage healthy eating and help children and their families live long, healthy lives. In her work, Dr. Grummon uses randomized trials, natural experiments, and simulation modeling to examine how food policies like warning labels, beverage taxes, and food assistance programs affect what we eat and how healthy we are. She also studies strategies for encouraging people to choose foods that are more environmentally sustainable. Dr. Grummon's program of research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and others. Her work has been published in leading medical and public health journals including JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, Science, and the American Journal of Public Health and received coverage in news outlets such as the Washington Post, NBC, NPR, and Forbes.
Dr. Grummon holds a PhD and MSPH in Health Behavior from the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health and a BA with Honors in Human Biology from Stanford. She completed her postdoctoral training at Harvard. -
Lawrence D. Hammer

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr Hammer has had a longstanding interest in factors influencing the development of childhood obesity. In particular, his studies have focused on early determinants of eating behavior, physical activity, and parenting behavior in relation to early feeding decisions and parental influences on diet and eating. With the current epidemic of child obesity and it's comorbidities, he is currently involved in the development of protocols for adolescent bariatric surgery.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Hart-Cooper's research focuses on youth provider barriers and education surrounding pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP). He founded the Virtual PrEP Program for Adolescents and Young Adults at Stanford to improve access to PrEP care for youth within California. In his current role, he advises health departments and health systems in creating youth-focused telehealth tools to improve youth access to PrEP.

She is a member of Stanford’s LongSHOT (Longitudinal Study of Handgun Ownership and Transfer) team and performs research about the impact of gun ownership on the risk of death for the gun owner and those who live with them.

Ryan Christopher Padrez

BioRyan is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University's Division of General Pediatrics. His primary clinical practices are at Gardner Packard Children's Health Center and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. In addition to his work at Stanford, Ryan also serves as the Medical Director for The Primary School, a new integrated health and education model that serves low income children and families in East Palo Alto, CA. His work and leadership focuses on the intersection and reform of primary pediatric care and early childhood education. He works to integrate systems and promote models that ensure high quality care is accessible to all children.
Ryan graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Human Biology and earned his MD at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He completed his pediatric residency at UCSF and participated in UCSF's Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved (PLUS) program. He went on to complete a chief resident year at The San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. -
Anisha I Patel

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Patel's research interests focus on reducing socioeconomic disparities in chronic diseases, including childhood obesity. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Patel has led numerous studies to encourage healthy beverage intake among children and adolescents. These studies include analyses of large national data sets, conduct of randomized controlled trials in schools, child care, and community settings to examine how interventions to increase children’s intake of water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages impact child health, and the evaluation of policy efforts to improve the healthfulness of beverages offered in schools and community settings.
Dr. Patel has a diverse funding portfolio ranging from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Healthy Eating Research Program, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Patel has presented her research to local, national and international audiences. She has also been recognized for her research with awards from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill School of Public Health. -
Maryann Abiodun Pitts, MD

BioDr. Pitts is a board-certified pediatrician. She has served as a clinical instructor and assistant clinical professor (affiliated) in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine.
She provides care to children and adolescents. Among the services she delivers are well check-ups, vaccinations, acute care, mental health support, and preventive care.
When patients meet with Dr. Pitts, it is important to her that they always feel respected and heard. If they are not ready or able to answer a question, or if they feel more at ease with a different approach to their appointment, she will always honor how they are feeling.
Dr. Pitts also works with the community to strengthen the systems that support healthy children and families. She has extensive experience collaborating with community-based organizations and government agencies. Her experience includes serving as a physician partner to the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Aware Initiative. This program develops methods to screen patients and create treatment plans designed to help them heal from the impacts of trauma and toxic stress.
Her leadership experience includes co-founding POWER: Pediatricians Organizing and Working to End Racism and developing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within health institutions. As an invited speaker at regional and national events, she has made many presentations to her peers. She also served as a health equity panelist for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

David Rehkopf

BioI am a social epidemiologist and serve as an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health and in the Department of Medicine in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health. I joined the faculty at Stanford School of Medicine in 2011.
I am Director of the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences. In this position, I am committed to making high-value data resources available to researchers across disciplines in order to better enable them to answer their most pressing clinical and population health questions.
My own research is focused on understanding the health implications of the myriad decisions that are made by corporations and governments every day - decisions that profoundly shape the social and economic worlds in which we live and work. While these changes are often invisible to us on a daily basis, these seemingly minor actions and decisions form structural nudges that can create better or worse health at a population level. My work demonstrates the health implications of corporate and governmental decisions that can give the public and policy makers evidence to support new strategies for promoting health and well-being. In all of his work, I have a focus on the implications of these exposures for health inequalities.
Since often policy and programmatic changes can take decades to influence health, my work also includes more basic research in understanding biological signals that may act as early warning signs of systemic disease, in particular accelerated aging. I examine how social and economic policy changes influence a range of early markers of disease and aging, with a particular recent focus on DNA methylation. I am supported by several grants from the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities to develop new more sensitive ways to understand the health implications of social and economic policy changes. -
Thomas Robinson

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Robinson originated the solution-oriented research paradigm and directs the Stanford Solutions Science Lab. He is known for his pioneering obesity prevention and treatment research, including the concept of stealth interventions. His research applies social cognitive models of behavior change to behavioral, social, environmental and policy interventions for children and families in real world settings, making the results relevant for informing clinical and public health practice and policy.

Kelly Corbett Sanders

BioDr. Kelly Sanders is a Stanford pediatrician and the Technical Lead of the Pandemic Response Initiative at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Institute for Global Health Sciences. She completed a Master of Science and Doctor of Medicine at the University of San Francisco, California, and pediatrics residency training at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University. Before pursuing a career as a physician, Dr. Sanders worked with the UCSF Global Health Group’s Malaria Elimination Initiative (MEI) on operational research projects with partner countries, as well as on developing communications and advocacy priorities with MEI and global partners. Previously, she worked with the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences, supporting the creation of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health and the UC Global Health Institute. In addition to her work at UCSF, Dr. Sanders practices clinically as a pediatrician at Stanford University, Palo Alto Medical Foundation and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI conduct interdisciplinary research to understand literacy as potentially modifiable lens for addressing maternal and child health disparities from birth through early adulthood. Applying mixed methods approaches (health-services, epidemiology, ethnography), I have been principal investigator on extramurally-funded research projects (NIH, PCORI, FDA) that aim to examine "natural experiments" in policy and/or to design, implement and test novel system-level interventions.

Chethan Sarabu
Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics - General Pediatrics
BioChethan Sarabu, MD trained in landscape architecture, pediatrics, and clinical informatics builds anastomoses across these fields to design healthier environments and systems. He is a clinical assistant professor of Pediatrics at Stanford Medicine, Director of Clinical Informatics at Sharecare. Across these roles, he works on designing and implementing a wide array of innovations ranging from patient portals, EHR transformation, virtual clinical trials, and A.I. driven digital biomarkers, to health information policy initiatives all through a lens of health equity and patient privacy.
He takes care of patients in a community based academic general pediatrics practice at the Gardner Packard Clinic, a Federally Qualified Health Center, where he has also assisted with EHR implementation and transition. He cares deeply on involving children in their own care and strongly focused on protecting the privacy and confidentiality of adolescents in an increasingly digital healthcare system. He helped to form and co-chair the national workgroup, Shift which has been working to promote equitable interoperability.
Drawing on his background in landscape architecture, Chethan implements and researches nature based health solutions in collaboration with the Stanford Natural Capital Project. Finally, further exploring the role of environment and human health, he is shaping the emergent field of climate health informatics. -

Maggi Smeal MD
Clinical Instructor, Pediatrics - General Pediatrics
BioMaggi Smeal MD does her clinical work at Gardner Packard Children's Health Care supervising Stanford residents and medical students in urgent care. She is co-director of the Families at the Border Program in Stanford's Center for Innovation in Global Health. Her humanitarian aid work is focused on helping asylum-seeking families in Tijuana who access care at the Refugee Health Alliance clinics ( RHA) . She leads a team of pediatricians, medical students, undergraduate students and community members to support RHA. The team has taught Helping Babies Breathe, a low-resource neonatal resuscitation program, to midwives in Tijuana. She has also brought a Pediatric Emergency Readiness course to providers at RHA clinics and supports the clinic through telemedicine. She is also a member of RHA's pediatric committee. Her global health work has also involved humanitarian aid in the Philippines and Peru. Locally she has worked on mobile health vans to support migrant farm workers and provided educational sessions for clients at LifeMoves Homeless Shelters. Her team's work with Families at the Border has been presented at the Consortium of Universities for Global Health National Conference and the group was awarded the Untold Global Health Story of 2020.

Piya Sorcar

BioDr. Piya Sorcar is the founder and CEO of TeachAids, an Adjunct Affiliate at Stanford’s School of Medicine, a Faculty Fellow at the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, and an Adjunct Lecturer at the Graduate School of Education. She leads a team of world experts in medicine, public health, and education to address some of the most pressing public health challenges.
TeachAids is an award-winning 501(c)(3) nonprofit social venture that creates breakthrough software addressing numerous persistent problems in health education around the world, including HIV/AIDS, concussion, and COVID-19. A pioneer in the development of infectious disease education, TeachAids HIV education software is used in 82 countries. In partnership with the US Olympic Committee’s National Governing Bodies, TeachAids has launched the CrashCourse concussion education product suite, which includes research-based applications available online as a standard video and in virtual reality. CoviDB is their third health education initiative, a community-edited platform organizing resources across a comprehensive set of topics relating to COVID-19 for free public use.
Sorcar received her Ph.D. in Learning Sciences and Technology Design and her M.A. in Education from Stanford University. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a B.A. in Economics, B.S. in Journalism, and B.S. in Information Systems. She has been an invited speaker at leading universities such as Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Tsinghua, and Yale, and is Chair of the Education Advisory Council for USA Football. MIT Technology Review named her to its TR35 list of the top 35 innovators in the world under 35 and she was the youngest recipient of Stanford’s Alumni Excellence in Education Award. -
