Pasqualina Colella
Basic Life Research Scientist, Pediatrics - Genetics
BioDr. Pasqualina Colella is a scientist with extensive expertise in cell therapy and gene therapy approaches for the treatment of inherited diseases. She is currently Research Scientist at Stanford University, where she is developing innovative cell therapy approaches to address neuropathic lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) using hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and genome editing.
Dr. Colella received her summa cum laude Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Naples Federico II (Italy) and her PhD in Human Genetics from The Open University (UK) at the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM, Italy). During her PhD, she focused on investigating AAV gene therapy for inherited blindness and developed novel strategies to effectively express large (> 5 kb) genes in the retina for treating Stargardt disease and Usher Syndrome type I B, both of which cause untreatable forms of blindness.
After the PhD, Dr. Colella secured prestigious Postdoctoral fellowships from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (EU) and Genethon (France). As Postdoc she developed innovative in vivo AAV gene therapy approaches based on liver gene transfer or multi-tissue gene expression to target the multi-organ manifestations of Pompe disease, a LSD that presents with neuromuscular impairment.
Dr. Colella is committed to researching innovative ways to combat genetic diseases and making a positive impact on the lives of patients. -
Jonathan Bryan Cooper-Sood
Clinical Instructor (Affiliated), Pediatrics - General Pediatrics
BioBoard certified in general pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine, Dr. J. Bryan Cooper-Sood joined Valley Children’s as a pediatric emergency physician in 2018. He has been the director of education for all rotating residents and advanced practice providers (APPs) in the emergency department since August of 2019. During his time in the Bay area, Dr. Cooper-Sood also worked at UCSF Mission Bay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and at Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in San Francisco as an attending physician.
Dr. Cooper-Sood has been involved with several emergency department initiatives, including quality improvement (QI) in the care of asthma, clinical practice guidelines for the evaluation of pediatric cervical spine injuries and in supervising Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) learners and mock codes for pediatric residents. He has also been a member of two Value-In-Pediatric (VIP) QI projects, including REVISE and BASiC. In addition, he has been published in peer reviewed journals such as Pediatric Emergency Care, Pediatric Emergency Medicine Practice and Head and Neck. He has also presented at conferences including the Pediatric Academic Society (PAS).
Dr. Cooper-Sood received his medical degree with honors from University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He did his residency in general pediatrics at UCSF and completed his fellowship at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital of Oakland.
