Joshua J. Turner
Lead Scientist, LCLS - Linac Coherent Light Source
BioJoshua Turner is a lead scientist at the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences, a joint institute between Stanford University and SLAC, as well as at the Linac Coherent Light Source, the world’s first x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) based at SLAC.
He received both a BS in Physics and a BA in Mathematics from UC Santa Barbara, a MA in Physics from Boston University, and a PhD in Physics from the University of Oregon. He moved to Stony Brook University, NY to work as a postdoctoral fellow, lecturer, and then adjunct assistant professor, before coming to Stanford.
Turner is a leader in ultra-fast x-ray studies, which he has applied to an array of scientific fields, from chemistry and materials physics to the study of plasmas found in large planets and hot astrophysical objects. His most recent work focuses on new modes of the XFEL which can be used to examine subtle fluctuations in materials using short, coherent x-ray pulses on new energy scales. This will advance the frontier in quantum materials through the observation of novel types of order found in exotic systems such as topological magnets, unconventional superconductors, and strongly spin-orbit coupled Mott insulators.
He is the recipient of the Department of Energy’s Early Career Award, a prestigious award granted to further the individual research programs of outstanding scientists with demonstrated successful research activities and potential for solving important problems to the U. S. government. He has published over 100 scientific articles with one-third of them in high-profile journals. -
Tim B van Driel
Lead Scientist, LCLS - Linac Coherent Light Source
BioTim van Driel is a Lead Scientist at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) within the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory with over a decade of experience as a subject matter expert. His research focuses on ultrafast time-resolved chemical dynamics, and he is currently leading the development of the LCLS-II-HE Condensed Phase Chemistry endstation. His efforts span experimental design, precision instrumentation and diagnostics, detector improvements, and advanced analysis frameworks to capture the non-equilibrium evolution of complex chemical systems. By directing "molecular movies," his work aims to visualize and control the fleeting dynamics of structure, spin, and charge that dictate performance from isolated molecules to energy and quantum materials. Dr. van Driel leads the deployment and development of the Liquid Jet Endstation (LJE) at LCLS, a specialized platform enabling femtosecond resolution measurements of photochemical and solvation processes.
Increasingly, his work focuses on the intersection of ultrafast multimodal X-ray science and artificial intelligence. Dr. van Driel is pioneering the integration of AI/ML into complex experimental workflows from dimensional reduction, improved signal to noise as well as automated pipelines and cross experiment scientific insights. He is also a key member of the ISAAC pathfinder project to autonomously guide and accelerate scientific discovery in catalysis across multiple national laboratories, seamlessly combining massive multimodal datasets with advanced theoretical models.
He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the Technical University of Denmark and his M.Sc. in Nanoscience from the University of Copenhagen. At SLAC, he is also deeply involved in pursuing new scientific directions and engaging with the larger community as the Secretary for the Peer Review Panel (PRP) for Chemistry, Soft Condensed Matter & Disordered Materials (CSD) and as an LCLS Culture Champion. -
Caterina Vernieri
Assistant Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics
BioCaterina Vernieri received her PhD on the CMS experiment from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy, in 2014 and then moved to Chicago for a postdoctoral fellowship at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. She joined SLAC in 2018 as a Panofsky Fellow and moved to the ATLAS experiment, and in 2022 she became Assistant Professor.
Throughout this time, she has been devoted to studying the Higgs boson using data from the LHC. She co-led the group in the CMS experiment studying the Higgs decay to b quarks at the time that this important decay process was finally discovered in the data. At SLAC, Caterina is working with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC with a focus on Higgs physics. She is responsible for the integration activities at SLAC of the new ATLAS Pixel Inner Tracker detector.
She was also co-convener of the group on Higgs boson properties in the US national study of the future of particle physics. -

Johannes Voss
Staff Scientist, Energy Sciences
BioJohannes Voss is Staff Scientist at the SUNCAT Center for Interface Science and Catalysis at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. He leads a research team focused on the atomic-level understanding and computational design of systems of relevance for renewable storage and conversion of energy. The team employs machine learning approaches to improve the predictive power of super computer simulations for chemical reactions with emphasis on heterogeneous catalysis.
