    Assistant Professor of Health Policy

    BioFernando Alarid-Escudero, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Health Policy at Stanford University School of Medicine. He obtained his Ph.D. in Health Decision Sciences from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. His research focuses on developing statistical and decision-analytic models to identify optimal prevention, control, and treatment policies and conducting cost-effectiveness analyses to address a wide range of public health problems. He has also developed novel methods to quantify the value of future research. Dr. Alarid-Escudero is a member of three cancers (colorectal [CRC], bladder, and gastric) of the Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network (CISNET) consortium, a group of investigators sponsored by the National Cancer Institute in the U.S. that uses simulation modeling to evaluate the impact of cancer control interventions (e.g., prevention, screening, and treatment) on population trends in incidence and mortality. Dr. Alarid-Escudero co-founded the Decision Analysis in R for Technologies in Health (DARTH) workgroup (http://darthworkgroup.com) and the Collaborative Network on Value of Information (ConVOI; https://www.convoi-group.org), international and multi-institutional collaborative efforts that develop transparent and open-source solutions to implement decision analysis and quantify the value of potential future investigation for health policy analysis. He received a BSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Metropolitan Autonomous University in Iztapalapa (UAM-I), and a Master’s in Economics from CIDE, both in Mexico.

    BioDr. Alas is a board-certified, fellowship-trained urogynecologist with Stanford Health Care Obstetrics & Gynecology. She is also a pelvic surgeon and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She specializes in minimally invasive urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery, including vaginal, laparoscopic, robotic and VNOTES approaches.

    Dr. Alas has expertise in treating pelvic organ prolapse, urinary and fecal incontinence, bladder pain, vaginal fistulas, mesh and non-mesh procedures as well as treating complications. In addition, she offers uterine preservation surgeries as well as non-surgical options. She is trained in a variety of in-office procedures, including urodynamics, office cystoscopy, bladder Botox injections, urethral injections, PTNS, and sacral neuromodulation tests.

    Dr. Alas is nationally recognized for her expertise and serves as a national oral board examiner for the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is passionate about teaching and has served as the associate fellowship director in Urogynecology in the past and currently supervises, teaches, and mentors medical students, residents, and fellows in urogynecology.

    Dr. Alas is actively involved in research and serves on the Society of Gynecological Surgeons Systematic Review Group. She has published her work in many peer-reviewed journals, including International Urogynecology Journal, Journal of Urology, and Obstetrics & Gynecology. She also serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research nationally and internationally.

    BioDr. Alexander is an advanced heart failure-trained cardiologist. He is also an Assistant Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Alexander specializes in the management of advanced heart failure and transplant cases, seeing a wide range of patients. He also has an active research laboratory, studying various forms of heart failure.

    Dr. Alexander has expertise in diagnosing and treating transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis, a critical yet underdiagnosed cause of heart failure among African Americans and the elderly. He is conducting extensive research to enhance our understanding of this condition, with grant support from the National Institutes of Health and American Heart Association, among other sources.

    Associate Professor of English

    BioMark Algee-Hewitt’s research combines literary criticism with digital and quantitative analyses of literature and other textual corpora. Although his work primarily focuses on the development and transmission of aesthetic and philosophic concepts during the long eighteenth-century in both Britain and Germany, his research interests also include other literary forms, such as poetry and the Gothic novel, and broadly reach from the eighteenth-century to contemporary literary practice. As director of the Stanford Literary Lab, he has led projects on a variety of topics, including the use of extra-disciplinary discourse in novels, the narratological theory of the short story, and science-fiction world building. In addition to these literary projects, he has also worked in collaboration with the OECD's Working Group on Bribery to explore the effectiveness of public writing as an enforcement strategy, with the Smithsonian Museum of American History on the history of American celebrity in newspapers, and with faculty in the school of law at Columbia University on court decisions regarding environmental policy.

    BioTayyeba K. Ali, MD, a Board Certified ophthalmologist, specializes in complex corneal disease and uveitis. She sees patients at Palo Alto Medical Foundation / Sutter Health in Sunnyvale, CA. Dr. Ali also works as a medical specialist on contract for Google.

    Prior to completing two fellowships in cornea, external disease, refractive surgery and uveitis at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, ranked #1 eye hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, Dr. Ali finished her ophthalmology residency at the Jones Eye Institute / UAMS. She earned her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine and completed her undergraduate training in English literature and creative writing from Agnes Scott College.

    Dr. Ali has received many academic and teaching awards including the Bascom Palmer Fellow of the Year Award and the Jone’s Eye Dean’s Faculty Award. She has delivered dozens of lectures on the national and international level and published numerous meeting abstracts and peer-reviewed journal articles.

    As a second generation American, Tayyeba finds herself dwelling on migrant and refugee stories, their need for ethnic and religious identity, and the repercussions of these journeys. She is keenly interested in international medicine, resident education, health technology and taking a closer look at the moral crossroads we face in healthcare. She is the Associated Director for Pegasus Physician Writers at Stanford as well as the Senior Fiction Editor for the medical literary magazine, The Pegasus Review; she has a particular affinity for colons (grammatically, not anatomically, speaking) and semicolons.

    BioDr. Leonardo Aliaga is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University and a medical education researcher. His scholarly focus lies in error-based learning strategies, adaptive expertise, and clinical reasoning. He is co-Principal Investigator of an AI-powered virtual patient simulator designed to accelerate diagnostic skill development through purposeful exposure to cognitive struggle and contrasting cases that sharpen pattern recognition. He has been invited to give international presentations and to lead an international symposium on error-based learning strategies. His research has been published in JAMA Network Open and focuses on designing instructional methods that harness errors as cognitive catalysts to deepen learning and develop adaptive expertise.

    Dr. Aliaga is currently pursuing a Master of Health Professions Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where his thesis aims to establish a framework to help educators implement error-based learning strategies across diverse medical education settings. He collaborates with colleagues at UC Davis, Wake Forest University, the University of Toronto, the University of Washington, and University Hospital Basel, and is building the FERN: the Failure in Education Research Network.

    Dr. Aliaga brings a unique background to his work, having trained in neurosurgery before transitioning to emergency medicine. That experience shaped how he thinks about expertise and the role of struggle in becoming a truly excellent physician. He also draws from his earlier career in fine arts and photography to shape his approach to teaching—grounded in visual clarity, storytelling, and helping learners “see” through the layers of clinical complexity. He’s known for delivering gritty, high-yield, and visually rich learning experiences that don’t steal the struggle but instead help residents turn missteps into mastery.

    BioDr. Daniel Aliseda graduated in Medicine from the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, and completed his residency in General Surgery at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra. During this time, he developed a strong interest in Hepatobiliopancreatic diseases and Liver Transplantation, which led him to pursue a PhD with international distinction. His research focused on developing models and strategies to improve survival in patients with liver and pancreatic neoplasm—one of which was nationally recognized as the best research project conducted by a surgical resident in Spain. As part of his academic training, he also completed a clinical and research stay at the Centre Hépato-Biliaire Paul Brousse in Paris. After finishing his residency, he joined the HPB and Liver Transplant Unit at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra as a Junior Attending Surgeon.

    BioChristopher Almond, MD, MPH is Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Cardiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine where he is a board-certified pediatric cardiologist at Stanford's Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. His clinical and research interests are focused on pediatric heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and heart transplantation. He completed his training in pediatrics, cardiology, and a senior fellowship in heart failure/transplant at Boston Children's Hospital before before appointment as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School/Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Almond completed his MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health with a focus on statistics and epidemiology (study design for rare diseases) followed by a Medical Device Fellowship at the FDA in the Division of Cardiovascular Devices at the Center for Devices. Dr. Almond moved to Stanford in 2014 where he currently serves as professor of pediatrics and directs the clinical research program within Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Therapies (PACT) Program. He also serves as Medical Director of the Children’s Heart Center Anticoagulation Management Program at Stanford (CHAMPS). Dr. Almond has a passion for collaborative research serving as PI for federally-funded multicenter clinical trials including the Berlin Heart ventricular assist device (VAD) FDA Trial, the TEAMMATE (everolimus for heart transplant) Trial, the TROLLEY (Cardiohelp ECMO/anticoagulation RCT in heart failure) Trial, the NHLBI PumpKIN (Jarvik 2015 LVAD) Trial, and the SPOT BIAS Trial, an FDA-funded trial to understand racial/pigment bias in commercial pulse oximeters.

    BioProf. Alonso is the founder and director of the Aerospace Design Laboratory (ADL) where he specializes in the development of high-fidelity computational design methodologies to enable the creation of realizable and efficient aerospace systems. Prof. Alonso’s research involves a large number of different manned and unmanned applications including transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic aircraft, helicopters, turbomachinery, and launch and re-entry vehicles. He is the author of over 200 technical publications on the topics of computational aircraft and spacecraft design, multi-disciplinary optimization, fundamental numerical methods, and high-performance parallel computing. Prof. Alonso is keenly interested in the development of an advanced curriculum for the training of future engineers and scientists and has participated actively in course-development activities in both the Aeronautics & Astronautics Department (particularly in the development of coursework for aircraft design, sustainable aviation, and UAS design and operation) and for the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME) at Stanford University. He was a member of the team that currently holds the world speed record for human powered vehicles over water. A student team led by Prof. Alonso also holds the altitude record for an unmanned electric vehicle under 5 lbs of mass.

As part of Stanford’s IGNITE faculty, Burt works with entrepreneurs in India and China to help them deliver compelling investor pitch presentations. He has worked with senior leaders in Stanford’s Athletic Department and several distinguished faculty members at Stanford’s School of Medicine.

    Burt also consults with entrepreneurs, executives and corporate teams outside of Stanford who are preparing for high-stakes and high-profile presentations. His coaching ranges from initial content strategy through delivery coaching and anxiety management.

    Prior to his work in the presentation coaching arena, Burt spent 12 years at Catchword Branding, a firm he co-founded in 1998. During his tenure there, he served as the head of strategy and business development.

    BioDr. Ruben Alvero is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford Medical School and is the Division Director of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. He is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Surgeons.

    Following undergraduate training at Harvard College (BA, Economics, 1980), Dr. Alvero received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland in 1986. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (1990) and a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the National Institutes of Health (NIH, 1995).

    Dr. Alvero was the Division Director for Infertility Services at the National Naval Medical Center (Bethesda) and Walter Reed Army Medical Center and faculty in the NIH-sponsored fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Dr. Alvero remained a reserve Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps until 2012 and during 27 years in the Army was mobilized several times for missions around the world, including service in Iraq, Kuwait, Mongolia, Germany and various locations in the United States.

    Dr. Alvero was Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Vice Chair for Education at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the Director of the Assisted Reproductive Technologies, and founding member of the Center for Surgical Innovation. Dr. Alvero was Residency Program Director in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Colorado. He was subsequently Division and Fellowship Director at Brown University.

    The Council in Residency Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology awarded him its National Faculty Award for Excellence three times. He has been NIH-funded, most recently as part of the Reproductive Medicine Network.

    Dr. Alvero is currently the Vice President of the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology, the national organization of fertility specialists and will take over as President in October 2020.

    Dr. Alvero’s clinical interests include IVF, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis and robotic surgery. Dr. Alvero’s research interests include non-invasive evaluation of embryo quality, cost-effectiveness analysis, and the role of critical thinking in medical education. A fluent Spanish-speaker, Dr. Alvero is also dedicated to improving the health of the Latinx community.

    Dr. Alvero is happiest on the water, whether sailing or singles rowing. He is also constantly attempting to improve his mastery of Latin American cuisine. Most of all, he loves spending time with his family.

    BioDr. Jurgis Alvikas was born in Lithuania and moved to Chicago as a teenager. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign with a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and earned his M.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha. He then completed his General Surgery residency and a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

    He is passionate about caring for patients with hepato-biliary and gastrointestinal malignancies and about mentoring surgical trainees. Outside of medicine, he enjoys running, reading, and spending time with his family.

After completing medical school at the University of California, San Diego, she returned to Stanford where she completed both her residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, as well as her fellowship in Otology/Neurotology and Skull base surgery. Clinically, Dr. Alyono specializes in adult and pediatric surgery for disorders of the middle ear, inner ear, ear canal, facial nerve, and skull base. This includes care for hearing loss, tympanic membrane perforations, cholesteatoma, glomus tumors, and vestibular schwannomas, among others. Her research interests lie in hearing in population health, quality of care, and technology in medicine.

    Dr. Alzawad’s research background is grounded in pediatric intensive care, with a growing focus on emergency care systems and innovation. She brings specialized expertise in psychometrics, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and healthcare data analysis, supported by advanced training in measurement, statistics, and nursing science. She previously served as a Nurse Scientist at Stanford Health Care, where she led interdisciplinary studies and mentored clinical teams in research and evaluation.     Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory studies how bacteria colonize our bodies for long periods of time, and how interactions between bacteria and the epithelial surfaces of the gastrointestinal tract and skin may lead to disease. Epithelial surfaces are the first barrier against infection, but they also where our bodies meet and co-evolve with the microbial world.. Several of our studies have focused on the epithelial junctions as a target for bacterial pathogens. The host epithelium uses its epithelial junctions to form a tight but dynamic barrier with an external surface that is inhospitable to microbial attachment, secretes anti-microbial compounds, and has a rapid rate of self-renewal. The balance in the microbe-epithelial relationship results in silent commensalism or symbiosis; an imbalance results in diseases ranging from acute bacterial invasive disease to chronic ulcers or carcinoma.

    Our laboratory has developed novel microscopy applications such as quantitative 3D confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, time-lapse imaging, microinjection and micromanipulation to visualize the interaction of pathogens with epithelial cells in culture and in animal and human tissues. Many of out studies focus on the gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori, but we have also expanded our investigations to include the intestinal pathogens Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica, and the skin pathogen and colonizer Staphylococcus aureus. I believe that elucidating how microbes communicate with and alter our epithelial cells at a molecular level will be important for finding novel therapeutic targets to control mucosal colonization and prevent invasive disease.

    Using this perspective, we have uncovered several novel concepts of how bacteria colonize and breach our epithelial surfaces. For example, we discovered that Helicobacter pylori target the intercellular junctions, and in particular that the virulence factor CagA affects junction assembly and cell polarity. This confers H. pylori the ability to extract nutrients and grow directly on the epithelial surface. We also found that these properties of CagA have consequences for cellular transformation of the epithelium. For instance, we showed that H. pylori affect the activity and state of epithelial stem cells in the stomach by colonizing the epithelial surface deep in the gastric glands. This gland-associated population is essential for pathological inflammation and hyperplasia in animal models, and confers significant colonization advantages to the bacteria. Our Listeria research uncovered a new mechanism and site where bacteria can breach the gastrointestinal epithelial barrier to invade. We found that Listeria find their receptor for invasion at sites of epithelial senescence, where the epithelial junctions undergo dynamic turnover. To study Salmonella and H. pylori we have developed a human organoid model to study their interactions with human gut epithelium in vitro. To study Staphylococcus aureus pathogenesis, we have developed methods to visualize infection at the scale of a single bacterial microcolony using an organoid culture system of human keratinocytes and fibroblasts that grow into a 3D skin-equivalent. We recently identified several proteins at the eptithelial junctions as host factors involved in the pathogenesis of one of Staphylococcus aureus major toxins.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Anand is a translational clinical researcher who pioneered research on the endocrine-metabolic stress responses of infants undergoing surgery and developed the first-ever scientific rationale for pain perception in early life. This provided a framework for newer methods of pain assessment, numerous clinical trials of analgesia/anesthesia in newborns, infants and older children. His research focus over the past 30+ years has contributed fundamental knowledge about pediatric pain/stress, long-term effects of pain in early life, management of pain, mechanisms for opioid tolerance and withdrawal. Current projects in his laboratory are focused on developing biomarkers for repetitive pain/stress in critically ill children and the mechanisms underlying sedative/anesthetic neurotoxicity in the immature brain. He designed and directed many randomized clinical trials (RCT), including the largest-ever pediatric analgesia trial studying morphine therapy in ventilated preterm neonates. He has extensive experience in clinical and translational research from participating in collaborative networks funded by NIMH, NINDS, or NICHD, a track-record of excellent collaboration across multiple disciplines, while achieving success with large research teams like the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN). He played a leadership roles in CANDLE (Condition Affecting Neuro-Development & Learning in Early infancy) and other activities of the Urban Child Institute and UT Neuroscience Institute. More recently, he led the NeoOpioid Consortium funded by the European Commission, which collected data from 243 NICUs in 18 European countries.

    BioDr. Anastasiou is a board-certified, fellowship-trained rheumatologist with the Stanford Health Care Immunology and Rheumatology Clinic. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Anastasiou specializes in diagnosing and treating patients with rheumatic diseases. She has a special interest in ankylosing spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

    Her scholarly work includes epidemiologic studies and clinical trials focused on improving safety and health outcomes for people with chronic rheumatic diseases. Dr. Anastasiou has served as an investigator and collaborator for clinical trials of new therapies to treat rheumatic disease. She is actively involved in medical education through developing and leading patient, medical student, resident, and fellow educational programs.

    BioProfessor Emeritus Hans C. Andersen applies statistical mechanics to develop theoretical understanding of the structure and dynamics of liquids and new computer simulation methods to aid in these studies.

    He was born in 1941 in Brooklyn, New York. He studied chemistry as an undergraduate, then physical chemistry as a doctoral candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (B.S. 1962, Ph.D. 1966). At MIT he first learned about using a combination of mathematical techniques and the ideas of statistical mechanics to investigate problems of chemical and physical interest. This has been the focus of his research ever since. He joined the Stanford Department of Chemistry as Assistant Professor in 1968, and became Professor of Chemistry in 1980. He was named David Mulvane Ehrsam and Edward Curtis Franklin Professor in Chemistry in 1994. Professor Andersen served as department chairman from 2002 through 2005. Among many honors, his work has been recognized in the Theoretical Chemistry Award and Hildebrand Award in Theoretical and Experimental Chemistry of Liquids from the American Chemical Society, as well as the Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching and Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching at Stanford. He has been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

    Professor Andersen’s research program has used both traditional statistical mechanical theory and molecular dynamics computer simulation. Early in his career, he was one of the developers of what has come to be known as the Weeks-Chandler-Andersen theory of liquids, which is a way of understanding the structure, thermodynamics, and dynamics of simple dense liquids. Later, he developed several new simulation techniques – now in common use – for exploring the behavior of liquids, such as simulation of a system under constant pressure and/or temperature. He used computer simulations of normal and supercooled liquids to study the temperature dependence of molecular motion in liquids, crystallization in supercooled liquids, and the structure of amorphous solids.

    Professor Andersen also developed and analyzed a class of simple lattice models, called facilitated kinetic Ising models, which were then widely used by others to provide insight into the dynamics of real liquids. He simulated simple models of rigid rod polymers to understand the dynamics of this type of material. More recently, in collaboration with Professor Greg Voth of the University of Chicago, he has applied statistical mechanical ideas to the development of coarse grained models of liquids and biomolecules. Such models can be used to simulate molecular systems on long time scales. He has also used mode coupling theory to describe and interpret experiments on rotational relaxation in supercooled liquids and nematogens, in collaboration with Professor Michael Fayer of the Stanford Chemistry Department.

His first book project, Racial Recursivity: Play, Race, and Neoliberalism in Contemporary Video Games, creates a ludic-textual framework for reading video games as racial cultural projects. His work has appeared in the Journal of Gaming & Virtual Worlds, The Comparatist, Popular Culture Review, and other outlets. He is currently is co-organizing a volume (with David Hall) that explores Japanese videogame perspectives on Western aesthetics. He received his PhD in English from Howard University in 2025.

Wallace Sterling Professor in Humanities) works in the history of late modern philosophy and has focused primarily on Kant and his influence on nineteenth century philosophy. He is the author of The Poverty of Conceptual Truth (OUP, 2015) and many articles on Kant, Nietzsche, and the neo-Kantian movement.     BioBorn and raised in Japan, Dr. Ando received an MD-PhD degree from the Aichi Medical University. After anesthesia training, Dr. Ando came to Stanford to pursue clinical and basic research experience. During his postdoctoral fellowship in Dr. Gaudilliere's laboratory, Dr. Ando worked on publication of “A next-generation single-cell technology (mass cytometry) to study the feto-maternal immune system,” a project designed to evaluate the immune response associated with preterm birth. In addition, Dr. Ando performs research in Obstetric Anesthesia, such as respiratory monitoring after cesarean sections and labor satisfaction, to obtain clinical research experience and to understand the key differences in medicine between the United States and Japan.
    After his postdoctoral fellowship, Dr. Ando has maintained his status as a researcher in Dr. Gaudilliere's laboratory, continuing work relating to pregnancy and preterm birth.
    Dr. Ando divides his efforts between laboratory research and the clinic.

    BioAs a stem cell biologist, I aim to understand the mechanisms through which stem cells differentiate into progressively specialized cell types and to harness this knowledge to artificially generate pure populations of desired cell types from stem cells. My work over the past ten years has centered on pluripotent stem cells (PSCs, which include embryonic and pluripotent stem cells), which can generate any of the hundreds of diverse cell types in the body. However, it has been notoriously challenging to guide PSCs to differentiate into a pure population of a given cell type. Current differentiation strategies typically generate heterogeneous cell populations unsuitable for basic research or clinical applications. To address this challenge, I mapped the cascade of branching lineage choices through which PSCs differentiate into various endodermal and mesodermal cell types. I then developed effective methods to differentiate PSCs into specific lineages by providing the extracellular signal(s) that specify a given lineage while inhibiting the signals that induce the alternate fate(s), enabling the generation of highly-pure human heart and bone (Loh & Chen et al., 2016; Cell) and liver (Loh & Ang et al., 2014; Cell Stem Cell) from PSCs. My laboratory currently focuses on differentiating human PSCs into liver progenitors (Ang et al., 2018; Cell Reports) and blood vessel cells (Ang et al., 2022; Cell).

    I earned my Ph.D. jointly from the University of Cambridge and A*STAR and was subsequently appointed as a Research Fellow and, later, a Senior Research Fellow at the Genome Institute of Singapore. I then moved my laboratory to Stanford University as a Siebel Investigator and Instructor at the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine. In 2024, I am jointly appointed in the Stanford Department of Urology and Stem Cell Institute as an Assistant Professor. My laboratory has been supported by the Stanford Maternal & Child Health Research Institute, California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Siebel Investigatorship, Additional Ventures, and other sources.

    BioMichael Angelo, MD PhD is a board-certified pathologist and assistant professor in the department of Pathology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Angelo is a leader in high dimensional imaging with expertise in tissue homeostasis, tumor immunology, and infectious disease. His lab has pioneered the construction and development of Multiplexed Ion Beam Imaging by time of flight (MIBI-TOF). MIBI-TOF uses secondary ion mass spectrometry and metal-tagged antibodies to achieve rapid, simultaneous imaging of dozens of proteins at subcellular resolution. In recognition of this achievement, Dr. Angelo received the NIH Director’s Early Independence award in 2014. His lab has since used this novel technology to discover previously unknown rule sets governing the spatial organization and cellular composition of immune, stromal, and tumor cells within the tumor microenvironment in triple negative breast cancer. These findings were found to be predictive of single cell expression of several immunotherapy drug targets and of 10-year overall survival. This effort has led to ongoing work aimed at elucidating structural mechanisms in the TME that promote recruitment of cancer associated fibroblasts, tumor associated macrophages, and extracellular matrix remodeling. Dr. Angelo is the recipient of the 2020 DOD Era of Hope Award and a principal investigator on multiple extramural awards from the National Cancer Institute, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Human Biomolecular Atlas (HuBMAP) initiative.
