    BioDr. Kristen K. Steenerson is a Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, specializing in vestibular neurology and neuro-otology. She directs clinical care within the Vestibular Neurology Clinic at the Stanford Ear Institute, where she focuses on the diagnosis and management of complex dizziness and vestibular disorders, including vestibular migraine, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, Ménière disease, bilateral vestibulopathy, and persistent postural-perceptual dizziness.

    Her academic program integrates translational research with clinician education to improve the diagnosis and treatment of vestibular disorders. Her research focuses on the development and validation of objective, technology-enabled tools to measure vestibular function in real-world settings. She leads initiatives evaluating wearable electro-oculography platforms for ambulatory nystagmus detection, as well as sensor-based systems using inertial measurement units to assess mobility, fall risk, and functional engagement. She has developed interdisciplinary curricula and clinical training pathways designed to expand vestibular expertise among neurologists, otolaryngologists, advanced practice providers, and trainees.

    Her scholarly work also includes clinical outcomes research and care delivery innovation, particularly in vestibular migraine and episodic vertigo disorders. She has led initiatives to standardize triage, referral pathways, and multidisciplinary care models for patients with dizziness, translating evidence into practical frameworks that improve access, diagnostic accuracy, and patient outcomes.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMarcia L. Stefanick, Ph.D is a Professor of Medicine Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and by courtesy, Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Stefanick’s research focuses on chronic disease prevention (particularly, heart disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and dementia) in both women and men. She is currently the Principal Investigator the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) Extension Study, having been the PI of the Stanford Clinical Center of the landmark WHI Clinical Trials and Observational Study since 1994 and Chair of the WHI Steering and Executive Committees from 1998-2011, as well as PI of the WHI Strong and Healthy (WHISH) Trial which is testing the hypothesis that a DHHS-based physical activity intervention, being delivered to a multi-ethnic cohort of about 24,000 WHI participants across the U.S., aged 68-99 when the trial started in 2015, will reduce major cardiovascular events over 8 years, compared to an equal number of “usual activity” controls. Dr. Stefanick is also PI of the Osteoporotic Study of Men (MrOS) which is continuing to conduct clinical assessments of bone and body composition in survivors of an original cohort of nearly 6000 men aged 65 and over in 2001. As founding Director of the Stanford Women’s Health and Sex Differences in Medicine (WHSDM, “wisdom”) Center, she plays a major role in promoting research and teaching on Sex and Gender in Human Physiology and Disease, Women’s Health and Queer Health and Medicine. Dr. Stefanick also plays major leadership roles at the Stanford School of Medicine, including as co-leader of the Population Sciences Program of the Stanford Cancer Institute, Stanford’s NCI-funded comprehensive cancer center.

    Dr. Stefanick obtained her B.A. in biology from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA (1974), then pursued her interest in hormone and sex difference research at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center, after which she obtained her PhD in Physiology at Stanford University, focusing on reproductive physiology and neuroendocrinology, with exercise physiology as a secondary focus. Her commitment to human research led to a post-doctoral fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, which has been her academic home for nearly 40 years.

    BioDr. Steffes is a pediatric pulmonologist and Assistant Professor in Pediatrics in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Stanford University. She has completed an advanced fellowship in Pulmonary Vascular Disease at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. Her clinical expertise focuses on rare pediatric lung diseases, with particular specialization in heritable forms of pulmonary vascular disease and developmental lung disorders.
    Dr. Steffes' research centers on understanding the cellular characteristics of occlusive neointimal lesions, the abnormal cells that obstruct pulmonary blood flow in pulmonary hypertension. Her work specifically examines the contribution of mesenchymal cell subsets to pediatric pulmonary vascular disease, delineating mechanisms within both pre- and post-capillary networks. By leveraging insights from developing human and diseased mouse lung, her research provides a mechanistic framework for understanding childhood-onset pulmonary vascular diseases with the ultimate goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets for pulmonary hypertension.

    BioDr. Steffner specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors in pediatric and adult patients. This includes primary bone and soft tissue sarcomas, locally active conditions such as giant cell tumor, aneurysmal bone cyst, and chondroblastoma, as well as impending and pathologic fractures from metastatic carcinoma, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma. He works closely with the multidisciplinary sarcoma group at the Stanford Cancer Center to provide coordinated, highly specialized treatment strategies.

    Research interests include circulating tumor DNA in bone and soft tissue sarcomas, local drug delivery, establishment of a national bone and soft tissue registry, and collaborative clinical studies on imaging and soft tissue management.

    -- Stanford Physician PRN Support Program, where having served as an initial member of the physician wellness committee, a peer support trainer, author of the peer support manual and program Director for several years, she has now stepped down to a peer supporter. In addition, for 8 years, up until January 2019, she served as the WellMD Newsletter editor, and was the creator and webmaster for the WellMD website. She has been a frequent speaker on topics of burnout and resilience for medical and community groups.

    -- Founder and Co-Chair of Stanford Family Abuse Prevention Council, teaching medical and community members about the health effects, recognition and management of partner and family abuse. She has created Stanford websites for domestic abuse, child abuse, elder abuse and human trafficking, as well as a monthly abuse research summary (see next section). In addition, she served for seven years as a Commissioner on the Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Council and has been a member of the LPCH Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Committee.

We have developed microarray technology for detecting autoantibodies to myelin proteins and lipids. We employ a diverse range of molecular and celluar approaches to trying to understand multiple sclerosis.

I am also involved in identifying outcome measures for use in clinical trials for the associated orthopedic manifestations.     BioDr. Stice served as an assistant professor and associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin and as a Senior Research Scientist at Oregon Research Institute before joining the faculty at Stanford University. His research focuses on identifying risk factors that predict onset of eating disorders, obesity, substance abuse, and depression to advance knowledge regarding etiologic processes, including the use of functional neural imaging. He also designs, evaluates, and disseminates prevention and treatment interventions for eating disorders, obesity, and depression. For instance, he developed a dissonance-based eating disorder prevention program that has been implemented with over 6 million young girls in 140 countries. He has published 335 articles in high-impact outlets, including Science, Psychological Bulletin, Archives of General Biological Psychiatry, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and Journal of Neuroscience.

    My first book, Court Poetry and the Culture of Learning in Japan (Harvard, 2026), charts the transformation of the poetry of the imperial court into a shared language for military and priestly elites, lower-ranking warriors, and eventually urban merchants.

    My second project, Meet the People Who Built Japan, investigates the emergence of a “culture of work” in early medieval manuscripts and artifacts.

    I welcome inquiries from students interested in classical through early modern Japanese literature through the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, as well as those pursuing transdisciplinary work through the program in Modern Thought and Literature, and grad makers in the humanities through Making and Creative Praxis.

    I advocate for a “maker mindset” in the humanities. My research is just as much about building and doing as about reading and writing. My courses involve hands-on experiences and are often co-taught with colleagues in Classics, English, Religion, History, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics.

    More broadly, I am interested in how we engage with the world through our senses and skills, exploring fields such as the tea ceremony, psychoanalysis, woodworking, sailing, olfactory cultures, technology, and design.

    Summary of Scientific Work:
    My early scientific research focused on the development of x-ray based surface techniques, especially surface EXAFS and NEXAFS, and their use for the determination of the geometric arrangement and bonding of atoms, molecules and thin organic films on surfaces. This work is summarized in my review article “SEXAFS: Everything you always wanted to know about SEXAFS but were afraid to ask” (in X-Ray Absorption: Principles, Applications, Techniques of EXAFS, SEXAFS and XANES, Edits. D. Koningsberger and R. Prins, Wiley, 1988) and my 1992 book “NEXAFS Spectroscopy” (Springer).

    My later research focused on magnetic materials and phenomena, in particular the study of magnetic thin films, interfaces and nanostructures, and their ultrafast dynamics by use of forefront x-ray techniques. This work forms the foundation of my 2006 book (with H. Siegmann) entitled “Magnetism: From Fundamentals to Nanoscale Dynamics” (Springer).

    With the advent of x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) around 2010 my research increasingly focused on the description of x-rays and their interactions with matter within modern quantum optics, leading to my 2023 book “The Nature of X-Rays and their Interactions with Matter”.
    In total I have written 3 books, 10 review articles in the form of book chapters and about 250 scientific Journal publications. I hold 5 patents and have given more than 150 invited talks at international scientific conferences, about 100 colloquia at Universities and Scientific Research Institutions, and 3 public lectures on the topic of magnetism and x-ray free electron lasers.

    BioKimberly Stone, MD is a board certified General Surgeon who specializes in breast surgical oncology and melanoma surgery. She treats all conditions related to breast health including: breast cancer, high risk prevention and screening, benign breast disease, and conditions related to lactation.

    Dr. Stone completed a breast surgical oncology fellowship at UCSF, where she trained in all aspects of breast surgical oncology, and melanoma surgery. Dr Stone performs all types of breast surgery including total skin and nipple sparing mastectomy, wireless lumpectomy, benign breast disease excisions and axillary surgery. She works closely with plastic and reconstructive surgeons to offer women the best possible cosmetic options and results following treatment. Dr Stone performs melanoma surgery including wide local excision, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and lymph node dissections for melanoma.

    Dr. Stone strives to deliver compassionate, patient-centered surgical care that is expert and evidence-based while at the same time customized to the unique needs of each patient. She believes that patient empowerment and education are at the heart of an excellent care team.

    Clinical Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology

    BioDr. Sarah Streett is a Clinical Professor of Medicine, the Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Education at Stanford, and she is passionate about taking care of people with IBD. She is a national expert in treating complex IBD and initiated a multi-disciplinary approach to care with colorectal surgery, pediatrics, and nutrition. In 2018 she received the Champion of Hope Award from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and serves on their National Scientific Advisory Committee. Her interests focus on fertility and pregnancy in people with IBD, developing precision approaches to IBD therapy, and the role that the microbiome and diet play in its pathogenesis. She is a primary investigator of the Stanford IBD Registry and has research projects focused on optimizing clinical outcomes in IBD, the role of the microbiota and diet in IBD and pregnancy, and applying new technologies to individualizing therapy for IBD. She is also the primary investigator on multiple industry-sponsored IBD trials.

    Teaching is a top priority for Dr. Streett who feels that mentoring fellows in the development of their careers is a privilege. She has held many national leadership roles in the American Gastroenterological Association, where she has been Chair of the Practice Management and Economics Committee, and currently serves on the Government Affairs Committee. She also an appointed member of the Gastrointestinal Drug Advisory Committee at the FDA. She has represented the interests of gastroenterologists and their patients on Capitol Hill numerous times. Dr. Streett believes strongly in a collaborative approach to give patients personalized care based on the latest therapies for the treatment of IBD and is committed to mentoring the next generation of experts in the field.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research aims to improve healthcare delivery in LMICs through evidence-based training, emergency care epidemiology, and strengthening maternal and child health via EMS. Partnering with Digital Medic and WHO, I evaluate training methods and develop guidance for health emergencies. I’ve contributed to prehospital care systems in India and other countries. Additionally, I explore EMS as access points for intimate partner violence victims and climate related health emergencies.

    BioMyra Strober is a labor economist and Professor Emerita at the School of Education at Stanford University. She is also Professor of Economics at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University (by courtesy). Myra’s research and consulting focus on gender issues at the workplace, work and family, and multidisciplinarity in higher education. She is the author of numerous articles on occupational segregation, women in the professions and management, the economics of childcare, feminist economics and the teaching of economics. Myra’s most recent book is a memoir, Sharing the Work: What My Family and Career Taught Me About Breaking Through (and Holding the Door Open for Others) 2016). She is also co-author, with Agnes Chan, of The Road Winds Uphill All the Way: Gender, Work, and Family in the United States and Japan (1999).

    Myra is currently teaching a course on work and family at the Graduate School of Business.

    Myra was the founding director of the Stanford Center for Research on Women (now the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research). She was also the first chair of the National Council for Research on Women, a consortium of about 65 U.S. centers for research on women. Now the Council has more than 100 member centers. Myra was President of the International Association for Feminist Economics, and Vice President of the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund (now Legal Momentum). She was an associate editor of Feminist Economics and a member of the Board of Trustees of Mills College.

    Myra has consulted with several corporations on improved utilization of women in management and on work-family issues. She has also been an expert witness in cases involving the valuation of work in the home, sex discrimination, and sexual harassment.

    At the School of Education, Myra was Director of the Joint Degree Program, a master’s program in which students receive both an MA in education and an MBA from the Graduate School of Business. She also served as the Chair of the Program in Administration and Policy Analysis, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Acting Dean. Myra was on leave from Stanford for two years as the Program Officer in Higher Education at Atlantic Philanthropic Services (now Atlantic Philanthropies).

    Myra holds a BS degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University, an MA in economics from Tufts University, and a Ph.D. in economics from MIT.

    BioDr Stuart is an Australian trained adult and pediatric neurosurgeon working as a Clinical Instructor in Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery under Professor Gary Steinberg.

    Dr Stuart completed medical school in Australia at James Cook University, followed by an Australian neurosurgical residency across multiple centres in the Binational Australian neurosurgical training program. Following residency he completed a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the Queensland Children's Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. Prior to Stanford he worked as an attending neurosurgeon at the Queensland Children's Hospital and Townsville University Hospital.

    BioAshley Styczynski, MD, MPH, is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases & Geographic Medicine and Global Health Faculty Fellow, and a Medical Officer in the International Infection and Control Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Styczynski's research interests are in infectious disease epidemiology, global health, emerging infections, and antimicrobial resistance. She holds an MPH from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and an MD from University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to coming to Stanford for her infectious disease fellowship, she spent two years as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer at the CDC. During her time as an EIS officer, Dr. Styczynski conducted outbreak investigations on Zika virus, vaccinia virus, and rabies. She is currently conducting research on antimicrobial resistance and interventions to reduce nosocomial infections within low-resource healthcare facilities globally.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy clinical pharmacology research is focused on investigating the impact of dynamic organ function on drug disposition and designing dosing strategies based on mathematical models that account for these changes in order to optimize safe medication administration in critically ill children.

    Research through the REVIVE Initiative for Resuscitation Excellence investigates the quality of resuscitation during cardiopulmonary arrest. Areas of focus include early identification during the no-flow state prior to CPR initiation and quality of CPR simulation education.

    BioJohn Su, MD, MA, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Associate Medical Director for the San Jose Fire Department. He is an emergency physician and EMS physician-scientist with fellowship training in Emergency Medical Services and an MA in Biostatistics from the University of California, Berkeley.

    Dr. Su’s academic work focuses on improving the quality, safety, and delivery of prehospital care, with particular attention to children and older adults. His research integrates artificial intelligence, clinical informatics, biostatistics, and implementation science to develop and evaluate clinical decision support tools, quality measurement strategies, and system-level interventions. By partnering with EMS agencies, health systems, and community organizations, he studies how these approaches can be integrated into routine practice, inform EMS policy, and strengthen systems of care across diverse populations and settings.

    In his role with the San Jose Fire Department, Dr. Su provides EMS medical direction, quality improvement, and clinician education. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Safe Passages, supporting community-based programs for children, youth, and families.

    BioMinhui Su, PhD is a postdoctoral fellow at the Neurology Department. She is investigating neuronal activity-regulated glioma growth, specifically how membrane depolarization regulates glioma growth in the tumor microenvironment.

    She obtained her PhD in Molecular Biology, with a focus on neuroimmunology, at the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) at Georg August University Göttingen, Germany. Her PhD research discovered that inflammation is an essential early step of myelin regeneration, and uncovered the roles of microglia (the resident immune cells of the central nervous system) in myelin damage response.

    She enjoys science, art and hiking in her free time.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research focuses on the association of weight and urinary incontinence (UI) in women and clinical trials to test strategies to improve outcomes in women’s genitourinary health. We have shown the independent association of weight and UI and the efficacy of weight loss to treat women with UI. I also conduct studies of epidemiology, economics and cost-effectiveness, and novel interventions for UI, sexual dysfunction, vaginal atrophy, pelvic organ prolapse and menopause symptoms.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research and scholarly interests have focused on tailoring antimicrobial prophylaxis in specific highly immunocompromised hosts depending on their specific infectious disease risks. I am interested in developing diagnostic algorithms and treatment protocols that will improve the quality of care in transplant and oncology patients.

    I also have an interest in training ID fellows in this very specialized area of patient care. To that end, we have started a new ICHS ID fellowship with a specialized curriculum and are developing supplemental educational materials to enhance this training, which can be implemented at other academic training centers.

    BioHari Subramonyam is an Assistant Professor (Research) at the Graduate School of Education and a Faculty Fellow at Stanford's Institute for Human-Centered AI. He is also a member of the HCI Group at Stanford. His research focuses on augmenting critical human tasks (such as learning, creativity, and sensemaking) with AI by incorporating principles from cognitive psychology. He also investigates support tools for multidisciplinary teams to co-design AI experiences. His work has received multiple best paper awards at top human-computer interaction conferences, including CHI and IUI.

    BioMy research group studies disasters to reduce the risk they pose. We approach this challenge by developing customized mathematical models that can be tested against observational data and are informed by community needs through a scientific co-production process. We intentionally work on extremes across different natural systems rather than focusing on one specific natural system to identify both commonalities in the physical processes driving extremes and in the best practices for mitigating risk at the community level. Our current research priorities include volcanic eruptions, ice-sheet instability, permafrost disintegration, induced seismicity and flood-risk mitigation. I was recently awarded the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers and the CAREER award from the National Science Foundation.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsInformation transfer at synapses mediates information processing in brain, and is impaired in many brain diseases. Thomas Südhof is interested in how synapses are formed, how presynaptic terminals release neurotransmitters at synapses, and how synapses become dysfunctional in diseases such as autism or Alzheimer's disease. To address these questions, Südhof's laboratory employs approaches ranging from biophysical studies to the electrophysiological and behavioral analyses of mutant mice.

    BioDr. Suffoletto is a primary care doctor at Stanford Internal Medicine Clinic. She is board certified in internal medicine.

    For each patient, Dr. Suffoletto prepares a care plan. Her goal is to help every individual achieve the best possible health and quality of life. Her care plans are customized, comprehensive, and compassionate.

    Patients praise Dr. Suffoletto‘s clinical skills and warm bedside manner. They value her ability to listen closely and communicate clearly.

    Her expertise and empathy are fundamental to her leadership as the medical director of the Stanford Coordinated Care (SCC) program. This program uses an interdisciplinary, team-based approach to enhance care for moderate- and high-risk patients throughout the Stanford Health Care system.

    Dr. Suffoletto also helps educate the internal medicine providers of the future. She is a clinical associate professor of primary care and population health in the Stanford Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care.

    To advance the field of internal medicine, she has published virtual patient cases, medical education curricula, and has given regional and national presentations on women’s health topics and medical education with a focus on simulation training.

    Prior to joining Stanford, she held positions as associate chief of staff for education and innovative learning and medical director of simulation education in the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and chief of staff at Butler VA Healthcare System in Pennsylvania.

    BioI am a physician-scientist and hematologist focused on clinical translation of T-cell biology. I received my MD from Kyushu University, and subsequently completed Residency Training at Toranomon Hospital, the largest transplant center in Japan. I continued my Hematology training at Kyushu University, where I qualified as a Board-certified specialist (2017) and supervisory hematologist (2021) by the Japanese Society of Hematology. For my PhD (2014-19), I studied expression profiles and histologic features of TCLs. I discovered distinct TCL clinical groups identified by infiltrating immune cell patterns in the microenvironment. Based on my dissertation work (Sugio, et al 2018 Blood Advances), I planned and conducted a Phase II trial of PD1 inhibition for relapsed/refractory TCL (UMIN000034499). I joined the Alizadeh lab at Stanford in 2021, where I am developing tools to analyze immune status using liquid biopsies.

    Dr. Sugiyama is passionate about treating patients who have gynecological malignancies or who have surgical specialty needs. She has worked both in the academic and community hospital settings since 2009.

    BioDr. Mariella Suleiman is a board-certified, fellowship-trained psychiatrist with Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Division of Medical Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Suleiman has special training in treating women's reproductive mental health conditions across the lifespan, including but not limited to perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and perimenopausal disorders. She also specializes in psychosomatic medicine, which focuses on appropriate psychological care for a range of reactions to illness. At Stanford Medicine, she works with the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service, which provides treatment recommendations to manage psychiatric conditions while patients are hospitalized.

    Dr. Suleiman’s research interests span advocacy to improve regulation of medications to treat mania in bipolar disorder (valproate) in the childbearing years, clinical approaches to treating agitation during pregnancy, and evidence-based management of bipolar disorder during and after pregnancy.
    Dr. Suleiman has published her research in peer-reviewed journals such as The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Academic Psychiatry, The Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders, and CNS Drugs. She has presented to her peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including those of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (ACLP), the American Association for Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training (AADPRT), and the Royal Health Awareness Society (RHAS) of Jordan.

    Dr. Suleiman is a member of the ACLP, the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the Jordan Medical Association (JMA), and the Northern California Psychiatric Society (NCPS).
