Dolan Bortner
Lecturer, Law Graduate Programs
BioDolan Bortner is a Teaching Fellow and Lecturer in Law in the LLM Program in Corporate Governance and Practice. He studies corporate law and bankruptcy. His current work examines how the objectives of these fields affect and are affected by government intervention in private markets, congressional legislation, and appellate review. His scholarship has been published or is forthcoming in the Iowa Law Review, the Yale Journal on Regulation, the peer-reviewed American Bankruptcy Law Journal, and the Georgetown Journal of International Law.
Before joining the CGP Program, Dolan was a member of the Restructuring Practice at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP and the General Practice at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. He also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jay S. Bybee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Dolan received his JD from Stanford Law School, where he was an articles editor on the Stanford Law Review. He received his AB with Honors in International Relations, magna cum laude, from Brown University. -
Amber Noelle Borucki
Clinical Associate Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Amber Borucki is an anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist whose focus is chronic pain management in children and adolescents/young adults. She focuses on reducing or managing pain from chronic conditions in children or pain that occurs after surgery. Dr. Borucki completed her medical degree at Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL. She attended anesthesia residency at the University of Chicago. She completed a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Boston Children's Hospital as well as a combined adult/pediatric pain medicine fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital, Brigham Women's Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Borucki worked for 5 years as a pediatric anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital from 8/2017-5/2023. She was the Director of the Pediatric Anesthesia Service at UCSF during this time. Dr. Borucki transitioned to Stanford Medicine Children's Health in May 2023 and her clinical duties include working in the Emeryville satellite pediatric pain clinic, pediatric operating room, and pediatric pain inpatient service. Dr. Borucki is the Director for Pediatric Pain Education at Stanford, and has partnered with the Adult Pain Medicine program at Stanford to develop an exciting new pediatric pain fellowship track spanning Stanford Health Care and Stanford Medicine Children's Health. She will be the program director of of the pediatric component of this track.
Notable accomplishments include developing and co-chairing the UCSF Benioff Transbay Pediatric Pain Management Committee, development of the pediatric establishment of an adolescent/young adult transitional pain clinic, and serving on the Bridge to One Bay project to standardize pain care across all UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital locations. Dr. Borucki also was instrumental in helping UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital obtain ChildKind designation, a prestigious designation for a hospital indicating that it prioritizes pediatric pain care. She also has been instrumental in the development of the new Pediatric Pain Medicine Fellowship Track at Stanford.
Dr. Borucki has recently collaborated with Dr. Lauren Harrison of the Biobehavioral Pediatric Pain laboratory and together they were awarded a Pediatric Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine Pilot Award to examine biopsychosocial demographic data around chronic pediatric back pain. Their study (PEDS-Back) is now enrolling patients through the pediatric pain medicine clinic.
Dr. Borucki has been a member of the medical advisory council for the Make a Wish Bay Area chapter for almost 10 years. She is currently serving as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine (SPPM) and also served as the program director for the 12th annual SPPM meeting. Dr. Borucki has also served on several committees through the American Society of Anesthesiologists, California Society of Anesthesiologists, and Women Innovators in Pain Medicine national society. Dr. Borucki served as an editorial board member for Paediatric and Neonatal Pain. -
Rupan Bose, MD, MB
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Cardiovascular Medicine
BioRupan Bose, MD, MB, is a Cardiologist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University. He specializes in Preventive Cardiology, with a particular focus on high-risk populations. His mission is to identify the underlying drivers of cardiovascular risk, and his clinic is focused on taking a data-driven approach to addressing each of those individual risk factors. He is also deeply involved in the intersection of medicine and technology, with a particular focus on leveraging emerging technologies and innovations to improve cardiovascular disease monitoring and outcomes.
Dr. Bose is a local Bay Area native. He completed his Medical Degree from the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He then completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at USC, followed by his Fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at Harbor-UCLA. With his interest in medicine and technology, he holds a Masters in Biotechnology (MB) with an emphasis on Bioinformatics from the University of Pennsylvania.
At Stanford, Dr. Bose serves in the Preventive Cardiology clinic and also the Stanford South Asian Translational Heart Initiative (SSATHI) clinic. He also serves as the Medical Director for the Inpatient Cardiology Services and the Medical Director of the Inpatient Cardiology (J7) Unit. Additionally, he serves on the Cardiology Consult service and Inpatient Cardiology service, where he supervises and teaches Fellows, Residents, and Medical Students from the Stanford University School of Medicine. -
Michael Boskin
Tully Friedman Professor of Economics and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research
BioMichael J. Boskin is Tully M. Friedman Professor of Economics and Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also Research Associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. He served as Chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) from 1989 to 1993. The independent Council for Excellence in Government rated Dr. Boskin’s CEA one of the five most respected agencies (out of one hundred) in the federal government. He chaired the highly influential blue-ribbon Commission on the Consumer Price Index, whose report has transformed the way government statistical agencies around the world measure inflation, GDP and productivity.
Advisor to governments and businesses globally, Dr. Boskin also serves on several corporate and philanthropic boards of directors. He is frequently sought as a public speaker on the economic outlook and evolving trends significant to business, national and international economic policy and the intersection of economics and geopolitics.
Dr. Boskin received his B.A. with highest honors and the Chancellor’s Award as outstanding undergraduate in 1967 from the University of California at Berkeley, where he also received his M.A. in 1968 and his Ph.D. in 1971, all in economics. In addition to Stanford and the University of California, he has taught at Harvard and Yale. He is the author of more than one hundred books and articles. He is internationally recognized for his research on world economic growth, tax and budget theory and policy, Social Security, U.S. saving and consumption patterns, and the implications of changing technology and demography on capital, labor, and product markets.
Dr. Boskin has received numerous professional awards and citations, including Stanford’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1988, the National Association of Business Economists’ Abramson Award for outstanding research and their Distinguished Fellow Award, the Medal of the President of the Italian Republic in 1991 for his contributions to global economic understanding, and the 1998 Adam Smith Prize for outstanding contributions to economics. -

Touria Boumehdi
Advanced Lecturer, Language Ctr
BioDr. Touria Boumehdi Tomasi serves on the faculty of the Language Center at Stanford University. She teaches all levels of undergraduate and graduate courses in Modern Standard Arabic and Spanish, including accelerated and intensive offerings. Also, in Spring 2016, she will teach a new course in the Department of Languages Cultures and Literatures (DLCL), “Aljamía language and literature through the study and analyze of aljamiado manuscripts.”
With over 31 years of professional and academic experiences, Dr. Boumehdi has worked as Co-Director of the Spanish Department at the University of Rabat and Professor of Spanish and Arabic in Spain and France at the University of Toulouse le Mirail, the Toulouse School of Business, IAAE Oviedo and ECLAP Valladolid. She completed her Doctorate with a joint Ph.D. and highest honors in Spanish and Arabic at the University of Toulouse, a Master’s degree in Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Mohammed V in Rabat, and an In-Depth Studies Diploma (DEA) including five post-undergraduate years of study in Oriental Languages, Literature, and Civilizations from the University of Paris III in New Sorbonne. Dr. Boumehdi also holds an MBA in International Marketing and Commerce from E S C Toulouse School of Business and hold 6 years experiences as a Export Manager in 3 French technology firms.
Included among her recent book and other publications are several articles and her doctoral dissertation published in Spain in 2012 on the topic of Aljamiado (15th and 16th century Spanish manuscripts written in Arabic) language and literature.

Robert Downey Boutin
Clinical Professor, Radiology
BioDr. Boutin works clinically as a musculoskeletal radiologist interpreting a broad array of diagnostic imaging examinations, most frequently MRI, CT, sonography, and radiography.
The clinical focus for Dr. Boutin is MRI and CT of joints, bones, and muscles, as well as adding value to routine radiology exams by translating advancements from fields of artificial intelligence and imaging informatics. These advancements include enhancing routine imaging exams to help promote physical function, quality of life, and healthspan in our patients. Because the worldwide population of people > 60 years of age is projected to double by 2050, there is a crucial need for improvements in the accurate and efficient management of derangements associated with biological aging, including osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and adiposity.
Dr. Boutin was introduced to orthopaedics at an early age by his father and older brother -- both orthopaedists. After earning undergraduate and graduate degrees at Stanford University, Dr. Boutin completed advanced fellowship training in Musculoskeletal Imaging at the University of California, San Diego, and worked on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. Core professional values include a commitment to outstanding quality, compassion, safety, and integrity.
Dr. Boutin is a leader in musculoskeletal imaging. He is the President of the Society of Academic Bone Radiologists and serves on the Appropriateness Criteria Panel for the American College of Radiology. He is an Assistant Editor at the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR), and recently served as the Chair of the Musculoskeletal Imaging Program Committee for the largest medical meeting in the world (RSNA).
He is a frequent invited lecturer for continuing medical education courses, such as those at the annual meetings of the Radiological Society of North America, the International Skeletal Society, and the American Roentgen Ray Society. He also lectures regularly at the international Orthopaedic Imaging course in Davos, Switzerland. -
Keith Bowen

BioFor 20+ years, I have worked in the fields of international relief, development, and conflict resolution, building capacity in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, South Africa, Rwanda, Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, as well as educating students in the U.S., Europe, and other countries who aspire to work in these fields.
Academics & Film
I've worked as an academic and filmmaker, creating educational documentaries on liberation movements around the world, which I've then used with university students in my classrooms. I've had several programs distributed by the Discovery Channel, which has been rewarding, but what has been especially remarkable to me is the response of my students. I've come to appreciate the power of narrative and immediacy of film to transform students' perceptions of the world and their place in it.
Learning Design
Along with an emphasis on narrative and immediacy, I've designed interactive programs that draw students into learning through exploration and discovery - with a dynamically shifting experience based on student choice and response. I've also designed learning programs featuring advanced multiplayer simulations with both live and online interaction.
Scale
I've taken this work to scale. In my work for the U.S. Government and international humanitarian organizations, I've designed courses that have been completed by tens of thousands of students and practitioners, not only at the State Department, USAID, relief agencies, and universities in the U.S., but also at comparable institutions in other countries, and even in internet cafes and refugee camps around the world. I've earned about a dozen awards for these efforts and have delivered presentations on them for the Under Secretary of State, the Senate Appropriations Committee, representatives of the the 57 countries of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the 35 countries of the Organization for American States, and others.
Virtual Exchange & "Wicked" Global Problems
I am continuing this work at Stanford. My focus now is designing media and technology programs to bring university students in the U.S. and other high-income countries into extended contact with counterpart students in fragile states and zones of conflict to address complex problems that no single country can solve on its own. As students work collaboratively to address these "wicked" problems, we measure advances in learning and shifts in attitude through qualitative and quantitative methods.
I have also launched and serve as Director for the Stanford Learning Design Challenge, which supports students across campus who seek to leverage research in the learning sciences, methodologies in human-centered design, and breakthroughs in emerging technology to change what’s possible in teaching and learning. https://edtech.stanford.edu/
This is an extraordinary time for those who design media and technology solutions for teaching and learning. Blended in smart combinations, especially with traditional in-person learning, the new tools we have are powerful:
- Visual narrative, through its expression in digital cinema
- Expanding and interconnecting networks of lifelong learners
- Complex human interaction, including multiplayer games and simulations
- Complex machine interaction, including generative AI, dynamically responsive to user needs
- Statistical data analysis, upon which to base informed, iterative human-centered design
- Worldwide electronic distribution, especially to inexpensive mobile devices
If we do this right, the world will be much better for it. -

Daniel L. Bowling, PhD
Assistant Professor (Research) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences)
BioDr. Bowling is Director of the Music, Brain & Health Lab at Stanford School of Medicine. His translational research harnesses the neural effects of music to develop personalized music-based treatments for health and wellness, with a particular focus on anxiety and depression in young adults. His approach integrates expertise in neuroscience, bioacoustics, music therapy, and psychiatry to apply insights from music's underlying biology to medicine.
Dr. Bowling earned his PhD in Neurobiology from Duke University School of Medicine and holds graduate certificates in Cognitive Neuroscience and Translational Medicine. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals including Science, PNAS, and Molecular Psychiatry. His research program has been supported by federal and private foundations including the National Institutes of Health, NeuroArts Blueprint, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. -
Sarah Bowling

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Bowling lab focuses on understanding lineage formation and tissue growth in mammalian development during normal and perturbed embryogenesis. We use a combination of next-generation tools and classical embryological approaches to uncover mechanisms of plasticity and resilience during mammalian embryo development, with the aim of using this knowledge to extend our understanding of regeneration and developmental diseases.

Scott D. Boyd, MD PhD

Stephen Boyd

BioStephen P. Boyd is the Samsung Professor of Engineering, and Professor of Electrical Engineering in the Information Systems Laboratory at Stanford University, and a member of the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering. His current research focus is on convex optimization applications in control, signal processing, machine learning, and finance.
Professor Boyd received an AB degree in Mathematics, summa cum laude, from Harvard University in 1980, and a PhD in EECS from U. C. Berkeley in 1985. In 1985 he joined Stanford's Electrical Engineering Department. He has held visiting Professor positions at Katholieke University (Leuven), McGill University (Montreal), Ecole Polytechnique Federale (Lausanne), Tsinghua University (Beijing), Universite Paul Sabatier (Toulouse), Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm), Kyoto University, Harbin Institute of Technology, NYU, MIT, UC Berkeley, CUHK-Shenzhen, and IMT Lucca. He holds honorary doctorates from Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, and Catholic University of Louvain (UCL).
Professor Boyd is the author of many research articles and four books: Introduction to Applied Linear Algebra: Vectors, Matrices, and Least-Squares (with Lieven Vandenberghe, 2018), Convex Optimization (with Lieven Vandenberghe, 2004), Linear Matrix Inequalities in System and Control Theory (with El Ghaoui, Feron, and Balakrishnan, 1994), and Linear Controller Design: Limits of Performance (with Craig Barratt, 1991). His group has produced many open source tools, including CVX (with Michael Grant), CVXPY (with Steven Diamond) and Convex.jl (with Madeleine Udell and others), widely used parser-solvers for convex optimization.
He has received many awards and honors for his research in control systems engineering and optimization, including an ONR Young Investigator Award, a Presidential Young Investigator Award, and the AACC Donald P. Eckman Award. In 2013, he received the IEEE Control Systems Award, given for outstanding contributions to control systems engineering, science, or technology. In 2012, Michael Grant and he were given the Mathematical Optimization Society's Beale-Orchard-Hays Award, for excellence in computational mathematical programming. In 2023, he was given the AACC Richard E. Bellman Control Heritage Award, the highest recognition of professional achievement for U.S. control systems engineers and scientists. In 2025, he was awarded the IFAC Nathaniel B. Nichols Medal.
He is a Fellow of the IEEE, SIAM, INFORMS, IFAC, and ACA, a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Control Systems Society, a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a foreign member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea. He has been invited to deliver more than 100 plenary and keynote lectures at major conferences in control, optimization, signal processing, and machine learning.
He has developed and taught many undergraduate and graduate courses, including Signals & Systems, Linear Dynamical Systems, Convex Optimization, and a recent undergraduate course on Matrix Methods. His graduate convex optimization course attracts around 300 students from more than 20 departments. In 1991 he received an ASSU Graduate Teaching Award, and in 1994 he received the Perrin Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching in the School of Engineering. In 2003, he received the AACC Ragazzini Education award, for contributions to control education. In 2016 he received the Walter J. Gores award, the highest award for teaching at Stanford University. In 2017 he received the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal, for a career of outstanding contributions to education in the fields of interest of IEEE, with citation "For inspirational education of students and researchers in the theory and application of optimization." -
Heather E Boynton
Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioHeather E Boynton is an emergency physician at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley, California and an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine in the Department of Primary Care and Population Health.
Dr. Boynton trained in emergency medicine at UC San Diego, where she served as chief resident. She attended medical school at Georgetown University and also has a master’s degree in International Security Studies from the School of Foreign Service. She completed her undergraduate studies at Princeton University.
As an emergency physician practicing in a rural, cross-border community she hopes to challenge and engage rotating students to provide patient-centered care in a resource-limited setting. -

Brian Brady
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Nephrology
BioDr. Brady is a fellowship-trained nephrologist with board certification in nephrology and in internal medicine. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology, at Stanford University School of Medicine.
He provides care at the Stanford Health Care Boswell Kidney Clinic as well as the Stanford Health Care Kidney Clinic in Emeryville.
Dr. Brady is particularly interested in the management of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). He also treats end-stage kidney disease, hypertension, kidney stones, glomerular disease and other kidney related conditions.
His research in value-based health care focuses on methods to improve care delivery for patients with CKD and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). He has received funding for his research from sources including the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Brady has published his research findings in JAMA Internal Medicine the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, and elsewhere.
He has presented invited talks on high-value care delivery to policy makers on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. He also has made presentations to his peers at national, regional, and local meetings of kidney disease specialists.
He has delivered lectures to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement National Forum, Satellite Healthcare Home Dialysis Academy, and other meetings. He has shared his insights in presentations to faculty and students in the Division of Nephrology at Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, China.

BioScott Brady is a founding partner at Innovation Endeavors, an early stage venture capital firm with offices in Palo Alto and New York City,. Previously Scott was a serial entrepreneur and co-founded three publicly traded tech companies.
In his role as an investor, Scott looks to partner with entrepreneurs who are tackling technically difficult challenges that are capital intensive and truly transformative. These companies leverage a proliferation of data and new computation and automation tools to run more experiments; learn and iterate faster, better, and cheaper; and speed up the growth cycle.
Scott has led Innovation Endeavors investments in multiple Stanford Graduate School of Business-founded companies, including Plenty, which is driving the evolution of the $3 trillion agriculture industry with indoor, vertical farms that are powered by machine learning, data science, and automation; Clear Metal, which is leveraging AI and machine learning to clean up disorganized, dirty data in the supply chain, making it easier to predict problems and manage complexity; and Citrine, which uses AI and massive data sets to accelerate materials discovery and product development.
Prior to joining Innovation Endeavors, Scott was the chief executive officer of Slice, where he was also a co-founder and board member. Prior to working at Slice, he was co- founder and chief executive officer of FiberTower, co-founder and chief technology officer of Clarus Corp., and co-founder and chief technology officer of SQLFinancials.
Scott is also a lecturer in management at Stanford GSB, where he teaches about management and new venture formation. Additionally, he serves on the school’s Advisory Council and is chairman of the advisory board for its MSx Program.
Scott earned his master’s in management from Stanford GSB and a bachelor’s in finance, with high honors, from the University of Florida. Scott holds multiple software and technology patents. -

BioProfessor Brandeau is the Coleman F. Fung Professor in the School of Engineering and a Professor of Health Policy (by Courtesy). Her research focuses on the development of applied mathematical and economic models to support health policy decisions. Her recent work has examined programs related to HIV and drug abuse prevention and treatment, control of the opioid epidemic, and responses to homelessness. She has served as Principal Investigator or Co-PI on a broad range of funded research projects.
She is a Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS) and a member of the Omega Rho International Honor Society for Operations Research and Management Science. From INFORMS she has received the President’s Award (recognizing important contributions to the welfare of society), the Pierskalla Prize (in 2001 and 2017, for research excellence in health care management science), the Philip McCord Morse Lectureship Award, the Saul Gass Expository Writing Award, and the Award for the Advancement of Women in Operations Research and the Management Sciences. She has also received the Award for Excellence in Application of Pharmacoeconomics and Health Outcomes Research from the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research, and a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, among other awards. Professor Brandeau earned a BS in Mathematics and an MS in Operations Research from MIT, and a PhD in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford. -

BioAltair Brandon-Salmon is a lecturer in the Civic, Liberal, and Global Education (COLLEGE) programme. He is an art historian writing a book on how bombsites shaped British art and architecture during the twentieth century. More broadly, he focuses on British and American art which is intertwined with violence, memory, and mortality.
His scholarship has been published by Art History, Art Journal, and the Oxford Art Journal, written exhibition catalogue essays for the Cantor Arts Center and the Museum Barberini, and given lectures at the Courtauld Institute of Art, the University of York, and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. His essays have appeared in America, Commonweal, Literary Review, and Public Seminar, while his fiction has been published by The Isis and the Oxford Review of Books. He is currently editing a volume for the Roxburghe Club on the eighteenth-century antiquarian, archaeologist, and Jacobite dissident James Byres.

Vivian Brates
Advanced Lecturer, Language Ctr
BioVivian Brates is an Advanced Lecturer in the Stanford Language Center, where she teaches Spanish language and culture courses with a particular emphasis on community-engaged learning. Since 2011, she has designed and taught a portfolio of courses that integrate advanced language learning with issues of migration, access to health care, and human rights through long-term partnerships with community organizations.
She believes that learning another language is ultimately about building understanding across cultures and seeing the world through other people's experiences and perspectives. In her community-engaged courses, students strengthen their language proficiency, intercultural competence, and communication skills by engaging directly with Spanish-speaking communities. Along the way, they gain a deeper understanding of the linguistic, cultural, and structural barriers that shape people's opportunities and experiences. Whether they pursue careers in medicine, law, education, engineering, business, research, or public service, her goal is to help students communicate thoughtfully across cultures and engage with others with empathy, humility, and respect.
Over the years, her courses have partnered with organizations including the International Institute of the Bay Area, the CARA Pro Bono Project, Al Otro Lado, Freedom for Immigrants, One Life (Una Vida) Counseling Services, UG2 campus service workers at Stanford, Sequoia High School's Newcomer Program, and Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto (CLSEPA).
Before joining Stanford, Vivian worked as a Human Rights Observer and Election Monitor with the United Nations and the Organization of American States in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Guatemala, and later as an advocate and lobbyist in Washington, D.C. Those experiences continue to shape her teaching and her commitment to connecting academic learning with meaningful community engagement.

BioDr. Braunschweig is a board-certified family medicine physician. She provides care for the entire family and welcomes patients of all ages from newborns to older adults. Her goal is to help every individual achieve the best possible health and quality of life.
Her special interests include children’s health, women's health and mental health. She is the Director of Child Health for the Division of Primary Care and Population Health, within the Department of Medicine, at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Braunschweig grew up in San Jose, CA. Prior to medical school, Dr. Braunschweig studied music and earned a PhD in musicology from UC Berkeley. Her interest in women’s health led her to volunteer as a birth doula at San Francisco General Hospital. There, she became passionate about maternal and child health, and was inspired to become a physician.
Outside of her clinical practice, she enjoys spending time with her family, plant-based cooking, swimming and exploring the beautiful Bay Area. -

Martin Breidenbach

BioI have worked for more than 45 years in experimental particle physics, often in developing new kinds of electronics and instruments critical to the detectors that enable the physics experiments of interest. In 1965 through 1971, I was involved in the electron scattering program at SLAC. The deep inelastic experiments that discovered the scaling and point like structure in the nucleon, later interpreted as quarks, was my Ph.D. thesis. I then spent a year at CERN, mostly doing an experiment on minimum bias behavior of proton-proton scattering at the newly operating Intersecting Storage Rings. Despite intentions to stay longer at CERN, I was persuaded by Professor Richter to return to SLAC and join his SPEAR storage ring group. In the 1974 “November Revolution”, we discovered the and ’ particles, soon interpreted as bound states of charm-anti-charm quarks, which caused essentially complete acceptance of the quark model as real. Another critical discovery at SPEAR was the lepton, leading to the third family of the Standard Model.
Subsequently Professor Charles Baltay and I were co-spokesmen of the SLD, a comprehensive large detector for the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC), where we did Z physics, particularly polarization asymmetries possible because of the SLC polarized electron beam which led to a (correct) prediction of the Higgs mass, and precision b physics with a 300 MPixel CCD vertex detector.
I am now involved in the design of a detector for the International Linear Collider which may be built in Japan, which has led to substantial involvement in Si detector sensors and associated readout ASIC’s. I believe we have developed the first wafer scale sensors with on sensor traces leading to a relative small area “readout system on a chip” that delivers processed digital signals to a DAQ.
I also work on a search for neutrinoless double beta decay (02) in 136 Xe. The 02 experiment utilizes a liquid xenon TPC requiring ultra-low background materials, techniques, and locations, which was an education into rather different experimental techniques from collider detectors.
I am working on a new concept for an e+e- linear collider called C^3 for the Cool Copper Collider. The Cool Copper Collider (C3) is an advanced concept for a high energy e+e- linear collider. It is based on a new SLAC technology that dramatically improves efficiency and breakdown rate. C3 uses distributed power to each cavity from a common RF manifold and operates at cryogenic temperatures (LN2, ~80K). This makes it robust at high gradient: 120~MeV/m.
C3 is a promising option for a next-generation e+e- collider. It has the potential to reach energies of up to 1 TeV, which would allow it to study the properties of particles that are difficult to access with current experiments. C3 is also relatively affordable, which makes it a more viable option than some of the other proposed linear colliders.
Finally, these recent experiences have led to exploratory collaborative efforts in neuroscience, where we believe our SLAC expertise in sensors and electronics could be rather synergistic with Stanford efforts in tACs and in neural recording probes. -
Christiane Brems, PhD, ABPP, ERYT500, C-IAYT
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioChristiane Brems, PhD, ABPP, RYT-500, C-IAYT, is the Founding Director of YogaX, a Special Initiative in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science. She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Oklahoma State University in 1987. Dr. Brems is licensed as a psychologist in several US states and board-certified as a clinical psychologist by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). She is a registered yoga teacher (E-RYT500) and certified C-IAYT yoga therapist. She is also certified in Interactive Guided Imagery.
She began her career in academia at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She then served on faculty at the University of Alaska Anchorage for 23 years, where she held a variety of leadership positions, including as (Co-Founding) Director of the Center for Behavioral Health Research and Services, (Co-Founding) Director of the PhD Program in Clinical-Community Psychology, and Interim Vice Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School. Most recently, she served for nearly six years as Dean and Professor of the School of Graduate Psychology (SGP) at Pacific University Oregon.
Dr. Brems has worked for decades as an applied researcher and clinical practitioner with particular interests in health promotion, rural healthcare delivery, and all things yoga. Her work has been funded by grants and contracts from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, and local and State of Alaska funding sources. She has shared her work extensively in over 120 peer-reviewed journal articles, 100s of technical reports, and several books, including the Comprehensive Guide to Child Psychotherapy (now in its 4th edition), Dealing with Challenges in Psychotherapy and Counseling, Basic Skills in Counseling and Psychotherapy, and others. Dr. Brems is committed to excellence in and integration of clinical services, teaching, consultation, and research.
Dr. Brems has integrated yoga, mindfulness, complementary interventions, and self-care strategies in her work as a consultant, author, dean, teacher, researcher, mentor, supervisor, colleague, and service provider. She values these practices as crucial aspects of day-to-day professional and personal life and seeks to enhance access to them for all who can benefit. -
Andrew Michael Brennan Jr
Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics - Cardiology
BioDr. Andrew Brennan is a pediatric cardiologist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. He specializes in cardiac imaging, including fetal echocardiograms, transthoracic echocardiograms, and transesophageal echocardiograms, and provides care to patients and families in the hospital in the acute care cardiology unit.
He completed pediatric residency, pediatric cardiology fellowship, and pediatric cardiology advanced imaging training at Stanford University. Previously he graduated from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and attended Northeastern University where he received his B.S. in Health Science.
His research interests include evaluating the use of echocardiographic indices, such as speckle-tracking strain analysis, in clinical outcome studies in congenital heart disease and pulmonary venous anomalies. -
Megan Brennan
Advanced Lecturer, Chemistry
BioDr. Megan Brennan's interests include the development of organic chemistry lab courses that give students hands-on opportunities to explore chemistry while reinforcing and building upon concepts learned in lecture classes. She aims for her labs to bring chemistry to life, and to afford students a chance to have fun and experience a taste of scientific discovery.
While studying chemistry at Lafayette College (B.S. 2002), Dr. Brennan worked on the preparation of triazaphenanthrenes and the Oxa–Pictet–Spengler reaction of 1-(3-furyl)alkan-2-ols. She completed her doctoral work at Stanford (Ph.D. 2008), conducting her thesis research in palladium asymmetric allylic alkylation under the advisement of Professor Barry Trost. During her postdoctoral research with Professor Scott Miller at Yale University, she investigated the use of peptides containing a thiazole side chain for use in acyl anion chemistry. She joined the teaching staff at University of California, Berkeley in 2010 before coming returning to Stanford in 2011 to spearhead the development of a new summer organic chemistry sequence, a comprehensive course designed for pre-meds, offering an entire year of organic chemistry in nine weeks.
Dr. Brennan also acts as the liaison to the chemistry majors, to promote events with faculty in both the academic and social aspect: providing an environment that allows students to be comfortable and able to learn, while helping them take advantage of every opportunity that Stanford offers.
Dr. Brennan's current research is in the development classroom experiments that bring cutting edge industrial and academic research into the undergraduate laboratory experience. -
Keri Brenner
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioKeri Brenner, MD, MPA is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. As a palliative care physician and psychiatrist, her clinical work includes inpatient palliative care consultations at Stanford. She was inspired to pursue palliative care after serving at Mother Teresa’s Home for the Dying in Kolkata, India on multiple occasions. Dr. Brenner’s scholarly interests and research focus on the psychological elements of palliative care, specifically psychodynamic and existential issues in patients with serious illness. Dr. Brenner completed her medical degree at Yale School of Medicine, where she received honors for her thesis on the phenomenology of suffering with terminal illness. She also has a Master in Public Administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School. Dr. Brenner completed adult psychiatry residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and palliative care fellowship at Harvard. She served on the University of Notre Dame Board of Trustees (2005-2008), and was awarded funding through Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (2019). In her personal life, Dr. Brenner enjoys the beautiful outdoors of Northern California with her husband and four young children.

Robert Brenner

BioR.B. Brenner is a Lecturer in the Department of Communication. He returned to Stanford in 2018 after four years at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a tenured full professor and director of the School of Journalism. He had been a Stanford Lecturer from 2010 to 2014.
His teaching is informed by a three-decade career as a reporter and editor. He held several prominent editing positions at The Washington Post, including Sunday Editor and Metro Editor. He was one of the primary editors of The Post’s coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings, which was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2008, and played a leadership role in merging the digital and print newsrooms.
He has been a consultant for two journalism-themed films: “The Post” (2017) and “State of Play” (2009).

BioMark Brongersma is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University. He received his PhD in Materials Science from the FOM Institute in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 1998. From 1998-2001 he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the California Institute of Technology. During this time, he coined the term “Plasmonics” for a new device technology that exploits the unique optical properties of nanoscale metallic structures to route and manipulate light at the nanoscale. His current research is directed towards the development and physical analysis of nanostructured materials that find application in nanoscale electronic and photonic devices. Brongersma received a National Science Foundation Career Award, the Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, the International Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in the Physical Sciences (Physics) for his work on plasmonics, and is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, the SPIE, and the American Physical Society.

We have developed novel computerized technology to measure fine, limb and postural movement. With these we are measuring local field potentials in basal ganglia nuclei in patients with Parkinson's disease and dystonian and correlating brain signalling with motor behavior.

BioDr. Nicole Brooks is board certified in psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. She specializes in the treatment of mood disorders and serves as a forensic expert in criminal and civil cases. In her role as Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Brooks provides outpatient care in the depression and bipolar disorder clinics. She also serves as the Associate Program Director of the forensic psychiatry fellowship.

Aaron Diamond Brown

Collections Associate, ArchaeologyBioAaron Brown is an archaeologist specializing in Roman and Italic material culture with particular interests in ancient foodways (i.e. the practices and beliefs surrounding the production and consumption of food and drink), craft production and the life histories of artifacts, the Roman household, and the lived experiences of the non-elite. Much of his research seeks to recover the daily realities of ancient persons’ lives in order to better understand large-scale social structures and how they changed over time. His current book project is a social and material history of cooking in the Roman Empire.
He serves as the assistant director of the Pompeii Artifact Life History Project (PALHIP) and a ceramic specialist for the Pompeii I.14 project. He has also worked at the following sites in Italy: Rofalco, Cetamura del Chianti, Cerveteri, Morgantina, and Oplontis. -
Akemi Laura Brown
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Akemi Brown (she/her) is board-certified Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine physician who practices at the Stanford Internal Medicine Clinic in Palo Alto.
She graduated summa cum laude from UC San Diego with a B.S. in Human Biology. She then attended the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program where she received her MS in Health and Medical Sciences from UC Berkeley School of Public Health and her MD from UCSF. She completed her internal medicine residency in the UCSF Primary Care General Internal Medicine (UCPC-GIM) track with a Health Professions Education pathway. Following residency, she completed the UCSF Division of General Internal Medicine Clinician Educator fellowship with Area of Concentration in Weight Management.
Dr. Brown is a Bay Area native who is passionate about providing patient centered care to patients in both primary care and weight management. She is also an active clinician educator who enjoys teaching medical students and residents as well as developing educational curriculum. Her work has spanned research into health disparities, interprofessional program development, and quality improvement for cervical cancer screenings. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Brown's current research examines issues of stress, culture, and language. His work examines how science is taught is ways that may alienate urban students due to the approach to language instruction. This work includes experimental work involving technology based education and inner city teaching practices.
