    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Josh Makower is the Boston Scientific Applied Bioengineering Professor of Medicine and of Bioengineering at the Stanford University Schools of Medicine and Engineering and the Director of the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, the program he co-founded with Dr. Paul Yock twenty years ago. Josh helped create the fundamental structure of the Center’s core curriculum and is the chief architect of what is now called “The Biodesign Process.” Over the past 20 years since Josh and Paul founded Biodesign, this curriculum and the associated textbook has been used at Stanford and across the world to train hundreds of thousands of students, faculty and industry leaders on the Biodesign process towards the advancement of medical innovation for the improvement of patient care. Josh has practiced these same techniques directly as the Founder & Executive Chairman of ExploraMed, a medical device incubator, creating 9 companies since 1995. Transactions from the ExploraMed portfolio include NeoTract, acquired by Teleflex, Acclarent, acquired by J&J, EndoMatrix, acquired by C.R. Bard & TransVascular, acquired by Medtronic. Other ExploraMed/NEA ventures include Moximed, NC8 and Willow. Josh is also a Special Partner at NEA where he supports the healthcare team and medtech/healthtech investing practice. Josh serves on the boards of Allay Therapeutics, Revelle Aesthetics, Setpoint Medical, DOTS Technologies, Eargo, ExploraMed, Intrinsic Therapeutics, Moximed, Willow and Coravin.     BioMaryam S. Makowski, PhD, FACN, CNS, NBC-HWC, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Stanford University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Associate Director of Scholarship and Health Promotion for Stanford Medicine’s WellMD & WellPhD. As a medical nutrition scientist, Certified Nutrition Specialist, and National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, Dr. Makowski provides nutrition consultations and well-being coaching to Stanford School of Medicine faculty, as well as Stanford Medicine residents and fellows through the WellConnect Program. She also serves patients of the Lifestyle Psychiatry Clinic and provides group nutrition coaching and education to Geriatric Psychiatry patients within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr.Makowski is a member of the Well-Being Advisory Committee in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

    Dr. Makowski's research focuses on identifying nutritional strategies to minimize physician fatigue, stress, and sleep-related impairment. In her coaching, she employs evidence-based strategies to optimize the well-being and performance of her clients. She has delivered over 100 lectures, grand rounds, seminars, and webinars to thousands of physicians and physician trainees worldwide.

    In her coaching, Dr. Makowski incorporates a Whole Person Health approach by addressing the interconnected dimensions of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being, empowering clients to achieve a balanced and fulfilling life through personalized strategies and holistic support. In recognition of her contributions, she received the 2024 Annual Chairman's Award for Clinical Innovation and Service in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    She earned her master's and doctoral degrees in clinical nutrition, nutritional epidemiology, and medical science from the University of Toronto. Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Makowski worked as a scientific associate at Toronto General Hospital-University Health Network and served as an advisor to Air Canada rouge pilots and cabin crew on fatigue management. Throughout her career, she has authored highly cited scientific papers related to nutrition and well-being, making significant contributions to the field.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research focuses on epidemiologic aspects of viral vaccines and perinatal HIV infection. This includes the molecular epidemiology of factors affecting the immunogenicity of oral polio vaccine (OPV) in developing areas of the world, and now the epidemiology of transmission and circulation of vaccine derived polioviruses in order to assist in global eradication of polio. I also work in development of methods to prevent breastfeeding transmission of HIV in Africa.

    BioLiisa H. Malkki is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Stanford University. Her research interests include: the politics of nationalism, internationalism, cosmopolitanism, and human rights discourses as transnational cultural forms; the social production of historical memory and the uses of history; political violence, exile, and displacement; the ethics and politics of humanitarian aid; child research; and visual culture. Her field research in Tanzania exlored the ways in which political violence and exile may produce transformations of historical consciousness and national identity among displaced people. This project resulted in Purity and Exile: Violence, Memory, and National Cosmology Among Hutu Refugees in Tanzania (University of Chicago Press, 1995). In another project, Malkki explored how Hutu exiles from Burundi and Rwanda, who found asylum in Montreal, Canada, imagined scenarios of the future for themselves and their countries in the aftermath of genocide in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. Malkki’s most recent book, Improvising Theory: Process and Temporality in Ethnographic Fieldwork (with Allaine Cerwonka) was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2007. Her most recent book-length project (based on fieldwork from 1995 to the present) examines the changing interrelationships among humanitarian interventions, internationalism, professionalism, affect, and neutrality in the work of the Finnish Red Cross in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Maloney is nationally and internationally recognized for his contributions to the improved understanding of the causes of failure of surgical joint replacement. For example; he established a critical link between polyethylene wear debris and bony erosion, with resulting significant changes in the materials and design strategies of joint replacement surgery. More recently, he has shown that wear debris particles are coated in vivo with human proteins, such as albumin; this observation has notably improved the validity of in vitro investigation in this area. His research in the area of joint replacement has twice won awards from the Hip Society. Dr. Maloney is currently the President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has served on numerous AAOS committees, including the Council on Education. Previously, he was chair of the American Joint Replacement Registry Board of Directors (AJRR), and on the board of directors for the Knee Society, the Hip Society, the Western Orthopaedic Association, and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS). Dr. Maloney is a past president of the Hip Society. He has been a Visiting Professor to numerous universities and institutions throughout the United States and Asia.

    Professor of Ophthalmology

    BioEdward E. Manche, MD is Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Service at Stanford University School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed residency training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry at New Jersey where he served as Chief Resident. He completed a two-year fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.

    Dr. Manche is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and received its Achievement Award in 2003 and its Senior Achievement Award in 2014. He was elected to active membership in the American Ophthalmological Society in 2011, and is recognized in Best Doctors in America and Guide to America's Top Physicians. He serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Ophthalmology, Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and Journal of Refractive Surgery.

    He lectures widely on topics in cornea and refractive surgery and has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles and 30 book chapters.

    BioLisa Mandle (she/her) is Director of Science-Software Integration and a Lead Scientist with the Natural Capital Project. She works to make ecosystem service science accessible and actionable through NatCap’s data and software, overseeing our software team. Her research sheds light on how land management and infrastructure development affect ecosystem services, social equity, and human health. Lisa works with governments, multi-lateral development banks, and non-governmental organizations to incorporate this understanding into policy and finance, particularly in Latin America and Asia. She is also lead editor of the book Green Growth That Works, which provides a practical guide to policy and finance mechanisms from around the world for securing benefits from nature.

    BioAli Mani is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. He is a faculty affiliate of the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford in 2009. Prior to joining the faculty in 2011, he was an engineering research associate at Stanford and a senior postdoctoral associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Department of Chemical Engineering. His research group builds and utilizes large-scale high-fidelity numerical simulations, as well as methods of applied mathematics, to develop quantitative understanding of transport processes that involve strong coupling with fluid flow and commonly involve turbulence or chaos. His teaching includes the undergraduate engineering math classes and graduate courses on fluid mechanics and numerical analysis.

    BioPeter Mann is a writer and historian of Modern Europe. He is the author of the novels THE TORQUED MAN (Harper, 2022) and WORLD PACIFIC (Harper, 2025), both named New Yorker Best Books of the Year.

    Mann is interested in 19th- and 20th-century literature and history, especially where they intersect with politics and the absurd. He is also a cartoonist, with work featured in The Baffler, Brick, and GoComics, and currently publishes comics on his Substack newsletter "The Quixote Syndrome."

    At Stanford Mann teaches the first-year Foundations sequence of the Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) program, a syllabus in literature, history, and art, with readings that span the ancient epic to the contemporary novel. Before coming to the MLA, he taught for several years in Stanford's residential freshman humanities program, Structured Liberal Education. He also regularly teaches courses in Stanford Continuing Studies, including: "Modernism in the Metropolis: Artists and Intellectuals in the European City, 1848-1945" and "Modernity and its Discontents: European Thought and Culture from Fin de Siècle to World War II."

    BioDr. Mannil’s academic work spans several high-impact areas, including investigations into the pathophysiology of glaucoma, intracranial pressure dynamics, and advanced imaging biomarkers using OCT, MRI, and machine-learning–based visual field analytics and trans-laminar pressure gradients. She is actively involved in Stanford’s glaucoma research ecosystem, contributing to imaging-based phenotyping, structure–function correlation studies, and novel diagnostic paradigms for early glaucoma detection.
    Her clinical interests encompass the full spectrum of glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmic disease, with expertise in complex diagnostic evaluations, optic neuropathies, and imaging-heavy neuro-visual syndromes. Dr. Mannil’s interest areas include cortical visual disorders, dorsal midbrain syndromes, and secondary optic neuropathies.
    Dr. Mannil is committed to global health, having served in multiple high-volume community outreach programs and charitable surgical initiatives in India and Nepal. She has also contributed in developing structured research and clinical documentation systems from India, Nepal, Hongkong and the US as part of data-driven research programs at Stanford.
    In addition to clinical and research work, Dr. Mannil is building a strong academic portfolio that includes teaching neuro-ophthalmology and glaucoma concepts to residents and fellows, creating image-rich educational materials, and leading structured journal reviews on topics such as trans-laminar pressure physiology, optic nerve vulnerability, and advanced glaucoma diagnostics.
    Her professional interests extend to medical education innovation, patient-facing learning tools, and leveraging large language models for improved ophthalmic communication and global eyecare.
    Dr. Mannil has authored multiple scholarly works, book chapters, and presented as invited faculty at Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology conferences, along with multiple paper presentations at AAO, ARVO, ICGS, and various international glaucoma conferences. She was awarded the prestigious Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology achievement award in 2025 and has also been awarded the Woman in Ophthalmology Honor by the Women Ophthalmology Society of India in 2018. She continues to collaborate with leaders in the field. She is the recipient of the APAO Travel Grant and the APAO International Fellowship Program. Her goal is to bridge the gap between glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, and digital innovation to advance precision care for complex optic nerve diseases.
    Beyond medicine, Dr. Mannil nurtures a deep passion for writing, creative storytelling, interior décor, exploring ancient towns and cultural preservation, particularly through folklore and heritage narratives. She enjoys curating visual art projects, exploring international cuisine, weight training, and capturing travel and nature through photography.
    She lives in the Bay Area and loves exploring various cuisines and reviewing rustic cottages with her husband. The most favorite part of her day is playing sidekick to her 5 year old son.

    BioChristopher Manning is the inaugural Thomas M. Siebel Professor in Machine Learning in the Departments of Linguistics and Computer Science at Stanford University, Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL), and an Associate Director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI). From 2010, Manning pioneered Natural Language Understanding and Inference using Deep Learning, with impactful research on sentiment analysis, paraphrase detection, the GloVe model of word vectors, attention, neural machine translation, question answering, self-supervised model pre-training, tree-recursive neural networks, machine reasoning, dependency parsing, and summarization, work for which he has received two ACL Test of Time Awards and the IEEE John von Neumann Medal (2024). He earlier led the development of empirical, probabilistic approaches to NLP, computational linguistics, and language understanding, defining and building theories and systems for Natural Language Inference, syntactic parsing, machine translation, and multilingual language processing, work for which he won ACL, Coling, EMNLP, and CHI Best Paper Awards. In NLP education, Manning coauthored foundational textbooks on statistical approaches to NLP (Manning and Schütze 1999) and information retrieval (Manning, Raghavan, and Schütze, 2008), and his online CS224N Natural Language Processing with Deep Learning course videos have been watched by hundreds of thousands. In linguistics, Manning is a principal developer of Stanford Dependencies and Universal Dependencies, and has authored monographs on ergativity and complex predicates. He is the founder of the Stanford NLP group (@stanfordnlp) and was an early proponent of open source software in NLP with Stanford CoreNLP and Stanza. He is an ACM Fellow, a AAAI Fellow, and an ACL Fellow, and a Past President of the ACL (2015). Manning has a B.A. (Hons) from The Australian National University, a Ph.D. from Stanford in 1994, and an Honorary Doctorate from U. Amsterdam in 2023.     Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAtomically thin 2D materials incorporated into van der Waals heterostructures are a promising platform to deterministically engineer quantum materials with atomically resolved thickness and abrupt interfaces across macroscopic length scales while retaining excellent material properties. Because 2D materials exhibit a wide range of electronic characteristics with properties that often rival conventional electronic materials — e.g., metals, semiconductors, insulators, and superconductors — it is possible to combine them in virtually infinite variety to achieve diverse heterostructures. Furthermore, the van der Waals interface enables interlayer twist engineering to modify the interlayer symmetry, periodic potential (moiré superlattice), and hybridization, which has resulted in novel quantum states of matter. Many of these heterostructures, especially those involving specific interlayer twist angles, would be otherwise infeasible through direct growth.

    The Mannix Group is developing a unique set of in-house capabilities to systematically elucidate the fundamental structure-property relationships underpinning the growth of 2D materials and their inclusion into van der Waals heterostructures. Greater understanding will allow us to provide a platform for engineering the properties of matter at the atomic scale and offer guidance for emerging applications in novel electronics and in quantum information science.

    To accomplish this, we employ: precise growth techniques such as chemical vapor deposition and molecular beam epitaxy; automated van der Waals assembly; and atomically-resolved microscopy including cryo-STM/AFM.

    BioPeter Manoleas is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 40 years’ experience in mental health and substance abuse as a clinician, administrator, and educator. He is emeritus faculty at the UC Berkeley, School of Social Welfare, having retired from the full time faculty in 2012. Manoleas has consulted widely, including to the (former) California Department of Mental Health, the (former) Mental Health Services Act Oversight and Accountability Commission, The California Endowment, and the UCSF Department of Psychiatry. He is the 2012 recipient of the California Wellness Foundation’s “Champion of Health Professions Diversity” award. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions as well as a regular reviewer for Psychiatric Services, Manoleas has served on numerous boards and commissions, including the California Board of Behavioral Sciences on which he served from 2002-2006, the last year as Chair. He currently maintains a part-time practice.

    BioDr. Neha Mantri serves as the Director of the Structural Imaging Program and Director of the Women’s Cardiology Clinic at Palo Alto VA Health Care System (PAVA HCS). Given her expertise in advanced imaging, she serves as a reader in the Echocardiography Lab at Stanford Hospital. She also leads several echocardiography quality improvement projects, weekly multi-modality imaging educational seminars, and fellow workshops across the PAVA HCS and Stanford echo labs.

    BioDr. Manugian is a board-certified internal medicine doctor at Stanford Primary Care in Portola Valley. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    He has experience diagnosing, managing, and treating a wide range of conditions. These include gastrointestinal disorders, hypertension (high blood pressure), and obesity. Dr. Manugian develops an individualized care plan for each one of his patients.

    Dr. Manugian’s research interests include blood pressure medication, gastric bypass surgery, and restless legs syndrome. He received a student research grant to study how the body processes glucagon (a hormone that regulates blood sugar) following gastric bypass surgery. Dr. Manugian has also studied muscle inflammation as a rare side effect of statins (drugs that lower cholesterol). He monitored a clinical trial evaluating the prescribing of drugs to lower high blood pressure. As a clinical research associate at the Stanford University Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine, Dr. Manugian studied medications to treat restless legs syndrome.

    Dr. Manugian presented research to his peers during his residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He has taught medical students, residents, and physicians about a variety of topics, including alcohol abuse, tick-born illnesses, and managing indigestion.
