Qianheng Ma

BioQianheng (Jessica) Ma obtained her PhD degree of biostatistics at University of Chicago under the supervision of Prof. Donald Hedeker and is the 2021 recipient of the dissertation grant from Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology (SMEP). Her current research focus are modern statistical methods and deep learning techniques for mining (multivariate) intensive longitudinal data especially psychological/behavioral measures collected by mobile/wearable devices. Besides research, she loves playing the piano and is good at Jazz improvisation and she can speak fluent Cantonese.

Quan Maq Ma

BioQuan (Maq) Ma is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Genetics at the Stanford School of Medicine. His research focuses on developing high-throughput sequencing technologies to study RNA modifications and identify substrates of RNA-binding proteins using biochemical and chemical biology approaches. Maq is also interested in the role of RNA editing in inflammatory chronic diseases.

Yuchi Ma
Postdoctoral Scholar, Earth System Science
BioAs a postdoctoral scholar in Earth System Science at Stanford University with a Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering and a minor in Machine Learning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison), my research is dedicated to developing and applying precision sensing technologies and Geospatial AI to advance scalable Earth observation, environmental monitoring, and data-driven decision support. My research program develops sensing-to-decision frameworks that connect the physical and computational dimensions of the Earth system. I contribute across three tightly linked areas: (1) remote sensing strategies for fine-scale environmental and agroecosystem observation; (2) GeoAI methods that improve model generalization across space, sensors, and time; and (3) science applications that translate these methods into actionable insights on land management, climate resilience, and sustainability.
My research has resulted in 8 first-authored and 17 co-authored publications in leading journals, including Nature Sustainability and Remote Sensing of Environment. The impact of my work is reflected in 2 first-authored papers recognized as Web of Science Highly Cited Papers (Top 1%) and 1 first-authored paper designated as a Top Cited Paper in Remote Sensing of Environment (2025). Beyond academia, the real-world impact of my research is evident: my models have been adopted by USDA and Google X, demonstrating their practical value to both government and industry.
Besides, I have taught 3 courses, including one semester as the Lecturer of Record in Geography at UW-Madison. For service, I have served as reviewers for over 30 journals and convened agroecosystem- and AI-related sessions at the AGU and AAG meetings. In addition, I have actively secured internal and external funding, serving as PI or Co-PI on multiple awarded projects. These leadership and collaborative roles have allowed me to build enduring connections with top researchers from academic institutions and private sectors, extending my professional network beyond Stanford. Viviana Macarelli

BioViviana earned her PhD in Clinical Biochemistry from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2024, where she focused on the role of primary cilia in metabolic sensing by the hypothalamus. She then joined the Lundberg lab as a postdoc for a project in collaboration with the Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute. She will focus on characterizing primary cilia in the adult brain using human induced pluripotent stem cells (hIPSC).

Anders Gjølbye Madsen

BioAnders Gjølbye Madsen is a PhD fellow at the Technical University of Denmark. His research focuses on trustworthy machine learning for healthcare, with an emphasis on explainability, interpretability, and reliable evaluation of models in high-stakes settings. He works broadly with modern deep learning methods, including self-supervised learning, and is interested in questions of robustness and alignment. He is the author of PatternLocal, a NeurIPS 2025 paper on reducing false-positive attributions in explanations of non-linear models by refining local explanation approaches. He earned a BSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data from DTU and completed an MSc in Engineering in Applied Mathematics at DTU, including a study exchange in Computational Science and Engineering at ETH Zürich. Anders will spend 2026 as a visiting researcher at Stanford University’s Trustworthy AI Research (STAIR) Lab, working with Professor Sanmi Koyejo.

Benjamin Maki
Postdoctoral Scholar, Earth System Science
BioBen joined Stanford's Earth System Science department as a postdoctoral scholar in February 2026. He is currently working on a series of projects related to the sustainable management of groundwater resources in California's Central Valley, where his work is focused within the context of managed aquifer recharge (MAR). MAR is a suite of methods used to redirect excess surface water into groundwater systems and has emerged as a key strategy to bank freshwater and restore groundwater levels throughout California. More specifically, his work focuses on better understanding the potential risks to groundwater quality posed by naturally occurring geogenic contaminants during recharge efforts, where changes to native geochemical conditions during recharge can result in the inadvertent mobilization of toxic naturally occurring contaminants, such as arsenic, uranium, chromium, and manganese. Current work funded through the Stanford Sustainability Accelerator, and in partnership with the Madera Irrigation District among other community partners, aims to establish a simple, functional multi-user focused toolkit to aid in effectively and safely scaling groundwater recharge efforts throughout the state. Importantly, this work focuses on both understanding community level concerns during local groundwater recharge projects, while simultaneously establishing effective groundwater quality monitoring protocols and designing simple, scalable, and effective field-scale management solutions to protect long-term groundwater quality.
Prior to joining Stanford, Ben completed his Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology, with a designated emphasis in Public Policy, at the University of California Riverside (UCR). His dissertation research focused on assessing the mechanistic controls driving inadvertent geogenic metals solubilization and transformation within MAR systems designed to infiltrate untreated stormwater runoff using recharge basins on agricultural lands in the Pajaro Valley, CA. These systems were uniquely designed to remediate nitrate contamination within infiltrating stormwater via the application of carbon based (e.g., woodchips, almond shells, etc.) horizontal permeable reactive barriers, installed within basin surface soils, where carbon solubilization effectively stimulated native microbial communities to reduce and remediate excess nitrate during infiltration. However, the conditions that promote denitrification (e.g., excess organic carbon and shifts to oxygen depleted conditions) can also result in the solubilization of geogenic metals from soils. Ben’s dissertation work employed novel methods to assess how these processes were influenced by excess organic carbon availability and redox cycling, representative of the cycling wet and dry condition in basin soils during recharge, to better understand the balance between water quality tradeoffs and consider system management strategies to maximize water quality benefits while reducing risks. Preceding his time at UCR, Ben received a BS in Environmental Science from Western Washington University, where he studied the influences of amorphous iron oxyhydroxides and biological amendments on arsenic and iron bioavailability, fate, and transport in soils.
When not thinking about groundwater replenishment, Ben enjoys time with friends, family, and his partner Al and dog Rupert. He spends the bulk of his free time surfing on the California coast, exploring the Bay Area by bicycle and campervan, traveling to as many new places as possible, and enjoying live music, and good food and company along the way! -

BioMariya Mardamshina, MD, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Bioengineering, working in Prof. Emma Lundberg's lab. She earned her medical degree from Semey State Medical University and completed her PhD at Tel Aviv University, where her research focused on spatial inter- and intratumoral heterogeneity in breast cancer using mass spectrometry-based proteomics. Currently, her work in the Lundberg lab centers on deciphering cell-to-cell proteomic variability within a spatial framework. Her research involves developing integrated pipelines that combine automated multiplexed staining, high-resolution microscopy, artificial intelligence, and ultra-high sensitivity mass spectrometry to achieve comprehensive proteomic analyses.

Riccardo Marrocchio
Postdoctoral Scholar, Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery
BioRiccardo Marrocchio received his BSc in Physics from the Sapienza University of Rome and his MSc in Physics from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. During his master, he had the opportunity to study and develop analytical and computational techniques to build mathematical models of complex biological systems, in particular of neuronal networks and the hearing system. He then joined the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research as a Ph.D. researcher at the University of Southampton. During his Ph.D., he worked on the development of a model of active cochlear micromechanics. After his PhD he continued at the University of Southampton joining the DigiTwin project as a Research Fellow, to work on the generalization of the biological feedback system of the cochlea to the design of control systems. To pursue his interests in hearing research, he joined Dr. Ó Maoiléidigh Lab, where he is working on stochastic fluctuations in hair bundles.

Jeremy Martin

BioJeremy T. Martin is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Political Science and affiliate researcher in the Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society at Stanford University. His research examines the politics of philanthropic organizations and their involvement in K-12 public education, with a particular focus on foundations that are created by Black people. More broadly, his work investigates how elite and non-state actors shape education policy.
Jeremy’s postdoctoral research project is a national, multi-year, multi-method study examining how foundations are responding to federal actions and political pressures. The project explores if and how philanthropic strategies and priorities are shifting—and what these changes mean for receiving communities. His postdoctoral research is supported by grants from multiple foundations, including the Walter & Elise Haas Fund and the Stuart Foundation.
Prior to joining Stanford, Jeremy was a Eugene Cota-Robles Doctoral Fellow at UC Berkeley. His dissertation research on Black foundations is organized around three core questions: (1) Why and how were Black foundations created? (2) What political ideological frameworks do foundations adopt? (3) And how do those ideologies shape grantmaking behavior? His dissertation represents the first national empirical study of Black philanthropic foundations.
Jeremy’s work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, including Du Bois Review, Philanthropy & Education, Urban Review, and others.
He holds a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A. from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. -

Alessandra is a PhD student in Gastronomic Sciences at the Basque Culinary Center (Mondragon University). Her doctoral work focuses on exploring filamentous fungi as sustainable food sources to enhance gastronomic biodiversity. She aims to bridge science and gastronomy by integrating analytical chemistry, microbial biotechnology, sensory analysis, and food product development to find sustainable solutions to the way we eat. She has worked as a teacher of food development and technology at the Basque Culinary Center and as a food scientist at Esencia Foods, a startup focused on developing mycelium-based seafood alternatives. Alessandra has also collaborated on science-driven gastronomy projects in Michelin-starred restaurants such as Azurmendi, Mugaritz, and Culler de Pau, where fermentation is used as a tool to create new products and reduce food waste. Her favorite fungi are Rhizopus oligosporus and Neurospora intermedia, known for their ability to develop rich aromas and textures in novel food products. -
Jonathan Massey

BioI completed my PhD at the University of Southampton, where my research focused on the role of surface texture in the hydrodynamics of aquatic locomotion. This project advanced our understanding of the multiscale interactions involved, addressing whether fish scales might actually enhance swimming efficiency.
I have joined Prof. McKeon's group as part of the SAPPHiRE project (Shear stress And Propagating Pressure in High Reynolds Experiments). This multi-facility (Stanford, Princeton, and Melbourne) experimental campaign focuses on measurements of wall-pressure and shear-stress fluctuations in high Reynolds number boundary layers, advancing our understanding of noise and drag in high-Re settings. My involvement is in the modelling and theory for wall-pressure fluctuations and their origins in the velocity field. Previous models are based on extrapolations from low-Re physics, so I will incorporate new techniques to improve upon these in parallel with the experimental campaign. -

BioBrittany Matheson, PhD, is a clinical assistant professor and licensed clinical psychologist in the Eating Disorders Clinic. She completed her undergraduate degree at Duke University, doctorate from the Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego, and APA clinical internship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford (LPCH)/Children’s Health Council. Dr. Matheson is a certified family-based treatment (FBT) therapist and consultant. She is also the director of the Stanford Eating Disorder Research Program Data Coordination Center and collaborates with colleagues on NIH-funded randomized clinical trials. Dr. Matheson's research interests include examining the psychosocial, neurocognitive, and familial factors related to disordered eating and excess weight gain in youth. She is interested in the development and implementation of evidence-based treatments for youth with disordered eating as well as better understanding factors that influence pediatric bariatric surgery outcomes. Dr. Matheson has specialized research and clinical expertise in the interplay among obesity, disordered eating, and autism spectrum disorder and is the director of psychological services for the LPCH adolescent metabolic and bariatric surgery program. She conducts comprehensive evaluations and provides evidence-based treatments for individuals across the age-spectrum with eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, and other specified feeding and eating disorders. Her recent research focuses on reducing access to care barriers by digitizing evidence-based treatments and utilizing technology to enhance treatment outcomes.

Alejandro Matia

BioAlejandro Matía is a CZ Biohub Collaborative Postdoctoral Fellow, working jointly with the Huttenhain lab at Stanford and the Arias group at the CZ Biohub San Francisco. The main focus of his research is to explore the mechanisms underlying viral neurotropism. Alejandro obtained his PhD research at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), employing multi-omic technologies such as CRISPR genetic screens and single cell transcriptomics in Poxvirus infections.

Eric Mayer

BioEnding catastrophic wildfires by making biochar.
Eric Mayer earned a PhD in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University (2020), where he studied fluid mechanics and published research parameterizing lee-wave drag for ocean circulation models, tangentially improving global climate simulations.
Graduating in the early months of the pandemic and eager to act on the implications of his research, Eric went looking for a more immediate way to effect the climate crisis. Upon learning of biochar’s potential for rapidly-scalable carbon sequestration and the simple technologies already developed for on-site biochar production, Eric founded the biochar-as-a-service company Napachar. Today, you can find Napachar in the vineyards and forests of Napa and Sonoma, California, diverting pulled vines and forestry slash from burn piles to bake in flame-cap biochar kilns, returning "waste" carbon to the soil.
Beginning in the spring of 2026, Eric returned to Stanford in a postdoctoral position with the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Doerr School of Sustainability Accelerator, with the mission of ending catastrophic wildfire in fire-adapted forests by making biochar. -
Devin Malloy McCauley

BioDevin McCauley earned his PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from The Pennsylvania State University in 2021, where his research applied intensive longitudinal methods and time-varying effect modeling to investigate family, school, and peer influences on adolescent mental health and well-being. A second focus of his research applies a developmental framework in study of adolescent e-cigarette use. He is particularly interested in identifying sociodemographic (e.g., race/ethnicity, sexual identity) disparities in risk factors for e-cigarette use. His long-term goal is to inform, develop, and evaluate family and school-based prevention programs which support healthy adolescent development and address health disparities related to e-cigarette use.

Alexandria McPherson

BioAlexandria (Xan) McPherson is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University. Xan completed her PhD in Applied Physics at the University of Washington, I-LABS with Dr. Samu Taulu as her advisor. There, she developed improvements to the methodology and instrumentation for on-scalp MEG systems, such as OPM-MEG, with the goal of implementing reliable and robust methods for OPM data collection and processing. During her postdoc, she is continuing her work on OPM-MEG systems with Dr. Laura Gwilliams to further the study of speech comprehension.

Anay Mehrotra

BioI am a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford, where I am excited to work with Amin Saberi. I completed my Ph.D. at Yale University where I was fortunate to be advised by Amin Karbasi and Manolis Zampetakis.
My research focuses on machine learning under complex conditions where traditional assumptions break down. My work has two parts. First, I develop foundations for machine learning with missing and selectively observed data (spanning causal inference, limited-dependence, truncated statistics, and omissions shaped by societal biases). Second, I study why generative AI systems (including language models) are effective and design methods to evaluate and improve their safety.
My work has received the Best Paper Award at COLT, been featured in WIRED, and received the Sir Binay Kumar Sinha award from IIT Kanpur. As an undergraduate, I represented IIT Kanpur at the ICPC World Final. While at Yale, I also taught at the Yale ICPC Club.
