Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI study how the gut ecosystem, gut function, and neuroimmune interactions change during aging and in diseases like Alzheimer’s. I investigate how dietary interventions, including fermented foods and ketones, modulate gut cells and physiology. My goal is to reveal mechanisms through which diet supports healthy aging and to advance dietary strategies for age‑associated diseases.

Martin Jander

BioDr. Jander was born in Freiburg im Breisgau. During his studies of German, History, Sociology, and Political Science in the late 1970s and early 1980s in West-Berlin, he established contact with several opposition members in the GDR and followed their activities. Since then, the topic of opposition in the GDR has been one of his main research fields. Martin Jander's second important field of research is German left-wing terrorism and its international connections. In both fields of research, Jander is particularly interested in references to Antisemitism. Together with Anetta Kahane, he developed the concept of an "unfinished republic" to describe the current Federal Republic of Germany (M. Jander, A. Kahane: Gefährdungen demokratischer Kultur: Die unvollendete Republik, 2020). The republic refuses to understand itself to the full extent as an immigration society. It also refuses to see itself to the full extent as a successor society to National Socialism.

Master of Arts Student in Economics, admitted Spring 2024BioJlateh Vincent Jappah is a PhD Candidate in Health Policy (Health Economics) at Stanford. His research interests intersect between methods that enhance access to the social determinants of health and the provision of appropriate and timely healthcare services, with the aim of reducing avoidable morbidity and mortality and improving overall health and well-being, especially for underserved and vulnerable populations.
Jappah contends that although health insurance and access to healthcare services are important elements in the health production function, other structural and socio-economic factors collude to either foster or erode health. As such, he has a keen interest in public policy, economics, medicine, global public health, maternal and child health, and a curiosity to understand those socio-political and institutional forces that shape health and well-being. He is also interested in machine learning and artificial intelligence in healthcare.
In addition to the United States, Jappah has lived and worked in several countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe.
He is bi-lingual (English and Russian). -
Ann Jaquith

BioDr. Jaquith is the director of the Policy, Organization, and Leadership Studies (POLS) master’s program and lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Through her scholarship and applied research, she is particularly interested in how (and under what conditions) diverse actors in the U.S. educational system can work together to bring about positive change, especially for marginalized and disadvantaged youth. She is the author of “How to Create the Conditions for Learning: Continuous Improvement in Classrooms, Schools, and Districts” (Harvard Education Press, 2017). Her work has also appeared in The Foundation Review, Principal Magazine, Educational Forum, Educational Leadership, Journal of Staff Development, The Handbook of Professional Development, PK-12: Successful Models and Practices, and Second International Handbook of Educational Change.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsClinical interests include autonomic disorders, small fiber neuropathies and the development of effective methods of testing and treating these disorders. Prior work has focused on small fiber painful and autonomic neuropathies; syndromes of orthostatic intolerance and syncope; gastrointestinal motility dysfunction; cyclic vomiting; protacted Gastroesophageal Reflux; non-allergic rhinitis syndromes; and the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and normal or abnormal sleep. Additional areas of interest include the neurology of phonation and swallowing disorders, and peripheral nerve injury and repair.

BioRecent years have seen unprecedented motivation for the emergence of new energy technologies. Global dependence on fossil fuels, however, will persist until alternate technologies can compete economically. We must develop means to produce energy (or energy carriers) from renewable sources and then convert them to work as efficiently and cleanly as possible. Catalysis is energy conversion, and the Jaramillo laboratory focuses on fundamental catalytic processes occurring on solid-state surfaces in both the production and consumption of energy. Chemical-to-electrical and electrical-to-chemical energy conversion are at the core of the research. Nanoparticles, metals, alloys, sulfides, nitrides, carbides, phosphides, oxides, and biomimetic organo-metallic complexes comprise the toolkit of materials that can help change the energy landscape. Tailoring catalyst surfaces to fit the chemistry is our primary challenge.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Jardetzky laboratory is studying the structures and mechanisms of macromolecular complexes important in viral pathogenesis, allergic hypersensitivities and the regulation of cellular growth and differentiation, with an interest in uncovering novel conceptual approaches to intervening in disease processes. Ongoing research projects include studies of paramyxovirus and herpesvirus entry mechanisms, IgE-receptor structure and function and TGF-beta ligand signaling pathways.

Thomas Jaroslawski

BioThomas (Tomek) Jaroslawski is a postdoctoral researcher at the Center of Turbulence Research (CTR). His research interests lie in experimental fluid mechanics, applied to a wide range of applications. He works with Professor Beverley McKeon on investigating rough-walled turbulent boundary layer flows, and also with Professor Juan Santiago on studying the flow physics in various microfluidic applications.

Daniel Jarosz

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory studies conformational switches in evolution, disease, and development. We focus on how molecular chaperones, proteins that help other biomolecules to fold, affect the phenotypic output of genetic variation. To do so we combine classical biochemistry and genetics with systems-level approaches. Ultimately we seek to understand how homeostatic mechanisms influence the acquisition of biological novelty and identify means of manipulating them for therapeutic and biosynthetic benefit.

BioAlireza Javadian Sabet is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Chicago Knowledge Lab and a Digital Fellow at Stanford Digital Economy Lab. He earned a PhD in Information Science from the Resilient Economy Lab at the University of Pittsburgh, where his research focused on mapping career adaptability and understanding how skills and experience translate into changing sets of opportunities over time. He also holds a master’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (PoliMi) and previously served as a research fellow at the Data Science Lab and the DEpendable Evolvable Pervasive Software Engineering group. His work has been discussed in policy and business outlets, including The Economist and the American Enterprise Institute.
Alireza studies how transformative AI reshapes labor markets and innovation systems, developing models and measures from large-scale datasets that link technological capabilities to changes in skills, mobility, and knowledge production. His work combines text and trajectory data to track skill formation in education, quantify how career opportunities expand or concentrate over time, and connect these dynamics to the movement of talent across organizations and borders. He is motivated by the broader challenge of assessing and predicting technology outcomes, including how advances diffuse through tasks and institutions, and how choices around funding, training, and governance influence who benefits from technological change. -

BioDr. Praveen Jayapal is a board-certified radiologist and Assistant Professor of Radiology at Stanford University, specializing in body imaging for both adult and pediatric patients, with a particular focus on MRI. His clinical expertise includes fetal imaging and pediatric musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging. Dr. Jayapal's primary practice is based at 450 Broadway Pavilion B in Redwood City, where he is dedicated to serving the underserved community through the Conrad 30 program. His academic interests center on developing fast MRI techniques to improve access to high-quality imaging, especially in resource-limited settings.

Hakeem Jefferson

BioI am an assistant professor of political science at Stanford University where I am also a faculty affiliate with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and the Stanford Center for American Democracy. I received my PhD in political science from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and African American Studies from the University of South Carolina.
My research focuses primarily on the role identity plays in structuring political attitudes and behaviors in the U.S. I am especially interested in understanding how stigma shapes the politics of Black Americans, particularly as it relates to group members’ support for racialized punitive social policies. In other research projects, I examine the psychological and social roots of the racial divide in Americans’ reactions to officer-involved shootings and work to evaluate the meaningfulness of key political concepts, like ideological identification, among Black Americans.
My dissertation, "Policing Norms: Punishment and the Politics of Respectability Among Black Americans," was a co-winner of the 2020 Best Dissertation Award from the Political Psychology Section of the American Political Science Association. -

Stefanie S. Jeffrey, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Jeffrey led the multidisciplinary team from the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Genome Technology Center that invented the MagSweeper, an automated device that immunomagnetically captures live circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from cancer patient blood for single cell analysis or culture. Her lab also works on microfluidic technologies for tumor cell capture, characterization, and growth - with the goal of defining individual patient response to newer biologically-based cancer therapies.
