Tan Wei Ting

BioWei Ting graduated from University Malaya under the Department of Biomedical Engineering (Bachelor & Master's).Apart from multidisciplinary (tissue engineering, medical imaging, computational biology) research experience, she has worked in startups, industry, clinics, and medical centres with exposure to rehabilitation robotics, TCM in fertility, and clinical trials.

For master's research, funded under Newton Advanced Fellowship in collaboration with Imperial College London’s Prof Xu group and UTM's Dr Mohd Jamil’s group.
1. Research focus: investigating the risk factor of distal stent induced new entry in aortic dissection patients using both simplified and patient-specific models.
2. Presented in local and international conference, published peer review studies and has reviewed paper relevant to the project.
With curiosity for knowledge, arts, philosophy, and the sciences, she often diving into new fields, moves across disciplines, and combines several areas of knowledge. She gained both lab-based and computational skills, for example: bioinformatics, pharmacokinetic modelling, cell staining, confocal microscopy, FRET cell transfection, live cell imaging, image processing, high-performance computing, quantum algorithms, etc.
At MSU, she is part of the Tau Beta Pi National Honor Society and Cloud Computing Foundations (CCF) Program. For the cloud program, her interest is in applying a hybrid quantum-classical computational framework to small-molecule drug development. She is currently a PhD student in Biomedical Engineering from Michigan State University, performing computational analysis and exploring quantum algorithms for biomedical applications in cell(neuron and glia) and gene regulatory networks in the enteric nervous system.
Wei Ting has been active in learning more about different facets of medicine and often engages with researchers and physicians. She has gained familiarity with neurological disease (e.g. autism, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's) from different perspectives (e.g., rehabilitation robotics, brain simulation, and psychiatry). She is invited to join the Neurobehavior and Neuroscience Methods Workshop (SPrINT/Stanford) in 2026. -

Brooke Weigel
Assistant Professor of Oceans
BioDr. Brooke Weigel is a marine ecologist. Her research focuses on the ecology, physiology, and genomics of marine algae and microbial communities in the ocean. She is particularly interested in the feedbacks between climate change, kelp forests, microbes & carbon cycling in the ocean. Her research uses a variety of tools and methods, including field and lab experiments, genomics, bioinformatics, algal culturing, scientific scuba diving, ecophysiology, and biogeochemistry. Overall, her esearch aims to improve our understanding of coastal marine ecosystems with the overall goal of ensuring a healthy, productive, and resilient ocean. The Weigel Lab is based at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove, CA.

Martin Weik

Visiting Scholar, Structural BiologyBioMartin Weik is a CEA research director at the Institut de Biologie Structurale in Grenoble, France. He leads the “Structural Protein Dynamics” research team and chairs the “Dynamics and Kinetics of Molecular Processes” group. His work focuses on the dynamics of proteins — how they move and change shape over time — and how these dynamics relate to their function. Light-sensitive proteins (photoreceptors and fluorescent proteins, for example) are studied using a variety of experimental biophysical methods, including time-resolved serial crystallography at X-ray free electron lasers and synchrotrons. His other research interests include investigating how hydration water (i.e. water molecules surrounding proteins) couples to the dynamics of proteins, fibrous aggregates or disordered regions, using techniques such as neutron spectroscopy. Many of the proteins studied have medical or biotechnological applications.
In addition to conducting research, Martin Weik teaches a master course on using X-ray and neutron scattering to study biomolecular structure and dynamics at the University of Parma, Italy. Between March and June 2026, he is a Fulbright–UGA Scholar, hosted by Professor Soichi Wakatsuki in the Department of Structural Biology at Stanford University. -

Having been trained as a political scientist in Frankfurt/Main, Freiburg, and London,
Hans N. Weiler has been a professor of education and political science at Stanford
University since 1965, where he was instrumental in developing Stanford’s program
in international development education (SIDEC). He was director of UNESCO’s
International Institute for Educational Planning in Paris (IIEP) in the 1970s and has
served as a consultant to a number of international organizations (including the
World Bank and the African Development Bank), foundations and national
governments in Europe, Africa, and South East Asia. At Stanford, he served as
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, as a University Fellow, and as Director of the
Center for European Studies. He was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in
the Behavioral Sciences, and has been awarded research fellowships and grants
by, among others, the British Council, the Japan Society for the Promotion of
Science, the Spencer Foundation, the Thyssen Foundation, the Friedrich Ebert
Foundation, and the Deutsche Bank Foundation. In 1993, he was appointed a
professor of comparative politics and elected the first Rektor (president) of Viadrina
European University at Frankfurt (Oder), a position from which he retired in the fall
of 1999. He chaired the Commission on Higher Education of the State of Saxony
(1999-2002) and was instrumental in the founding and development of the Hertie
School of Governance in Berlin from 2002 to 2009. He has served in a variety of
advisory and consulting roles in German and European higher education between
1999 and 2014. From 2014 to 2017, he served as Stanford’s Academic Secretary to
the University.
He has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the (private) Hertie School
of Governance in Berlin, of the international boards of the Free University of Berlin
and the Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, of the Advisory Board of the Center for Higher
Education Development (CHE) in Germany, and of the Global Scientific Committee
for UNESCO’s Forum on Higher Education, Research and Knowledge. His service
as an evaluator includes the “Excellence Initiative” in German higher education, the
Berlin Social Science Research Center (Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin), the
University of Freiburg, and various award competitions on research, teaching
quality, and teacher education. His recent speaking engagements have included
invited addresses in New York, Paris, Vienna, Budapest, San Francisco,
Heidelberg, Berlin, Frankfurt/Main, Kuala Lumpur, Trieste, Johannesburg, Cape
Town, Munich, Istanbul, and Stanford. He has been awarded the Order of Merit of
the Republic of Poland (Commander’s Cross), of the Federal Republic of Germany
(Bundesverdienstkreuz I. Kl.), and of the State of Brandenburg, as well as an
honorary doctorate by Viadrina University, and honorary citizenship by the city of
Frankfurt (Oder). His publications deal with the politics of educational change, the
international politics of knowledge production, and the dynamics of reform and nonreform
in higher education.

Alexis Thomas Weiner

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling pathway polarizes animal cells along an axis parallel to the tissue plane, and in so doing generates long-range organization that can span entire tissues. Although its core proteins and much about their interactions are known, how PCP signaling occurs at a mechanistic level remains fundamentally mysterious. In my current project I will employ novel genetic methods to dissect the logic underlying how cellular asymmetry arises at a molecular level.

Allen S. Weiner
Senior Lecturer in Law
BioAllen S. Weiner is an international legal scholar with expertise in such wide-ranging fields as international and national security law, the law of war, international conflict resolution, and international criminal law (including transitional justice). His scholarship focuses on international law and the response to the contemporary security threats of international terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and situations of widespread humanitarian atrocities. He also explores assertions by states of “war powers” under international law, domestic law, and just war theory in the context of asymmetric armed conflicts between states and nonstate armed groups and the response to terrorism. In the realm of international conflict resolution, his highly multidisciplinary work analyzes the barriers to resolving violent political conflicts, with a particular focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Weiner’s scholarship is deeply informed by experience; he practiced international law in the U.S. Department of State for more than a decade advising government policymakers, negotiating international agreements, and representing the United States in litigation before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the International Court of Justice, and the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal.
Senior Lecturer Weiner is director of the Stanford Program in International and Comparative Law and director of the Stanford Center on International Conflict and Negotiation. Before joining the Stanford Law School faculty in 2003, Weiner served as legal counselor to the U.S. Embassy in The Hague and attorney adviser in the Office of the Legal Adviser of the U.S. Department of State. He was a law clerk to Judge John Steadman of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. -
Amir Weiner

BioAmir Weiner’s research concerns Soviet history with an emphasis on the interaction between totalitarian politics, ideology, nationality, and society. His first book, Making Sense of War analyzed the role and impact of the cataclysm of the Second World War on Soviet society and politics. His current project, Wild West, Window to the West engages the territories between the Baltic and Black Seas that were annexed by the Soviet Union in 1939-40, from the initial occupation to present. Professor Weiner has taught courses on modern Russian history; the Second World War; the Origins of Totalitarianism; War and Society in Modern Europe; Modern Ukrainian History; and History and Memory.

BioBarry R. Weingast is the Ward C. Krebs Family Professor, Department of Political Science, and a Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution. He served as Chair, Department of Political Science, from 1996 through 2001. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Weingast’s research focuses on the political foundation of markets, economic reform, and regulation. He has written extensively on problems of political economy of development, federalism and decentralization, legal institutions and the rule of law, and democracy. Weingast is co-author of Violence and Social Orders: A Conceptual Framework for Interpreting Recorded Human History (with Douglass C. North and John Joseph Wallis, 2009, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press) and Analytic Narratives (1998, Princeton). He edited (with Donald Wittman) The Oxford Handbook of Political Economy (Oxford University Press, 2006). Weingast has won numerous awards, including the William H. Riker Prize, the Heinz Eulau Prize (with Ken Shepsle), the Franklin L. Burdette Pi Sigma Alpha Award (with Kenneth Schultz), and the James L. Barr Memorial Prize in Public Economics. -

Ashira Weinreich
Masters Student in Community Health and Prevention Research, admitted Autumn 2025
BioAshira is a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow (NSF-GRFP), completing her MS in Community Health and Prevention Research at Stanford University (2025 - June 2026), and a Community Engaged Scholar at Stanford's Haas Center for Public Service. Her research examines how diverse bio-cultural systems inform community health in times of sociocultural and ecological change. By linking cyclical patterns in health practices with seasonality, nutrient intake, and medicinal plant use, Ashira explores how village communities adapt to climatic and environmental variability. As a Fulbright Research Fellow in Nepal (2024-2025), Ashira interviewed community members, organized and facilitated workshops in 12 villages ranging in elevation from 6,500ft to 13,000ft, engaging over 200 villagers. She believes that anticipatory capacity is important in developing resilience in Nepal’s high-altitude Himalayan regions. Ashira is committed to a collaborative, community-centered approach to research, emphasizing the importance of reciprocity and giving back to the community.

Thomas G Weiser, MD, MPH
Clinical Professor, Surgery - General Surgery
BioDr. Thomas Weiser is a general, emergency, and trauma surgeon, and surgical intensivist. He treats and cares for injured patients and those with acute surgical emergencies as well as manages critically ill surgical patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
His research has focused on evaluating the role surgical care plays in the delivery of health services in resource poor settings, in particular low and middle income countries. He is interested in barriers to access and provision of surgical care, the quality of surgical services, and outcomes research as well as the science of implementation, how improvements can be made, and how to strengthen compliance with best practices and change behaviors for the better. He also has an interest in domestic policy as it relates to trauma outcomes, trauma systems, insurance coverage and costs of care, and firearm violence.
Dr. Weiser's efforts have led to improvements in the safety and reliability of surgical service, the quality of surgical care delivered globally, and improvements team dynamics, function, and communication. He works closely with Lifebox, a nonprofit focused on improving surgical and anesthetic safety worldwide, where he was previously the Consulting Medical Officer. Lifebox delivers programs throughout the world in combination with local partners and includes the procurement and distribution of low cost devices to improve the safety of care (including pulse oximeters for the routine monitoring of patients undergoing anesthesia and surgical headlights to safeguard care during power outage) and Clean Cut, a surgical infection prevention and control program that has reduced complications by up to 50%. This work safeguards millions of surgical patients every year.
From 2006-2009, he was part of the World Health Organization’s Safe Surgery Saves Lives program where he quantified the global volume of surgery and created, implemented, evaluated, and promoted the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. He was part of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, the World Bank Disease Control Priorities Program, and a Gates Grand Challenge awardee.
From 2022-2026 he was the Program Director of Surgery: Assess/Validate/Expand (SAVE) at Wellcome Leap. His current research efforts aim to accelerate computer vision models for quantifying surgical performance and identifying mechanisms to predict patient recovery trajectories following surgery. -

Paul B. Welander
Lead Scientist, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory
BioPaul Welander is a Lead Scientist and Head of the Quantum Devices Department in the Technology Innovation Directorate at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Paul’s research interests concern materials for quantum devices, from the study of materials-induced decoherence mechanisms in superconducting quantum bits, to the development of materials platforms that enable novel quantum technologies. He’s a researcher in both the Detector Microfabrication Facility and Nano-X, two new state-of-the-art cleanrooms at SLAC geared toward superconductor quantum device fabrication and rapid nano-prototyping, respectively. Paul also leads experiments at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) to characterize materials used in superconducting quantum devices and correlate those measurements with device performance and quantum decoherence rates. His expertise includes molecular beam epitaxy of metal-oxide heterostructures, superconducting device fabrication, and an array of materials characterization techniques including electron and x-ray diffraction, photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning probe microscopy. Paul received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and holds Bachelors degrees from both Caltech and Occidental College. Prior to joining SLAC in 2012, he spent five years as a member of the technical staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAs a physician-scientist I work to understand the genetic basis of cardiovascular disease and the transcriptional and epigenomic mechanisms of atherosclerosis. My work is focused across four main areas of cardiovascular genetics and mechanisms of coronary artery disease and smooth muscle biology:
1.Vascular smooth muscle specific ADAR1 mediated RNA editing of double stranded RNA and activation of the double stranded RNA receptor MDA5 in coronary artery disease and vascular calcification
2.Defining on single cell resolution the cellular and epigenomic features of human vascular disease across vascular beds of differing embryonic origin
3.CRISPRi screening with targeted perturb seq (TAPseq) to identify novel CAD genes in human coronary artery smooth muscle cells
4.Investigation of the epigenetic and molecular basis of coronary artery disease and smooth muscle cell transition in mice with conditional smooth muscle genetic deletion of CAD genes Pdgfd and Sox9
My work is focused on discovery of causal mechanisms of disease through leveraging human genetics with sophisticated molecular biology, single cell sequencing technologies, and mouse models of disease. This work attempts to apply multiple scientific research arms to ultimately lead to novel understandings of vascular disease and discover important new therapeutic approaches for drug discovery.

Andy Wen
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics - Critical Care
BioDr. Andy Y. Wen joined the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2019. He received his B.A. degree in Molecular Biology & Biochemistry at Rutgers University, and his medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed a Pediatrics Residency Training Program at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Training Program at the University of California Los Angeles.
After briefly working for Kaiser Permanente Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Dr. Wen joined the Division of Pediatric Critical Care at NYU School of Medicine. He assumed the role of Bellevue Hospital PICU medical director and helped to expand Bellevue's Pediatric Trauma Program and Pediatric Critical Care Transport Services for the New York City (NYC) public hospital system, NYC Health & Hospitals. During the 2014 to 2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, Dr. Wen was a member of the Special Pathogens Program at Bellevue Hospital, which was one of only four institutions in the US to treat a patient with Ebola and helped established the National Ebola Training and Education Center (NETEC).
While at UCLA, Dr. Wen received a T32 Training Grant to perform research investigating the role of transcription factor CREB in innate immune function using a murine model for AML. At NYU, his research projects included analyzing transfusion practices in the PICU, quality improvement projects targeting patients at high risk for unplanned extubation, and exploring the utility of NIRS as an early predictor of seizure activity. Dr. Wen is a member of Pediatric Acute Lung Injury & Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) and has been involved in multi-center studies looking at critical care patients with Bronchiolitis and COVID-19. Dr. Wen is the USA Editor for Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care and has reviewed abstracts for PAS, SCCM, and AMIA. His educational efforts have included teaching Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Support (PFCCS) courses, helping develop a Pediatric Residency Simulation course curriculum, and helping develop a Point-of-Care Ultrasound course for critical care advanced practice providers.
At Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Wen is in charge of Regional Pediatric Critical Care Outreach with a goal to promote medical education and expand the Stanford Children’s Health network to improve access for sick children in need of high quality care. Dr. Wen provides clinical services at both John Muir Medical Center and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. -
