Giselle (Ghazal) Salmasi, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Hematology
BioDr. Salmasi is a board-certified, fellowship-trained hematologist. She treats patients in the Hematology Program and the Hematologic Cancer Program at Stanford Health Care. Dr. Salmasi is the associate clinical chief for classical hematology. She is also a clinical associate professor in the Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
She treats a wide range of blood disorders and blood cancers. Her clinical/research interests include immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (wAIHA). Dr. Salmasi understands that patients need social and emotional support along with medical care. She founded the earliest adolescent and young adult survivorship support groups in Santa Cruz, California, and Toronto, Canada. Dr. Salmasi is also dedicated to training future doctors in providing excellent hematologic care.
Dr. Salmasi was the medical co-investigator for a national phase 3 clinical trial of endovascular therapy for treating chronic venous thrombosis.
Her research has appeared in the Leukemia & Lymphoma journal and the Transfusion and Apheresis Science journal. Dr. Salmasi’s publications include articles and a chapter about lymphoma. She has also reviewed articles for the Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation journal and the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Salmasi is a member of the American Society of Hematology. -
Vafi Salmasi
Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine (Adult Pain)
BioDr. Vafi Salmasi is an interventional pain specialist and anesthesiologist at Stanford University School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2004. He completed his anesthesiology training at the Cleveland Clinic, where he also completed a research fellowship in the Department of Outcomes Research.
After his fellowship in Pain Medicine, Dr. Salmasi joined the Stanford University Division of Pain Medicine as a faculty member. He furthered his expertise by earning a Master’s Degree in Clinical Research and Epidemiology.
Dr. Salmasi’s research focuses on advancing clinical knowledge through the real-world application of therapies in perioperative and pain medicine. He integrates pragmatic comparative effectiveness research into routine clinical care. At the Stanford Pain Management Center, he is an active member of the neuromodulation and advanced intervention team. -

Joshua Salomon
Professor of Health Policy and Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies
BioJoshua Salomon is a Professor of Health Policy, a core faculty member in the Center for Health Policy, and Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. His research focuses on public health policy and priority-setting, within three main substantive areas: (1) modeling patterns and trends in major causes of global mortality and disease burden; (2) evaluation of health interventions and policies; and (3) measurement and valuation of health outcomes.
Dr. Salomon is an investigator on projects funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, relating to modeling of infectious and chronic diseases and associated intervention strategies; methods for economic evaluation of public health programs; measurement of the global burden of disease; and assessment of the potential impact and cost effectiveness of new health technologies.
He is Director of the Prevention Policy Modeling Lab, which is a multi-institution research consortium that conducts health and economic modeling relating to infectious disease. Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, Dr. Salomon was Professor of Global Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Matteo Salvador
Postdoctoral Scholar, Cardiology
BioMatteo Salvador is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Computation Lab led by Professor Alison Marsden.
His main research topics are related to cardiac modeling, model-order reduction and uncertainty quantification.
Matteo Salvador received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Engineering and his Master of Science in Computational Science and Engineering from Politecnico di Milano.
He completed his PhD in Mathematical Models and Methods for Engineering at Politecnico di Milano under the supervision of Professor Alfio Quarteroni. He worked in the framework of the iHEART project, whose aim is to create a fully integrated human heart for the accurate and efficient numerical simulation of the cardiac function. Specifically, he developed comprehensive mathematical models blended with novel numerical methods and Scientific Machine Learning for cardiac electromechanics. -
Aaron Keith Salyapongse
Clinical Associate Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Salyapongse is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon. He is the medical director of Interventional Services, medical director of Joint Replacement, and chief of Orthopaedics for Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley. He is also a clinical associate professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Salyapongse performs the full range of orthopaedic surgery procedures to treat injuries and conditions related to the hip and knee. He has extensive training and experience in the diagnosis and use of advanced treatment techniques for disorders of the hip and knee, including meniscus tears, arthritis, avascular necrosis, and post-traumatic injuries.
Dr. Salyapongse does hundreds of knee and hip replacements annually. His goal with each patient is to help them recover quickly and safely, with durable, long-lasting joint replacements as a result. He specializes in tissuesparing techniques, including an anterior approach to hip replacement.
Dr. Salyapongse is a certified instructor of anterior hip replacement. He has performed more than 2,000 procedures and traveled nationwide to teach it to other surgeons. Anterior hip replacement offers the potential for faster recovery, as it involves a small incision that presents less of a disruption to the muscles. Dr. Salyapongse also specializes in techniques such as Anterior PATH, or percutaneous assisted total hip replacements.
For knee replacements, Dr. Salyapongse uses a variety of techniques, including robotic surgery. He also specializes in partial knee replacements for patients who may be experiencing arthritis in a localized area but who might not be ready for a full replacement. Partial replacements enable patients to have a faster recovery and a more natural feeling knee post-surgery.
Dr. Salyapongse welcomes referrals from specialists as well as primary care physicians. He sees patients at every stage of their care journey, but especially when their situation has progressed beyond interim interventions like physical therapy or injections. He views each of his patients as an individual with a unique set of goals and tailors each treatment plan to fit their specific needs. While Dr. Salyapongse will help patients first explore the alternatives, he may recommend surgery once activities of daily living
(like sleep, work, or gait pattern) have been impacted.
In an effort to make outpatient care more accessible, Dr. Salyapongse has helped to pioneer the use of digital technology to prepare patients before, during, and after hip and knee surgery. His passion is to improve patient engagement and thus outcomes by letting patients know what they can expect at every stage of their care journey.
Dr. Salyapongse has co-authored articles on a variety of topics related to techniques, technologies, and outcomes in joint replacement surgery. His work has appeared in the American Journal of Orthopaedics, Journal of Arthroplasty, Current Sports Medicine Reports, and other publications.
He has made presentations on hip and knee replacement planning and surgery at meetings such as the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and Western Orthopaedic Association.
Dr. Salyapongse has won honors for his work, such as a Physician Champion Award for outstanding patient care. He is a member of the American Academy of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. -

Jacinda Sampson

BioDr. Jacinda Sampson received her MD and a PhD in biochemistry from University of Alabama at Birmingham, and completed her neurology residency and neurogenetics fellowship at the University of Utah. She served at Columbia University Medical Center prior to joining Stanford University Medical Center in 2015. Her areas of interest include myotonic dystrophies, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and neurogenetic disorders such as neurofibromatosis, hereditary spastic paraparesis, spinocerebellar ataxia, among others. She is interested in clinical trials for treatment of neurogenetic disorders, and in the clinical application of next-generation genomic sequencing to genetic testing.

Niyatee Samudra, MD

BioDr. Samudra is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She specializes in the care of patients with memory disorders and epilepsy. She has completed fellowship training in behavioral neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, as well as in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Samudra is board-certified in neurology and in epilepsy.
Her research interests include clinical trials in memory disorders and epilepsy; early neurophysiological markers of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders; neuropsychiatric symptoms in neurodegenerative disorders; and the cognitive and neuropsychiatric consequences of epilepsy. She is interested in improving neurologic care for underserved populations.

Pablo Amador Sanchez

Fellow in Graduate Medical EducationBioDr. Pablo Sanchez is a medical fellow at Stanford University. He earned a degree in physiology at The University of Arizona and received his M.D. from The University of Arizona College of Medicine, in Tucson. He completed Internal Medicine training at Brigham & Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School, and served as Chief Resident from 2018-2019. During residency, his research focused on clinical outcomes of the complex patient composition in the modern Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. He completed Cardiovascular Medicine fellowship at Stanford and served as Chief Fellow from 2021-2022. He is interested in cardio-pulmonary interactions in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Under the tutelage of Dr. Angela Rogers (Pulmonary Medicine Division) and Dr. Euan Ashley (Cardiovascular Medicine Division), he plans to integrate immune-metabolic biomarker and echocardiographic profiling to identify cardiac dysfunction in ARDS. He receives funding from the National Institutes of Health through the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA, F32) and Loan Repayment Award. He is pursuing additional fellowship training in critical care medicine.

Kelly Corbett Sanders

BioDr. Kelly Sanders is a Stanford pediatrician and the Technical Lead of the Pandemic Response Initiative at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Institute for Global Health Sciences. She completed a Master of Science and Doctor of Medicine at the University of San Francisco, California, and pediatrics residency training at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University. Before pursuing a career as a physician, Dr. Sanders worked with the UCSF Global Health Group’s Malaria Elimination Initiative (MEI) on operational research projects with partner countries, as well as on developing communications and advocacy priorities with MEI and global partners. Previously, she worked with the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences, supporting the creation of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health and the UC Global Health Institute. In addition to her work at UCSF, Dr. Sanders practices clinically as a pediatrician at Stanford University, Palo Alto Medical Foundation and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Sanders is the Program Director of the Comprehensive Care Unit at Stanford where she teaches and works with inpatients with eating disorders. She has specialized in the treatment of eating disorders for the past 35 years at Stanford. She has written extensively and presented nationally on the subject of the evaluation and treatment of eating disorders and also in the field of child abuse, specifically in the area of Munchausen by proxy.
Dr. Sanders is also involved with an international outreach project in Ghana called Project Okurase. This project involved an annual medical health outreach in the village. The project is also creating a model village which includes the building of a medical clinic, vocational school, and homes for families that take in orphans. The project is also involved with bringing safe water, building compost toilets, and bringing solar energy to the village. -
Alexander Tarlochan Singh Sandhu

BioAlex Sandhu, MD, MS is a cardiologist with a special interest in the care of patients with advanced heart failure. He graduated from the seven-year combined BA-MD program at Northwestern with a focus on economics and mathematics. He completed an internal medicine residency at Stanford University, spending 16 weeks at Makerere Hospital in Uganda as part of the Global Health track. He subsequently earned a Masters in Health Services Research at Stanford while acting as a fellow in health services research at the Palo Alto VA and Stanford's Center for Health Policy/Primary Care and Outcomes Research. Next, he completed fellowships in cardiology and advanced heart failure and transplant at Stanford before joining the faculty.
Alex is now an active clinician and heart failure researcher who focuses on health economics, the implementation of high-value care strategies, comparative effectiveness, and innovative clinical trial design. He is passionate about patient care and finding ways to bring meaningful improvements to patients’ lives. He is involved in several clinical trials including the K-23 funded PRO-HF (patient centered quality of life assessments), DOT-HF (mobile device based implementation trial), and a CAC notification pilot trial (patient centered coronary artery calcification notification).
In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer as well as entertaining and being entertained by his joyful sons, Kyle and Tyler. -
Gisela Sandoval
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences
BioDr. Gisela Sandoval is a physician scientist with dual board certification who specializes in medical-psychiatric illness caring for individuals that suffer from medical conditions at the interface of medicine and psychiatry, which often requires complex chronic care. In addition she treats children with a broad range of psychiatric disorders including neurodevelopmental disorders, ADHD and mood and anxiety disorders in adolescents. She has a thorough and comprehensive way to approach her patients; she considers not only the clinical symptoms but also the impact of the family structure and the functioning of the child at school. Dr. Sandoval has a special interest in establishing standard of care guidelines to address the needs of chronically ill children to promote healthy habits and medical treatment compliance that promote health and decrease the burden of chronic medical and psychiatric illness.
Dr. Sandoval graduated with honors from the California Institute of Technology where she performed research in brain physiology and evolution. She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School where she also completed a Ph.D. specializing in molecular neurobiology and genetics. Dr. Sandoval completed her residency in general psychiatry at the University of Chicago, during which she received the NIMH Outstanding Resident Award. She went on to complete a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency of Columbia and Cornell Universities. After training she became the Clinical Director of the Warren Wright Adolescent Center at Northwestern University developing a successful clinical program focused on early identification and intervention for adolescents at risk of mental illness before moving to Stanford.
Dr. Sandoval scientific interests focus on understanding the molecular, neurophysiological and neural circuits that are responsible for healthy brain development and behavior and understanding how these are altered in the developmental neuropsychiatric disorders resulting in pathological behaviors with the expectation that that could lead to new treatments. Furthermore, she is interested in identifying quantifiable metrics of behavior to better diagnosis mental illness by exploring the use of physical activity monitors to help assess the effectiveness of medical therapies. -
Ryan Sandoval, M.D.
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Cardiovascular Medicine
BioDr. Sandoval is a board-certified cardiologist and a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Texas at Austin, where he continued on as chief resident before going on to complete his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the Medical University of South Carolina. Prior to his residency, he completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
His clinical interests include preventive cardiology and management of heart failure. He is particularly focused on treating patients with the complex clinical syndrome of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).
His interest in preventive cardiology grew through his participation in clinics for the uninsured and underinsured during his training. These experiences fostered his passion for understanding and addressing health care disparities. He is deeply committed to providing exceptional patient care with a personalized approach to treatment and improving the lives of his patients.
He is a member of the American College of Cardiology. -
Rebecca Sands
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Sands currently serves as the Clinical Section Chief of Palliative Care at Stanford University. She graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 2001 with a BA in Chemistry. She then attended Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine from 2002-2006. She completed a residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, MA and went on to complete her Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) fellowship at the Harvard combined program at Massachusetts General Hospital/Dana Farber Cancer Institute in 2011. She spent 8 years at the University of Pittsburgh where she served as core teaching faculty and the HPM Fellowship Program Director. Her clinical work has focused on the intersection of oncology and palliative care. Her primary interests are in mentorship and the advancement of palliative care within the structure of academic medicine including ambulatory practice. She has a particular focus on resiliency skill development for trainees, staff, and faculty as well a commitment to the innovation of ways to create meaning in our everyday lives as health care professionals.

Shengtian Sang

BioShengtian Sang is currently a post-doctoral scholar at the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Biomedical Physics in the department of Radiation Oncology at Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. degree from the College of Computer Science and Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian, China. His current research interests are high-dimensional data mining, medical image computing, and machine learning. In his Ph.D. study, he worked on the biomedical literature-based discovery and data mining.

Steven Sanislo, MD
Clinical Professor, Ophthalmology
BioDr Sanislo has over 20 years of experience in clinical and surgical practice in retinal and vitreoretinal diseases. He is the senior vitreoretinal surgeon at Stanford and maintains a large clinical practice as well as teaching ophthalmology residents and retina fellows. He also participates in clincal reasearch for varying retinal conditions. Dr. Sanislo recieved ophthalmology training as a resident here at Stanford, and recieved vitreoretinal training as a fellow at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Research interests include treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases.

Kathryne Sanserino

BioDr. Sanserino provides hospital-based obstetric and gynecologic care. She cares for patients admitted to Stanford Hospital with gynecologic problems. She also works at Lucille Packard on Labor and Delivery. She has a background in community health work in quality improvement. She is committed to safe, equitable health care and has a patient-centered, evidence-based practice approach.

Peter L. Santa Maria, MBBS, PhD

On Partial Leave from 08/01/2023 To 07/14/2024Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study chronic suppurative otitis media, a chronic biofilm infection of the middle ear predominantly involving pseudomonas and staph aureus. We are investigating mechanisms of sensory hearing loss, host microbe interactions and trialling novel therapeutics.
Our work in tympanic membrane regeneration has entered clinical trials.
Novel treatments for wound healing in intra oral wounds with potential applications to prevent post tonsillectomy wound healing and oral mucositis. -
Calvin Santiago

BioDr. Santiago is Board-certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, specializing in Neurology. He completed his Adult Neurology residency at the University of Toronto and is now a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Comprehensive Neurology at Stanford University. He provides comprehensive neurological care to patients with a broad range of neurological conditions. His academic interests focus on improving access to neurological care, such as reducing wait times and stream-lining referrals so that patients are directed to the most appropriate care provider.

Christine Santiago

BioDr. Christine Santiago is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Stanford Division of Hospital Medicine with a deep commitment to improving healthcare access and equity. Dr. Santiago earned her M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School graduating cum laude and completed an M.P.H. in Health Policy and Management at the University of California Berkeley.
Throughout her career, Dr. Santiago has actively engaged in various leadership roles and initiatives, such as co-founding the Stanford Health Equity, Advocacy and Research Program (Stanford HEARs), a resident-led program aimed at addressing healthcare disparities. She also had the privilege of serving as Chief Resident, where she supported educational activities and mentored fellow residents.
With a strong focus on diversity and inclusion, Dr. Santiago has been involved in multiple professional associations, including the American College of Physicians and the California Medical Association, to promote diversity within healthcare. Matteo Santoro Pharm.D., Ph.D.
Postdoctoral Scholar, Pathology
BioDr. Santoro joined Shamloo’s lab in March 2021 focusing his research on Parkinson’s disease, neuronal vulnerability, and identification of therapeutic markers in relation to α-synucleinopathies. Prior to his arrival at Stanford, he held a position as a clinical monitor at Syneos Health where he gained key knowledge needed to translate lab-based findings into clinical and commercial applications. Previously, Dr. Santoro held a postdoctoral position at the University of Aberdeen (Scotland, UK) working on amyloid-beta extracts from Alzheimer’s disease patients. During his postdoctoral research, Dr. Santoro designed and optimized a cost-effective and rapid assay for the measurement of toxic amyloid-beta species in human biofluids. In 2017, he obtained his Ph.D. (4-year program) at the University of Aberdeen on Parkinson’s disease (PD), immunology, and behavior. The major findings Ph.D. findings were the following: 1) the characterization of a small protein called HMGB1 as an inflammatory mediator in PD; 2) the motor and non-motor behavioral characterization of three neurotoxin based mouse models of PD, 3) the characterization of the innate immune response in PD through the toll-like receptor signaling pathways 4) evaluation of the effects of chronic systemic inflammation on both resident and infiltrating immune cells in the CNS. In 2012 Dr. Santoro attained his Pharm.D. in chemistry and pharmaceutical technology (5-year program) at the University of Calabria (Italy) during which he undertook an internship at the King’s College London (SGDP Centre) and worked for over a year on a rat model of stroke.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study the organizing principles of the genome and how these principles regulate cell identity and developmental switches. We combine Biochemistry and Biophysical methods such as NMR and Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange-MS with Cell Biology, and Genetics to explore genome organization across length and time scales and understand how cells leverage the diverse biophysical properties of chromatin to regulate genome function.

Mrinmoy Sanyal

BioMrinmoy Sanyal obtained his undergraduate and master's degree in Human Physiology at the University of Calcutta. He did his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, working on reproductive immunology, with the focus on trophoblast invasion and differentiation and their role in human blastocyst implantation. Then, he moved to Stanford University for a postdoctoral fellowship on the role of transcription factor Pbx1, a leukemia proto-oncogene, on B cell development. Currently, he is Research Scientist at Department of Biochemistry, Stanford University. His work covers various topics, including B cell responses to viral infection and vaccination, human primary immunodeficiency, and biology of lymphocyte development and function and to elucidate etiology of immunological disorders.
