Tina Seelig
Executive Director, Knight-Hennessy Scholars
BioDr. Tina Seelig is Executive Director of Knight-Hennessy Scholars at Stanford University - the largest endowed fellowship program in the world - which cultivates and supports a multidisciplinary and multicultural community of graduate students from across the university, and prepare graduates to address complex challenges facing the world. She is also Director Emerita of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, where she served as executive director, faculty director, and professor of the practice in the Department of Management Science and Engineering (MS&E). She teaches courses on leadership, creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship in MS&E and the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (d.school) at Stanford.
Dr. Seelig earned a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Stanford University School of Medicine where she studied neuroplasticity. She has worked as a management consultant for Booz, Allen, and Hamilton, as a multimedia producer at Compaq Computer Corporation, and was the founder of a multimedia company called BookBrowser.
Tina Seelig has written 17 books and educational games. Her newest books, published by HarperCollins, explore the process of bringing ideas to fruition. They include What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20 (2009/2019), inGenius: A Crash Course on Creativity (2012), and Creativity Rules (September 2017.) Her earlier books include The Epicurean Laboratory and Incredible Edible Science, which focus on the chemistry of cooking, published by Scientific American; and a dozen games for children, called "Games for Your Brain," published by Chronicle Books.
Tina Seelig has been widely honored for her work, including the Gordon Prize from the National Academy of Engineering, recognizing her as a national leader in engineering education; the SVForum Visionary Award; the National Olympus Innovation Award; the Richard W. Lyman Award, which recognizes one outstanding Stanford faculty member for extraordinary service to the Stanford Alumni Association programs; and the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers Legacy Award. Krish Seetah

BioI am a zooarchaeologist, whose focus is primarily on colonisation and colonialism. My zooarchaeological research has used butchery analysis (with the benefit of professional and ethnographic actualistic experience) to investigate agency within the human-animal relationship. More recently, I have employed geometric morphometrics (GMM) as a mechanism for identifying and distinguishing animal populations. This approach to studying colonial activity centres on understanding how people manipulate animal bodies, both during life and after death.
Alongside the strictly faunal research is a research interest in technologies associated with animal processing. This has been used to investigate issues of technology, trade and socio-economic attitudes within colonial contexts in the Mediterranean (Venice & Montenegro) and the Baltic (Poland, Latvia & Lithuania).
I am also the Director of the ‘Mauritian Archaeology and Cultural Heritage’ (MACH) project, which studies European Imperialism and colonial activity. This project centres on the movement of peoples and material cultures, specifically within the contexts of slavery and Diaspora. The work of this project has focused on key sites in Mauritius and is based on a systematic programme of excavation and environmental sampling. The underlying aims are to better understand the transition from slavery to indentured labour following abolition, the extent and diversity of trade in the region and the environmental consequences of intense, monoculture, agriculture. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch
I study active earthquake and volcanic process through data collection, inversion, and theoretical modeling. Using methods such as precise Global Positioning System (GPS) positioning and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) we are able to measure deformation in space and time and invert these data for the geometry of faults and magma chambers, and spatiotemporal variations in fault slip-rate and magma chamber dilation. The accumulation of shear strain in tectonic regions provides a direct measure of earthquake potential. Similarly, magma accumulation in the crust prior to eruptions causes measurable inflation. We use these data to develop and test models of active plate boundaries such as the San Andreas, and the Cascade and Japanese subduction zones, the nucleation of earthquakes, slow slip events, induced seismicity, and the physics of magma migration leading to volcanic eruptions. These physics-based models rely on principles and methodologies from solid and fluid dynamics.
Teaching
I teach introductory undergraduate classes in natural hazards and the prediction of volcanic eruptions, as well as graduate level courses on modeling earthquake and volcano deformation and geophysical inverse theory.

Carolyn Dacey Seib, MD, MAS
Associate Professor of Surgery (General Surgery)
BioDr. Carolyn Dacey Seib is a fellowship-trained endocrine surgeon and board-certified general surgeon who specializes in surgery of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. In 2025, she was among the first surgeons in the United States to earn a Focused Practice Designation in Complex Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery from the American Board of Surgery, reflecting her expertise in these procedures and related patient management.
Dr. Seib provides comprehensive and personalized care for patients with thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal disorders, including thyroid cancer, hyperthyroidism, primary hyperparathyroidism, primary aldosteronism, autonomous cortisol secretion, and pheochromocytomas. Her approach combines advanced surgical techniques with a focus on patient-centered outcomes, ensuring that each treatment plan is tailored to the individual.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Seib is an NIH-funded researcher whose work focuses on optimizing surgical decision-making and outcomes for patients with endocrine disorders. She has received research support from the National Institute on Aging and the American Thyroid Association, and her studies have been published in leading peer-reviewed journals and featured in national media, including The New York Times.
Dr. Seib completed her undergraduate education at Princeton University (summa cum laude), earned her medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine, and completed her general surgery residency and endocrine surgery fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). -

Alicia Seiger

Visiting Scholar, Precourt Institute for EnergyBioAlicia Seiger is a recognized expert at the intersections of climate, technology, policy, finance, and innovation. She is a Visiting Scholar at SDSS and an occasional lecturer. Alicia currently directs the climate program at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). Prior to CZI, Alicia led sustainability and energy finance initiatives at Stanford Law, Graduate School of Business, and the Doerr School for Sustainability. Alicia has served as an advisor to the Governors of California and New York, the New York State Comptroller, and numerous pension fund, endowment, and family office CIOs on the topics of climate risk, opportunity, and resiliency. For over two decades, Alicia has designed and executed climate and energy strategies for businesses, foundations, investors, and NGOs. She has led on the management teams of multiple startups, including at TerraPass, a pioneer of the US voluntary carbon offset market, and Flycast Communications, one of the world’s first web advertising networks. She co-founded Stanford Professionals in Energy (SPIE) and serves on the boards of Prime Coalition and The E-liability Institute and on the Editorial Board of the Oxford Open Climate Change Journal.
Her first book, "Settling Climate Accounts: Navigating the Road to Net Zero" contextualizes the history of climate action, examines the practices of pursuing net zero, and makes recommendations for the road ahead. Alicia received her BA from Duke University in a self-designed curriculum intersecting environmental science and policy with cultural anthropology, and earned her MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. -
Serdar Selamet

BioAssoc. Professor with focus on Fire Engineering, Steel Structures and Numerical Modeling. Dr. Selamet specializes in fire protection engineering with focus on buildings and structures. His areas of expertise include heat transfer analysis, stability and critical temperature assessment of structural members, passive fire protection, building envelope (i.e. façade) fires, performance-based structural analysis under fire conditions and house fires in wildland urban interface. He specializes in providing origin and cause determinations for fires and explosions. Dr. Selamet has expertise in thermo-mechanical modeling and response using finite element software Abaqus and OpenSees Fire. In addition, he has gained experience using computer zone models such as OZone and Consolidated Model of Fire and Smoke Transport (CFAST) to simulate compartment fire dynamics.

Elizabeth Selig, Ph.D.

BioElizabeth Selig works at the intersection of environmental and social sustainability in marine ecosystems. Her current research focuses on understanding social-ecological feedbacks in ocean health, marine resource conflicts, and patterns in illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and labor abuses in fisheries. Selig received her Ph.D. in ecology at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Her dissertation focused on how global climate change may affect coral reef health and management strategies that can help mitigate coral loss. She has more than ten years of experience working with international non-governmental organizations including Conservation International, where she was the Senior Director of Marine Science. She has also worked at the Smithsonian Institution and the World Resources Institute.
Selig is part of the core team behind the Blue Food Assessment, an international scientific assessment of the contribution of aquatic foods to human nutrition and environmental impacts, with a focus on equity and environmental vulnerability of production. For the last several years, she has also been a part of the Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship (SeaBOS) science team. She was a lead author on the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Global Assessment and is part of the International Science Advisory Council for the Stockholm Resilience Centre. -
Zachary M. Sellers, MD, PhD

BioDr. Sellers is a pediatric physician-scientist and research and clinical development consultant. As a pediatric gastroenterologist and ion channel physiologist, Dr. Sellers' work in academia and pharma over the last 20 years has focused on improving the lives of individuals with complex and rare diseases through providing cutting-edge clinical care and advancing research and drug development. Dr. Sellers previously led a basic and translational research laboratory at Stanford, focused on epithelial ion transport and acid-base regulation using a variety of human and animal models. He is a firm believer in the exponential impact of team science and is adept working in multi-disciplinary and cross-functional teams. He seeks out strategic partnerships and opportunities that can leverage his expertise and leadership to advance innovative therapies for areas of high unmet need and to support the development of the next generation of physician-scientists. Dr. Sellers received his BS (Animal Physiology and Neuroscience) and BA (Japanese Studies) from the University of California. San Diego, his MD and PhD (Molecular and Integrative Physiology) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and was trained in Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Stanford, where he was previously a faculty member and attending physician. He held multiple leadership positions at Stanford, including Associate Chief of Research in Gastroenterology, Director of the Stanford Children's Pancreas Program, Lead Gastroenterologist for the CF Program, Director of the CFTR Phenotyping and Theratyping Program, and Physician-Scientist Advisor for the Pediatrics Residency Program.

Deborah Sellmeyer
Clinical Professor, Medicine - Endocrinology, Gerontology, & Metabolism
BioDr. Sellmeyer is an internationally recognized expert in Metabolic Bone Disease. She is a renowned clinician who joined the Stanford faculty in 2018 as a Professor of Medicine. She has been recognized for her clinical excellence with induction into the Miller Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence while she was at Johns Hopkins. In addition to her clinical expertise, Dr. Sellmeyer maintains a research program that centers on the effect of nutrition and environmental factors on skeletal metabolism which she has investigated through both smaller CRC-based trials and large multi-center trials. Studies she has conducted have investigated the role of dietary sodium chloride, source of dietary protein (animal, vegetable, dairy, soy), role of dietary potassium and alkaline potassium salts, targeted thoracic exercises on kyphosis, whether structured exercise can prevent bone loss in premenopausal women treated for breast cancer, and studies validating nutritional assessment questionnaires. Her expertise as a clinical researcher has enabled development of a multi-disciplinary translational research team including basic scientists in the orthopedic department, junior faculty members with K grant funding, and basic scientists in the endocrine division to develop translational projects studying the effects of osteoporosis medications on basic elements of skeletal biology utilizing bone biopsies from treated individuals as well as clinical trials of novel therapies for rare bone disorders. Dr. Sellmeyer also is a esteemed educator, having received multiple teaching awards.

Subhro K. Sen, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Surgery - Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
BioSubhro K. Sen, MD, Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in biomedical engineering. He went on to receive his medical degree from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. After medical school, he completed a yearlong peripheral nerve research fellowship under Dr. Susan Mackinnon at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He completed his postgraduate training in general surgery at Indiana University, followed by plastic and reconstructive surgery at Johns Hopkins University. He finished his training with a hand and upper extremity surgery fellowship at Stanford University.
Dr. Sen’s general clinical interests are in reconstructive surgery, microvascular surgery, and hand and upper extremity surgery. His practice includes: post-traumatic extremity reconstruction; post-oncologic reconstruction of the head and neck, trunk and extremities; perforator flap surgery; and melanoma surgery. He is medical director of the Advanced Wound Care Center at Stanford Health Care. As a hand surgeon in the Robert A. Chase Hand and Upper Limb Center, he has interests in hand trauma, degenerative conditions, peripheral nerve injuries, and complex upper extremity flap reconstruction.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Sen is involved in research, publication, and teaching. His peer-reviewed research includes studies on extremity reconstruction, peripheral nerve regeneration, and he has authored a number of book chapters on a variety of plastic and hand surgery topics. He has a strong interest in medical device innovation and is currently a faculty fellow in the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign.
Dr. Sen is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery. -
Austin Sendek
Adjunct Professor, Materials Science and Engineering
BioAustin Sendek is Adjunct Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at Stanford University. His research and teaching focuses broadly on harnessing the power of machine learning and A.I. to accelerate the design and discovery of new materials for decarbonizing the global economy. He serves as an advisor and collaborator on several initiatives at Stanford, spanning from fundamental materials science research to technology entrepreneurship mentoring. He is also the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Aionics, Inc., a technology company dedicated to designing high performance batteries with A.I. and high performance compute (HPC)-based quantum mechanical simulation. He was included on the 2019 list of Forbes 30 Under 30 in Energy, and served as a Guest Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University in 2019 and 2020. He holds a B.S. in Applied Physics from UC Davis and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University.

Debbie Senesky

BioDebbie G. Senesky is an Associate Professor at Stanford University in the Aeronautics and Astronautics Department and the Electrical Engineering Department. In addition, she is the Principal Investigator of the EXtreme Environment Microsystems Laboratory (XLab). Her research interests include the development of nanomaterials for extreme harsh environments, high-temperature electronics for Venus exploration, and microgravity synthesis of nanomaterials. In the past, she has held positions at GE Sensing (formerly known as NovaSensor), GE Global Research Center, and Hewlett Packard. She received the B.S. degree (2001) in mechanical engineering from the University of Southern California. She received the M.S. degree (2004) and Ph.D. degree (2007) in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Prof. Senesky is the Site Director of nano@stanford. She is currently the co-editor of two technical journals: IEEE Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems and Sensors. In recognition of her research, she received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2025, Emerging Leader Abie Award from AnitaB.org in 2018, Early Faculty Career Award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 2012, Gabilan Faculty Fellowship Award in 2012, and Sloan Ph.D. Fellowship from the Alfred P. David Sengthay

FLISSC Student Staff, First Generation Low IncomeBioDavid Sengthay is a community and electoral organizer from Stockton, California, committed to building power in underrepresented communities and advancing civic engagement at the local level. His work focuses on making local government more transparent, inclusive, and accountable through voter outreach, digital advocacy, and public demonstrations.
He has managed electoral campaigns in Stockton, including a City Council race that mobilized over 5,000 households in low-income neighborhoods of color. He has organized demonstrations supporting public education, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigrant justice, and built youth coalitions focused on reproductive wellness and culturally responsive mental health services. As a youth organizer, David centers the leadership and lived experiences of queer, Southeast Asian, and BIPOC communities—communities to which he belongs and remains deeply accountable.
At Stanford University, David serves as Chair of the Undergraduate Senate and previously led the Appropriations Committee, overseeing the allocation of over $6 million in student group funding. He also serves as the Director's Fellow at the First-Generation and/or Low-Income Student Success Center and coordinates new student programming for incoming FLI undergraduates. Across these roles, he works to ensure that students historically excluded from institutional decision-making are represented and empowered.
David is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with Honors (B.A.H.) in Urban Studies and a Master’s in Public Policy at Stanford University. Supported by Stanford’s VPUE Major Grant, he is conducting IRB-approved fieldwork in Stockton in partnership with Empowering Marginalized Asian Communities (EMAC). His honors thesis investigates restorative justice and the criminalization of Cambodian-American youth through a case study of Southeast Asian youth organizing. After graduation, David plans to return home to serve in local government—first as a Program Manager in Stockton’s Office of Economic Development, and eventually as an elected official. His long-term goal is to craft policy solutions that expand opportunity, counter disinformation, and restore trust between communities and the institutions meant to serve them. -

BioParna Sengupta is Associate Vice Provost and Director of Stanford Introductory Studies (SIS), under the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE).SIS curricular programs include: Civic, Liberal, and Global Education (COLLEGE) first-year requirement; The ESF (Education as Self-fashioning) program for first-year students; SLE and ITALIC, residential program for first-year students; the Introductory Seminars program offers 230+ seminars for first- and second-year students each year; Sophomore College and Arts Intensive which offer intensive seminar courses each year for returning sophomores during the first three weeks of September.
Parna arrived at Stanford in 2008 from Carleton College, where she was an associate professor in South Asian history. Parna’s book, Pedagogy for Religion: Missionary Education and the Fashioning of Hindus and Muslims in Bengal (UC Press, 2011), reveals the centrality of missionary models of schooling on the development of modern education, an influence that resulted in the reinforcement of religion and religious identity in colonial India. Her most recent project is on the early twentieth century feminist thinker Rokeya Hossain. -

I received a B.S./M.A. in Linguistics & Communication Studies from Northwestern University in 2022, where I worked with Rob Voigt and Annette D’Onofrio. Prior to starting my PhD, I worked as a teacher first in Taiwan through the Fulbright program and later in New York City. I have taught everything from TEFL and math to computer science and religion.
I’m broadly interested in how social and linguistic information is integrated. I use sociophonetic and computational methods in my research to shed light on the cognitive dynamics underlying language users’ utilization and perception of variation. My previous work has focused on variation in the uptake of new (pro)nominal forms on Twitter and in the stressed vowel of "Chicago." -

Assistant Professor (Research) of Ophthalmology
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsYasir's primary focus is on early identification of ocular diseases and objective assessment of response to therapy via biomarker (imaging and molecular) discovery and endpoints development for clinical trials. His lab is also developing and implementing protocols and methods to make decentralized clinical trials in ophthalmology viable.
Yasir is also engaged in developing low-tech, low cost and less intelligent solutions in order to improve patient's access to care.
