John Louis Sarrao

BioJohn Sarrao became SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s sixth director in October 2023. The lab’s ~2,000 staff advance the frontiers of science by exploring how the universe works at the biggest, smallest, and fastest scales and invent powerful tools used by scientists around the globe. SLAC’s research helps solve real-world problems and advances the interests of the nation. SLAC is operated by Stanford University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. It is home to three Office of Science national user facilities: the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), the world’s most powerful X-ray laser; the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL); and the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests, (FACET-II). SLAC hosts thousands of users each year and manages an annual budget of ~$700M. In addition to his role as lab director, John is a professor of photon science, and by courtesy, of materials science and engineering at Stanford University, a senior fellow at Stanford’s Precourt Institute, and dean of SLAC faculty.
John came to SLAC from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico, where he served as the deputy director for science, technology, and engineering. In that role, he led multiple directorates, including chemistry, earth and life sciences, global security, physical sciences, and simulation and computation. He also stewarded technology transitions and served as LANL’s chief research officer in support of its national security mission. Before becoming deputy director, he served as associate director for theory, simulation, and computation and division leader for materials physics and applications at LANL.
John’s scientific research focus is superconductivity in materials. He studies the synthesis and characterization of correlated electron systems, especially actinide materials. He won the 2013 Department of Energy’s E.O. Lawrence Award and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and LANL. John received his PhD and master’s degree in physics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a bachelor’s degree in physics from Stanford University. -

Richard Sassoon
Executive Director Strategic Energy Alliance, Precourt Institute for Energy
BioRichard E. Sassoon is the Executive Director of the Strategic Energy Alliance under the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford. Prior to this role, he was the Managing Director of the Global Climate and Energy Project (GECP) at Stanford since November 2003. Dr. Sassoon has over 30 years of research and management experience in the fields of physical and analytical chemistry, as well as energy sciences.
Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Sassoon was Senior Scientist and Assistant Vice President at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), where he led systems integration efforts for nanotechnology applications. For many years, he was a contractor to the Department of Energy supporting the strategic planning and management of its environmental programs, and its hydrogen and renewable energy activities.
Dr. Sassoon spent over a decade conducting research into photochemical solar energy conversion and storage systems, performing computer modeling of the catalytic processes involved in hydrogen production, and investigating technologies for cleanup of nuclear waste.
Dr. Sassoon received his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Leeds University in the UK, and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. He conducted his post-doctoral activities at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Sassoon has authored over 20 research papers in peer-reviewed journals, has received several awards including the Gabriel Stein award for outstanding research during his Ph.D. studies. -
Varsha Sivagami Sathappan

Kyoko Sato
Associate Director, Science, Technology and Society
BioKyoko Sato is Associate Director of the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at Stanford University. Her research examines technoscientific governance in Japan and the United States. Her areas of research include: the politics of expertise; nuclear politics; narratives and representation of nuclear technology and radiation protection; and Covid-19 governance. She co-edited (with Soraya Boudia and Bernadette Bensaude Vincent) Living in a Nuclear World: From Fukushima to Hiroshima, a 2022 interdisciplinary post-Fukushima reflection on the development of the global nuclear order. She has conducted fieldwork in various areas affected by nuclear technology (e.g., Fukushima, Hiroshima, Nagasaki; communities surrounding TMI, Hanford site, and other facilities; Church Rock) to examine the dynamics and relationships among global and national nuclear governance, expertise, and democratic citizenship. Her previous work examined interdisciplinary knowledge production in the United States and the politics of genetically modified food in France, Japan, and the United States. She has published in journals such as Science, Technology and Human Values; East Asian Science, Technology and Society; Theory and Society; and 科学技術社会論研究 (Journal of Science and Technology Studies; in Japanese) and book chapters on the Fukushima disaster both in English and in Japanese. She worked as a journalist in Tokyo before pursuing her PhD in sociology from Princeton University.

Ansuman Satpathy, MD, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab works at the interface of immunology, cancer biology, and genomics to study cellular and molecular mechanisms of the immune response to cancer. In particular, we are leveraging high-throughput genomic technologies to understand the dynamics of the tumor-specific T cell response to cancer antigens and immunotherapies (checkpoint blockade, CAR-T cells, and others). We are also interested in understanding the impact of immuno-editing on the heterogeneity and clonal evolution of cancer.

Neda Sattarnezhad Oskouei, MD, MS

BioDr. Neda Sattarnezhad Oskouei is a board-certified neurologist and neuroimmunologist specializing in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and neuroimmunological disorders, including Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO), MOG Antibody Disease (MOGAD), optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, autoimmune encephalitis, neuro-rheumatological conditions, and neuroinfectious diseases. Her research focuses on understanding the role of pathogens in triggering autoimmunity, with a particular emphasis on the role of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) in the development of MS.
Dr. Sattarnezhad earned her MD degree with honors from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. She completed a research fellowship in Multiple Sclerosis at the Brigham MS Center, Harvard Medical School, before pursuing her residency in adult neurology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She further specialized by completing a clinical fellowship in Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology at Stanford University as a Sylvia Lawry Fellow of the National MS Society, during which she also earned a master’s degree in Epidemiology and Clinical Research. She subsequently completed a fellowship in immunology and rheumatology at Stanford.
Her research and training have been supported by the National MS Society (NMSS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). -
Elizabeth Sattely
Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering
BioPlants have an extraordinary capacity to harvest atmospheric CO2 and sunlight for the production of energy-rich biopolymers, clinically used drugs, and other biologically active small molecules. The metabolic pathways that produce these compounds are key to developing sustainable biofuel feedstocks, protecting crops from pathogens, and discovering new natural-product based therapeutics for human disease. These applications motivate us to find new ways to elucidate and engineer plant metabolism. We use a multidisciplinary approach combining chemistry, enzymology, genetics, and metabolomics to tackle problems that include new methods for delignification of lignocellulosic biomass and the engineering of plant antibiotic biosynthesis.

BioDr. Anjali Bhatt Saxena, MD is a Clinical Professor of Medicine (Affiliated) at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Director of Peritoneal Dialysis at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California. She has served as the Medical Director for an independent Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Clinic in San Jose, CA since 2004, overseeing a large Peritoneal Dialysis clinic.
Dr. Saxena's clinical and research interests are in the area of home dialysis, including Peritoneal Dialysis and Home Hemodialysis. She is devoted to sharing her home dialysis expertise through research and education worldwide. She has been a key faculty member of Home Dialysis University (HDU) since 2007, providing home dialysis education to hundreds of US Nephrology Fellows and Nephrologists at all levels of experience; in 2024 she became HDU Program Director. She serves on the ASN Home Dialysis Steering Committee and is a founding member of the International Home Dialysis Consortium (ISN-ISPD). She has delivered numerous invited lectures at international meetings and has published scholarly work on PD in various peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Saxena is dedicated to the growth of PD worldwide; she is the immediate past-Treasurer for the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) and Past-President of the N. American Chapter of ISPD. She is an Educational Ambassador for the ISN, and with colleagues supported the growth of PD in low income areas of Sri Lanka. -
Parnika Prashasti Saxena
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioParnika Saxena is board certified in general and geriatric psychiatry. She completed her residency at St Elizabeth's Medical Center (affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine) in Massachusetts and a clinical geriatric fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles. She also worked as a research fellow in Clinical Psychopharmacology at Mclean Hospital (affiliated with Harvard Medical School) and also completed a psychoanalytic psychotherapy fellowship from the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Her primary research interests lie in pharmacological and interventional treatments for resistant depression. At Stanford, she works on the inpatient service, outpatient geropsychiatry clinic and the electroconvulsive therapy service. She also serves at the program director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship. In addition to her clinical and research interests, she is passionate about patient advocacy and promoting mental health legislative changes to benefit patient care and has testified in state senate hearings to that end as a physician representative of organizations like the Northern California Psychiatric Association and American Psychiatric Association.

Nazish Sayed MD, PhD
Associate Professor (Research) of Surgery (Vascular Surgery)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Sayed Laboratory is focused on the development of novel technologies that drive innovation in regenerative medicine, disease modeling, and drug testing in vascular biology. The lab conducts translational research in vascular biology and aims to understand the role of the vasculature in the development of cardiac diseases, including those due to inherited genetic variants or environmental insults such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension. The lab employs the human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology to generate patient-specific vascular cells (endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells) as an alternative to animal models providing a human tissue surrogate for research that is scalable and sustainable. By employing this unique platform, the lab also investigates the role of chemotherapeutic agents (anti-cancer drugs) on the vasculature. Dr. Sayed’s lab has also established an endothelial regeneration program, where they leverage the innate immune system to regenerate endothelial cells from human fibroblasts.
Work from the lab has led to seminal discoveries in the areas of 1) Nitric oxide (NO) biology, (2) vascular biology, (3) stem cell biology, (4) cardiovascular disease modeling (5) cardio-oncology. -
Michael Scahill

BioOn a trip to Mozambique while in med school here at Stanford, Dr Scahill saw the power of market interventions to transform healthcare. This led to his current focus on technology, data & AI. A veteran data scientist, his research trawls the oceans of data each patient generates for patterns to predict dangerous outcomes before they happen in Stanford's top level NICU, where he also still serves as a frontline clinician. Outside Stanford, he is the digital lead at Valley Children's hospital and advises health technology startups in Silicon Valley and beyond.
