Infrastructure to facilitate discovery of autism genes
The purpose of this project is to facilitate the discovery of the genes that contribute autism by maintaining an infrastructure which research groups studying the genetics of autism can work collaboratively. This will be
accomplished through workshops, a Virtual Private Network, and access to a database that includes phenotype and genotype data from all participating groups.

This will address several fundamental questions: (1) What is the heritability of autism (2) What is the contribution of genetic factors to variation in symptom dimensions? (3) Is there a continuum between the quantitative neurocognitive traits and clinical disorder? Gene, Brain and Behavior in Turner Syndrome(Reiss)
The primary objective of this project is to use advanced, multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, analyses of X chromosome parent-of-origin and cognitive-behavioral assessment to elucidate the effects of monosomy and X-linked imprinting on neurodevelopment and neural function in a large cohort of young girls with Turner syndrome, pre-estrogen replacement.

The goal of the project is to locate genes outside the HLA region that influence susceptibility to narcolepsy. In order to localize these genes we will carry out a linkage and association study in the most extensive world-wide collection of DNAs from well-characterized patients with narcolepsy and their families. -

Kate Hardy
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioKate Hardy is a California Licensed Psychologist who has specialized in working with individuals with psychosis for over 20 years in both research and clinical settings. Dr. Hardy received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom. She has worked in specialist early psychosis services in both the UK and the US, including UCSF’s Prodrome Assessment Research and Treatment (PART) program, where she completed her post-doctoral fellowship, and as Clinical Director for the Prevention and Recovery from Early Psychosis (PREP) program. Dr. Hardy is the co-director for the INSPIRE clinic at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, Stanford University and has significant experience in providing CBTp to individuals with early psychosis, and those at risk of developing psychosis, in both individual and group settings and integration of this clinical intervention to broader systems and staff teams. Dr. Hardy is also involved in the implementation of national strategies to increase dissemination of early psychosis models with the aim of bringing these cutting edge treatments to a broader population and is the co-editor of the book Intervening Early: A team approach.
Dr. Hardy is also the director of INSPIRE training and within this role has led multiple trainings and workshops in CBTp to a wide variety of audiences including community clinicians, psychiatrists, and families, and provides ongoing supervision and consultation in this approach. INSPIRE training offers training in evidence based interventions for psychosis to providers across diverse settings. In 2024 Dr. Hardy became president elect for IEPA: Intervening Early in Mental Health. -
Earth Hasassri, MD

BioDr. Earth Hasassri is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Child Development at Stanford University School of Medicine. He has a private practice in Menlo Park and teaches medical students, residents, and fellows at Stanford University School of Medicine. In his private practice, he specializes in seeing children and adults with complex psychiatric conditions such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, functional neurological disorders, those with epilepsy, and other neuropsychiatric conditions. His interests are caring for individuals who suffer from medical conditions at the interface of medicine and psychiatry.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Hasassri graduated with dual bachelor's degrees in neurophysiology and psychology at the University of California San Diego, where he performed research on sleep medicine. He earned his medical degree from the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine where he did research in clinical epidemiology. Dr. Hasassri completed his residency in general psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospitals & Clinics, during which he was awarded an Area of Distinction in Clinical Neuroscience for his work in applying neuroscientific principles in his clinical work in those with brain cancer, dementia, neurodevelopmental disorders, and other neuropsychiatric conditions. Dr. Hasassri is dual board certified in adult psychiatry and in child and adolescent psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties. -
Nancy A. Haug
Adjunct Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioNancy A. Haug, PhD is Adjunct Clinical Professor and Addiction Medicine fellowship program faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She currently leads didactics and a journal club for Addiction Medicine fellows, and teaches a postdoctoral seminar on ethics and legal issues for the Clinical Psychology Fellowship Program. Dr. Haug's primary academic affiliation is Professor of Psychology at Palo Alto University, where she teaches, advises and supervises doctoral students in the PAU-Stanford PsyD Consortium. Dr. Haug previously served as faculty and attending psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco, and taught in the University of California, Berkeley Alcohol & Drug Studies program. She obtained her PhD in Clinical Psychology and Behavioral Medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology at Loyola University, Maryland. She completed a clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at University of California, San Francisco and San Francisco General Hospital in public service and minority mental health.
Dr. Haug chairs the American Psychological Association (APA) Ethics Committee and formerly served on the California Psychological Association Ethics Committee. She is a Fellow, Member-at-Large for Practice, and President- Elect of the Society of Addiction Psychology (Division 50). Dr. Haug is on the editorial board of the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs and the Journal of Addictive Diseases. She was funded by SAMHSA for a practitioner-education initiative to expand training for evidence-based addiction treatment. Dr. Haug leads the Harm Reduction and Addiction Treatment Laboratory at PAU with current research studies on the implementation of evidence-based practices in addiction treatment, harm reduction for substance use, cannabis vaping and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.
Dr. Haug has been licensed as a psychologist in California since 2004, is board certified in addiction psychology by American Board of Professional Psychology, and has an independent practice in Los Gatos, CA. She has clinical expertise in treating substance misuse and eating disorders using motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Dr. Haug is a Stanford WellConnect referral for fellows, residents and faculty in her clinical practice. She completed the Stanford YogaX 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Program with healthcare setting emphasis. -

John P. Hegarty II

BioI am a neuroscientist and Principal Investigator of the Stanford Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) Lab in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as well as Director of Neuroimaging for the Autism and Developmental Disorders Research Program at Stanford. My innovative research studies clinical aspects of cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, with a special focus on examining the neural circuitry associated with important brain-behavior relationships that may underlie different psychological and psychiatric domains in autistic children, adolescents, and adults. The ultimate goal of this research is to improve our understanding of the development of different cognitive and behavioral skills in order to develop mechanistically driven interventions that will improve precision medicine for mental health. Biologically based diagnosis and treatment are extremely limited for most psychological and psychiatric conditions but also critically needed to increase early identification and improve treatment outcomes, especially for neurodevelopmental disorders in which early intervention is the most beneficial. My early career research has primarily focused on clinical neuroscience using neuroimaging (e.g., MRI & EEG) to examine the effects of different drugs and behavioral interventions on the brain, especially for developing biomarkers for improving treatment planning and monitoring biological changes in response to single dose and clinical trials.
My primary contributions to science thus far fall within these major categories: 1) identifying the neural correlates of individual differences in cognition and behavior, 2) developing new interventions and investigating the neurobiological substrates of response to treatment, 3) examining different factors that contribute to brain development, 4) summarizing and increasing accessibility to autism-related research, and 5) methods development for neuroimaging studies. My earliest research investigated the neurobiology of alexithymia, dyslexia, and stress using structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging to test theories of the mechanisms that contribute to differences in cognition and behavior. My subsequent dissertation research, in which I began to focus on neurodevelopmental disorders, examined the neural correlates of response to beta-blockers in autistic adults and also assessed the contribution of cerebellar circuits to the autism phenotype. During my postdoctoral training, I have developed further skills for working with children in multiple clinical research settings, especially for using advanced neuroimaging approaches to examine important brain-behavior relationships. This includes a recent K99/R00 from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NCT04278898 & NCT05664789) that will assess the neurobiology of restricted and repetitive behaviors in autistic children and examine the efficacy and target engagement of a novel nutritional supplement and investigational drug, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), in the brain. BioDr. Samantha Hemingway is a licensed, fellowship-trained clinical psychologist and clinical assistant professor in the Anxiety and Depression Adult Psychological Treatment (ADAPT) Clinic, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Hemingway specializes in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders, as well as anxiety and mood disorders. She has experience providing treatment in various levels of care settings, ranging from outpatient and intensive outpatient to partial hospitalization. Her work emphasizes evidence-based, high-quality, and personalized mental health care.
Dr Hemingway has published her research in several peer-reviewed journals, including International Journal of Psychological Research and Reviews and Journal of American College Health. She has also shared her expertise nationally and internationally at meetings of the American Psychological Association (APA), the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, and the Association for Psychological Science.

Kimberly Hill

BioDr. Hill received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Ohio University. She completed her doctoral internship at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System and postdoctoral fellowship in the Psychiatry Department at the Stanford University School of Medicine where she currently serves as a Clinical Professor. Dr. Hill has published articles and made presentations related to psychology training, pain management, serious mental illness including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and sexual dysfunction.
Dr. Hill's time is divided across clinical, research, administrative, and teaching domains. Her current clinical interests are varied including anxiety, mood disorders, relationship difficulties, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The bulk of her time is committed to psychology training as the Director of Clinical Training for the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium. On a national level, she currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). -

Melanie Hom

BioDr. Melanie Hom is a Clinical Associate Professor and attending psychologist in the Anxiety and Depression Adult Psychological Treatment (ADAPT) Clinic, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Clinic, and Stanford Mental Health for Asians Research and Treatment (SMHART) Clinic. She utilizes evidence-based therapies, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and DBT. Dr. Hom also strives to provide culturally informed psychotherapy in her work with individuals, couples, and families. Her research interests include (1) enhancing help-seeking and treatment engagement among individuals at elevated suicide risk and (2) improving mental health care services for Asians and Asian Americans.

David S. Hong

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Hong is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and clinician-scientist. His responsibilities span clinical care, teaching/mentorship, and research, with a unifying theme of advancing a developmental cognitive framework as applied to psychiatric conditions. Using this core premise, he work encompasses multiple domains: specialized clinical care, fellowship training, research mentorship, and elaborating the role of sex-specific determinants of development, one of the greatest contributors to individual developmental variation.
His lab investigates genetic and hormonal influences underlying sex differences in child psychiatric conditions. Sex has emerged as a critical variable driving differences in the phenomenology, course, and treatment of many mental health disorders. Unfortunately, an understanding of the biological mechanisms driving these effects are limited. By applying innovative neuroimaging and multiomic approaches, Dr. Hong seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the connection between sex-specific effects and complex psychiatric diseases. To do so, research in the Hong Lab focuses on the role of genes on the X and Y chromosomes, as well as circulating sex hormones on brain development, cognition, and behavior. The lab broadly aims to elucidate the changing nature of these mechanisms across various stages of development.
Another area of focus is the implementation of clinical informatics in child psychiatry and the development of digital mental health tools. As co-Director of the Mental Health Technology and Innovation Hub, Dr. Hong is helping to develop clinical and research infrastructure within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences to advance development of mobile mental health resources that will improve efficacy and access to mental health care. -
Janie Hong, Ph.D.

BioDr. Hong is invested in developing evidence-based ways to individualize care and address diversity factors in therapy and in training fellows and residents in these approaches. She has published and presented widely on these and other topics in psychology.
In clinical practice, she specializes in providing cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and other evidence based treatments. She is also committed to helping neurodiverse and culturally diverse individuals work with their differences, navigate prevailing social norms, and advocate for their needs as diverse individuals. -
Korey Hood

BioKorey Hood, PhD is personally and professionally committed to improving the lives of people with diabetes. As Professor and Staff Psychologist at Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Hood runs a behavioral science laboratory aimed at optimizing health and quality of life outcomes. A recipient of federal and foundation grants and author of over 200 scientific articles, Dr. Hood works to put behavioral science at the forefront of patient-centered diabetes care. Dr. Hood has type 1 diabetes himself and works across advocacy and service settings to promote awareness of diabetes treatments, the psychological impact, and emerging technologies. Dr. Hood is a compassionate behavioral scientist with a keen understanding of the intersection between diabetes and behavioral health.

Benjamin Joseph Hoover
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Medical Psychiatry
BioDr. Hoover graduated with a BS in Biology and a minor in Chemistry from Duke University. After his undergraduate studies, he joined the Leppla Laboratory at the National Institutes of Health as an Intramural Research Training Awardee. While there, he investigated the use of engineered anthrax toxin as a chemotherapeutic, and he graduated from the NIH Academy, with extensive coursework in health disparities. Then he returned to the Duke University School of Medicine, where he earned his MD in 2017. While in medical school, his interest in infectious disease evolved into curiosity about the gut-brain axis. He investigated gut sensation and its role in behavior using 3D electron microscopy, ultimately publishing a novel characterization of tuft cell ultrastructure.
Given his growing interest in behavior, Dr. Hoover pursued psychiatry residency at the MGH McLean program. During this time, he was accepted into the R-25 funded Physician Scientist Training Program and joined the Kahn Laboratory at the Joslin Diabetes Center. He employed an iPSC model to investigate the role of insulin signaling dysfunction in Alzheimer’s Disease pathogenesis. His clinical interests also began to focus on the intersection of medical and psychiatric disease. He served as a chief resident and won the Anne Alonso Award for Psychotherapy and the Residency Neuroscience Award. After residency, he was accepted into the MGH Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship.
After graduating from fellowship in 2022, Dr. Hoover joined the Stanford University School of Medicine faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. As part of the Medical Psychiatry division, he consults on hospitalized patients with psychiatric comorbidities within intensive care units and general medical and surgical floors. The interface between endocrinology and psychiatry remains a particular area of clinical and research interest, and he brings years of previous laboratory experience in this area to his clinical practice. -

BioValerie Hoover, PhD is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in California who specializes in the assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders, stress management and recovery, trauma and PTSD, interpersonal issues, and psychological adjustment following medical events. Dr. Hoover is also an expert in motivational enhancement and is a MINT-Certified Motivational Interviewing trainer.
Dr. Hoover completed a doctorate in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Health Psychology at the University of Florida in 2013, then went on to complete her clinical residency at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and post-doctoral fellowship at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

Hadi Hosseini

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab’s research portfolio crosses multiple disciplines including computational neuropsychiatry, cognitive neuroscience, multimodal neuroimaging and neurocognitive rehabilitation. Our computational neuropsychiatry research mainly involves investigating alterations in the organization of connectome in various neurodevelopmental and neurocognitive disorders using state of the art neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, sMRI, DWI, functional NIRS) combined with novel computational methods (graph theoretical and multivariate pattern analyses).
The ultimate goal of our research is to translate the findings from computational neuropsychiatry research toward developing personalized interventions. We have been developing personalized interventions that integrate computerized cognitive rehabilitation, real-time functional brain imaging and neurofeedback, as well as virtual reality (VR) tailored toward targeted rehabilitation of the affected brain networks in patients with neurocognitive disorders. -
Kristene Hossepian, Psy.D.

BioDr. Kristene Hossepian is a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in anxiety, depression, eating disorders, parent management training, and stress. During her doctorate training at the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium she received extensive training in a number of evidence-based treatment approaches for children and adolescents, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital/Children’s Health Council where she worked with youth struggling with severe eating disorders, chronic medical conditions, trauma, depression, and anxiety. After receiving her doctorate in 2020, Dr. Hossepian completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where she continued to receive training in evidence-based treatments for youth with a variety of presenting problems at the inpatient and outpatient level.
Currently, Dr. Hossepian is a Clinical Assistant Professor within the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She works alongside Dr. Mary Sanders and Dr. Jennifer Derenne at the Comprehensive Care Program serving children and adolescents who are medically compromised due to complications with their eating disorders. Additionally, Dr. Hossepian works within Dr. Victoria Cosgrove’s Stress, Resilience, Emotion, and Mood (StREam) Laboratory to identify the ways that psychobiological stress responsivity is implicated in the emergence and propagation of affective symptomatology. Dr. Hossepian is interested in exploring the physiological mechanisms underlying mood disorders and eating disorders as well as providing children and adolescents with novel emotion regulation strategies. -
Rona Hu

BioDr. Hu is Medical Director of the Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Unit at Stanford Hospital, specializing in the care of those with serious mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, bipolar and depression. She completed medical school and residency in psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, and fellowships in Pharmacology and Schizophrenia Research through the National Institutes of Health. She is also active in the minority issues and cultural psychiatry, and has received regional and national recognition for her clinical care, research and teaching.

Filza Hussain MD, FACLP

Clinical Associate Professor (By courtesy), Surgery - Abdominal TransplantationBioDr. Hussain completed her medical education in Karachi, Pakistan, at the Aga Khan University in 2005 and travelled to the US to pursue her interest in Psychiatry. During residency at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota she was awarded the Mayo clinic M.J Martin award for excellence in CL psychiatry. It was at Mayo that she solidified her interest and identity as a Consultation Liaison Psychiatrist. Eliminating Mind body dualism while educating others and addressing stigma against psychiatry seemed like an effortless choice and so she pursued a CL fellowship at Columbia University in New York.
Visa obligations took her first to the UK where she utilized her experience in evaluating CL service performance in large teaching hospitals in the NHS. She subsequently moved back to the US to serve as the sole outpatient provider for eleven different counties in Northwest Wisconsin with a panel of over 1500 patients at a Mayo clinic satellite. During this time, she was an active board member of NAMI, taught psychopathology in Crisis Intervention Training for the Eau Claire, and Chippewa Police departments and avidly contributed to international health blogs and newspaper articles with an aim to decrease stigma against psychiatry
In Pursuit of a stimulating academic environment and a return to her true passion, CL psychiatry, she joined Stanford as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2017. As member of the Education Committee and as of 2022, the CLP Fellowship Associate Program Director, She has been active in helping to restructure the fellowship education experience, initiating several new seminars including the immersion series, the book seminar, and organizing the Chief of service rounds. Her clinical focus is transplant psychiatry, and she serves as the liaison to the Liver and Kidney transplant programs at Stanford. She continues to be engaged with the community and currently participates in the Liver Education and Awareness Program(LEAP) , an endeavor educating patients about Fatty Liver disease. Dr. Itani’s research interests include medical education and patient compliance and education. Her other research interests have included sleep consequences of Prader-Willi syndrome and congenital central hypoventilation syndrome.

She also holds a master’s degree in mental health counseling and behavioral medicine from Boston University School of Medicine.
Anusha’s research and clinical work focus particularly on pediatric health psychology and anxiety. She has a strong commitment to supporting diverse youth and their families, especially those with complex medical conditions. Her training spans multiple specialties, including solid organ transplant, nephrology, endocrinology, genetic conditions, hematology, and oncology.

Agnieszka Kalinowski

BioI am a translational physician-scientist committed to understanding the pathophysiology of schizophrenia to identify disease-modifying therapeutic interventions. I examined the role of C4 protein activation in clinical samples from individuals with schizophrenia compared to controls, its relationship to C4 CNV and effect on blood brain barrier permeability using in vitro model systems. I contributed to identifying LINE-1 insertions in postmortem brain samples of individuals with schizophrenia and C4 copy number variation (CNV) in pediatric patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms. Since accumulating evidence points to the synapses as the locus of pathology in schizophrenia, I am focusing my current research effort to defining the underlying abnormality in synapses in schizophrenia using a combination of in vitro iPS based model systems and postmortem brain samples, and applying cutting-edge techniques like spatial transcriptomics and array tomography.

Danielle Kamis, MD

BioDr. Kamis completed her residency at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She has been published in multiple scientific journals working on studies of schizophrenia and sports psychiatry. Dr. Kamis co-edited the first book of its kind on a Manual of Sports Psychiatry after excelling in the sport of fencing at the University of Pennsylvania where she was a four-time NCAA championship qualifier, All American, Academic-All Ivy honoree, as well as captain of Penn’s fencing team. In addition, she has worked extensively with Dr. David Burns and his team in his extremely effective Cognitive Behavioral Therapy model and has worked with many noted Stanford Sleep Medicine physicians including Dr. Emmanual Mignot focusing on optimization of sleep. She has also concentrated her focus on women’s wellness as well as studied the practice of medical hypnosis. I am also on the Faculty of the Stanford Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program, where I teach and supervise post-graduate Fellows.
I have served an Examiner for the Medical Board of California and do Forensic Psychiatry/Expert Witness work for attorneys as part of my private practice for the past 15 years.
I have been in private practice for 35 years, including 15 years of virtual care. I am licensed in 10 states and can provide telepsychiatry services in all of those states.

Dr. Kary received their PhD in Counseling Psychology from the Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. They received their MA and BS from Santa Clara University in Counseling and Psychology, respectively. Their clinical internship was completed at the University of California, Los Angeles Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and their postdoctoral Gender and Sexual Identities fellowship at Stanford University CAPS. Dr. Kary serves patients through the THRIVE clinic at the Stanford School of Medicine and is emotion-focused, collaborative, and culturally-sensitive in their approach to psychotherapy. Debra Lee Kaysen

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMuch of my current research focus is on the development of testing of accessible, scaleable, and effective treatments for trauma-related disorders and related comorbidities (e.g. substance use disorders, HIV, mood disorders). This work has focused on addressing trauma-related disorders especially in underserved populations and settings. This includes research in rural communities, with Native American communities, and with sexual minorities. My research has had a strong impact on building an evidence base on adaptations of psychotherapies for PTSD and substance use disorders for diverse populations both within and outside the United States. Our findings demonstrate that complex cognitive behavioral psychotherapies like Cognitive Processing Therapy can be culturally adapted and delivered in challenging settings (conflict settings, high poverty environments) with significant and lasting change in PTSD, depression, and functioning. This has led to work adapting CPT for diverse populations within the United States (rural Native Americans, urban Latinos) and outside of it (Iraq, DRC). Other research has focused on treatment for PTSD/SUD. My research has also found support for the use of brief telehealth interventions to build treatment engagement and to reduce drinking among trauma-exposed populations. In addition, my work has been critical in testing the feasibility of novel trauma-focused interventions for use by those with PTSD and SUD, thus paving the road for more rigorous research studies.
Current PI'ed research studies include: 1) developing and evaluating a brief motivational interviewing intervention designed to increase treatment-seeking among military personnel with untreated PTSD; a two-arm randomized comparative effectiveness trial to evaluate prevention of HIV/STI sexual risk behavior by addressing PTSD through Narrative Exposure Therapy or substance use through Motivational Interviewing among Native American men and women with PTSD; and 3) a comparison of outcomes among patients randomized to initially receive pharmacotherapy or Written Exposure Therapy delivered in primary care as well as comparing outcomes among patients randomized to treatment sequences (i.e., switching and augmenting) for patients who do not respond to the initial treatment. -

BioAs a neuroscientist and psychiatrist, I am motivated by how little we understand about the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders and hope that further knowledge will help to alleviate the ongoing distress of many of our patients. My research program leverages computational genomics, human brain cellular models, and molecular neuroscience techniques to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of human brain development and how dysfunction in these processes lead to psychiatric disorders.

BioDr. Christina Khan is a pediatric and adult psychiatrist and Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She specializes in the treatment of trauma, depression, anxiety, LGBTQ+ health, and physician wellness. Dr. Khan’s training includes doctoral and postdoctoral research training in community and public health, including specialized training in global health and PTSD research and treatment. Her work focuses on addressing health disparities in underserved populations and treating vulnerable and marginalized populations here in the United States and abroad.
At Stanford, she is co-Chief of the Diversity and Cultural Mental Health Section in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and founder and Director of THRIVE, Stanford's LGBTQ+ mental health clinic. She has been working with WellConnect since 2014 addressing burnout, trauma, and secondary trauma in Stanford physicians. Dr. Khan is also a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH) and serves on the CIGH Program Leadership Committee.

Bora Kim, MD, MAS

BioDr. Bora Kim is a board-certified psychiatrist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. With a strong background in neuromodulation, clinical research, and psychiatric epidemiology, Dr. Kim specializes in the treatment of mood disorders, suicidality.
Dr. Kim completed her psychiatry residencies in both South Korea and the United States, providing her with a unique cross-cultural perspective on mental health care in both English and Korean. She holds a Master of Advanced Study (MAS) in Clinical Research from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she gained expertise in advanced epidemiologic and biostatistical methods. Her clinical expertise includes transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and other neuromodulation techniques for treatment-resistant depression and suicidality.
Dr. Kim’s research focuses on precision psychiatry, with a particular emphasis on the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to reduce suicidal ideation. As a faculty member at Stanford, she collaborates with the Brain Stimulation Lab to investigate novel applications of accelerated intermittent theta burst stimulation (aiTBS) in mood disorders and suicidality. -

Lynn Kern Koegel

BioDr. Lynn Kern Koegel has been active in the development of programs to improve communication in children with autism, including the development of first words, grammatical structures, pragmatics, and social conversation. In addition to her published books and articles in the area of communication and language development, she has developed and published procedures and field manuals in the area of self-management and functional analysis that are used in school districts and by parents throughout the United States, as well as translated in other major languages. Dr. Lynn Koegel is the author of Overcoming Autism and Growing Up on the Spectrum with parent Claire LaZebnik, published by Viking/Penguin and available in most bookstores. Lynn Koegel and her husband, Robert, are the developers of Pivotal Response Treatment which focuses on motivation. The Koegels have been the recipients of many awards, including the first annual Children’s Television Workshop Sesame Street Award for “Brightening the Lives of Children”, the first annual Autism Speaks award for “Science and Research” and the International ABA award for “enduring programmatic contributions in behavior analysis.” In addition, Dr. Lynn Koegel appeared on ABC’s hit show “Supernanny” working with a child with autism. Their work has also been showcased on ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and the Discovery Channel. Since her appointment at Stanford in 2015, Dr. Lahijani has served as the lead psychiatric oncologist at the Stanford Cancer Center, where she provides medical psychiatric consultation services and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes. In her capacity as Medical Director of the Stanford Cancer Center Psychosocial Oncology Program, a position she has held since 2019, she is responsible for the strategic development and implementation of comprehensive psychiatric services tailored to the unique needs of patients with cancer.
Additionally, Dr. Lahijani serves as the Section Chief of Psycho-Oncology in the Division of Medical Psychiatry where she oversees psych-onc faculty development and leads the training of medical psychiatry fellows in psycho-oncology. She also supervises advanced practice providers while also working as an attending psychiatric oncologist to provide care for patients with complex medical and psychiatric comorbidities across all hematology and oncology units.
Dr. Lahijani's academic credentials include her graduation from Brown Medical School, followed by the completion of a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center. After completing residency, she practiced internal medicine and psychiatry with a focus on triple diagnosis (HIV, addiction medicine, mental health). She then further advanced through a Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, during which time she received specialized training in psychiatric oncology at the Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Her clinical expertise encompasses psychopharmacology and a range of treatment modalities, including Meaning Centered Psychotherapy and Dignity Therapy. Dr. Lahijani is deeply committed to fostering relationship-centered skills and promoting provider wellness. As a faculty member of Advancing Communication Excellence at Stanford, she has led workshops designed to enhance communication competencies among faculty and staff.
Dr. Lahijani's scholarly pursuits are at the intersection of medicine and psychiatry, with a particular emphasis on the neuropsychiatric sequelae of cancer treatment, innovations in care, and medical education. BioDr. Dany Lamothe is a board-certified, fellowship-trained psychiatrist with Stanford Health Care Gastrointestinal Behavioral Medicine. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Division of Medical Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the lead psychiatrist in the Gastrointestinal Behavioral Medicine Program and the medical director of psychiatric emergency services at Stanford Health Care. In addition, Dr. Lamothe is a supervisor of the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic.
Dr. Lamothe specializes in addressing emotional, behavioral, and psychological factors that contribute to persistent gastrointestinal symptoms. He uses evidence-based therapies and medication management to help improve his patients’ quality of life.
Dr. Lamothe’s research interests include health anxiety, nutritional support outcomes in patients with gastroparesis, and integrative care models for disorders of gut-brain interaction.
Dr. Lamothe has published his research in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, the Canadian Journal of Bioethics, and General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. BioDr. Lazarow is a licensed psychologist who specializes in providing clinical care for individuals and couples dealing with acute and chronic medical conditions. She received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium and completed her clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at California Pacific Medical Center in the Health Psychology track. Dr. Lazarow is currently serving patients of the Neuropsychiatry Clinic at Stanford University's School of Medicine. In addition to providing individual and couples therapy, Dr. Lazarow has created multiple therapy groups specifically designed for individuals dealing with neurological conditions.

I am also interested in the interplay between fundamental statistical properties (e.g. variability, bias, p-values) & how scientists actually use & interpret data. My work in statistical genetics includes: the invention of Plaid bi-clustering for gene expression data; methods for twin, association, & family studies; multiple testing & estimation for high dimensional arrays.
