Salaar Ahmed

BioSalaar Ahmed is a postdoctoral research scholar in Ramayya’s Lab in the Department of Neurological Surgery at Stanford University. His research focuses on the mechanisms and novel treatments for chronic and cancer pain, neuro modulation, and global neurosurgery.
He earned his MD from Aga Khan University in January 2026, graduating summa cum laude with a record 15 honors and 18 university awards across all courses. During medical school, he conducted research on Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas (DIPG) and global neurosurgical outcomes under the mentorship of Dr. Ather Enam and Dr. Naureen Mushtaq.
Salaar previously served as President of the student wing of Child Protection Services (CPS) at Aga Khan University Hospital and co-founded the Student Neurosurgery and Oncology Research Consortium (SNORC) to facilitate neurosurgery research opportunities for medical students. -
Tazbir Ahmed
Postdoctoral Scholar, Ophthalmology
BioDr. Tazbir Ahmed is a clinician-scientist with a focus on neuro-ophthalmology and vision science, bringing expertise in translational research, clinical trials, and medical education. He obtained his medical degree and licensure through the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council and achieved board certification in Ophthalmology from the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Motivated by a deep interest in ocular neurodegeneration, inflammation, and metabolic eye disorders, Dr. Ahmed pursued a PhD in Ophthalmology at the University of Tokyo School of Medicine. His doctoral research explored the use of biologics, ocular devices, and experimental models of inflammation to investigate retinal and optic nerve changes in glaucoma, optic neuropathies, and age-related visual decline.
Dr. Ahmed’s multidisciplinary research integrates preclinical disease models, neuroimaging, ocular histochemistry, omics technologies, and electrophysiological methods to elucidate mechanisms of visual pathway dysfunction. He also leverages data science tools to address key issues in ocular public health. -

Maryam Amirahmadi

BioDr. Maryam Amirahmadi is a microsurgery expert and postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. She obtained her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Hamadan University of Medical Sciences. After more than a year of experience as a Family and Emergency Physician, she spent around 4 years at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences where she served as a pediatric and adult Cardiac Intensive Care physician and received training in cardiovascular surgery at Namazi and Faghihi hospitals. She then spent a year in the Department of Vascular Surgery at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, serving as a postdoctoral researcher and performing microsurgery on animals, with her research focused on therapeutic strategies to improve neovascularization after limb ischemia. Dr. Amirahmadi joined Stanford Cardiovascular Institute in 2022 where she is now a postdoctoral research fellow under the supervision of Prof. Philip S. Tsao, a renowned cardiovascular scientist. Her research interests and practical expertise include Microsurgery, and the effect of e-cigarette vaping on factors of inflammatory or immune pathways that can subsequently be related to the molecular mechanisms involved in angiogenesis and arteriogenesis in the murine model of hindlimb ischemia, as well as the mechanisms of e-cigarette and nicotine’s effects in augmenting Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) in rodent models of aortic aneurysm, including porcine pancreatic elastase-induced AAA. Dr. Maryam Amirahmadi and her colleagues are currently investigating the transgenerational effects of vaping/nicotine on abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) risk.

BioDr. Shivesh Anand is an NWO Rubicon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University, specializing in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. He completed his PhD at the MERLN Institute (Maastricht, Netherlands), where he applied biomaterials, biofabrication, and biomodulation strategies to develop nano-engineered scaffolds for tympanic membrane regeneration. He completed his residency in Radiology at the University of São Paulo, where he was awarded the Guerbet-InRad Best Resident Award and received the CBR/ESOR Europe Scholarship for complementary training in Neuroradiology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, University of Cambridge, during his final year.
Following his residency, Mateus served as a Radiologist in the Ultrasound Section of the Institute of Radiology (InRad) at the University of São Paulo. In this role, he was engaged in clinical and research activities involving Doppler ultrasound and transcranial ultrasound in adult patients. His work was closely aligned with innovation-driven projects in neuroimaging and artificial intelligence, and he also participated in academic and teaching initiatives for medical students and residents. -

BioDr. Asare-Bediako is a Ghanaian-trained Optometrist who started his career as a Teaching/Research Assistant at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. He obtained a doctorate degree in Vision Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, US, where he worked on animal models of diabetic retinopathy and hematopoiesis in Prof. Maria Grant’s lab. Currently, he is a postdoctoral scholar in Prof. Mary Elizabeth Hartnett’s lab studying retinopathy of prematurity. His current interests lie in understanding mechanisms of angiogenesis in retinopathy of prematurity and diabetic retinopathy.

Amirsaman Ashtari

BioI am a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University, jointly supervised by Ash Alizadeh MD/PhD and Mohammad Shahrokh Esfahani PhD. I developed several AI solutions for the Computer Vision and Computer Graphic domains during my PhD studies at KAIST and ETH Zurich. My PhD research outcome was recognized by winning the Young Researcher Award, and I was eager to apply all those AI techniques to biological data for cancer therapy. In the Alizadeh and Esfahani labs, I will develop AI solutions and computational tools to better understand the tumor microenvironment. Outside of my research, I enjoy loving my family, playing the piano, and listening to music.

Aya Awad

BioI am a postdoctoral fellow at the Stanford Cancer Institute in the laboratory of Steven Artandi, where my research focuses on telomere biology and telomerase regulation in cancer. My work integrates molecular genetics, biochemistry, and cell-based approaches to understand how dysregulation of telomere maintenance promotes genome instability and tumorigenesis.
I received my PhD in Genetics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where my doctoral research examined the molecular mechanisms by which telomerase activity and telomere structure are regulated at chromosome ends. Through mechanistic studies combining patient-derived cells and molecular analyses, I contributed to defining how telomere elongation and overhang dynamics are controlled.
At Stanford, my research centers on identifying regulatory pathways that control telomerase RNA maturation and activity, with a particular interest in discovering and characterizing small-molecule inhibitors targeting the telomerase pathway as potential cancer therapeutics. More broadly, I aim to translate fundamental insights in telomere biology into strategies for selectively targeting telomere maintenance mechanisms in cancer. -

Gastón A. Ayubi

BioGastón A. Ayubi completed his undergraduate studies in physics and electrical engineering, followed by PhD studies in physics at the University of the Republic of Uruguay. As an undergraduate student, in 2008 he started collaborating at the Department of Physics, where he developed a strong interest in phase imaging techniques. In 2022 he joined Stanford University as a postdoc. His role is to develop and test phase contrast imaging methods for both microscopy and retinal imaging.

Florian Bach

BioI'm a molecular infection biologist by training, but shifted my focus from pathogens to hosts for my graduate research. During my PhD with Phil Spence in Edinburgh I studied both falciparum and vivax malaria using controlled human (re)infection models, collaborating closely with the groups of Simon Draper and Angela Minassian in Oxford. As a hybrid bioinformatician and experimentalist, I love systems immunology for answering complex questions about human health. For my postdoc, I study in how the human immune response to malaria evolves in infants as they become reinfected and age. I'm also interested in how such early-life immunological events, malaria and beyond, may affect vaccine responses and immune development later in life. I address this question by making use of a longitudinal study cohort of infants receiving monthly chemoprevention in Eastern Uganda, together with our collaborators at UC San Francisco and IDRC Uganda.

BioDr. Stephanie Balters is a neuroscientist, educator, and innovator dedicated to advancing team flourishing and excellence. She directs the Empowerment Neuroscience Lab in Stanford Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, serves as Director of Research at Stanford’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE), and is Scientific Lead of the Stanford Belonging Project. Her research employs portable dual-brain neuroimaging (fNIRS hyperscanning) and advanced computational modeling to elucidate the neural and inter-brain signatures of high-impact, purpose-aligned teams. She also develops and tests targeted, evidence-based interventions that measurably strengthen connection, collaboration, and performance. Partnering across Stanford Medicine, the Graduate School of Business, and Stanford Athletics, Dr. Balters translates biomarkers of human connection into simple, repeatable practices that leaders can train and track over time—turning the neuroscience of connection into a practical engine for culture change. Alison Barrett

BioI'm an all-in-one biochemist, cell-culturist, and human-health enthusiast whose interests include therapeutics development, and tools for medical diagnostics.
I strive to maintain a healthy balance of breadth and depth in my areas of expertise, and have a strong affinity to interdisciplinary approaches. My background includes software development within the protein structure prediction module of the Rosetta software suite, design and initial development of cancer therapeutics, and basic research into understanding the mechanistic details of cell-cycle gene regulation.
My current research within the Tobias Lanz Lab aims to understand the role of certain targets of autoimmunity in Multiple Sclerosis and use this understanding to develop therapies and diagnostic aides. -
Shania Danielle Bayley

BioDr. Shania Bayley is a Postdoctoral Scholar on the Autism Spectrum Disorders track at Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She earned her Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University Maryland, where her training was specialized in child and adolescent psychology with a strong emphasis on neurodevelopmental disorders, trauma-informed care, and early relational health.
She completed her predoctoral internship at WestCoast Children’s Clinic in Oakland, California. Her clinical interests include diagnostic assessment of autism spectrum disorder, parent-child relational dynamics, and attachment-based interventions in marginalized communities. She has received training in psychodiagnostic testing and has experience providing therapy to children, adolescents, and families across school, community, and hospital settings. -
Samuel Beuret

BioI received the B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2016, 2019, and 2024, respectively. After working as an Ultrasound Engineer at E-Scopics, Aix-en-Provence, France, I joined the Ultrasound Imaging and Instrumentation Lab of the Department of Radiology as a Postdoctoral Scholar in 2025. My research interests include signal processing, inverse problems, and probabilistic modeling applied to pulse-echo ultrasound imaging. My current work focuses on improving pulse-echo speed-of-sound imaging and distributed aberration correction.
