Jonathan Yong Lee (Jon Lee)

BioDr. Jon Lee, MD, MBA is a Health Policy (Health Economics) PhD candidate, Economics PhD minor candidate, and Political Science MA student. In addition, Jon Lee is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Depression Clinic of Stanford University where he founded the "Am I Good? Examining life through the lenses of Philosophical Skepticism, Moral Philosophy, and Existentialism" philosophical psychotherapy group.
Jon Lee's research focuses on the causes and consequences of, as well as solutions to, rising skepticism and distrust in sources of expert information (e.g., science, health). He has a special interest in exploring skepticism and persuasion at the intersection of health and politics, which includes studying phenomena such as the politicization of science and health, political polarization, filter bubbles/echo chambers, the emerging post-truth world, and information warfare. It also includes seeking heteorgeneity in the findings across particular demographics at high socioeconomic and health risk. He draws on theories and methods from his uniquely interdisciplinary set of educational, research, and professional experiences, including those from experimental and behavioral economics, political science, psychology, philosophy, and machine learning. He is currently using machine learning-based text analytics to explore how trust/distrust in sources of expert information is discussed on traditional and social media -- followed by the use of online randomized controlled survey experiments to test the causal effects of particular persuasion strategies on perceptions of trust/distrust, as well as other important behavioral outcomes of interest.
Jon Lee uses a clinical approach that consists of the use of both psychopharmacological and individual/group psychotherapeutic interventions to address depression, dissatisfaction, and unhappiness. Referred to by some as philosophical psychiatry, philosophical therapy, philosophical counseling, or philosophical psychology, Jon Lee's approach to psychotherapy/counseling begins with the building of one's worldview / lens from a first principles perspective by asking the fundamental questions posed by philosophers and scientists spanning philosophical / intellectual traditions across time, including:

The long-term goal is to be able to better target treatments to specific deficits in order to promote long-term health and well-being and improve outcomes that matter to individuals and families suffering from these disorders.

Anna Lembke, MD

BioDr. Anna Lembke received her undergraduate degree in Humanities from Yale University and her medical degree from Stanford University. She is currently Professor and Medical Director of Addiction Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine. She is also Program Director of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Fellowship, Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic, and a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Addiction Medicine.
In 2016, she published "Drug Dealer, MD – How Doctors Were Duped, Patients Got Hooked, and Why It’s So Hard to Stop" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2016), highlighted in the New York Times as one of the top five books to read to understand the opioid epidemic (Zuger, 2018).
Dr. Lembke appeared in the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma, an unvarnished look at the impact of social media on our lives.
Her latest book, "Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence" (Dutton/Penguin Random House, August 2021) was an instant New York Times and Los Angeles Times bestseller and has been translated into 30 languages. It combines the neuroscience of addiction with the wisdom of recovery to explore the problem of compulsive overconsumption in a dopamine-overloaded world. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Levinson directs the Program on the Genetics of Brain Function in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The program investigates the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia and major depressive disorder), using genetic association, linkage and resequencing methodologies. In collaboration with Dr. Alice Whittemore, we are also actively engaged in statistical methods testing and development for genetic research.

Jill T. Levitt

BioDr. Jill Levitt is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and the Director of Training at the Feeling Good Institute in Mountain View, CA. She has more than 25 years of experience conducting Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and has been trained by some of the world’s leaders in CBT. Dr. Levitt graduated Summa Cum Laude with honors in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Boston University where she was mentored by Dr. David Barlow. She has co-written several scholarly articles in the areas of OCD, PTSD and Panic Disorder. Most recently she has been co-teaching CBT with Dr. David Burns at the Stanford University School of Medicine in her role on the Adjunct Clinical Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Levitt teaches both in-person and online workshops for the Feeling Good Institute on CBT methods, reducing resistance in psychotherapy, and improving the effectiveness of psychotherapy. She is passionate about helping people overcome depression and anxiety efficiently using CBT.

BioDr. Minyin Li is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine. His main research interests are genetic and cellular mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders including autism and schizophrenia. By using iPS cell derived brain organoid technology, he anticipates novel approaches to interrogate autism and neurodevelopmental diseases with human disease models.

BioDr. Luce is a Psychologist and Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine. She received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Kent State University. She completed a pre-doctoral internship at the Seattle Veterans Hospital and a post-doctoral research fellowship at Stanford University in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Her current research focus are modern statistical methods and deep learning techniques for mining (multivariate) intensive longitudinal data especially psychological/behavioral measures collected by mobile/wearable devices. Michelle Madore, Ph.D.

Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated), Psych/Public Mental Health & Population SciencesBioDr. Madore is multiracial, Filipina woman working as a Clinical Neuropsychologist at VA Palo Alto Healthcare System (VAPAHCS) in the Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC). Here she serves as the Director of the National Clinical Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Program whose mission is to: 1) increase the availability of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for treatment-resistant depression in Veterans and (2) gain a greater understanding of the treatment efficacy of TMS in our complex Veteran population. She is also the Co-Director of the Sierra Pacific MIRECC Advanced Fellowship at VAPAHCS. Dr. Madore is the site PI on two multi-site funded studies looking at neuroimaging biomarkers of treatment response to TMS in treatment-resistant depression. Dr. Madore is also a Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated) at Stanford University School of Medicine’s Department in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
She received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Cincinnati, where she received specialized training in neuropsychology. Dr. Madore completed her pre-doctoral internship at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). She has completed postdoctoral training focused on clinical neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation research at VA Martinez, San Francisco VA Medical Center and VAPAHCS.
Dr. Madore is involved in several professional organizations and serves in several leadership positions. She is the Society of Clinical Neuropsychology Secretary and Treasurer for the Teleneuropsychology and Digital Technologies Special Interest Group of the International Neuropsychological Society. -

BioMaryam Sarah Makowski, PhD, is a Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford University in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Makowski is actively involved in the WellConnect Program and Lifestyle and Metabolic Psychiatry Clinics. She also serves as the Associate Director of Scholarship and Health Promotion for the Stanford Medicine WellMD & WellPhD program. Using evidence-based strategies, Dr. Makowski empowers her clients to optimize their well-being, self-compassion, energy, focus, and mental sharpness for peak performance. Her research focuses on exploring the impact of micro- and macro-nutrients, meal composition, and timing on cognitive function, mood, mental sharpness, and eating behaviors of professionals with high cognitive and physical demands, especially physicians.
Maryam earned her master's and doctoral degrees in clinical nutrition, nutritional epidemiology, and medical science from the University of Toronto. Before joining Stanford, she worked as a scientific associate at Toronto General Hospital-University Health Network and advised Air Canada rouge pilots and cabin crew on nutrition for fatigue management. BioBrittany Matheson, PhD, is a clinical assistant professor and licensed clinical psychologist in the Eating Disorders Clinic. She completed her undergraduate degree at Duke University, doctorate from the Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego, and APA clinical internship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford/Children’s Health Council. Dr. Matheson's research interests include examining the psychosocial, neurocognitive, and familial factors related to disordered eating and excess weight gain in youth. In particular, Dr. Matheson has research and clinical expertise in the interplay among obesity, disordered eating, and autism spectrum disorder. She is interested in the development and implementation of evidence-based treatments for youth with disordered eating as well as better understanding factors that influence pediatric bariatric surgery outcomes. Her research also focuses on the use of technology to enhance treatment and reduce access to care barriers.

Ryan Matlow

BioRyan Matlow, Ph.D., is a child clinical psychologist who serves as Director of Community Programs for Stanford’s Early Life Stress and Resilience Program, and is a faculty member in Stanford's Human Rights and Trauma Mental Health Program. His clinical and research efforts focus on understanding and addressing the impact of stress, adversity, and trauma in children, families, and communities. In particular, Dr. Matlow seeks to apply current scientific knowledge of the neurobiological and developmental impact of stress, trauma, and adversity in shaping interventions and systems of care. Dr. Matlow is focused on engaging diverse populations and providing evidence-based individual, family, and systems interventions for posttraumatic stress following interpersonal trauma, with an emphasis on efforts in school, community, and integrated care settings. He is engaged in clinical service, program development, and interdisciplinary collaboration efforts that address childhood trauma exposure in communities that have been historically marginalized, under-resourced, and/or experienced human rights violations. He has worked extensively in providing trauma-focused psychological evaluation, treatment, and advocacy services with immigrant youth and families, with a focus on immigrants from Latin American countries. Dr. Matlow is involved in the training and dissemination of Stanford's Cue Centered Therapy (Carrion, 2015), a flexible, manualized intervention addressing childhood experiences of chronic trauma.

Mark McGovern

BioDr. Mark McGovern is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and, by courtesy, the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Most people who need health care do not receive it. And of those who do, wide variation exists in the quality of the care they receive. Gaps in health care access and quality are worse for certain groups, such as underrepresented minorities and persons living in low-resourced urban and rural areas, and/or in poverty. Enormous disparities exist in health care systems, both private and public. Dr. McGovern is a leader in using rigorous methods of dissemination and implementation (D&I) science to close these gaps in equitable health care delivery.
His mission is to get the best health care possible to the people who need it the most.
Dr. McGovern's primary focus is the implementation and sustainment of evidence-based interventions and guideline adherent care in public and private health care systems and organizations. Within the hub of the Center for Dissemination and Implementation (CDI) which he directs, Dr. McGovern is the Principal Investigator (PI) and leads three national dissemination and implementation (D&I) centers: The Center for Dissemination and Implementation At Stanford (C-DIAS); The Research Adoption Support Center (RASC); and, the Mental Health Technology Transfer Center Network Coordinating Center (MHTTC). The 3 centers are federally-funded, respectively by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (P50DA05402), the National Institutes of Health Healing Addiction Long Term (HEAL) initiative (U2CDA057717), and the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Use and Mental Health Services Administration (H79SM081726). Dr. McGovern is also the PI on a multi-site adaptive implementation trial across a state system of care, which aims to integrate addiction medications for persons with opioid use disorder who are receiving services in specialty or primary care organizations (R01DA052975). In addition, he conducts D&I research and practice projects in federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs) across the State of California, in the Stanford Division of Primary Care and Population Health, and in specialty addiction and mental health treatment organizations nationwide. He leads, facilitates and/or actively engages networks advancing D&I science in health, including the NIDA Clinical Trials Network Translation & Implementation Special Interest Group, the NIDA Clinical Trials Western States Node Translation & Implementation Workgroup, the Stanford University Network for Dissemination & Implementation Research (SUNDIR), the VA Palo Alto HSR&D Center for Innovation to Implementation, and the Stanford Medicine Center for Improvement. He is on the Core Faculty of the National Institute of Mental Health Implementation Research Institute at the Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. McGovern is a collaborator on multiple projects as a co-investigator, consultant, or advisory board member. He is a mentor to numerous individuals across the country and at Stanford, from university undergraduates to mid-career faculty and clinical administrators at academic institutions and health care systems nationwide. -

Windy McNerney is the Director of Biological Sciences for the MIRECC at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto, and a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) at Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. McNerney holds a particular passion for not only understanding the neurophysiology and biochemistry of mental health diseases, but also advocating for these invisible diseases. Her research focuses on neurodegeneration, depression, TBI, PTSD, and addiction. She is collaborating with researchers to integrate brain imaging and biochemical markers in hopes to better understand these diseases. She also is taking a lead role at the VA in investigating the biochemistry of magnetic brain stimulation and is the leader of the NeuroNado Laboratory. At Stanford University, she is the professor of two popular courses examining the biological and societal issues surrounding substance use disorder, with a major focus on opioids such as fentanyl. She has individually mentored over 25 students from underrepresented groups in STEM activities and leads monthly seminars aimed at facilitating career development. In her free time, she is a community advocate for the treatment of mental health and educates groups about the dangers of fentanyl.
She earned her BS from UC Davis and her PhD from the University of Notre Dame. While at ND, she interned at NASA Ames on Human Factors Engineering. She then went on to a postdoctoral position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (DOE), and then completed a fellowship at the WRIISC program at the VA and Stanford University.
