Christina Young
Instructor, Neurology & Neurological Sciences
BioDr. Christina Young obtained her PhD in Clinical Psychology as well as her MS in Statistics at Northwestern University. She completed her predoctoral internship at the University of Illinois Chicago where she specialized in neuropsychology. She continued her neuropsychology training as well as her research during her postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University.
Dr. Young's research focuses on identifying real-world declines in cognition that track with the pathological changes in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias. Her work incorporates novel measures of cognition as well as neuroimaging to improve the detection and monitoring of early cognitive decline in the context of AD and related dementias. She has been awarded grant funding through a K99/R00 from the NIH and an Alzheimer's Association Research Fellowship to Promote Diversity (AARF-D) from the Alzheimer's Association. -
Peter A Young

BioAs a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Dermatology, I am fortunate to have world-class mentors and colleagues who are committed to a collaborative approach to research. Having a family history of melanoma, I am passionate about investigating skin cancers and other skin conditions. In 2022, I was named Dermatology PA of the Year by the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, a national organization with over 4,700 members.
I have co-authored 30 academic publications on a variety of topics including dermatologic surgery, rare skin conditions, allergen content of skin care products, and the state of diversity within the dermatology profession. My writing has appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Cutis, and elsewhere. My work has also been cited in UpToDate- the world’s most widely used evidence-based encyclopedia for medical professionals.
Most importantly, I believe in exercising empathy and compassion, taking the time to listen to patients as if they were family. To me, there is no greater responsibility or privilege than to be trusted with another person’s health. -
Shady Younis
Instructor, Medicine - Immunology & Rheumatology
BioShady Younis, PhD is an instructor at the division of Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University. He received his PhD in Medical Sciences from Uppsala University in Sweden. He later joined Dr. William Robinson’s Lab at Stanford University as Wallenberg postdoctoral fellow, where he characterized the pathogenic role of cytotoxic CD8+ T cells in rheumatoid arthritis. His current research aimed at elucidating the underlying triggers of pathogenic B cell responses in a spectrum of autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and multiple sclerosis (MS). He uses computational methodologies alongside cutting-edge high-throughput sequencing technologies to characterize the autoreactive B and T cells. The overarching research objective of his research is to unravel the mechanistic roles of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) reactivation in activating and transforming autoreactive B cells in the development of autoimmunity.

Alaa Talaat Youssef
Postdoctoral Scholar, Radiology
BioDr. Youssef is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Data Science and Population Health from the Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto, Canada in 2021. Her research addresses ethical considerations in AI development, aiming to promote responsible use of AI in healthcare. Using mixed-methods methodologies, she investigates the end-user experience with AI systems, identifying ethical and safety concerns related to integrating AI into clinical workflows. Dr. Youssef leads several AI educational programs and policy initiatives. She co-directs the Stanford AIMI High School Programs, preparing the next generation for careers that intersect AI and medicine. She also serves on several AI policy and education committees across the Stanford School of Medicine.

Charles Yu MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsCorneal opacity is a leading cause of blindness. Cornea transplantation is at high risk of rejection when there is pre-existing vascularization of the cornea and in pediatric patients. Cornea transplant shortage remains a worldwide problem with millions on waitlists. Our laboratory is developing multiple strategies for treatment of corneal blindness. We are testing advanced materials and designs for keratoprostheses with the goal of reducing complications and easing surgical implantation. We are also developing intraocular electronic display prostheses for bypassing cornea opacity, a novel strategy that could allow for high quality vision without corneal clarity.

Grace Chen Yu
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Yu is a modern-day version of the “old-fashioned family doc” who delights in caring for patients from “cradle to grave,” while also promoting the health of her community and developing the future leaders of family medicine. On any particular day, one might find her counseling a long-time smoker on quitting, draining an abscess in clinic, delivering a baby, doing a phone (or sometimes home) visit with one of her elderly patients, lecturing about High-Value Health Care, facilitating a diabetes group visit, singing the praises of coordinated primary care to politicians, discussing end-of-life options with a hospitalized patient, or sharing some of her stories as mother-doctor-teacher with one of her advisees. In 2016, adding one more hat to the mix, Dr. Yu became Program Director of the 24-resident Stanford Health Care - O’Connor Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. Whereas the old-fashioned family doc was a master at caring for patients at different ages and stages of life, as a modern-day family physician, Dr. Yu is committed to researching ways to do so more effectively and efficiently. She considers it a privilege to be a part of her patients' lives and hopes to help both her patients and her trainees find a path to better health and happiness. To keep herself in great health, Dr. Yu enjoys playing the piano, photography, scuba diving, adventure travel (all the more adventurous with her three children in tow!), and spending time with her family and friends.

Linbo Yu
Clinical Instructor (Affiliated), Pediatrics - Genetics
BioLinbo Yu is a genetic counselor and a founding member of Stanford’s Genetic Testing Optimization Service (GTOS). She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2007 and her master’s degree in genetic counseling from the University of California, Irvine in 2009. She started her career at Ambry Genetics. In 2014, she became the first lab genetic counselor at Stanford Hospital and helped establish Genetic Testing Optimization Service (GTOS). As a passionate clinical liaison between Stanford Clinical Lab and the ordering providers at Stanford, some of her roles include assisting clinicians with selection of genetic tests, reviewing genetic test orders for clinical appropriateness and educating ordering providers about genetic diseases and test information. Linbo is also a clinical instructor of Department of Pediatrics, and she enjoys clinical supervision of genetic counseling students.

Muharrem Yunce, M.D.

BioDr. Yunce is board certified in internal medicine and transfusion medicine. He joined Stanford Health Care as a clinical fellow and completed his fellowship in July 2019. He has keen interest in patient blood management and applications of therapeutic apheresis in various disease processes.

Ilana Rachel Yurkiewicz

BioDr. Yurkiewicz is a primary care doctor with fellowship training and board certification in internal medicine, oncology, and hematology. She is a clinical assistant professor of primary care and population health in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
She provides expert, compassionate clinical care for patients, advocates for them as a medical journalist, and researches ways to improve their lives through better health and quality of life.
She has a special interest in cancer survivorship and improving transitions between oncology and primary care. Her practice is uniquely focused on providing comprehensive care for patients with a history of cancer as well as those carrying genetic diagnoses of elevated risk.
For each patient, her goal is to provide thoughtful, compassionate, and holistic care.
As a journalist, she strives to bridge the gaps between academic medicine and everyday lives. She has been a regular columnist for Scientific American and MDEdge. Her writing has appeared in numerous publications and been reprinted in The Atlantic and The Best American Science and Nature Writing anthology.
Dr. Yurkiewicz is the author of the book Fragmented: A Doctor’s Quest to Piece Together American Health Care from the publisher W.W. Norton.
She has co-authored research articles that appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Clinical Oncology, Genetics in Medicine, and other peer-reviewed publications. She also has served as an editorial board member of the journal Hematology News.
An additional interest of Dr. Yurkiewicz is bioethics. She interned with the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, conducted extensive research, and published her discoveries in the New England Journal of Medicine, Penn Bioethics Journal, and Ivy Journal of Ethics.
She has presented her research discoveries to her peers at meetings of the American Society of Hematology, Society of Hospital Medicine, National Society of Genetic Counselors, and elsewhere.
She is a member of the American College of Physicians and an associate member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Society of Hematology. -
Maya Yutsis

BioMaya Yutsis, Ph.D., ABPP-CN is a Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated) in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She is a neuropsychologist at the Stanford Alzheimer's Disease and Research Center (ADRC), Stanford Concussion and Sports Medicine Clinic, and Neuropsychology Service. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology at the Palo AltoUniversity in 2009, completed an APA approved clinical internship in neuropsychology at the Minneapolis VA Medical center and a two-year post doctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in 2011. She received her board certification in Clinical Neuropsychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology. Prior to coming to Stanford, she worked as a lead neuropsychologist at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation Program and Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) Telehealth Neuropsychology clinic and served as a director/preceptor of an APA-approved post-doctoral fellowship Neuropsychology Emphasis Area training program. She is currently a Newsletter Editor of the Society for Clinical Neuropsychology, APA Division 40. Her research interests focus on computerized assessment and interventions for persons with acquired brain injury, sport-related concussion, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Lisa Zaba, MD, PhD
Associate Professor of Dermatology
BioLisa Zaba M.D. Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Dermatology, and Director of the Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) multi-disciplinary clinic and member of the supportive oncodermatology group at the Stanford Cancer Center. She runs a lab focusing on the immunology of MCC and the treatment and prognostic implications of immune checkpoint inhibitor and targeted therapy rashes. Dr. Zaba completed medical school at Cornell University, PhD in immunology at Rockefeller University, Residency and Post-Doc at Stanford University in 2013.

Sanno Zack

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Zack is involved with ongoing research related to the treatment of adolescent and adult trauma (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - TF-CBT; Prolonged Exposure - PE), and the effective provision of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to adolescent girls and women with disorder of emotion regulation. She additionally studies Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for adolescent girls with anxiety. More broadly she is interested in the impact of Evidenced Based Treatments on improving quality of life, and helping individuals find the right match for clinical care. Research is conducted through the Early Life Stress and Pediatric Anxiety Disorders Program at Stanford Children's Hospital and the Stanford Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe 4T (Teamwork, Targets, Technology, and Tight Control) Exercise Study focuses on addressing the attitudes & barriers to exercise for families and newly diagnosed youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D). We are currently establishing feasibility and understanding physical activity patterns and behaviours in newly diagnosed youth with T1D using wearable activity trackers. This work also involves delivering structured exercise education to families and youth with T1D over telehealth.

Hengameh Zahed, MD, PhD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Neurology & Neurological Sciences
BioDr. Zahed is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurologist with the Stanford Medicine Movement Disorders Center. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences.
She diagnoses and treats a wide range of movement disorders including Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and ataxia. She creates a personalized treatment plan for each of her patients using a variety of treatment options, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological options, deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatment for Parkinson's disease and tremors, and botulinum toxin injections for movement disorders and spasticity.
Prior to joining Stanford University, Dr. Zahed completed a neurology residency and fellowship in movement disorders at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she also earned her MD and PhD in biomedical sciences. Dr. Zahed’s research interests include understanding the genetic and electrophysiological underpinnings of movement disorders and investigating applications of wearable technologies to monitor symptoms and improve the quality of life in patients with movement disorders. She also participates in clinical trials of new therapeutics for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
Dr. Zahed has published in Movement Disorders, Molecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, American Journal of Human Genetics, Cell, and other peer-reviewed journals. She has presented to her peers at international, national, and regional meetings. These meetings have included the International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders, the Hereditary Disease Foundation Symposium, the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, and the Society for Neuroscience.

Natalie M. Zahr
Assistant Professor (Research) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Major Laboratories)
BioNatalie M. Zahr received a graduate education in the basic sciences including the study of neuro- pharmacology, physiology, and anatomy. After completing her graduate training in electrophysiology, she began a postdoctoral fellowship as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scientist. Her work focuses on translational approaches using in vivo MR imaging and spectroscopy in studies of human with Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD) and in rodent models of alcohol exposure with the goal of identifying mechanisms of alcohol effects on the brain. Her human studies include participants with HIV, those co-morbid for HIV and AUD and recently, aging individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Her position allows her to explore emerging MR technologies and apply them to test relevant hypotheses. Before joining Stanford, she taught at several local institutions including UC Berkeley extension and Santa Clara University where she enjoyed sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for learning with students.

Yulia Zak, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Surgery - General Surgery
BioDr. Yulia Zak earned her medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center before completing general surgery residency at Stanford University and advanced minimally invasive gastrointestinal and bariatric fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Zak is certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. She has also completed the Stanford Surgical Education and Simulation fellowship and was previously an Assistant Program Director for the general surgery residency program at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Dr. Zak joined the faculty at Stanford in 2018 and is the current Fellowship Associate Program Director. Her current clinical practice is focused on bariatrics, foregut and abdominal wall procedures. Her academic interests include quality improvement, surgical education, and bariatric outcomes.

Cyril Zakka, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsCyril Zakka's research is primarily focused on building unsupervised deep learning representation learners for use in a variety of medical tasks, such as medical imaging (e.g. cardiac MRIs and echocardiograms), and autonomous robotic surgical systems. He is particularly interested in developing algorithms that augment operating physicians' capabilities in order to improve on patient outcomes post-operatively.

Sandra Zaky

BioDr. Zaky is a board certified Radiation Oncologist. She received a Bachelor’s of Science in Biomedical/Electrical Engineering at Marquette University. She worked in research and development as an Engineer, and eventually received a Masters of Science in Immunology from Albany Medical College. Her research thesis focused on a novel therapy to treat hormone-receptor positive breast cancer. She continued to study breast cancer with her research during her Radiation Oncology residency; she integrated her research in the laboratory with her clinical research in triple-negative breast cancer. Since completing residency, she has worked as a general radiation oncologist, and her special interests include breast cancer, skin cancer, CNS tumors and stereotactic radiotherapy.

Aroosa Zamarud, MD

BioDr. Aroosa Zamarud is a medical doctor who completed her undergraduate education at Bannu Medical College, Khyber Medical University, Pakistan. Following her graduation and a one-year medical internship, she served as a Medical Officer at Zubaida Khaliq Memorial Hospital, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan, a charitable institution. During her tenure, she organized medical camps in remote villages in Northern Pakistan, providing healthcare services to underprivileged populations.
In March 2022, Dr. Zamarud joined the Stanford Neurosurgery department as a Visiting Instructor. Her research primarily focused on Clinical Neurooncology, with a special emphasis on the use of Cyberknife stereotactic radiosurgery as a treatment modality for various benign and malignant brain pathologies, including Vestibular Schwannoma, Sarcoma, Spinal metastases, Meningioma, Pineal and Pituitary metastases, and Arteriovenous malformations.
Currently, Dr. Zamarud is serving as a postdoctoral fellow in neurointerventional Radiology. Her ongoing research centers on investigating the role of venous outflow in patients with acute ischemic stroke, among other stroke-related studies. -
Astrid Nicole Zamora
Postdoctoral Scholar, SCRDP/ Heart Disease Prevention
BioDr. Astrid N. Zamora is a public health researcher and epidemiologist. Her work has utilized robust birth cohort data to examine associations between diet and environmental pollutants with sleep and metabolic health outcomes among adolescents and midlife women.
Following her Master of Public Health degree at UC Berkeley School of Public Health, Dr. Zamora completed her PhD at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. As a doctoral trainee at Michigan, her dissertation research, funded by a Research Supplement to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research from NIH/NIEHS, focused on examining the interplay between exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, sleep, and metabolic health risk among pubertal adolescents and peri-menopausal women from Mexico City.
As a current NHLBI T32 postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Zamora is receiving training in RCT study design and citizen science methods, learning how to bridge her training in epidemiology with community-based research approaches, thereby ensuring that her research agenda maintains a meaningful connection to the community and its real-world context. The goal of her current research, bolstered by her previous and ongoing training, is to explore the interconnections between diet, the built environment, and physical activity. She is particularly focused on understanding how these factors relate to psychosocial and cardiometabolic health amongst Latinx communities across the life course. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research group is exploring a variety of topics that range from the basic understanding of chemical reaction dynamics to the nature of the chemical contents of single cells.
Under thermal conditions nature seems to hide the details of how elementary reactions occur through a series of averages over reagent velocity, internal energy, impact parameter, and orientation. To discover the effects of these variables on reactivity, it is necessary to carry out studies of chemical reactions far from equilibrium in which the states of the reactants are more sharply restricted and can be varied in a controlled manner. My research group is attempting to meet this tough experimental challenge through a number of laser techniques that prepare reactants in specific quantum states and probe the quantum state distributions of the resulting products. It is our belief that such state-to-state information gives the deepest insight into the forces that operate in the breaking of old bonds and the making of new ones.
Space does not permit a full description of these projects, and I earnestly invite correspondence. The following examples are representative:
The simplest of all neutral bimolecular reactions is the exchange reaction H H2 -> H2 H. We are studying this system and various isotopic cousins using a tunable UV laser pulse to photodissociate HBr (DBr) and hence create fast H (D) atoms of known translational energy in the presence of H2 and/or D2 and using a laser multiphoton ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer to detect the nascent molecular products in a quantum-state-specific manner by means of an imaging technique. It is expected that these product state distributions will provide a key test of the adequacy of various advanced theoretical schemes for modeling this reaction.
Analytical efforts involve the use of capillary zone electrophoresis, two-step laser desorption laser multiphoton ionization mass spectrometry, cavity ring-down spectroscopy, and Hadamard transform time-of-flight mass spectrometry. We believe these methods can revolutionize trace analysis, particularly of biomolecules in cells. -
