    BioDr. Stephen McKenna is a founding member of the Stanford Partnership for Spinal Cord Injury and Repair. He is currently the Chief of the Rehabilitation Trauma Center; as well as, the site director of the Advanced SCI Medicine Fellowship at SCVMC.

    As a Neurocritical Care physician, Dr. McKenna specializes in ventilator-dependent Spinal Cord and Traumatic Brain Injury, as well as neuromuscular diseases. He has led first-in-human clinical trials ranging from vaccines for HIV to stem cell-derived oligodendrocyte progenitor cell-based therapies for SCI. Dr. McKenna is Chairman of the Respiratory Section of the International Standards to Document Autonomic Function after SCI (ISAFSCI) and co-chair of the American Spinal Cord Injury Association (ASIA) Research Education Subcommittee.

    BioSafyer McKenzie-Sampson is an IDEAL Provostial Fellow and instructor within the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University. Dr. McKenzie-Sampson is a social and perinatal epidemiologist, focused on researching the multi-level impacts of exposure to racism across the life course on the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes in Black communities, with the goal of translating findings into interventions to increase birth justice. Her research portfolio uniquely interrogates the rates of adverse perinatal outcomes through the lens of maternal nativity in the United States which allows for focus on the experiences of Black immigrants. She is currently the principal investigator of the AZANIA study, a mixed methods pilot study which collects data on the pregnancy and childbirth experiences of African immigrants in California. Dr. McKenzie-Sampson received her PhD in Epidemiology and Translational Science from the University of California San Francisco, and in addition to her research, she supports families in the Bay Area as a full-spectrum community doula.

Applications of these methods include neuronavigation, neurosurgical planning and the development of improved biomarkers for brain development, degeneration, disease and injury.

    BioDr. M. Windy McNerney is the Director of Biological Sciences for the MIRECC at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto, and a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) at Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. McNerney holds a particular passion for not only understanding the neurophysiology and biochemistry of mental health diseases, but also advocating for these invisible diseases. Her research focuses on neurodegeneration, depression, TBI, PTSD, and addiction. She is collaborating with researchers to integrate brain imaging and biochemical markers in hopes to better understand these diseases. She also is taking a lead role at the VA in investigating the biochemistry of magnetic brain stimulation and is the leader of the NeuroNado Laboratory. At Stanford University, she is the professor of two popular courses examining the biological and societal issues surrounding substance use disorder, with a major focus on opioids such as fentanyl. She has individually mentored over 25 students from underrepresented groups in STEM activities and leads monthly seminars aimed at facilitating career development. In her free time, she is a community advocate for the treatment of mental health and educates groups about the dangers of fentanyl.

    She earned her BS from UC Davis and her PhD from the University of Notre Dame. While at ND, she interned at NASA Ames on Human Factors Engineering. She then went on to a postdoctoral position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (DOE), and then completed a fellowship at the WRIISC program at the VA and Stanford University.

    BioDr. Meador is a Professor of Neurology and Neurosciences at Stanford University, and Clinical Director, Stanford Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. Dr. Meador graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Applied Biology (with high honor) and received his MD from the Medical College of Georgia. After an internship at the University of Virginia and service as an officer in the Public Health Corps, he completed a residency in Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia and a fellowship in Behavioral Neurology at the University of Florida. Dr. Meador joined the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia (1984-2002) where he became the Charbonnier Professor of Neurology. He was the Chair of Neurology at Georgetown University (2002-2004), the Melvin Greer Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at the University of Florida (2004-2008) where he served as Director of Epilepsy Program and Director of the Clinical Alzheimer Research Program, and Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at Emory University (2008-2013) where he served as Director of Epilepsy and of Clinical Neurocience Research. He joined the faculty of Stanford University in 2013. Dr. Meador has authored over 400 peer-reviewed publications. His research interests include: cognitive mechanisms (e.g., memory and attention); cerebral lateralization; pharmacology and physiology of cognition; mechanisms of perception, consciousness and memory; EEG; epilepsy; epilepsy and pregnancy; preoperative evaluation for epilepsy surgery; intracarotid amobarbital procedure (i.e., Wada test); functional imaging; therapeutic drug trials; neurodevelopmental effects of antiepileptic drugs; psychoimmunology; behavioral disorders (e.g., aphasia, neglect, dementia); and neuropsychiatric disorders. Dr. Meador has served as the PI for a long running NIH multicenter study of pregnancy outcomes in women with epilepsy and their children.     Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI have developed a new promising neonatal mortality prediction score at the University of Gondar Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Gondar, Ethiopia. The score predicts approximately 84% of neonatal deaths in the NICU using clinical variables. I have a dataset over 800 NICU admissions in Gondar. I am recruiting scholars who are interested in conducting clinical and epidemiological research to validate, refine, and implement the mortality score to reduce neonatal mortality in Ethiopia.

    BioDr. Meffre obtained his PhD in Immunology from the Université d’Aix-Marseille in France before he moved to the USA as a postdoc fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Michel Nussenzweig at The Rockefeller University in New York City. He became an assistant professor at Cornell University in 2003 before being recruited at Yale University as associate professor in 2009. He was tenured at Yale in 2014 before he joined the Department of Medicine/Division of Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University as a tenured full professor in 2022.

    Dr. Meffre’s work focuses on the etiology of autoimmune syndromes and the roles played by B cells in these diseases. His group characterized the abnormal selection of developing autoreactive B cells in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), type 1 diabetes (T1D), multiple sclerosis (MS) and Sjögren’s syndrome, resulting in large numbers of autoreactive naïve B cells accumulating in the patient’s blood. Hence, these autoreactive B cells may present self-antigens to T cells and initiate autoimmune diseases. These early B cell tolerance defects are likely primary to these autoimmune diseases and may result from genetic factors such as the 1858T PTPN22 allele that segregates with RA, SLE and T1D and correlate with an impaired removal of developing autoreactive B cells.
    His research goals also consist in characterizing the molecules and pathways involved in the establishment of B cell tolerance and the removal of developing autoreactive B cells generated by random V(D)J recombination through the investigation of rare patients with primary immunodeficiency (PID) enrolled through an international network. Alteration of B cell receptor (BCR) or Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling in PID patients results in a defective central B cell tolerance and a failure to counterselect developing autoreactive B cells in the bone marrow. In contrast, functional and suppressive regulatory T cells play a key role in preventing the accumulation of autoreactive clones in the mature naïve B cell compartment. The recent development of humanized mouse models recapitulating early B cell tolerance checkpoints and their defects in autoimmune settings allow further in-depth investigation of tolerance mechanisms and the development of novel approaches to restore defective central and peripheral B cell tolerance checkpoints and thwart autoimmunity.

She is a Cardiologist at Stanford and serves on the Advisory Board for Stanford's Center for Digital Health. She is a Co-Founder of Alphabet's Verily and former Chief Medical Officer of Google Life Sciences. She is on the Board of Directors at Boston Scientific, as well as the Board of Advisors for Research!America and the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy. She is a Senior Advisor at SandboxAQ and the Chair of the Investment Committee of the American Heart Association’s GRFW Venture Fund.

    As a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, a Senior Investigator with the TIMI Study Group, and a Cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Mega led large, international, randomized trials evaluating novel therapies and new medical technologies. She directed the TIMI Study Group’s Genomics Program, demonstrating and testing the role of CYP2C19 genetic variants on antiplatelet medications, a key pharmacogenetic finding. She has published manuscripts in the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and JAMA. She served as an Advisor for the California Governor’s Precision Medicine Initiative and the Board of Directors at Danaher Corporation.

    Dr. Mega is a graduate of Stanford University, Yale University School of Medicine, and Harvard School of Public Health. She completed Internal Medicine Residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Cardiovascular Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. She has won the Laennec Society, Samuel A. Levine, and Douglas P. Zipes Awards, and she is a Fellow of the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Meharwade received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Montreal, after conducting thesis work on signalling and transcriptional mechanisms regulating cell fate heterogeneity and totipotent stem cells.

    BioDr. Mehta is a board-certified, fellowship-trained medical oncologist at the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center. He is also an adjunct clinical assistant professor in the gastrointestinal (GI) oncology group of the Department of Medicine, Division of Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Mehta specializes in gastrointestinal cancer, with a particular focus on pancreatic and gastric cancers. He also treats colorectal cancers. His treatment specialties include immunotherapy — helping a patient’s immune system fight cancer — and targeted therapies, which send cancer-fighting drugs to specific cancer cell molecules.

    His research interests include understanding why GI cancers resist treatments and identifying new ways to treat these tumors. In particular, he is interested in GI tumor immunology, which focuses on directing a person’s immune system to help destroy cancer cells. He also has a special interest in tumor plasticity, which represents the ability of a tumor cell to evolve and develop resistance to therapies.

    Dr. Mehta has earned research awards and grants from organizations including the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Society of Hematology (ASH), and the National Institutes of Health.

    Dr. Mehta has published in many peer-reviewed journals, including Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Immunology, Nature Medicine, Nature Cancer, Cancer Discovery and Immunity. He has written book chapters on subjects including esophageal and gastric cancer. He has also presented his research on topics including tumor immunology and pancreatic cancer at dozens of symposia and meetings around the country.

    BioKara D. Meister, MD, FAAP, FACS is a pediatric otolaryngologist and head & neck surgeon. She received her medical degree from Medical University of South Carolina and completed her otolaryngology residency at University of Pittsburgh. She completed a NIH-funded fellowship in head and neck research at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Meister then went on to complete a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.

    She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department Otolaryngology, Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology, at Stanford University. Dr. Meister’s research interests include thyroid cancer, head & neck masses, Graves' disease. She has a special interest in the influence of the environment and pollutants (such as microplastics) on health. She currently serves as the Co-Clinical Chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology. Dr. Meister completed additional training in innovation through the Stanford Biodesign Faculty Fellowship.

    Her clinical interests include the treatment of patients with head and neck masses including thyroid nodules and cancer. She is Co-Director, Surgical, of the Children's Thyroid Center at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and is a participating surgeon in the Aerodigestive and Airway Reconstruction Center at Stanford Children’s Health. She is co-editor of the textbook "Pediatric Bronchoscopy for Clinicians" and enjoys advocacy work with the American Academy of Pediatrics Button Battery Taskforce.

    Dr. Meister is a member of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) where she serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee and is a member of the ATA Guidelines Writing Group for Thyroid Disease & Pregnancy. She is a member of the pediatric committee of the American Head and Neck Society. She is an author and speaker on masses and tumors of the head and neck, thyroid disease, and thyroid cancer in children and adolescents.     BioDr. Mekonnen is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the Department of Ophthalmology.

    Dr. Mekonnen diagnoses and treats a wide range of eye conditions, including cataracts, corneal and external eye diseases. She creates an individual, comprehensive care plan for each of her patients.

    Dr. Mekonnen’s clinical research interests include exploring the most effective medical and surgical therapies for patients with corneal and external eye diseases. She has researched and published on outcomes of macular edema, described a novel surgical technique for severe ocular surface disease and described a possible new ophthalmic manifestation of a rare congenital disorder called Cobb syndrome.

    Dr. Mekonnen has published work in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Cornea: The Journal of Cornea and External Disease, and the Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection. She has presented to her peers at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) Summer Symposium, and the Annual GlaxoSmithKline Women in Science Conference.

    BioMads Melbye, MD, DMSc, is visiting Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is also Director of the Danish Cancer Institute (DCI), Research Director at the Danish Cancer Society in Denmark, and Professor in Medical Epidemiology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. From 2016-2020 he was President and CEO at Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark. Previous positions at e.g. the National Cancer Institute, NIH, USA, before he became State Epidemiologist in Denmark, and later Head of Department of Epidemiology Research, and Division Director of Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance, Statens Serum Institut. Previous academic positions as Danish Research Council Professor, NORFA professor, and Foreign Adjunct Professor at Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He has written more than 700 publications (H-index: 115/141 (Web of Science/Google scholar) and is the Dane with most papers in high impact journals in general medicine (NEJM, Lancet, JAMA). He is among the worlds top 2% of scientists as listed in the AD Scientific Index 2023. He is knighted by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and has received e.g. the Novo Nordisk Prize, the large Erhoff Prize, and the Anders Jahre Prize (young researchers). He is e.g. chairman of the scientific committee at the Danish Health Insurance Fund, member of the scientific advisory board for Oslo University Hospital, member of the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation (medicine), and board member of the Norwegian Cancer Registry.     BioEsmeralda Melgoza, PhD, MPH, CHES is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University's School of Medicine. Her research examines health inequities in the U.S. healthcare system, with a focus on emergency medical services provided in the prehospital setting and the emergency department. She centers her research on the experiences of underserved populations, including Latine/Hispanics, older adults, and people with limited English proficiency. She is trained in both quantitative and qualitative methods. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including Medical Care, the Journal of the American Heart Association, Health Affairs Scholar, Prehospital Emergency Care, and SSM-Qualitative Research in Health, among others. She is a current recipient of a grant from the CARESTAR Foundation.

    Dr. Melgoza received her PhD in Community Health Sciences from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and a minor in Gerontology from the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. Her dissertation research was funded by an R36 grant from the National Institute on Aging. Dr. Melgoza is a former Senior Research Analyst at the UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute and an alumna of the Yale Ciencia Academy at Yale University. She is bilingual in English and Spanish. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, mentoring, and hiking.

    BioMichelle Mello is Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and Professor of Health Policy in the Department of Health Policy at Stanford University School of Medicine. She conducts empirical research into issues at the intersection of law, ethics, and health policy. She is the author of more than 250 articles on medical liability, public health law, the public health response to COVID-19, pharmaceuticals and vaccines, biomedical research ethics and governance, artificial intelligence, health information privacy, and other topics.

    The recipient of a number of awards for her research, Dr. Mello was elected to the National Academy of Medicine at the age of 40. From 2000 to 2014, she was a professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, where she directed the School’s Program in Law and Public Health.

    Dr. Mello teaches courses in torts and public health law. She holds a J.D. from the Yale Law School, a Ph.D. in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.Phil. from Oxford University, where she was a Marshall Scholar, and a B.A. from Stanford University.

    BioThe Melosh group explores how to apply new methods from the semiconductor and self-assembly fields to important problems in biology, materials, and energy. We think about how to rationally design engineered interfaces to enhance communication with biological cells and tissues, or to improve energy conversion and materials synthesis. In particular, we are interested in seamlessly integrating inorganic structures together with biology for improved cell transfection and therapies, and designing new materials, often using diamondoid molecules as building blocks.
    My group is very interested in how to design new inorganic structures that will seamless integrate with biological systems to address problems that are not feasible by other means. This involves both fundamental work such as to deeply understand how lipid membranes interact with inorganic surfaces, electrokinetic phenomena in biologically relevant solutions, and applying this knowledge into new device designs. Examples of this include “nanostraw” drug delivery platforms for direct delivery or extraction of material through the cell wall using a biomimetic gap-junction made using nanoscale semiconductor processing techniques. We also engineer materials and structures for neural interfaces and electronics pertinent to highly parallel data acquisition and recording. For instance, we have created inorganic electrodes that mimic the hydrophobic banding of natural transmembrane proteins, allowing them to ‘fuse’ into the cell wall, providing a tight electrical junction for solid-state patch clamping. In addition to significant efforts at engineering surfaces at the molecular level, we also work on ‘bridge’ projects that span between engineering and biological/clinical needs. My long history with nano- and microfabrication techniques and their interactions with biological constructs provide the skills necessary to fabricate and analyze new bio-electronic systems.

    BioDr. Hector Rodrigo Mendez is a Medical Geneticist from Argentina. Rodrigo completed a residency program in Medical Genetics at Centro Nacional de Genetica Medica – ANLIS (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and a Master’s program in Medical Molecular Biology at Buenos Aires University.

    Rodrigo continued his scientific career at a German Genomic Start-up, working as a human geneticist and providing his experience in rare disorders, genomic data (WGS/WES/gene panels) analysis, variant interpretation, and its integration with a deep focus on genotype-phenotype correlation.

    Rodrigo’s areas of expertise are rare disorders, NGS technology, Whole Genome Sequencing analysis, and ACMG interpretation guidelines, and his research aims are:

    - Collection and analysis of clinical data through deep-learning phenotyping approaches.
    - Multi-omic data integration to elucidate complex and rare genetic disorders.
    - Drive progress in curing rare genetic diseases, particularly among critically sick infants.

    At Stanford University, under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Wheeler, he is conducting his postdoctoral research studies to achieve his scientific goals.

    BioDr. Joshua Menke completed his hematopathology fellowship at Stanford and a cytopathology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). His clinical and research interests lie at the intersection of hematopathology, cytopathology, and advanced single-cell and cell-free diagnostic techniques. As the Associate Section Director of Clinical Flow Cytometry at Stanford, Dr. Menke is developing and validating new minimal residual disease assays for detecting low levels of myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms in the post-treatment setting, as well as multiple other 12-color flow assays with the latest markers for routine phenotyping.

    Dr. Menke is the recipient of the Paul E. Strandjord Young Investigator Award from the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Scientists and the Laurence J. Marton Award for Excellence in Research from UCSF for his translational work on CALR mutations at the UCSF Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. Dr. Menke is a founding member of the Cytology-Hematopathology Interinstitutional Collaboration (CHIC), which aims to study the performance of cytology samples in diagnosing lymphoma across large datasets from five academic institutions. He currently chairs this group, leading large clinical research studies.

    BioAntonio Meola M.D. Ph.D graduated Summa cum Laude and Research Honors at the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2008, and completed his residency training in Neurosurgery at the same Institution in July 2015. Dr Meola attended a Ph.D. program at the University of Florence, Italy, where he discussed a doctoral thesis entitled "A New Head-Mounted Display-based Augmented Reality System in Neurosurgical Oncology: a study on phantom".
    Since 2/2014 to 1/2015 Dr Meola completed a Research Fellowship in Neurosurgical anatomy at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), under the Direction of Dr. Juan C. Fernandez-Miranda. The main focus of his research was the surgical neuroanatomy of the white matter tracts of the human brain.
    Since 7/2015 to 6/2016 Dr Meola served as Clinical Fellow in Image-Guided Neurosurgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, MA (Director: Dr. Alexandra J. Golby M.D.). During the fellowship, he focused on the clinical application and integration of advanced imaging techniques, including intraoperative-MRI, intraoperative US, functional MRI, tractography.
    Since 7/2016 to 6/2017 Dr Meola completed a Neurosurgical Oncology Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH, devoting his efforts to minimally-invasive neurosurgical techniques, such as Laser interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (Gamma Knife), as well as to awake neurosurgery.
    Starting 7/2017, Dr Meola joined the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford. Dr. Meola mainly focuses on conventional and innovative treatments for brain and skull base tumors, including both surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery (CyberKnife).

    BioDr. Mercola is Professor of Medicine and Professor in the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. He completed postdoctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, was on the faculty in the Department of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School for 12 years, and later at the Sanford-Burnham-Prebys Institute and Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego before relocating to Stanford in 2015.

    Prof. Mercola is known for identifying many of the factors that are responsible for inducing and forming the heart, including the discovery that Wnt inhibition is a critical step in cardiogenesis that provided the conceptual basis and reagents for the large-scale production of cardiovascular tissues from pluripotent stem cells. He has collaborated with medicinal chemists, optical engineers and software developers to pioneer the use of patient iPSC-cardiomyocytes for disease modeling, safety pharmacology and drug development. His academic research is focused on developing and using quantitative high throughput assays of patient-specific cardiomyocyte function to discover druggable targets for preserving contractile function in heart failure and promoting regeneration following ischemic injury. He co-established drug screening and assay development at the Conrad Prebys Drug Discovery Center (San Diego), which operated as one of 4 large screening centers of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) Molecular Libraries screening initiative and continues as one of the largest academic drug screening centers.

    Prof. Mercola received an NIH MERIT award for his work on heart formation. He holds numerous patents, including describing the invention of the first engineered dominant negative protein and small molecules for stem cell and cancer applications. He serves on multiple editorial and advisory boards, including Vala Sciences, Regencor, The Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research and the Human Biomolecular Research Institute. His laboratory is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Phospholamban Foundation and Fondation Leducq.
