Fateme (Fatima) Nateghi
Postdoctoral Scholar, Biomedical Informatics
BioAs a postdoc researcher at the Division of Computational Medicine, I find myself at the exciting intersection of machine learning and healthcare. My journey began with a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from KU Leuven in Belgium, where I explored the complexities of machine learning algorithms and their transformative potential in clinical settings. My research focused on adapting these algorithms for time-to-event data, a method used to predict when specific events may occur in a patient’s future.
At Stanford, my work centers on building trustworthy AI systems to enhance healthcare delivery. I develop and evaluate machine learning models that integrate structured electronic health records (EHRs) and unstructured clinical notes to support real-world clinical decision-making. My recent projects include predicting treatment retention in opioid use disorder, improving antibiotic stewardship for urinary tract infections, and enabling digital consultations through large language models (LLMs). I'm particularly interested in embedding-based retrieval and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) methods that help bridge cutting-edge AI research with clinical practice.
My role involves not just advancing the integration of machine learning in healthcare but also collaborating with a diverse team of clinicians, data scientists, and engineers. Together, we're striving to unravel complex healthcare challenges and ultimately improve patient outcomes. -

Vaidehi Natu
Physical Sci Res Scientist, Psychology
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Vaidehi Natu is a developmental neuroscientist. Her research program aims to study how the human brain matures from infancy to adulthood, as it acquires new life skills and behaviors: What are the origins of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain development during infancy? How does the trajectory of neural mechanisms unfold during development, as school-aged children acquire complex skills such as reading or face recognition? What are some of the parallels in brain development across primate species? What changes occur in the brain in developmental disorders such as autism, multiple sclerosis, and dyslexia?
She uses a multi-modal approach by combining various neuroimaging techniques including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), quantitative MRI (qMRI), and diffusion MRI (dMRI) as well as behavioral observations, histology, comparative methods across humans and macaques, and intracranial electroencephalography. Combining complementary techniques provides a unified understanding of how the brain’s anatomy, function, and behavior co-develop to achieve complex human skills. -

Margaret Jane Neff
Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated), Medicine - Med/Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine
Medical Director--Vapahcs Medical Surgical Icu, Medicine - Med/Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care MedicineBioMy training is in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, and I've been blessed to be part of the care of many patients and their families. My clinical research interests have been in the field of critical care medicine and ARDS, a type of acute respiratory failure seen commonly in patients with severe injuries or illnesses. I also have a particular interest in evaluating and improving processes for care. Issues like standardizing processes to improve reliability, improving safety of handoffs, and exploring ways to teach "roundsmanship" (the process of discussing patients' care with a group of providers) are current interests of mine.
The future of medical care depends on training the next generation of providers, and I'm thankful to be part of training this next generation. Teaching at the bedside or in formal classroom settings gives me great joy and satisfaction. I'm delighted to work with a great, multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists. I add to that team our patients and families, for it truly takes a team to provide care that is both excellent and compassionate. -

Pooja U. Neiman, MD, MPA
Assistant Professor of Surgery (General Surgery)
BioPooja Neiman is a Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Stanford School of Medicine. She completed her Acute Care and Surgical Critical Care fellowships at UCSF in San Francisco, CA in 2026 and her General Surgery residency at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA in 2024. She was a National Clinician Scholars Program (NCSP) Fellow at the University of Michigan from 2020-2022, where her work focused on the clinical and financial outcomes for surgical patients after health policy changes. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she also volunteered with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Testing Team to bring K-12 students in the state safely back to school.
Prior to surgical residency, she completed her medical education at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and received her Master's in Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. While in college, Pooja launched a non-profit called Mobilizing Health, an organization that partnered with physicians and community leaders to deliver medical advice via text message to more than 5,000 patients in rural India. After running Mobilizing Health full-time and overseeing its transition to UNICEF, she focused on issues related to access to health care domestically.
Having grown up in a family that incurred medical debt while uninsured and later gained coverage through the Affordable Care Act, she knows firsthand how much consistent access to care can change a family's life. Pooja believes that access to high-value, affordable health care is a basic need, and that trauma systems, which care for every injured patient regardless of insurance or ability to pay, are a cornerstone of that access. Her research examines how insurance, financial hardship, and the social conditions of patients' lives shape their recovery after injury and emergency surgery, with the goal of informing policies that help patients not only survive but fully recover. -
