MSTP StudentBioGita Abhiraman is an MD/PhD Candidate at Stanford. She completed her PhD research in Immunology advised by Dr. Christopher Garcia, where she studied cytokine signaling, immune receptor structure, and protein engineering. Gita completed her bachelor's degree in Physics, with a focus in Biophysics, at Harvard University. She previously studied tumor-immune dynamics and helped to engineer the bacterial enzyme sortase for live cell-tracking applications, under the mentorship of Dr. Stephanie Dougan at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Matthew Alexander Abikenari
MD Student, expected graduation Spring 2028
BioMatthew received his undergraduate degree Summa Cum Laude from UCLA in march 2020. After receiving the highest departmental honor, he remained at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and conducted full-time clinical and basic sciences research into the molecular foundations of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions. Matthew went onto pursue a graduate degree in Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Oxford as The Queen's College Herbruck Scholar, awarded to only one American student per year. His graduate thesis focused on the paraneoplastic autoimmune manifestations across neurodegenerative diseases as well as genotypic and phenotypic features of Meningiomas. Matthew is currently pursuing clinical and basic science research opportunities in Neurosurgical oncology domain as a current medical student at Stanford University.

Melanie Ambler
MD Student with Scholarly Concentration in Biomedical Ethics & Medical Humanities, expected graduation Spring 2026
BioMelanie Ambler is an aspiring physician-artist-scientist, interested in the integration of the arts into the medical field. She is a classically-trained cellist and founded two live virtual concert series for patients and care providers in both the United States and France. In 2019, she received a Fulbright Fellowship for study and research in the city of Caen, France. She pursued a master's in Neuroscience at the Université de Caen-Normandie, and performed a research study with the Neuroimaging Lab of Human Memory regarding the ability of patients with clinical amnesia to recognize new melodies or paintings. She is currently a musician on call for the nonprofit Project: Music Heals Us and plays weekly one-on-one virtual concerts for critically ill patients.
Melanie hopes to continuing bridging the arts and medicine during her time at Stanford Medicine by researching promising interventions and then putting them into practice as a care provider. -

Shalmali Bane
Ph.D. Student in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, admitted Spring 2021
BioShalmali Bane is doctoral student in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. She is a trainee with the Center for Population Health Sciences, in the Stanford School of Medicine. She works with Dr. Suzan Carmichael on examining social determinants of reproductive health and perinatal outcomes. Shalmali grew up in India and received a biology degree from Stanford, with a focus in Neurobiology. Prior to graduate school, she was a healthcare consultant with the Analysis Group, where she focused on survey research, literature reviews, and budget impact modelling. She is passionate about equity and inclusion initiatives and serves on her departmental JEDI committee. She hopes to meld all of these experiences together in her current work: applying rigorous epidemiological methods to study how factors like socially determined race/ethnicity and socio-economic position impact the experiences of birthing persons.

Brandon Bergsneider

BioBrandon Hwa-Lin Bergsneider, from Los Angeles, CA, is pursuing an MD at Stanford School of Medicine. Brandon earned a bachelor of science in human biology from Stanford, and a MSc in bioinformatics and theoretical systems biology from Imperial College London. Brandon aspires to use data science-based technologies to advance health equity through early diagnosis, democratizing health information, and improving treatment efficacy. At Stanford and Imperial, he researched the molecular bases of neurodegeneration, the genetic susceptibility of neuroblastoma patients to SARS-CoV-2, computational protein structure prediction, and using machine learning to identify chemotherapy-resistant cancer cells. Brandon has also worked at the National Institutes of Health, where he used computational network analysis to identify clinical and demographic determinants of brain tumor patient symptom burden. Brandon has multiple first-author publications and, outside of academics, enjoys volunteering as a surf-therapy instructor for military veterans. He is a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, a Fulbright Scholar, and an NIH Cancer Research Training Award Fellow.

BioI am currently a PhD student in Biomedical Physics within the Department of Radiology at the School of Medicine. In the two years prior to Stanford, I was at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where I worked on airborne laser radar systems and was on the core team developing a laser-ultrasound system for medical imaging.
My interests are at the intersection between medical technology innovation, clinical translation, and business. -

He subsequently spent three years working at the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research for Dr. Ellen Heber-Katz. Sam hopes to expand the paradigm of cancer research and help to develop novel therapies for cancer and other ailments. He is also interested in optimization of physical and mental performance.

Masters Student in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, admitted Autumn 2022Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy overall research goal is to advance clinical practice by providing anesthesiologists with data to most effectively maintain cerebral blood flow in the perioperative period.
I am interested in the effect of the autonomic nervous system on cerebral blood flow regulation.
I intend to combine regional anesthetic techniques and noninvasive bedside cerebral blood flow monitoring to understand the effect of the sympathetic system on cerebral blood flow.
A secondary goal is to apply this new knowledge to investigate whether cervical sympathetic blocks improve long term neurological outcomes. -
Cort Breuer

BioCort Breuer is currently an Immunology PhD student in the lab of Nathan Reticker-Flynn. Cort received his BS in Biological Engineering from Cornell University in 2022, where he studied lymphatic-cancer interactions and T cell mechanosensing in the lab of Esak Lee. Previously, he worked with James Moon at Massachusetts General Hospital to develop in vivo gene therapies for the immune system and with Michelle Krogsgaard at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center to investigate structural biology of TCR signaling. Cort’s current work focuses on mechanisms of tumor-immune tolerance and decoding the antigen specificity of T cell receptors. Drawing on his engineering background, he designs new molecular tools to record how immune cells communicate and constructs therapeutics to target impaired immune responses.
