    BioDr. Rachel Sussman grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania and Chicago, and completed college at Yale, a master's degree in psychology at Harvard, and her medical degree at Stanford. She worked and studied for several years in Belgium and China. As a former middle and high school science teacher, she has a strong interest in education and the importance of good communication with patients. She has particular interests in women's health, pediatrics, lactation, and nutrition for the whole family. Her interest in psychology also guided her towards a fellowship at Stanford and expertise in addiction and chemical dependency. Dr. Sussman enjoys biking everywhere she can with her three kids, going to the farmer's market on the weekends, reading, and yoga.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsProgram Overview

    The world we enjoy, including the oxygen we breathe, has been beneficially created by biological systems. Consequently, we believe that innovative biotechnologies can also serve to help correct a natural world that non-natural technologies have pushed out of balance. We must work together to provide a sustainable world system capable of equitably improving the lives of over 10 billion people.
    Toward that objective, our program focuses on human health as well as planet health. To address particularly difficult challenges, we seek to synergistically combine: 1) the design and evolution of complex protein-based nanoparticles and enzymatic systems with 2) innovative, uniquely capable cell-free production technologies.
    To advance human health we focus on: a) achieving the 120 year-old dream of producing “magic bullets”; smart nanoparticles that deliver therapeutics or genetic therapies only to specific cells in our bodies; b) precisely designing and efficiently producing vaccines that mimic viruses to stimulate safe and protective immune responses; and c) providing a rapid point-of-care liquid biopsy that will count and harvest circulating tumor cells.
    To address planet health we are pursuing biotechnologies to: a) inexpensively use atmospheric CO2 to produce commodity biochemicals as the basis for a new carbon negative chemical industry, and b) mitigate the intermittency challenges of photovoltaic and wind produced electricity by producing hydrogen either from biomass sugars or directly from sunlight.
    More than 25 years ago, Professor Swartz began his pioneering work to develop cell-free biotechnologies. The new ability to precisely focus biological systems toward efficiently addressing new, “non-natural” objectives has proven tremendously useful as we seek to address the crucial and very difficult challenges listed above. Another critical feature of the program is the courage (or naivete) to approach important objectives that require the development and integration of several necessary-but- not-sufficient technology advances.

    BioDr. Syed is a member of the divisions of Pediatric Radiology and Body MRI and serves as the Director of MRI for Stanford Medicine Children's Health. His clinical interests include MR imaging of pediatric and adult hepatobiliary disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, gynecologic pathology, and congenital heart disease. He is also an active researcher, collaborating with fellow engineers and scientists at Stanford to translate technical innovations in MRI into improved patient care. His recent work focuses on translation of machine learning techniques for rapid, robust MRI in children and adults.

In this role, she splits her time between the Stanford Los Altos LGBTQ+ Primary Care Clinic and the MayView Community Clinic, a Federally Qualified Health Center in Mountain View, CA.

    Dr. Tabaka provides expert, compassionate care personalized to each patient she serves. She is dedicated to meeting the health care needs of all of her patients including all members of the LGBTQ+ community and she welcomes patients of all ages and backgrounds to her practice.

    Prior to her medical training, Dr. Tabaka completed her Masters in Public Health at the University of Minnesota. She went to complete medical school at Stanford University and completed residency at the Stanford O’Connor Family Medicine Residency Program in San Jose, CA.

    BioDr. Geoff Tabin is Co-Founder and Chairman of the Himalayan Cataract Project and a Professor of Ophthalmology and Global Medicine at Stanford University. He has published more than 45 peer-reviewed articles, two books and a dozen book chapters related to his work in ophthalmology and the developing world.

    Dr. Tabin is the fourth person in the world to reach the tallest peak on each of the seven continents. His passion for mountain climbing directed him to his professional career in eye care. After summiting Mt. Everest, on one of his expeditions, he came across a Dutch team performing cataract surgery on a woman who had been needlessly blind for three years. It was then he understood his life calling.

    Tabin graduated from Yale University and then earned an MA in Philosophy at Oxford University on a Marshall Scholarship. From there, he took his interest in moral philosophy and health care delivery to Harvard Medical School where he earned his MD in 1985. After completing an ophthalmology residency at Brown University and a fellowship in corneal surgery in Melbourne, Australia, Dr. Tabin returned to Nepal to work with Dr. Sanduk Ruit.

    Tabin and Nepalese eye surgeon Dr. Sanduk Ruit established the Himalayan Cataract Project in 1995 – with a vow to work to eliminate all preventable and treatable blindness from the Himalayan region in their lifetime, a goal, in Tabin’s words, “more audacious than setting out to make the first assent of the East Face of Mount Everest.” Dr. Ruit, whom the Associated Press heralded as the “god of sight” to the world’s poor, and Tabin have proven that hospital quality standards can be applied in impoverished areas devoid of electricity and clean water. Their successful approach to restoring sight and dogged perseverance has made possible what 20 years ago seemed impossible.

    The Himalayan Cataract Project has since expanded beyond the Himalayas to encompass Sub-Saharan Africa as well. Dr.Tabin spends a considerable part of the year working abroad throughout the Himalayas and Sub-Saharan Africa. At Stanford his practice focus encompasses surgery and treatment of diseases of the anterior and external eye including cataract and corneal surgery.

    BioDr. Nounou Taleghani completed her undergraduate education at UCLA, graduating in 1986, and subsequently earned both her M.D. and Ph.D. (Neuroscience) degrees at the Chicago Medical School.
    She completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine in 1999 and joined the faculty of the Department of Surgery at Stanford as a Board Certified Emergency Medicine specialist in the same year.
    She briefly left Stanford in August 2005 and joined the faculty at Weill Cornell Medical College, where she served as the Associate Dean for Clinical Curriculum for the Qatar campus and was responsible for the implementation, management and coordination of the WCMC-Q undergraduate clinical curriculum, including the third year clerkships and the fourth year electives. Under her leadership, WCMC-Q developed a pioneering, multilingual program in medical interpreting designed to assist medical students as they interacted with patients in their clinical courses at the local teaching hospital. Dr. Taleghani has received many awards for teaching, including several Excellence in Teaching awards, both at Stanford and at Cornell.

    She re-joined the faculty of the Stanford School of Medicine in Fall 2009 as Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery and as an Attending Physician in the Division of Emergency Medicine at Stanford Hospital. She holds an appointment in the medical school and taught in the clinical curriculum as part of the Educator for CARE faculty for 10 Years and as Assistant Dean for Academic Advising. She now serves as Associate Dean for Academic Advising in the School of Medicine and is the founder and director of the Center for Specialty Career Advising.

    Dr. Taleghani was also the Director for Medical Student Education for the Department of Emergency Medicine and oversaw all the courses her department teaches in the Medical School, including being the inaugural required Clerkship Director for the EMED Clerkship. She also served as the founding Director for the Rapid Assessment Program , MD in triage for the Emergency Department.

    BioDr. Suzanne Tamang an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Immunology and Rheumatology and a Faculty Fellow at the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences. She is also the Computation Systems Evaluation Lead at the VA Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention's Program Evaluation Resource Center. Dr. Tamang uses her training in biology, computer science, health services research and biomedical informatics to work with interdisciplinary teams of experts on population health problems of public interest. Integral to her research, is the analysis of large and complex population-based datasets, using techniques from natural language processing, machine learning and deep learning. Her expertise spans US and Danish population-based registries, Electronic Medical Records from various vendors, administrative healthcare claims and other types of observational health and demographic data sources in the US and internationally; also, constructing, populating and applying knowledge-bases for automated reasoning. Dr. Tamang has developed open-source tools for the extraction of health information from unstructured free-text clinical progress notes and licensed machine learning prediction models to Silicon Valley health analytics startups. She is the faculty mentor for the Stanford community working group Stats for Social Good.

    BioDr. Tan is a board-certified sleep medicine physician with the Sleep Medicine Center at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Tan specializes in diagnosing and treating common and rare sleep disorders. Her multidisciplinary approach to care is focused on improving patients’ quality of life and long-term health. Dr. Tan is fellowship-trained and board-certified in sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care medicine.

    Some of Dr. Tan’s research has focused on improving the understanding of fatigue and sleep disorders in cancer patients and survivors. Her work has also highlighted the positive potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance diagnostic methods for sleep disorders.

    Dr. Tan has published her work in numerous prestigious peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Chest, and the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. She has also been an invited guest speaker and moderator at national meetings, including those for the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

    Dr. Tan is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Thoracic Society.

    BioI am a Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesia, at Stanford University Medical School. I am Brazilian and completed medical school, anesthesia training, and my PhD in Brazil. I came to Stanford University for a sabbatical year in 2007. It was a great fit on both sides, and I decided on a long-term career at Stanford. I graduated from “The Master of Academic Medicine program” at the University of Southern California in 2014 and completed a doctoral program in education at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2021. At Stanford, I have been involved with resident education not only through direct supervision, but also by initiating and working on several educational projects (Development and implementation of OSCEs, new lecture format “ libero” " assessing the Workplace Culture and Learning Climate, and use of Entrustable Professional Activities as a framework for assessment for learning). I currently serve as an Associate Designated Institutional Official for GME, Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Associate Residency Program Director. My clinical activity has focused on anesthesia for orthopedic surgery, particularly orthopedic total joint replacements. My areas of interest are: Developing, leading, and evaluating programs; Designing curricula and assessing learners and Designing, implementing, and studying innovations.

    Current research areas include: (I) Physics of droplets in microfluidic systems, (II) Interfacial mass transport and self-assembly, and (III) Applications in food allergy, single-cell wound repair, and the bottom-up construction of synthetic cell and tissues in close collaboration with clinicians and biochemists at the Stanford School of Medicine, UCSF, and University of Michigan.

    BioFor over a decade I have advocated for dedicated research efforts on the basic physics of room temperature high gradient structures and new initiatives for the associated RF systems. This required demanding multidisciplinary collaboration to harness limited resources. The basic elements of the research needed to be inclusive to address not only the fundamentals of accelerator structures but also the fundamentals of associated technologies such as RF manipulation and novel microwave power sources. These basic research efforts were not bundled with specific developments for an application or a general program. The emerging technologies promise a broad, transformational impact.

    With this underlying philosophy in mind, in 2006 the US High Gradient Research Collaboration for which I am the spokesman was formed. SLAC is the host of this collaboration, which comprises MIT, ANL, University of Maryland and University of Colorado, NRL and a host of SBIR companies. This led to the revitalization of this research area worldwide. The international collaborative effort grew to include KEK in Japan, INFN, Frascati in Italy, the Cockcroft Institute in the UK, and the CLIC team at CERN.

    This effort led to a new understanding of the geometrical effects affecting high gradient operations. The collaborative work led to new advances in understanding the gradient limits of photonic band gap structures. Now we have a new optimization methodology for accelerator structure geometries and ongoing research on alternate and novel materials. These efforts doubled the usable gradient in normal conducting high gradient linacs to more than 100 MV/m, thus revitalizing the spread of the technology to other applications including compact Inverse Compton Scattering gamma-ray sources for national security applications, and compact proton linacs for cancer therapy.

    BioDr. Peter Tass investigates and develops neuromodulation techniques for understanding and treating neurologic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, dysfunction following stroke and tinnitus. He creates invasive and non-invasive therapeutic procedures by means of comprehensive computational neuroscience studies and advanced data analysis techniques. The computational neuroscience studies guide experiments that use clinical electrophysiology measures, such as high density EEG recordings and MRI imaging, and various outcome measures. He has pioneered a neuromodulation approach based on thorough computational modelling that employs dynamic self-organization, plasticity and other neuromodulation principles to produce sustained effects after stimulation. To investigate stimulation effects and disease-related brain activity, he focuses on the development of stimulation methods that cause a sustained neural desynchronization by an unlearning of abnormal synaptic interactions. He also performs and contributes to pre-clinical and clinical research in related areas.

    BioDr. Steven Tate serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor specializing in addiction medicine within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He then successfully completed a fellowship in addiction medicine at Stanford. With a Master's in medical statistics from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Dr. Tate brings a rigorous and evidence-based approach to his work.

    Dr. Tate sees patients in the Stanford Dual Diagnosis Clinic, providing comprehensive care for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. He also attends on the inpatient addiction medicine consult service, where he offers guidance to healthcare professionals on complex addiction-related cases. Driven by his dedication to improving care for patients with substance use disorders, he focuses his work on educating future addiction professionals and translating evidence into practice.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy overall research interest is to understand how the immune system interacts with the nervous system after injury to promote the transition from acute to chronic pain. In my clinical practice I care for patients with persistent pain that often occurs after minor trauma such as fracture or surgery. Using basic science approaches including whole system immune phenotyping with mass cytometry and genetic manipulation of peripheral and central immune cells, we seek to dissect the temporal and tissue-specific contribution of these cells to either promotion or inhibition of healing.

    BioDr. Taylor is a fellowship-trained neurologist and assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences, Memory Disorders Division. He provides patient care at the Stanford Center for Memory Disorders.

    His areas of expertise include diagnosing and treating illnesses that impair thinking, memory, behavior, and speech. Dr. Taylor’s clinical focus includes Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body disease, frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia, posterior cortical atrophy, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, autoimmune encephalitis and other rapidly progressive dementias. He works with patients and families to provide diagnostic clarity and individualized treatment plans.

    Dr. Taylor’s academic and research interests combine clinical and scientific understandings of dementia with a philosophical inquiry into the structure of conscious experience. His original clinical research includes diverse topics, such as advances in diagnosing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and the clinical characterization of adult-onset hereditary dementias. Dr. Taylor has published work instrumental in identifying the potential role of fentanyl in a syndrome of sudden onset amnesia that emerged during the opioid crisis.

    He has presented research at the American Academy of Neurology and published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences and Methods in Molecular Biology. He has also published a chapter on the diagnosis and treatment of frontotemporal dementia and was a reviewer for Neurocase.

    Dr. Taylor is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. He has taught residents and medical students clinical skills, neuroanatomy, neuro-imaging, and other subjects. He also has delivered Grand Rounds presentations on dementia, epilepsy, and pediatric neurology.

    BioDr. Nick Telischak is a neurointerventional surgeon (neurointerventional radiologist) who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke, brain aneurysms, brain arteriovenous malformations, brain and spinal dural arteriovenous fistulae, carotid artery stenosis, vertebral body compression fractures, spinal metastases, axial back pain, and congenital vascular malformations. Dr. Telischak treats all of these conditions using minimally-invasive, image-guided procedures and state-of-the-art technology.

    BioJoyce Teng, MD, PhD is a professor in dermatology at Stanford University. She is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital (LPCH) at Stanford and Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC). She received her medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 12 years. She is one of the 6 pediatric dermatologists practicing at LPCH and one of 72 at SHC who specialize in Dermatology. She sees patients with rare genetic disorders, birthmarks, vascular anomalies and a variety of inflammatory skin diseases. She is also an experienced pediatric dermatological surgeon. Her research interests are drug discovery and novel therapy for skin disorders.

    BioDr. Valerie Teng is a board certified family physician with special interests in preventative medicine and women's health. Her experiences in caring for patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension, have fueled her desire to partner with patients to enter healthier lifestyles. She is also passionate about providing comprehensive care to patients of all ages, including newborns and teens.

    During her residency training, Dr. Teng explored many opportunities in medical education through the O’Connor-Stanford Leaders in Education Residency (OSLER) program. She is delighted to continue in medical education as a part of the faculty at Stanford Family Medicine.

    BioHe is currently a Professor of Medicine at Stanford where he serves as the Section Chief of Heart Failure, Cardiac Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support. He sees patients both in the clinic and in the hospital who have advanced heart failure or who have received cardiac transplantation or mechanical circulatory support.

    His research interests are in clinical outcomes in patients after transplant and mechanical support as well as novel approaches to immunosuppression. He has participated in many single-center and multi-institutional research studies and has published widely in the fields of transplant and mechanical support. He served as President of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation in 2018.

    BioDr. Teuteberg completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago and a Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. She joined the faculty at Stanford in 2017 and currently sees patients as a part of the inpatient palliative care consult team at Stanford Healthcare.

    She has been the clinical director or Stanford Medicine's implementation of the Ariadne Labs' Serious Illness Care Program since its inception in 2018. Her interests include communication skills training, leveraging predictive algorithms to identify patients who would most benefit from serious illness conversations, how to empower non-physician clinical team members to participate in this work, and best practice for EHR builds related to advance care planning.

    Dr. Tezcan is a medical oncologist and hematologist with over three decades of diverse experience in cancer management and research.

    He is leading the development of Lexent Bio's liquid biopsy technology, first in response monitoring, overseeing scientific and clinical development of the technology. With over three decades of direct patient care and clinical trial experience as a principal investigator and director both in academia and private practice, he has firsthand understanding of unmet clinical needs of physicians and patients, and broad experience in clinical trial design and implementation.
    He established the CA.RE.foundation, a cancer research foundation dedicated to enabling clinical trial execution across community oncology sites throughout the Northwest US. He’s independently built multiple software tools to help oncologists in the practical realities of their daily work.

    Before Lexent Bio, he has served as Director of Translational Medicine at Genomic Health and as Vice President leading oncology development at Counsyl, integrating science with clinical product development. He is a steering committee member of the ASCO QOPI, a quality care initiative.

    BioDr. Thai is a fellowship-trained specialist in geriatric medicine. She provides care at the Stanford Senior Care Clinic.

    She completed her fellowship training at the University of California, San Francisco. She is board-certified in family medicine through the American Board of Family Medicine .

    Dr. Thai earned her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She completed her residency in family medicine at McLaren Flint/Michigan State University College of Human Medicine where she served as chief resident.

    She also holds a Master of Public Health degree from Columbia University.

    Dr. Thai has a background in clinical and population health research. She recently received a grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation to study the role of motivational interviewing in smoking cessation.

    She contributed to research in rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and ankylosing spondylitis in the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

    Dr. Thai was also an endourology research fellow in the Department of Urology at Mount Sinai Health System. Research focused on renal stone disease, clinical markers and outcomes, and testing and development of new technologies.

    She has co-authored articles on topics such as caregivers’ communication with elders living with late-life disability, palliative care practices in diverse settings, and the social consequences of forgetfulness and Alzheimer’s disease. These articles appeared in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Journal of Palliative Medicine, Journal of Mental Health Aging, and other peer-reviewed journals

    Dr. Thai is a member of the American Geriatrics Society, American Academy of Family Physicians, and California Academy of Family Physicians. She is also an inductee of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

    She has volunteered with homeless shelters, women’s advocacy groups, Goodwill, the American Red Cross, and AmeriCorps.

    Dr. Thai is fluent in English and proficient in speaking Vietnamese.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe long-term goal of my research is the repair of damaged corticospinal circuitry. Therapeutic regeneration strategies will be informed by an understanding both of corticospinal motor neuron (CSMN) development and of events occurring in CSMN in the setting of spinal cord injury. MicroRNAs are small, non-coding RNAs that regulate the expression of “suites” of genes. The work in my lab seeks to identify microRNA controls over CSMN development and over the CSMN response to spinal cord injury.

    BioDr. Therkelsen is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neuro-oncologist with the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences.

    She diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions including primary brain tumors and cancers of the central nervous system, metastatic disease to the brain and spinal cord, and neurologic complications of cancer. She prepares a personalized, comprehensive care plan for each patient she serves.

    Dr. Therkelsen’s research interests include clinical trials of new therapeutics, as well as ways to reduce toxicities that some patients may experience when receiving cancer treatment. Her fellowship research projects included a study of survival and long-term function among patients treated for primary central nervous system lymphoma. She also received a pre-doctoral National Institutes of Health Intramural Research Training Award for her work with the Framingham Heart Study.

    She has published in Current Treatment Options in Oncology and other peer-reviewed journals. She has presented to her peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including the annual meetings of the Society of Neuro-Oncology and of the American Academy of Neurology.

    Dr. Therkelsen is a member of the Society of Neuro-Oncology and the American Academy of Neurology.
