Argenta Price
Lecturer
BioArgenta Price is a lecturer and teaching and learning specialist in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. Prior to joining SDSS, she received her PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from UCSF, then pivoted to be a science education researcher in Carl Wieman’s research group at Stanford for 7 years. She led workshops for faculty members and co-taught a Stanford course about the principles of learning and effective teaching practices. Her research focused on defining the process of solving complex problems and developing better ways to measure and teach the decisions that comprise that process. As a lecturer in SDSS, she is working with Drs. Majumdar and Moler to design their new course, “Decision Making for Sustainable Energy,” in which students will learn to make problem-solving decisions in the context of solving sustainable energy problems at personal, local, and national scales. She will also collaborate with any instructors who are interested in incorporating active learning and inclusive teaching practices, trying innovative assessment methods, measuring the effectiveness of their courses, or developing materials for new courses or topics.

Kelsey C. Priest
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioKelsey Priest, MD, PhD, MPH is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. Dr. Priest completed her MD/PhD at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and the joint School of Public Health at OHSU-Portland State University. She earned her doctorate in Health Systems & Policy, defending her mixed-methods dissertation titled "Hospital-Based Services for Opioid Use Disorder: A Study of Supply-Side Attributes." Dr. Priest began her residency at UPMC's Western Psychiatric Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, before transferring to Stanford, where she completed the remainder of her psychiatry residency training. During her third year at Stanford, she served as the Inpatient Chief Resident, and as a fourth year resident was part of the first group of residents designated as Social Medicine & Humanities Research Track Residents. While in residency, Dr. Priest completed a two-year psychoanalytic psychotherapy program as part of the Palo Alto Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program. In 2025, Dr. Priest completed a multi-week training in Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET).
Clinically, Dr. Priest focuses on caring for patients with functional and somatic distress, as well as those requiring high-acuity psychiatric services. Dr. Priest's research explores health service, system, and policy-related issues that impact access to evidence-based care for people with mental health and substance use disorders. -
Soledad Artiz Prillaman
Assistant Professor of Political Science
BioSoledad Artiz Prillaman is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Stanford University. Her research lies at the intersections of comparative political economy, development, and gender, with a focus in South Asia. Specifically, her research addresses questions such as: What are the political consequences of development and development policies, particularly for women’s political behavior? How are minorities, specifically women, democratically represented and where do inequalities in political engagement persist and how are voter demands translated into policy and governance? In answering these questions, she utilizes mixed methods, including field experiments, surveys, and in-depth qualitative fieldwork. She received her Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University in 2017 and a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Texas A&M University in 2011.

Angela Damia Primbas, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Primbas is a board-certified physician in both Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine who practices at Stanford Concierge Medicine.
Dr. Primbas was raised in Ohio. She completed her undergraduate studies at Harvard University where she graduated with honors. After college, Dr. Primbas worked as a middle school teacher before deciding to pursue her career in medicine.
She moved to the west coast to attend medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She was active in multiple free clinics and completed additional training in global health. She spent several months in Peru conducting public health research. Her work was published in peer-reviewed medical journals and presented at multiple national conferences. Upon graduation, she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Dr. Primbas completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford University, where she helped found the Ambulatory Care Excellence Program, a resident training track aimed at enhancing skills needed to provide excellent comprehensive care in the primary care setting.
During residency, Dr. Primbas developed a particular interest in healthy aging and longevity, and pursued a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at UCSF.
Dr. Primbas joined the faculty at the UCLA School of Medicine after completing her residency and fellowship training. She practiced in both inpatient and primary care settings while at UCLA. She also worked with her endocrinology colleagues to provide care in the osteoporosis clinic, and has a particular interest in bone health and postmenopausal aging. Dr. Primbas was very involved in education of medical students, residents and geriatrics fellows while at UCLA, and served as a co-lead for the Early Authentic Clinical Experience program for first-year medical students.
Dr. Primbas is excited to be back at Stanford, and to continue her work providing comprehensive and patient-centered primary care.

Lance Prince
Philip Sunshine, MD, Professor of Neonatology
BioLawrence (Lance) S. Prince, MD, PhD, is the Philip Sunshine Endowed Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. Prince was previously a Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Neonatology at the University of California, San Diego and Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego.
Dr. Prince has a long and distinguished career mentoring clinical and scientific trainees and students, many of whom have gone on to establish their own successful careers as academic physician investigators. As a physician scientist, Dr. Prince leads a basic science laboratory focusing on the mechanisms regulating developmental immunology and lung injury and repair. Dr. Prince received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from University of Miami, an MD/PhD with a focus in Cell Biology from University of Alabama at Birmingham, and postdoctoral fellowship, Pediatrics residency, and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship training at the University of Iowa. Before arriving in California, Dr. Prince was an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Prince’s research interests include the molecular and cellular mechanisms controlling lung development and the maturation of the fetal and neonatal immune systems. He has a particular clinical interest in managing and treating neonatal lung diseases, especially bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in babies born extremely preterm. Dr. Prince’s research team focuses primarily on the development of innate immunity during fetal life as it impacts health and disease in preterm infants. The laboratory is investigating how microbes including Group B streptococcus exploit the unique features of neonatal macrophages to avoid immune detection and cause disease, as well as leading a number of clinical and translational investigations. -
John R. Pringle

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMuch of our research exploits the power of yeast as an experimentally tractable model eukaryote to investigate fundamental problems in cell and developmental biology such as the mechanisms of cell polarization and cytokinesis. In another project, we are developing the small sea anemone Aiptasia as a model system for study of the molecular and cellular biology of dinoflagellate-cnidarian symbiosis, which is critical for the survival of most corals but still very poorly understood.

Friedrich Prinz

BioFritz Prinz is the Leonardo Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Senior Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy. He also serves as the Director of the Nanoscale Prototyping Laboratory and Faculty Co-director of the NPL-Affiliate Program. A solid-state physicist by training, Prinz leads a group of doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, and visiting scholars who are addressing fundamental issues on energy conversion and storage at the nanoscale. In his Laboratory, a wide range of nano-fabrication technologies are employed to build prototype fuel cells and capacitors with induced topological electronic states. We are testing these concepts and novel material structures through atomic layer deposition, scanning tunneling microscopy, impedance spectroscopy and other technologies. In addition, the Prinz group group uses atomic scale modeling to gain insights into the nature of charge separation and recombination processes. Before coming to Stanford in 1994, he was on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. Prinz earned a PhD in Physics at the University of Vienna.

Much of this research has focused on viral infections, especially those caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). I have conducted a number of studies concerned with the epidemiology of HSV-2 infections in pregnant women, their partners, and neonates.

Sarah Prodan
Assistant Professor of French and Italian
BioI am an Italianist, an early modernist and a Michelangelo scholar. My primary research and teaching contributions center on Italian literature and cultural history of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with a special focus on lyric poetry and on the relationship between literature and spirituality.
My first monograph, Michelangelo’s Christian Mysticism: Spirituality, Poetry and Art in Sixteenth-Century Italy (Cambridge University Press, 2014), was awarded the Jeanne and Aldo Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies by the Modern Language Association in 2013. Literary, cultural and historical in scope, this study considers the Florentine artist’s poetics and aesthetics in light of medieval and Renaissance Augustinianism, lay religious culture, and the Italian Reformation, respectively, to provide a more nuanced understanding of Michelangelo’s spirituality and how it functioned.
My current book project, Poetics of Piety in Early Modern Italy, builds on this earlier work to consider the ways in which male and female poets of devotional verse engaged the Word in text, image, and imagination in the sixteenth century. Combining diachronic and synchronic approaches to the study of early modern Italian verse, this project examines relations among religious practice and poetic form in the pre-Tridentine and post-Tridentine periods.
Other book-length projects include Friendship and Sociability in Premodern Europe: Contexts, Concepts and Expressions (Toronto: CRRS, 2014), a co-edited volume that explores ideas and instances of friendship in premodern Europe through a well-ordered series of investigations into amity in discrete social and cultural contexts related to some of the most salient moments and expressions of European history and civilization: the courtly love tradition, Renaissance humanism; the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation and the attendant confessionalization and wars of religion; Jesuit missions; the colonization of America; and lastly, expanding trade patterns in the Age of Discovery.
Prior to joining Stanford, I was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of History at Harvard University and at the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies at Victoria University in the University of Toronto, where I designed and taught early modern cultural history courses and lectured on Italian language and literature.
In parallel to my scholarly pursuits, I am completing a work of historical fiction inspired by my academic research. Taking the dramatic events of the French invasion of Italy in the fall of 1494 as its context, Imminence: Florence, 1494 recounts the riveting and tumultuous history of the dangerously divided Florentine city-state through the experiences of a lay female visionary temporarily resident in an elite nunnery tied to the highest echelons of political power. An imagined female story seamlessly inserted into a famously documented male history, Imminence weaves strands of verisimilitude with threads of reality, to offer a tapestry of fiction and non-fiction that touches on persistent human challenges – personal, social, and political. An exercise in empathic historical imagination, this novel explores women’s political, social, cultural, and religious history during the exciting and pivotal moment of the Italian Renaissance.

Shannon Pufahl
Lecturer
BioShannon Pufahl is a Jones Lecturer in the Creative Writing Program. She teaches fiction, creative nonfiction, and writing across genres. She was a Stegner Fellow in fiction at Stanford, where she received a Centennial award, the University's highest honor for teaching assistants. She has published essays in The Threepenny Review, The Paris Review, The New York Review of Books, and elsewhere, on topics ranging from John Brown and the Antebellum Midwest, to personal memoir. Her novel, On Swift Horses, about gambling, sex, and the post-war American West, was published in 2019 by Riverhead Books.
Shannon also holds a PhD in American Literature and Culture from the University of California, Davis. Her dissertation traces the animal welfare movement in the U.S. from its origins in the 19th-century, through the intense debates about animal life, suffering, and intelligence at century's end, and into the young adult animal novels of the early 20th-century.
She is the co-coordinator of The Writer's Studio, a weekly workshop series sponsored by the Creative Writing Program, the Stanford Storytelling Project, and the Hume Center for Writing and Speaking. She also teaches in the Stanford Arts Intensive and online in Summer Session. -

Elisabetta Viani Puglisi
Associate Professor (Research) of Structural Biology
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsViral infections and subsequent host response depend on multiple RNA-protein interaction. My research focuses on the structural and functional characterization of RNA-protein complexes involved in viral infection. Current research aims to understand how the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) initiates its replication upon host infection. We use NMR spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography to study the structure of the initiation complex, formed by a host tRNA and HIV genomic RNA, coupled with biochemical and biophysical methods to understand functional properties. The goal of this research is to gain a molecular view of HIV replication initiation, and use this information to develop new therapeutic approaches to combat HIV.

Our goal is a unified picture of structure, dynamics and function. We are currently focused on the mechanism and regulation of translation, and the role of RNA in viral infections. A long-term goal is to target processes involving RNA with novel therapeutic strategies.

Benjamin Pulli, MD

BioDr. Pulli is a dual fellowship trained diagnostic and interventional neuroradiologist with a focus on vascular disorders of the brain, head, neck, and spine. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Radiology, Neuroradiology Division.
Having grown up in Austria, Dr. Pulli moved to the US after completing medical school in Innsbruck, Austria. He completed post-doctoral research training in stroke imaging in the Division of Neuroradiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as in experimental molecular imaging techniques of neuroinflammatory disorders at the Center for Systems Biology of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
He completed residency training in Radiology and fellowship training in Diagnostic Neuroradiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He then completed a second fellowship in interventional neuroradiology/neurointerventional surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
After having graduated from fellowship, Dr. Pulli then spent more than a year practicing Interventional Neuroradiology at Pacific Neuroscience Institute in Los Angeles. He employs state-of-the-art minimally invasive endovascular and percutaneous surgical techniques to treat patients with brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural arteriovenous fistulas, carotid artery stenosis, acute stroke, chronic subdural hematoma, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, vascular tumors, and chronic back pain.
His research focuses on advanced imaging techniques for acute ischemic stroke and other neurovascular diseases. He has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and received scientific grants from institutions such as the Radiological Society of North America and the Ernst Schering Foundation. In addition, he has made invited presentations to his peers at meetings of organizations such as the American Society of Neuroradiology, Radiological Society of North American, European Congress of Radiology, and Western Neuroradiological Society.
He is a member of the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery. -
Stephanie Pun, MD

Krishna Pundi
Clinical Instructor, Medicine - Cardiovascular Medicine
BioKrishna Pundi, MD is a cardiac electrophysiologist and health services and outcomes researcher with a clinical interest in the management of ventricular arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation.
Dr. Pundi leads a multidisciplinary research program to study (1) clinical and arrhythmia-specific factors that predict cardiovascular risk for ventricular arrhythmias, (2) the interplay of frailty and obesity with atrial fibrillation outcomes, and (3) the role of digital health and wearables in arrhythmia care. He has led grant-funded research through the NIH, FDA, and ACC and collaborations with large device and quality databases including AHA’s Get With the Guidelines. He has a special interest in innovation and regulatory science, having organized national Think Tanks of patients, investigators, and FDA to define the scientific and clinical use of wearable monitors. Dr. Pundi holds leadership roles through the American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm Society, Cardiovascular Sciences Research Consortium, and HRX - an innovation-focused meeting of clinicians, researcher, and industry. -
Patrick Lee Purdon

BioMy research integrates neuroimaging, biomedical signal processing, and the systems neuroscience of general anesthesia and sedation.
My group conducts human studies of anesthesia-induced unconsciousness, using a variety of techniques including multimodal neuroimaging, high-density EEG, and invasive neurophysiological recordings used to diagnose medically refractory epilepsy. We also develop novel methods in neuroimaging and biomedical signal processing to support these studies, as well as methods for monitoring level of consciousness under general anesthesia using EEG. -

BioDr. Pyle is a child psychologist who has worked in clinic, hospital, school, and private practice settings for over 20 years. She is also an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Stanford University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences where she supervises and teaches the child and adolescent psychiatry fellows. She received her B.A. in Human Biology from Stanford University and her Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Abdullah Qatu, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Qatu is a board-certified, fellowship-trained pain management specialist at the Stanford Health Care Pain Management Center. He is also a clinical instructor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Division of Pain Medicine, at Stanford University School of Medicine.
He specializes in the diagnosis and management of many different types of pain, including nerve pain, joint pain, cancer pain, low back and neck pain. Dr. Qatu obtained his medical degree from the New York University (NYU) Grossman School of Medicine. He continued on at NYU to complete his residency in anesthesiology after completing an internship in general surgery. He subsequently completed his pain medicine fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Qatu believes in utilizing a multimodal approach for pain management. This includes interventional, pharmacological, rehabilitative and psychological strategies. He is well-trained in a wide variety of interventional modalities that include injections, epidurals, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablations, peripheral nerve stimulation, spinal cord/dorsal root ganglion stimulation and minimally invasive decompression. His research focuses on the clinical use of neuromodulation for various types of pain. In addition, he has investigated whether certain demographic and socioeconomic variables, as well as psychiatric illness, affect the outcomes of various orthopaedic traumas and surgeries. Dr. Qatu has presented his research at conferences throughout the U.S. and in Canada. -
Lei (Stanley) Qi
Associate Professor of Bioengineering
BioDr. Lei (Stanley) Qi (publishes as Lei S. Qi) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University, an Institute Scholar at Sarafan ChEM-H, and a Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator. Trained in physics and mathematics (Tsinghua University) and bioengineering (UC Berkeley), he was a Systems Biology Fellow at UCSF before joining the Stanford faculty in 2014.
Qi is a pioneer in CRISPR technology and genome engineering. His lab created the first nuclease-deactivated Cas9 (dCas9) for targeted gene regulation, establishing CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) and CRISPR activation (CRISPRa). Since then, his group has expanded CRISPR from an editing tool into a platform for programmable control of dynamic and spatial cell state, integrating scalable perturbation, live-cell and super-resolution imaging, and computation-guided design. This work has produced technologies for multiplexed transcriptome regulation, programmable 3D genome organization, spatial RNA logistics control, and real-time visualization of chromatin and transcriptional events in living cells.
A distinctive focus of the Qi lab is closed-loop biology, combining perturbation with high-content measurements to infer mechanisms and iteratively refine control strategies. The lab develops platforms spanning multiplexed transcriptional and epigenetic control, spatial genome–transcriptome organization, and quantitative live-cell imaging of chromatin and transcriptional dynamics. A compact nuclease-dead CRISPR epigenetic editor from this technology lineage has advanced to first-in-human clinical testing for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD; NCT06907875), underscoring the translational potential of principle-driven control systems.
Beyond single-cell control, Qi’s lab is building a framework for synthetic cell–cell communication, with particular emphasis on the bidirectional interplay between immune cells and neurons. The lab’s goal is to move beyond describing molecular parts to discovering fundamental control principles in living systems: how regulatory landscapes create stable states and memory, how spatial genome–RNA organization shapes dynamic responses, and how engineered cell–cell interactions can generate emergent multicellular behaviors. By integrating experimental bioengineering with computation and machine learning, the lab aims to identify generalizable rules linking molecular programs to systems-level physiology and disease trajectories and to translate those rules into next-generation therapeutic cells. -
Xiaoliang Qi
Professor of Physics
BioMy current research interest is the interplay of quantum entanglement, quantum gravity and quantum chaos. The characterization of quantum information and quantum entanglement has provided novel understanding to space-time geometry, and relate the dynamics of chaotic many-body systems to the dynamics of space-time, i.e. quantum gravity theory. Based on recent progress in holographic duality (also known as AdS/CFT), my goal is to use tools such as tensor networks and solvable models to provide more microscopic understanding to the emergent space-time geometry from quantum states and quantum dynamics.
I am also interested in topological states and topological phenomena in condensed matter systems.

Yushen Qian, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Radiation Oncology - Radiation Therapy
BioDr. Qian is a board-certified radiation oncologist and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology.
In his clinical practice, he sub-specializes in genitourinary (including prostate and bladder cancer) and Head and Neck malignancies, but also treats a broad spectrum of other disease subsites including lung/thoracic, gastrointestinal, brain, lymphoma, and breast tumors. For each patient, he develops a comprehensive, individualized, and compassionate care plan customized to individual needs. His goal is to deliver the most effective cancer treatment to help patients enjoy the best possible health and quality of life.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Qian serves as the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Stanford South Bay Cancer Center. He also serves as the Radiation Oncology Network Director of Clinical Research and has spearheaded opening of multiple NRG Oncology clinical trials at Stanford South Bay Cancer Center.
Dr. Qian is also actively involved in the Stanford Radiation Oncology residency program. He created and oversees a monthly mentorship roundtable series to assist residents with multiple aspects of their clinical training and career progression.
Outside of work, Dr. Qian enjoys spending time with his family and exploring the great outdoors of Northern California. -
Jian Qin
Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering
BioJian Qin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Stanford University. His research focuses on development of microscopic understanding of structural and physical properties of soft matters by using a combination of analytical theory, scaling argument, numerical computation, and molecular simulation. He worked as a postdoctoral scholar with Juan de Pablo in the Institute for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago and with Scott Milner in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota under the supervision of David Morse and Frank Bates. His research covers self-assembly of multi-component polymeric systems, molecular origin of entanglement and polymer melt rheology, coacervation of polyelectrolytes, Coulomb interactions in dielectrically heterogeneous electrolytes, and surface charge polarizations in particulate aggregates in the absence or presence of flow.

Tairan Qiu

BioI, 邱泰然, Tairan Qiu (she/her/她), am an Assistant Professor of English Language Arts and Literacy Education in the Graduate School of Education. Prior to my doctoral studies, I was an ELA and ESOL teacher. As a transnational migrant and East Asian woman, my research is at the intersection of language, literacy, culture, race, gender, and im/migration. My research agenda is oriented around critically unpacking the dynamic language and literacy practices of transnational youth and families, centering their stories and experiences to shape research-informed change in their schools, communities, and homes, and sustaining their whole cultural, linguistic, and literate repertoire.
I am committed to working in and with historically marginalized communities through community-centered research, teaching, and service. For example, funded by the Community Literacies Collaboratory, I am the co-founder of the University of Houston-Project Row Houses Community Literacies Center in Third Ward, Houston, TX. This arts-based Community Literacies Center offers weekly multiliteracies events for predominantly Black, Asian, Latiné, and translingual children, youth, and caregivers, where they celebrate their vibrant literacy practices in community with one another. Currently, I am working with a collective of nine transnational Girls of Color to narrate their transnational and translingual literacies and advocacy in and across their respective communities. -

BioDr. Michael Quach, MD serves as Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Quach is a board certified psychiatrist with over 20 years of administrative and clinical experience.
Dr. Quach completed his medical training at Stanford University School of Medicine and psychiatric residency training at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. He served as Chief Resident in the Stanford Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and was recipient of the prestigious Stanford George Gulevich Humanistic Medicine Award in 2006.

Helen Quinn
Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics, Emerita
BioHelen Quinn received her Ph.D in physics at Stanford in 1967. She has taught physics at both Harvard and Stanford. Dr. Quinn work as a particle physicist has been honored by the Dirac Medal (from the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Italy) and the Klein Medal (from The Swedish National Academy of Sciences and Stockholm University) as well as the Sakurai Prize (from the American Physical Society), the Compton medal (from the American Institute of Physics, awarded once every 4 years) and the 2018 Benjamin Franklin Medal for Physics (from the Franklin Institute). She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Science and the American Philosophical Society. She is a Fellow and former president of the American Physical Society. She is originally from Australia and is an Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia.
Dr. Quinn has been active in science education for some years, and since her retirement in 2010 this has been her major activity. She was a founding member of the Contemporary Physics Education Project (CPEP) which produced a well-known standard-model poster for schools in 1987 (see photo). She served as Chair of the US National Academy of Sciences Board on Science Education (BOSE) from 2009-2014. She was as a member of the BOSE study committee that developed the report “Taking Science to School” and chaired the committee for the “Framework for K-12 Science Education”, which is the basis of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and similar standards now adopted by about 30 states in the US, and has been influential internationally as well. She also contributed to follow-up NRC studies on assessment and implementation of NGSS. From 2015-2018 Helen served at the request of the President of Ecuador as a member of the “Comision Gestora” to help plan and guide the initial development of the National University of Education of Ecuador. -

Orlando Quintero, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Infectious Diseases
BioDr. Orlando Quintero is a board-certified, fellowship trained internist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. He is also clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, at Stanford University School of Medicine.
As a clinician, Dr. Quintero diagnoses and treats infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients. This includes the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infections in patients who are immunosuppressed because of Solid Organ Transplantation, Bone Marrow (Hematopoeitic Cell) Transplants, Hematologic Malignancies, Chemotherapy for Solid Tumors, HIV who receive Chemotherapy, Solid Organ or Bone Marrow Transplants Immunomodulators for Auto-Immune Diseases and other forms of immunodeficiency.
Dr. Quintero has published on topics including coronavirus in kidney transplant patients, prevention of cytomegalovirus in heart transplant patients, and prevention of urinary tract infections in renal transplant patients. His work has appeared in publications including Transplant Infectious Disease, Emerging Infectious Diseases, and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation.
He has delivered presentations at meetings of organizations including the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, and American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Topics of his presentations have included prevention of cytomegalovirus, prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections, Chagas disease in New York City, and more.
Currently, Dr. Quintero is conducting research on treatment of patients with COVID-19, prevention and treatment of invasive fungal infections of the gastrointestinal tract in immunocompromised patients, and the epidemiology of invasive fungal infections in heart transplant recipients.
Among his awards, He has received honors for his teaching and research from Albert Einstein College. He also has earned recognition from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the American Society of Transplantation.
Dr. Quintero’s volunteer community service includes participation in health fairs to promote HIV testing and hypertension control, plus disease management in the Garifuna population in New York – descendants of an Afro-indigenous population from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent.
He is a member of the Infectious Disease Society of American, Infectious Diseases Association of California, American Society of Transplantation, and HIV Medicine Association. -
Sean Quirin
Assistant Professor (Research) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Major Laboratories and Clinical & Translational Neurosciences Incubator)
BioDr. Quirin's laboratory develops minimally invasive methods to explore the causal role individual neurons play in the emergence of behavior. To this end, the lab's strength is the development of techniques which manipulate light to both detect and restoratively modulate brain activity down to the single-neuron scale. His lab continues to innovate with new tools which map these functional relationships onto the molecular and anatomical architecture of the brain. Utilizing these techniques, the lab aims to characterize how ensembles of neurons coordinate to encode and communicate information throughout the brain for sensing and behavior.

Jennifer Anne Rabbitts

BioJennifer Rabbitts, MD is Professor and Chief of Pediatric Pain Management at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Rabbitts directs an NIH-funded research laboratory focused on improving long-term pain and health outcomes in children and adolescents undergoing surgery. Her research is devoted to understanding and preventing chronic postsurgical pain, a disabling condition affecting 20% youth undergoing major surgery. Her current research studies investigate the role of biopsychosocial mechanisms including child psychosocial factors, parental/family factors, and psychophysical processes underlying acute to chronic pain transition. Current clinical trials focus on testing feasibility and efficacy of psychosocial and complementary and integrative interventions to improve acute postsurgical pain and prevent transition to chronic pain.
Dr Rabbitts is passionate about mentoring, and is a PI for the NIH HEAL PAIN Training grant in Maternal and Child Pain and Health at Stanford. She serves as section editor for Psychology, Psychiatry and Brain Neuroscience Section for Pain Medicine, and serves on the editorial boards for Pediatric Anesthesia and Journal of Pain.

Marlene Rabinovitch
Dwight and Vera Dunlevie Professor of Pediatric Cardiology
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research program seeks to identify the cellular and molecular programs regulating vascular and lung development, through the use of cultured cells and tissues and mouse and rat models. We then determine how these programs are perturbed by genetic abnormalities or injurious processes associated with disease, focusing on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a fatal complication in children with heart defects, and a condition of unknown etiology primarily in young women.

Helge Raeder MD PhD
Visiting Professor, Genetics
BioHelge Ræder is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen (UiB), Norway and a Senior Consultant in Pediatric Endocrinology at Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, Norway. With a background in cellular biology and diabetes research, he has significantly contributed to understanding diabetes through stem cell research. He has been a visiting scholar at Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School with C. Ronald Kahn (2005-2006) and with Rohit N Kulkarni (2010-2011). As the Vice Dean of Innovation at UiB (2017-2024), he has spearheaded the establishment of ecosystems that catalyze breakthrough innovations, including a new Medical Innovation Centre. His research aims to unravel the biology of diabetes and endocrine disorders, focusing on the interplay between genetics, proteomics, and stem cell biology. Dr. Ræder's work has resulted in publications in high-impact journals including Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Metabolism, Diabetes, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research and Nature Reviews Endocrinology. He has been recognized with several awards, including the Young Investigator’s Award from the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes. He has been an invited speaker at the IPITA-JDRF-HSCI Key opinion leader´s meeting on stem cell-derived beta cells at Harvard Medical School. Currently, he is a visiting professor at Stanford University, contributing to precision health research focusing on developing endocrine digital twins at Prof. Michael Snyder's Lab.

Nilima Ragavan
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics - Neonatology
BioDr Nilima Ragavan is an experienced clinician who has expertise in the care of newborns ranging from critically ill to well babies. She is passionate about education and is the director of the Stanford pediatric resident rotation in the neonatal intensive care unit. She has led several multi disciplinary teams to India, and has organized and conducted international neonatal and perinatal conferences. She is a member of the palliative care team and serves as a mentor to junior faculty. She is the medical director of the Packard Special Care nursery at Sequoia, and also attends in the NICU at Stanford.

Srinivas Raghu

BioI am interested in the emergent behavior of quantum condensed matter systems. Some recent research topics include non-Fermi liquids, quantum criticality, statistical mechanics of strongly interacting and disordered quantum systems, physics of the half-filled Landau level, quantum Hall to insulator transitions, superconductor-metal-insulator transitions, and the phenomenology of quantum materials.
Past contributions that I'm particularly proud of include the co-founding of the subject of topological photonics (with Duncan Haldane), scaling theories of non-Fermi liquid metals (with Shamit Kachru and Gonzalo Torroba), Euclidean lattice descriptions of Chern-Simons matter theories and their dualities in 2+1 dimensions (with Jing-Yuan Chen and Jun Ho Son), and 'dual' perspectives of quantum Hall transitions (with Prashant Kumar and Michael Mulligan). -

Ehsan Rahimy
Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor, Ophthalmology
BioDr. Ehsan Rahimy specializes in the medical and surgical management of diseases affecting the retina, with a clinical expertise in macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular hole, macular pucker/epiretinal membranes, and uveitis.
Dr. Rahimy has authored well over 100 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, as well as other non-peer reviewed literature. He presents regularly at national and international ophthalmic meetings, having contributed over 200 conference abstracts.
He is passionate about the interplay between technology and medicine, and how ongoing advancements will transform healthcare delivery in the near future. Dr. Rahimy is frequently consulted for collaborative research endeavors and advises on numerous early stage companies involved in ophthalmology, telemedicine, A.I., and other medtech innovation.
Dr. Rahimy graduated with highest distinction from the University of Michigan, followed by receiving his medical degree, with high honors, at Baylor College of Medicine. During this time, he was one of a select few junior inductees into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society. He went on to complete his ophthalmology residency at the world-renowned Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA, recognized as one of the premier residency programs in the country, where he received the Pepose-Saltzman Young Investigator Research Award, Henry & Lilian Nesburn Research Award, and the Devgan Outstanding Surgical Resident Award. Afterwards, he pursued subspecialty training in vitreoretinal surgery at Wills Eye Hospital, considered the preeminent retinal fellowship program in the country, under the guidance and mentorship of many of the field's leaders. While there, he was awarded a Heed Fellowship, the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Award, and the William B. Tasman Outstanding Fellow Award. -
Elham Rahimy, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Radiation Oncology - Radiation Therapy
BioDr. Rahimy is a radiation oncologist who treats patients with brain, spine, gastrointestinal, and metastatic tumors. She received her medical training at Yale, followed by residency at Stanford. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Stanford Department of Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Rahimy's technical expertise includes CyberKnife Radiosurgery and MRI-guided adaptive planning. She is also actively involved in radiation oncology research and clinical trials. Her interests include improving patient and resident education, and enhancing patient quality of life and survivorship. She leads quality initiatives as a Quality Physician Improvement Leader, and serves as the Medical Student Clerkship Director. -
Mobeen Rahman

Prior to joining faculty as an assistant professor at Stanford University, I completed a head and neck surgical pathology fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Center (2019). Following this subspecialty fellowship, I was faculty as a head and neck only pathologist at Cleveland Clinic for three years. -
Zakia Rahman, MD FAAD
Clinical Professor, Dermatology
BioDr. Zakia Rahman is a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine where she directs the resident laser and aesthetic clinic. She is Assistant Chief of the Livermore division of the Palo Alto Veterans Healthcare system where she co-directs dermatologic surgery. Dr. Rahman graduated with distinction as a Biodesign Faculty Fellow from the Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign. She is Affiliate Faculty at the Stanford Center on Longevity where she and her colleagues have launched the Program on Aesthetics & Culture. Dr. Rahman is an invited lecturer nationally and internationally on skin longevity, laser and aesthetic dermatologic surgery, artificial intelligence in aesthetics, social media beauty ideals, physician burnout/wellness, and skin of color. She is a media expert and has been featured in the NYT, Bloomberg News, Huffington Post, NBC, CBS, Elle, Washington Post, LA Times, and Scientific American. She has helped pioneer lasers and energy based devices for safe and efficacious treatment of skin of color. She serves on the American Medical Association AI Subspecialty Collaborative and on the national board of directors for the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. She has also previously served as Chair of the Stanford School of Medicine Faculty Senate. Her numerous awards include the Melanie Grossman Award for leadership, mentorship, and advocacy for women in medical sciences as well as the American Academy of Dermatology Presidential Citation for advancing diversity in the field of dermatology.

Hannah Elizabeth Raila
Adjunct Clinical Instructor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Hannah Raila's training focuses the "diet" of visual information that we consume as we navigate the world (e.g., do we see the crack in the wall, or do we pass by it unaware?), the factors that predispose us to detect this emotional information in our environment the first place, and how this diet of information influences our emotions. To study our visual biases and how they relate to how we feel, she leverages tools from cognitive psychology - including eye tracking and continuous flash suppression (CFS).
As a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Carolyn Rodriguez's lab, she is particularly interested in links between visual attention and emotion in OCD, and whether biased visual processing of obsession-related cues contributes to symptom severity. -

Sameer Raina, MD, MBBS, MBA, FACC
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Cardiovascular Medicine
BioDr. Raina is a board-certified cardiologist in the General Cardiology clinic at Stanford Health Care and a member of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. He is also a clinical associate professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine.
His clinical interests include preventive cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation, and sports cardiology. In his recent positions at West Virginia University, he established the cardiology telemedicine program during and after the COVID pandemic. He applied his passion for cardiac rehab by creating individualized treatment plans for college athletes recovering from COVID. Dr. Raina is also passionate about building relationships with community doctors. He believes continuous communication is an essential part of excellent patient care.
Dr. Raina’s current research focuses on preventive cardiology, cardiac imaging, and outcomes research. He studies the outcomes of different cardiac interventions in specific patient populations. His research helps identify appropriate treatments for patients who have other conditions in addition to heart disease.
Dr. Raina eagerly anticipates joining the faculty of the Stanford South Asian Translational Heart Initiative (SSATHI). He is excited for the opportunity to address the high risk of cardiovascular diseases among South Asians. He looks forward to applying his clinical and research experience to support SSATHI’s mission to provide advanced care to ethnic populations disproportionately affected by these diseases.
Dr. Raina is a peer reviewer for several prestigious publications, including Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment and the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. He has also been an invited guest speaker at national and international meetings, including those for the International Congress of Cardiology and the World Congress of Cardiothoracic-Renal Diseases.
Dr. Raina is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and a member of the American College of Cardiology. -

Kristin Raj

BioDr. Raj specializes in the treatment of mood disorders with an expertise in neuromodulation and in the psychopharmacological management of bipolar disorder. She is chief of interventional psychiatry, including transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroconvulsive therapy, co-chief of mood disorders and chief of the bipolar clinic. She is the director of education for interventional psychiatry where she manages resident education in ECT and TMS and development of didactics. She is also co-director of the neuroscience curriculum for the psychiatry residency where she has worked to assess and create a new series of interactive lectures. She currently serves on the Board of Directors and the Education Committee of the Clinical TMS society. She is on the Board of Directors for the Foundation for the Advancement of Clinical TMS.

Rishi Raj
Clinical Professor, Medicine - Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine
BioDr. Rishi Raj is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Stanford University, where he directs the Interstitial Lung Disease program. He has practiced pulmonary and critical care medicine for over two decades and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of interstitial lung diseases.
His primary clinical interest encompasses a range of interstitial lung diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, other idiopathic interstitial lung diseases, drug-induced interstitial lung diseases, interstitial lung disease associated with connective tissue diseases such as scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, dermatomyositis, sarcoidosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and other various interstitial lung diseases. His other clinical interest is acute respiratory failure associated with interstitial lung diseases, and Dr. Raj attends regularly in the medical intensive care units.
He is a principal investigator and co-investigator in numerous clinical trials, examining new therapies for treating idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and other interstitial lung diseases.
Dr. Raj's current research focuses on the use of radiologic biomarkers to predict outcomes in various interstitial lung diseases, and leveraging large language models in clinical research. -
Shriti Raj

BioShriti is an Assistant Research Professor in Stanford’s Center for Biomedical Informatics Research and a Junior Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Human-Centered AI. Her research focuses on developing and evaluating human-centered decision-support techniques to help patients and clinicians make health data and algorithms actionable. She is particularly interested in creating tools to support the use of wearable health data and studying their impact on chronic condition management.

Ram Rajagopal
Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, of Electrical Engineering and Senior Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy
BioRam Rajagopal is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University, where he directs the Stanford Sustainable Systems Lab (S3L), focused on large-scale monitoring, data analytics and stochastic control for infrastructure networks, in particular, power networks. His current research interests in power systems are in the integration of renewables, smart distribution systems, and demand-side data analytics.
He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and an M.A. in Statistics, both from the University of California Berkeley, Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Texas, Austin and Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, Powell Foundation Fellowship, Berkeley Regents Fellowship and the Makhoul Conjecture Challenge award. He holds more than 30 patents and several best paper awards from his work and has advised or founded various companies in the fields of sensor networks, power systems, and data analytics. -
Nitya Rajeshuni
Clinical Instructor, Pediatrics - Critical Care
BioDr. Rajeshuni is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University. She is faculty with the Stanford Center for Asian Health Research and Education (CARE), the Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH), and the Maternal Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI). Dr. Rajeshuni earned her BS, MS in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, and MD from Stanford University. She completed residency training at the University of Pennsylvania and a Biodesign innovation fellowship at Harvard University.
Her research centers on advancing health equity among racial and ethnic minorities, with a particular focus on Asian populations. She investigates health disparities, access to care, and the implementation and evaluation of public and digital health solutions in the U.S. and low- and middle-income countries. Current projects include studying the impacts of maternal education and intimate partner violence on child outcomes. Her broader interests encompass promoting resilience and well-being in vulnerable communities worldwide and leveraging digital health to reduce health disparities. She is a recipient of a career development award through the CHIME Health Equity Scholars program funded by PCORI and will be studying the effects of social supports on resilience in pregnant people of minority descent. Her global collaborations include work with NGO Arogya World on diabetes prevention in India as a collaborator and member of the Board. She is also the Director of South Asia Outreach at Stanford CARE. She also serves as a Product Advisor to healthcare startup Yuimedi.
Dr. Rajeshuni is deeply committed to teaching and mentorship. At Stanford, she serves as Associate Program Director for CARE Scholars and the Team Science Fellowship, year-long data science programs that provide emerging researchers with structured mentorship, advanced analytical skills, and interdisciplinary collaboration to drive health equity research. She is Faculty Co-Director of FAMMED 210: The Healer’s Art, an international program offering a reflective, experiential course designed to nurture compassion, resilience, and the humanistic values essential to medicine. She mentors graduate, undergraduate, and high school students at Stanford and beyond, and serves as Faculty Advisor in the Department of Human Biology.
Outside academia, Dr. Rajeshuni is an accomplished vocalist, performing professionally with world music ensembles Wobbly World and San Francisco’s Peña Pachamama Carnaval Arts Program. -
Sachin Rajpal, MD
Clinical Instructor, Ophthalmology
BioDr. Sachin Rajpal is an ophthalmologist at Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Rajpal specializes in cataract surgery and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). He also focuses on the medical and surgical management of pterygium (growths on the white of the eye) and ocular (eye) surface disease. His approach emphasizes comprehensive, patient-centered care, combining clinical excellence with clear communication and individualized treatment planning. He is particularly passionate about improving access to surgical care and enhancing the patient experience through the thoughtful application of emerging technology.
His research interests include patient adoption of digital diagnostic tools, technology-driven vision testing, and the development and regulation of leading-edge ophthalmic devices. He is also part of the Stanford Medicine Byers Eye Institute team working on a whole-eye transplant project focusing on vision restoration. Dr. Rajpal is actively involved in translational research that bridges clinical needs with scalable solutions.
Dr. Rajpal’s work has been presented at major conferences, including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, American Society of Refractive and Cataract Surgery, and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). He has authored peer-reviewed studies on topics ranging from corneal melt (corneal breakdown) to divergence insufficiency (outward vision problems), wearable visual field testing, and economic models of ocular disease burden.
