Cybele A. Renault, MD, DTM&H, FIDSA
Clinical Professor, Medicine - Infectious Diseases
BioDr. Renault has devoted her career to caring for vulnerable patient populations, both domestically and overseas. She completed her medical school and residency training at the University of Chicago, caring for underserved patients on Chicago's South Side, followed by a Chief Resident year at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, the public hospital serving the uninsured in Chicago. She began her career in global health as an Infectious Diseases fellow at Stanford, validating low-cost HIV diagnostics in Burkina Faso, and providing clinical service and teaching in India and Zimbabwe as a fellow, and later in Thailand, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Ethiopia as one of our Infectious Diseases faculty. Her clinical work is focused on caring for our Veteran population, working to empower Veterans to engage in their care, often in the setting of significant mental illness.
Dr. Renault is most passionate about medical education and program development to combat global antimicrobial resistance through antimicrobial stewardship, to create opportunities for the Internal Medicine residents centering on caring for vulnerable patient populations, and to develop impactful and sustainable programs in collaboration with our low- and middle-income partners for our Center for Innovation in Global Health. She served as Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program for 4 years prior to transitioning to her current role as Program Lead for Global Health, for which she leads the Global Health Track for the Internal Medicine residency program and develops global health initiatives for the Department of Medicine. She co-founded and has been director of the Stanford 2-week intensive global health course since its inception in 2012, she has structured trainee and faculty rotations based on evolving needs of our partner sites in Uganda, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka, she is the faculty lead for the ID/antimicrobial stewardship partnership between Stanford and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya through the AMPATH Consortium, and she is leading Stanford's Internal Medicine virtual case-based education initiative to support our newest medical school partner in Negele Arsi, Ethiopia.
Dr. Renault strives to augment Stanford's contributions and support for underserved patient populations in the United States. She established resident rotations in Shiprock, New Mexico and Chinle, Arizona through the Indian Health Service, and she is Faculty Advisor for the Internal Medicine Health Equity, Advocacy and Research concentration in the residency program. She also aspires to improve resources for women physicians. In 2016, Dr. Renault established the GME Women in Medicine Leadership Council, with the intention of creating community and encouraging conversations about professional and personal life decisions as women in the field of medicine. She is passionate about mentoring through sharing personal experiences, creating an environment that encourages reflection, and building skills to address challenges unique to women in medicine.
In 2022, in recognition of her passion for medical education and her success in program development, Dr. Renault was asked to join the leadership at Palo Alto Veterans Health Care System as Deputy Designated Education Officer in the Office of Education. In this role, she works with rotation directors to optimize their respective rotations to offer robust educational opportunities for trainees across specialties who are rotating at the Palo Alto VA. -
Mara Rendi, MD, PhD
Clinical Professor, Pathology
BioDr. Rendi is a breast and gynecologic pathologist with a focus on the education of medical students, residents, and practicing pathologists. Her areas of interest include the utilization of molecular testing in breast cancer, management of high-risk lesions, ancillary testing to aid in the use of novel therapeutics, and development and delivery of effective pathology education to medical students. She is a nationally and internationally known medical educator having won multiple teaching awards for her innovative strategies in pathology education. She is actively involved in undergraduate medical education, resident education, and continuing medical education for practicing pathologists as well as a practicing breast and gynecologic pathologist.

Kavita Renduchintala

BioKavita Renduchintala, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) and completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at LAC + USC Medicine Center in Los Angeles.
Dr. Renduchintala’s clinical background includes caring for hospitalized patients across a range of internal medicine settings. Before joining Stanford, she worked at the University of Chicago, where she provided both general medicine and oncologic hospitalist care. She has also held roles in oncologic hospitalist medicine at Moffitt Cancer Center and in surgical co-management at Keck Hospital of USC.
Her academic interests focus on medical education, with a particular focus on transitions that occur during medical training. She is dedicated to supporting trainees and enhancing the learning environment in academic hospital medicine. Her research has also explored vaccine uptake among cancer survivors. -
Joan Ramon Resina
Professor of Iberian and Latin American Cultures and of Comparative Literature
BioProfessor Resina has authored thirteen books, most recently Luchino Visconti. Filmmaker and Philosopher. London: Bloomsbury, 2022. The book focuses on the director’s German Trilogy —The Damned (1969) Death in Venice (1971), and Ludwig (1972). This set of films is thematically unified through the exploration of decadence, combining a stunning aesthetic with philosophical implications. The book traces the philosophical themes, relating them to dominant currents of thought and sensibility in the periods under representation.
Resina is also the author of The Ghost in the Constitution: Historical Memory and Denial in Spanish Society. Liverpool University Press, 2017. This book is a reflection on the political use of historical memory focusing on the case of Spain. It analyses the philosophical implications of the transference of the notion of memory from the individual consciousness to the collective subject and considers the conflation of epistemology with ethics. A subtheme is the origin and transmission of political violence and its endurance in the form of “negationism”. The book engages controversial issues, such as the relation between memory and imputation, the obstacles to reconciliation, and the problems arising from the existence of not only different but also conflicting memories about the past. Another book from the same year is Josep Pla: The World Seen in the Form of Articles. Toronto University Press, 2017, which received the North American Catalan Society award for best book on Catalan Studies in 2019. This book condenses Pla's 47-volume work into 11 thematic units devoted to a central aspect of Pla's oeuvre. Resina explores the modalities of Pla's writing: stylistic, phenomenological, political, his relation to language, fiction, food, and landscape, and his approach to sexuality, women, and death. It introduces the reader to the colorful world of Catalonia's greatest 20th century prose writer through the author's gaze. Pla was a privileged observer of some of the crucial events of the 20th century, but he also captured the sensual infrastructure of his own country by recording every aspect of its reality.
Previous books include Del Hispanismo a los Estudios Ibéricos. Una propuesta federativa para el ámbito cultural. Madrid: Biblioteca Nueva, 2009. In this book, Resina lays out the rationale for the overcoming of Hispanic Studies by a new discipline of Iberian Studies, contending that the field's response to the crisis of the Humanities should not lie in the retrenchment into the national philological traditions. Another publication since joining Stanford is Barcelona's Vocation of Modernity: Rise and Decline of an Urban Image (Stanford UP, 2008). This book traces the development of Barcelona's modern image since the late 19th century through the 20th century through texts that foreground key social and historical issues. The book ends with a highly critical view on the post-Olympic period.
Resina has edited thirteen collections of essays on varied topics, most recently, What to do with ruins? Contemporary uses of ruination. Liverpool University Press, 2025. He has published extensively in specialized journals, such as PMLA, MLN, New Literary History, Modern Language Quarterly, and Angelaki, and has contributed to a large number of critical volumes. From 1999 to 2005 he was the Editor of Diacritics. For many years he has been a regular contributor to the Barcelona daily press. He has held teaching positions at Cornell University, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and Northwestern University, as well as visiting appointments at foreign universities, and received awards such as the Alexander von Humboldt and the Fullbright fellowships, and a fellowship at the Internationales Kolleg Morphomata Center for Advanced Studies of the University of Cologne. He has been distinguished with the Cross of St. George, one of the highest awards bestowed by the Government of Catalonia. -

James H Rhee
Clinical Assistant Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Rhee is a physiatrist and a clinical assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation. For patients with spine and musculoskeletal conditions, he focuses on providing exceptional care emphasizing minimally invasive solutions designed to optimize symptom managementand patient function.
Building on his background in engineering and on his specialized medical training and experience, Dr. Rhee welcomes opportunities to combine medical, mechanical, and interpersonal approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of each patient. He offers a full range of treatment modalities, including epidural steroid injection procedures, sacroiliac and facet joint injections, trigger point and soft tissue injections, orthopedic joint injections, and more. He also provides medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablations, and performs electrodiagnostic studies.
Among the wide range of conditions that Dr. Rhee treats are bursitis, herniated discs, radiculopathy, sciatica, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and spondylosis. He also has treated many forms of joint and muscle pain: facet joint, back, neck, hip, and sacroiliac joint pain.
Dr. Rhee’s experience encompasses short-term and long-term care for both acute and chronic conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries, spinal problems, mixed spine-neck and spine-shoulder disorders, and peripheral damage. Many of the cases he treats are injury-related, while a significant number of others are associated with aging. Another portion of his patient population presents with conditions stemming from developmental anomalies.
Prior to joining Stanford Health Care, Dr. Rhee was in private practice in the Bay Area. Previously, he also served in the US Army as a troop medical clinic officer-in-charge and as a brigade surgeon.
Dr. Rhee is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, North American Spine Society, and Spine Intervention Society. -

Her research focuses on circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) to detect minimal residual disease (MRD) in early-stage breast cancer, aiming to guide personalized treatment strategies. She is also developing novel approaches to enhance immunotherapy efficacy by modulating the tumor microenvironment, including early-phase trials that combine immunotherapy with radiotherapy. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study hearing from biophysical, molecular and signal processing perspectives. One focus is mechanotransduction, where sound is converted into an electrical signal. As a major site for dysfunction, a more detailed understand will provide a means toward intervention. We develop new antibiotics to limit ototoxicity. We investigate drug delivery methods from surgical approaches to slow release systems, including gene therapy tools. We are studying cognitive decline following hearing loss.

Joshua Richards
Clinical Assistant Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Richards is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery and has a Certified Additional Qualification for Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. For over 15 years he has specialized in the treatment of ligamentous, joint, tendon, nerve and bone injuries of the Hand, Elbow, Wrist and Shoulder.
He has served the Bay Area community as a UCSF Assistant Professor as a volunteer educator at San Francisco General Hospital, by teaching and treating complex trauma at the Alameda County Level One Trauma Center-Highland Hospital, and through various volunteer roles on athletic fields around the Bay.
Dr. Richards obtained his Bachelors Degree in Neurobiology at Cornell University, his Masters of Public Health at the Columbia University, and his Medical Degree at New York Medical College.
He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the San Francisco Orthopedic Residency Program. He then returned to Cornell University’s Hospital for Special Surgery to complete his fellowship training in hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery.
Until joining Stanford in 2023, he had been in private practice in the East Bay since 2006. He has volunteered locally in a variety of organizations and internationally on several continents. -

Judith Richardson
Senior Lecturer in English
BioJudith Richardson is a senior lecturer in English and associate director for the American Studies Program. After receiving her PhD from Harvard University, Judith began teaching at Stanford in 2001, offering a range of courses on American literature, including classes on women writers, early American literature, autobiographies, and the literature of cities. The author of Possessions: The History and Uses of Haunting in the Hudson Valley (2003) she continues to write and lecture—at Stanford and beyond—on the history and literature of New York, and on issues of place and cultural memory more broadly. She is currently working on a book about nineteenth-century America’s “plant-mindedness,” its multivalent obsession with vegetable matters.

John Rick

BioJohn Rick’s research focuses on prehistoric archaeology and anthropology of hunter-gatherers and initial hierarchical societies, stone tool analysis and digital methodologies, Latin America, Southwestern U.S. Rick’s major research efforts have included long-term projects studying early hunting societies of the high altitude puna grasslands of central Peru, and currently he directs a major research project at the monumental World Heritage site of Chavín de Huántar aimed at exploring the foundations of authority in the central Andes. Other field projects include work on early agricultural villages in the American Southwest, and a recently-initiated project on the Preclassic and Early Classic archaeology of the Guatemalan highlands near Panajachel, Atitlan. Current emphasis is on employing dimensional analytical digital techniques to the study of landscape and architecture, and on exploring the contexts and motivations for the development of sociopolitical inequalities.

John Rickford

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a variationist sociolinguist (someone who studies language variation, often quantitatively, in relation to society and culture). I’m interested in understanding the relations between language variation, social structure and meaning, and language change, from descriptive, theoretical and applied perspectives.
A lot of my work has been devoted to understanding the linguistic, social and stylistic constraints on specific linguistic variables, like the variation between Guyanese pronouns am, she, and her in “e like am” (deep creole, basilect) versus “e like she” (intermediate creole, mesolect) versus “He likes her” (standard English, acrolect). Or, to take an American example, the variation between all and like as quotative introducers in “He’s all/like ‘I don’t know’.” But I’ve also been concerned with trying to figure out where such variables come from historically, and whether they represent ongoing or completed change. I’ve also used the data from specific variables to address larger methodological and theoretical concepts in sociolinguistics, like how best to conceptualize the speech community and analyze linguistic variation by social class and ethnicity, or to assess the role of addressee versus topic in style shifting or the validity of the hyothesis that linguistic and social constraints are essentially independent (in their effects, not frequencies).
My data come primarily from English-based creoles of the Caribbean (especially my native Guyanese Creole, but also Jamaican and Barbadian) and from colloquial American English (especially African American Vernacular English, but also, recently, from computer corpora, like Google newsgroup data). I’ve also been interested, increasingly since the 1990s, in how sociolinguistic research can be applied to help us understand and overcome the challenges that vernacular and creole speakers face in schools, where standard/mainstream varieties are expected. -
Eric Rider, MD

BioDr. Rider is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neuromuscular neurologist with the Neuromuscular Program at the Stanford Neuroscience Health Center. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology & Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Rider specializes in treating neuromuscular disease, including motor neuron disease, disorders of the neuromuscular junction, peripheral and focal neuropathies, as well as other acquired or genetic conditions that cause muscular deterioration, muscle weakness, and nerve damage. He practices both Comprehensive Neurology and Neuromuscular Medicine in Palo Alto and Emeryville.
Dr. Rider earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco and completed residency at Stanford. He also completed fellowship training in Neuromuscular Medicine at UCSF. He has a passion for teaching neurology to students and patients. He was awarded the Fishers and Dunn teaching award for medical student teaching as a resident.
Dr. Rider is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine. -

Kerri E. Rieger, MD, PhD

Clinical Professor, DermatologyBioDr. Rieger is a Clinical Professor of Pathology and Dermatology at Stanford University. She received her M.D., Ph.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed her Dermatology Residency and Dermatopathology Fellowship at Stanford University. She is board certified in Dermatology and Dermatopathology. She evaluates skin specimens in the Pathology department, where her interests include histopathologic findings in cutaneous lymphoma, hospitalized patients, and patients with autoimmune disease. She also sees patients in the Stanford dermatology clinic in Portola Valley, where her clinical interest is adult general dermatology.

Fran Riley
Clinical Assistant Professor, Emergency Medicine
BioDr. Fran Riley is a physician engineer and Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University. She obtained an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and robotics, she obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo where she focused on robotics. Driven by her passion for merging medicine and technology, she pursued a Master's degree in Computer Science at The Johns Hopkins University, where she developed a motor controller for an early prototypes of the Da Vinci robot for ENT surgical applications. Dr. Riley's research also focused on utilizing real-time monitoring data to enhance the treatment of traumatic brain injuries in the pediatric intensive care unit.
Following her work in robotics and computer science, Dr. Riley transitioned to the healthcare industry, where she served as a product manager at Microsoft. In this role, she lead multidisciplinary teams to develop multiple features for an electronic medical record dedicated to data analytics. The product was then acquired by GE Healthcare.
Dr. Riley then pursued a medical degree at the University of Vermont, followed by a residency and chief residency at Maimonides Medical Center. She then completed a fellowship in emergency ultrasound at Columbia University Medical Center.
At Stanford, Dr. Riley is an integral part of the Stanford Emergency Medicine Partnership Program (STEPP), utilizing her technical expertise to identify industry partners for research collaborations and product development. She also actively contributes to a hospital-wide committee dedicated to evaluating the use of informatics for clinical care, prioritizing patient safety and high-quality care.
Dr. Riley's clinical research focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence in image recognition for regional wall motion abnormalities, specifically utilizing point-of-care ultrasound to diagnose acute coronary syndrome. -

Ellen Youngsoo Rim
Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering
BioPlants are increasingly vulnerable to environmental stressors—such as pathogen infection, drought, and heat—from climate change. These challenges threaten global food security and limit the carbon sequestration potential of plants. Our research goal is to sustainably enhance plant productivity and resilience through protein engineering. We engineer proteins involved in plant immune and hormone signaling pathways using directed evolution in high-throughput single cell systems. Directed evolution is a synthetic biology approach that enables rapid development of proteins with novel or improved functions. We combine this approach with machine learning, which allows us to learn from large datasets generated during the directed evolution process. Engineered proteins are then introduced into plants to enhance crop yields and climate resilience.

Jessica Riskin
Frances and Charles Field Professor of History
BioJessica Riskin received her B.A. from Harvard University and her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. She taught at MIT before coming to Stanford, and has also taught at Iowa State University and at Sciences Po, Paris. Her research interests include early modern science, politics and culture and the history of scientific explanation.
Riskin is the author of Science in the Age of Sensibility: The Sentimental Empiricists of the French Enlightenment (2002), which won the American Historical Association's J. Russell Major Prize for best book in English on any aspect of French history, and the editor of Genesis Redux: Essays in the History and Philosophy of Artificial Life (2007) and, with Mario Biagioli, of Nature Engaged: Science in Practice from the Renaissance to the Present (2012). She is also the author of The Restless Clock: A History of the Centuries-Long Debate over What Makes Living Things Tick (2016), which won the 2021 Patrick Suppes Prize in the History of Science from the American Philosophical Society. -

BioDr. Rittenberg is a board-certified, fellowship-trained physiatrist with more than 20 years of experience specializing in rehabilitative and interventional spine care. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
In his clinical practice, Dr. Rittenberg provides expert care for painful spine disorders. He excels at interventional pain management and has extensive experience in a variety of spinal disorders, including sports-related spine injuries
Prior to joining Stanford, he was co-chair of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department for Kaiser Northern California. Additionally, he spent 10 years at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, where he served as Medical Director of Musculoskeletal and Spine Procedures at the Spine and Sports Rehabilitation Center. He was a consultant in the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation Department of Orthopedic Surgery and an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Power density can be improved with better semiconductors and passive componets, and by reducing the energy storage requirements of the system. By dramatically increasing switching frequency it is possible to reduce size of power converters. I'm interested in high performance/frequency circuits switching >10 MHz. -
Lucia Rivera Lara, MD, MPH

BioDr. Rivera Lara is a Clinical Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she is highly regarded for her clinical excellence and dedication to education and research in the field of neurology. She treats patients suffering from strokes, cerebral hemorrhages, and seizures. Dr. Rivera Lara completed her residency in Neurology at the University of Massachusetts and her fellowship in Neurocritical Care at Johns Hopkins University. During her fellowship, she received a Research Award from the American Academy of Neurology/American Brain Foundation.
Dr. Rivera Lara joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in 2014, initially as an Instructor and later as an Assistant Professor, working in the neurocritical care unit and the Neurology inpatient and consult service. She earned her Master’s in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2017, which equipped her with a broader perspective on research and global health.
Today, her research is at the forefront of addressing critical issues in neurology. Dr. Rivera Lara focuses on developing neuromonitoring algorithms aimed at optimizing cerebral blood flow delivery for patients with acute brain injuries, with the goal of preventing cerebral ischemia and subsequent complications. By studying cerebral autoregulation and employing multimodal brain monitoring techniques, she aims to mitigate secondary injuries, ultimately helping to reduce cognitive impairment and decrease disability in these vulnerable patients. Her findings have been published in journals including Critical Care Medicine, Neurocritical Care, Stroke, Seizure, the Journal of Neurosurgery and Anesthesiology, and JAMA, and she has presented at the International Stroke Conference, the Critical Care Conference, and at meetings of the American Academy of Neurology and the Neurocritical Care Society.
Dr. Rivera Lara is a Global Health Faculty Fellow at Stanford University for her work on neurological health disparities in Latin America. She founded "Conferencias de Cuidado Neurocritico," which are bimonthly lectures on Neurocritical Care Emergencies and Stroke Management conducted in Spanish via Zoom, attended by residents, fellows, and intensivists from Latin American countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, and others. -

BioDr. Farhana Rob is a board-certified, fellowship-trained family medicine doctor with Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Primary Care and Population Health at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Rob provides personalized and compassionate primary care for people ranging from newborns to older adults. She specializes in women’s health and maternity care, managing conditions such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and gestational diabetes. Donald Roberts

BioDonald Roberts received his A.B. from Columbia University (1961) and his M.A. from the University of California at Berkeley (1963). He earned his Ph.D. in communication at Stanford in 1968, then became a member of the department faculty, serving as Director of the Institute for Communication Research from 1985-1990 and from 1999-2001. He chaired the department from 1990-1996.
Roberts teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on communication theory and research and on children, youth, and media. His primary area of research concerns how children and adolescents use and respond to media, a topic on which he has written extensively (e.g., chapters in The Handbook of Communication, Learning from Television: Psychological and Education Research, The International Encyclopedia of Communications, The Handbook of Children and the Media,and The Handbook of Adolescent Psychology).
He has also written comprehensive reviews of the literature on the effects of mass communication for the Annual Review of Psychology and for the revised edition of the Handbook of Social Psychology, and co-authored a chapter on public opinion processes in the Handbook of Communication Science.
Roberts helped to design a parental advisory system to label violence, sex/nudity, and language for the computer software industry which has been adapted by the Internet Content Rating Association for use on the World Wide Web. He has spoken on the issue of content labeling and advisories internationally (e.g., Mexico, Korea, Australia, South Africa), and has published several articles dealing with content labeling.
He has consulted with a number of companies involved in producing children’s media (e.g., Filmation, ABC-Disney, MGM Animation, Sunbow Entertainment, Nelvana Ltd., and KidsWB!), and currently functions as Educational Director for DIC Entertainment, helping to develop content to meet the FCC’s requirements for educational programming for children. Roberts also served on the board of advisors of MediaScope, a nonprofit organization founded to promote constructive depictions of social issues in film, television, music, and video games, and was a planner and panelist for Vice President Al Gore’s Conference on Families and Media.

BioDr. Roberts has performed hospital dentistry and surgery at Stanford University Medical Center and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital since 1995. He is also on the faculty at University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He treats a variety of oral and maxillofacial conditions, including dental trauma and infection, dental implant and restorative reconstruction, surgical tooth extraction, bone and tissue grafting, conventional and surgical endodontic procedures, dental oncology care of cancer patients, as well as orofacial pain treatment.
He has presented CME lectures and Grand Rounds to numerous Departments at Stanford, as well as teaching Residents and Fellows at Stanford Medical School and the Palo Alto VA. He also lectures in the Physician Assistant Program at Stanford.
During his nearly a quarter of a century of military service, he was one of the leading researchers on combat trauma and the pathophysiology of projectile wounds. Zachary T. Roberts, MD

BioDr. Zach Roberts is a board-certified neurologist and epileptologist with Stanford Health Care’s Comprehensive Neurology Program. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology & Neurological Sciences. He completed two years of epilepsy fellowship training at New York University Langone Health where he gained extensive experience using neuromodulatory devices and managing epilepsy that is difficult to treat. Prior to this fellowship, he completed his neurology residency at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Roberts specializes in caring for patients with epilepsy. He creates personalized, comprehensive care plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs. He is skilled in the use of neuromodulatory devices for treating epilepsy, including vagal nerve stimulation (VNS), responsive neurostimulation (RNS), and deep brain stimulation (DBS). His additional clinical interests include the interpretation of electroencephalography (EEG) studies as well as the treatment of sleep disorders.
Dr. Roberts has had a passion for medical education throughout his training as a doctor. He has taught and created content related to neurology and epilepsy for medical students, residents, fellows, and patients. He has designed a simulation-based learning module for the treatment of prolonged seizures and lectured on neurology for a physician assistant program in Pennsylvania. He is dedicated to advancing the knowledge of both his peers and patients.
His research interests include quality improvement as well as using technology to aid health care delivery—both in treating epilepsy and in the field of neurology. Dr. Roberts’ work has been featured on posters presented at national and international conferences. He has also published a peer-reviewed journal article on doctors’ experiences with teleneurology in Telemedicine and e-Health.
Dr. Roberts is an active member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Medical Association, and the American Epilepsy Society. -
Lesley Robertson

BioAfter celebrating 34 years with the internationally celebrated St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ), Lesley Robertson (viola) continues to make her life at Stanford University where along with her St Lawrence colleagues she directs the chamber music at the Department of Music. Ms. Robertson teaches viola, coaches chamber music, and also spearheads the Emerging String Quartet Program at Stanford and the annual St Lawrence Chamber Music Seminar. A graduate of the Curtis Institute and the Juilliard School, Ms. Robertson also holds a degree from the University of British Columbia where she studied with her mentor, Gerald Stanick. A founding member of the SLSQ, Ms. Robertson toured regularly with the ensemble, performing 100+ concerts worldwide per season (in Berlin, Florence, London, Paris, New York, Toronto, among others) while also nurturing close ties to the Stanford community performing in various classes, dormitories, laboratories, hospitals, and in Stanford's glorious Bing Concert Hall. She participated in the Marlboro Festival for several years and and toured with Musicians from Marlboro before co-founding the SLSQ. She has served on the jury of several international competitions including the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition and the Concours de Genève. Summer music festivals include Spoleto Festival USA, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Banff Festival, Festival of the Sound, Santa Fe Chamber Music, Rockport Chamber Music Festival, Bravo Vail, Music@Menlo and more. Robertson plays on a viola (1992) made by fellow Canadian John Newton and a bow (2016) by Francois Malo.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAileen K. Robinson is a historian of performance and technology with specializations in 18th and 19th century British theatre and Black cultural performances. Working across the history of science, technology, and theatre, Robinson explores how systems of knowledge, connected to the body and the object, overlapped to produce practices of research, dissemination, and valuation.
Robinson's current book manuscript explores intersections between technological, scientific, and theatrical knowledge in early nineteenth-century science museums. She investigates how theatrical performances and magic shows drew upon technological innovations and formed unique methods for disseminating scientific knowledge. She teaches across the history of science and performance, magic and technology, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century stagecraft, and 19th and 20th-century Black artistic production. -

Thomas Robinson

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Robinson originated the solution-oriented research paradigm and directs the Stanford Solutions Science Lab. Stephen Rock

BioProfessor Rock's research interests include the application of advanced control and modeling techniques for robotic and vehicle systems (aerospace and underwater). He directs the Aerospace Robotics Laboratory in which students are involved in experimental programs designed to extend the state-of-the-art in robotic control. Areas of emphasis include planning and navigation techniques (GPS and vision-based) for autonomous vehicles; aerodynamic modeling and control for aggressive flight systems; underwater remotely-operated vehicle control; precision end-point control of manipulators in the presence of flexibility and uncertainty; and cooperative control of multiple manipulators and multiple robots. Professor Rock teaches several courses in dynamics and control.

BioDr. Rodbumrung completed his undergraduate degree at The University of Texas at Austin and MD at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. After completing medical school he went on to train at Stanford University Hospital, completing internship and residency in Anesthesiology where he continues to practice today as faculty. As a clinical educator, Dr. Rodbumrung is deeply committed to teaching and patient care. His clinical areas of focus include the adult Multi-Specialty Division and Head and Neck Anesthesia often caring for patients with complex head and neck pathologies utilizing the latest techniques in airway management. He also serves as the Surgery Anesthesia Rotation Director, working with surgery interns and residents learning anesthesia and airway management during their training.

Jonathan Rodden
Professor of Political Science, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research
BioJonathan Rodden is a professor in the political science department at Stanford who works on the comparative political economy of institutions. He has written several articles and three books on federalism and fiscal decentralization. One of those books, "Hamilton’s Paradox: The Promise and Peril of Fiscal Federalism," was the recipient of the Gregory Luebbert Prize for the best book in comparative politics in 2007. He works with institutions including the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, USAID, and the European Parliament on issues related to fiscal decentralization and federalism.
He has also written papers on the geographic distribution of political preferences within countries, legislative bargaining, the distribution of budgetary transfers across regions, and the historical origins of political institutions. He has written a series of papers applying tools from mathematics and computer science to questions about redistricting, culminating in a 2019 book called "Why Cities Lose: The Deep Roots of the Urban-Rural Political Divide" (Basic Books). Rodden has also embarked on an inter-disciplinary collaborative project focused on handgun acquisition.
Rodden received his PhD from Yale University and his BA from the University of Michigan, and was a Fulbright student at the University of Leipzig, Germany. Before joining the Stanford faculty in 2007, he was the Ford Associate Professor of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Jesse Rodin
Osgood Hooker Professor of Fine Arts
BioJesse Rodin strives to make contact with lived musical experiences of the distant past. Immersing himself in original sources, he sings from choirbooks, memorizes melodies and their texts, and recreates performances held at weddings, liturgical ceremonies, and feasts. A passionate teacher, Rodin has led seminars, workshops, and masterclasses at institutions such as Princeton University, the Schola Cantorum (Basel, Switzerland), the University of Vienna, and the Centre d’Études Supérieures de la Renaissance (Tours, France).
Rodin’s recent monograph "The Art of Counterpoint from Du Fay to Josquin" (Cambridge University Press, 2024) presents a theory of how fifteenth-century polyphonic music happens in time. Other published works include a volume in honor of Joshua Rifkin (2024), "The Cambridge History of Fifteenth-Century Music" (2015), a volume for the "New Josquin Edition" (2014), "Josquin’s Rome: Hearing and Composing in the Sistine Chapel" (Oxford University Press, 2012), and articles that bring historiographical, analytical, evidentiary, practical, and embodied perspectives to a range of subjects. An in-progress co-edited book aims to clear the ground and offer a new path forward in Josquin studies.
As director of the vocal ensemble Cut Circle Rodin performs internationally. In partnership with the Belgian label Musique en Wallonie, Cut Circle recently embarked on a project to record the complete music of Josquin des Prez (ca. 1450/51–1521). The first album appeared in 2023; the second, titled "JOSQUIN: II. Motets milanais ; Missa L’ami Baudichon," is forthcoming in fall 2025. Other albums include a disc of anonymous fifteenth-century masses (2021) as well as double albums devoted to the complete songs of Johannes Okeghem (2020), the late masses of Guillaume Du Fay (2016), and music from the Sistine Chapel (2012). A short film titled "Sounds of Renaissance Florence" (2021) recaptures the soundscape of fifteenth-century Italy.
Two projects in the digital humanities strive to make the period as a whole more accessible. Rodin directs the "Josquin Research Project" (josquin.stanford.edu), a digital tool for exploring a large musical corpus. He co-directs "Mapping the Musical Renaissance," which facilitates basic understanding as well as serendipitous discovery.
Rodin is the recipient of awards and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation; the Université Libre de Bruxelles; the American Council of Learned Societies; the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers; the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies; and the American Musicological Society. He has been featured in a variety of public forums, including The New Yorker. He prepares new editions of all the music Cut Circle performs; these are freely available through the Josquin Research Project. For his work with Cut Circle he has received the Prix Olivier Messiaen, the Noah Greenberg Award, Editor’s Choice (Gramophone), and a Diapason d’Or. Cut Circle’s latest album was a finalist for a Gramophone Award.
At Stanford Rodin directs the Facsimile Singers, in which students develop native fluency in old musical notation. He has organized symposia on the composer Johannes Okeghem, medieval music pedagogy, musical analysis in the digital age, and regional Italian cooking. -
Alexander Rodriguez

BioDr. Alex Rodriguez is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Multi-Specialty Division of the Stanford Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating with a double major in Neurobiology and Psychology and earning Honors in the Liberal Arts. He then attended the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he graduated summa cum laude and received multiple accolades, including the prestigious American Medical Association Physicians of Tomorrow Award and induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.
Dr. Rodriguez pursued residency training at Stanford University in the combined Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology program, distinguishing himself as an Outstanding Resident of the Year. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and board-eligible in Anesthesiology, showcasing his dedication to multidisciplinary expertise.
At Stanford, Dr. Rodriguez plays an active role in medical education, serving as an oral board examiner for the Anesthesiology Residency Program and contributing as an author to the Stanford CA1 Tutorial Textbook. His clinical interests include critical care, cardiothoracic anesthesiology, point-of-care ultrasound, advanced airway management, and perioperative medicine. Within the Multi-Specialty Division, he has developed specialized expertise in abdominal and hepatobiliary surgery and is a member of the "High-Risk" team, who cares for patients with severe illness undergoing non-cardiac surgery.

Carolyn Rodriguez

BioDr. Carolyn Rodriguez is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Stanford University School of Medicine and a Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs. As the Director of the Stanford OCD Research Lab and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Dr. Rodriguez leads studies investigating the brain basis of severe mental disorders. Her landmark clinical trials pioneer rapid-acting treatments for illnesses including OCD and related disorders. Her NIH-, foundation-, and donor-funded mechanistic and clinical efficacy studies span targeted glutamatergic and opioid pathway pharmacotherapy, noninvasive brain stimulation, psychotherapy and suicide prevention.
Dr. Rodriguez also serves as Deputy Editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry and Deputy Editor of Neuropsychopharmacology. She serves as a member of several scientific councils for non-profit research and advocacy groups including Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Orchard OCD and the International OCD Foundation. She has won several national awards, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), which recognizes investigators who are pursuing bold and innovative projects, the 2022 Dolores Shockley Mentoring Award from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and the 2025 American Psychiatric Association (APA) Research Mentoring Award.
Carolyn received her B.S. in Computer Science from Harvard University, followed by an M.D. from Harvard Medical School-M.I.T. and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Genetics from Harvard Medical School. -

BioFatima Rodriguez, MD, MPH serves as the Vice Chair of Clinical Research (Department of Medicine), Section Chief of Preventive Cardiology, and Associate Director of the Center for Digital Health at Stanford University. She received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and a Master of Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Rodriguez completed her internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at Stanford.
Dr. Rodriguez specializes in the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease, with clinical expertise in coronary artery disease and inherited lipid disorders. Her research focuses on cardiovascular disease prevention and health promotion, leveraging digital tools to improve guideline-based care, and using AI-enabled approaches for early detection of atherosclerosis. -
Samuel Rodriguez, MD
Clinical Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Sam Rodriguez is a native of New Jersey and practicing Pediatric Anesthesiologist at Stanford Children's Hospital. He is best known for being the husband of the Stanford Cardiologist Dr. Fatima Rodriguez. Sam was a member of the self proclaimed greatest Anesthesia Residency Class in history (MGH 2012). He is a founder and co-director of the Stanford CHARIOT Program which creates and studies innovative approaches to treating pediatric pain and stress through technology. The CHARIOT Program has positively impacted thousands of children around the world and has grown to include emerging technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, and interactive video games. Dr. Rodriguez is also highly involved in medical humanities education at Stanford Medical School and teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels on how studying art can make better physicians.

Patricia Rodriguez Espinosa
Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health
BioDr. Patricia Rodriguez Espinosa, PhD., MPH, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health and also serves as the Associate Director of Research for the Office of Community Engagement at Stanford Medicine. Dr. Rodriguez Espinosa is also the Associate Core Lead for the Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement Core of the Stanford Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. The ultimate goal of her research is to improve the health of diverse populations - including Latinxs, under-resourced communities, and older adults - through transdisciplinary and community-engaged scholarship. Her research aims to develop novel multi-level interventions and health promotion programs to improve health outcomes (e.g., around aging, multiple chronic conditions, cardiovascular disease) and that include multi-sectoral collaborations. Dr. Rodriguez Espinosa's research has also centered around developing the science of Community-Based Participatory Research, citizen/community science, and other participatory research approaches.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur team is fascinated by how cells make growth decisions — to grow or not to grow. In order to grow, cells require nutrients, and we are unraveling how cells use specialized protein sensors and transporters to sense and traffic nutrients in between various compartments. We use approaches from structural biology, chemical biology, biophysics, biochemistry, and cell biology — to reveal the mechanisms of basic biological processes, and we develop chemical probes that modulate them.
