BioDr. Shem is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Section of Dental Medicine and Surgery at Stanford University. He trained in Dental Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, focusing on oral complications of cancer therapy and non-surgical management of patients with osteoradionecrosis (ORN) and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). He also trained in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Columbia University and has expertise in diagnosing and managing oral mucosal diseases.
As a dental oncologist and oral pathologist, he evaluates patients before and after organ and stem-cell transplant, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and bisphosphonate therapy. He has particular interest in oral manifestations of systemic disease, oral complications of systemic therapy, and oral dysplasia. -

BioVered Karti Shemtov teaches Hebrew and comparative literature in the Department of Comparative Literature at Stanford University, where she also serves as Faculty Director of the Center for Jewish Studies. Shemtov is the founder and editor-in-chief of the journal Dibur.
Her publications include Changing Rhythms: Towards a Theory of Prosody in Cultural Context (Bar-Ilan University Press, 2012) and several co-edited volumes, including Spoken Word, Written Word: Rethinking the Representation of Speech in Literature (2015), 1948: History and Responsibility (2013), and Jewish Conceptions and Practices of Space (2005). She is also the author of numerous articles, including “Limbotopia: The ‘New Present’ and the Literary Imagination” (Journal of Comparative Literature, 2018, with Elana Gomel); “A Sense of No Ending: Contemporary Literature and the Refusal to Write the Future” (Dibur Literary Journal, 2018, with Elana Gomel); and “Poetry and Dwelling: From Martin Heidegger to the Songbook of the Tent Revolution in Israel” (Prooftexts). Her scholarship also examines the works of Amos Oz, Yehuda Amichai, Michal Govrin, A. B. Yehoshua, and Zeruya Shalev. She is the author of the entry “Hebrew Poetry: 1781–2010” in the revised edition of The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics.
Her current research project focuses on the poetics of rage and the literary, philosophical, and political forms through which rage is expressed and transformed in poetry and narrative. -

Academic Staff - Hourly - CSL, SurgeryBioDr. Christopher Shen is an Adjunct Professor in the Stanford School of Medicine, the Director of Global Programs at the Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign, and a member of the Stanford Biodesign Leadership Council. Dr. Shen is also the Founding Executive Director of the Singapore Stanford Biodesign Program.
Dr. Shen has been a longstanding member of the Stanford community since 1991, completing degrees in Biological Sciences, Biomechanical Engineering, Business, and Medicine. He has been teaching graduate and undergraduate students since 2001.
A strong proponent of interdisciplinary and experiential education, Dr. Shen has dedicated his career to teaching medical, engineering, and business students at Stanford and abroad in foundational concepts underpinning design-thinking, clinical immersion, ideation, rapid prototyping, innovation, and entrepreneurship. In addition, Dr. Shen is responsible for establishing and/or managing collaborations between Stanford and Biodesign-like programs on every continent except Antarctica! He continues to annually mentor diverse groups of students to develop and implement innovative medical solutions to serve patients around the world.
Dr. Shen is the founding and current U.S. Executive Director of Singapore Stanford Biodesign since its inception in 2010. As the first Biodesign program in East Asia, its mission is to train the next generation of medical technology innovators throughout the Pacific Rim, focusing on the unique medical needs in the region. Supported by Singapore's national level research institute, the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (ASTAR), and the National Research Foundation (NRF), the program has uniquely built bridges across Asia, spanning Singapore, China, Indonesia, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, and Malaysia. In total, the program has trained 60 Fellows and hundreds of students throughout the region.
Dr. Shen is also a Partner at Novo Holdings, the asset manager of the Novo Foundation, one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world. With headquarters in Denmark, Novo Holdings is committed to investing in innovative companies that improve the health of people and planet. Dr. Shen started his career in medical innovation as a Senior Design Engineer at Guidant Neurovascular, where he was the principal inventor of one of the original stentriever devices for ischemic stroke. He has been issued twelve patents in the fields of interventional neuroradiology and interventional cardiology.

BioSteinway Artist Sandra Wright Shen has been described as “a classical pianist of the first order.” With her passion, musicality and inspiration, she aims to move hearts and uplift spirits through music.
Sandra has performed across 16 countries in over 600 concerts. Her appearances include prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Chicago Cultural Center, Monte Carlo Opera House, Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, Frankfurt Cultural Center, the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, Taiwan National Concert Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Hong Kong City Hall, and festivals including the Granada International Music Festival, Recontres Musicales de Chaon in France, Brevard Music Festival, Tanglewood BUTI, Chelsea Music Festival, MasterWorks Festival and Steinway Society Concert Series.
She has been featured as guest artist with orchestras appearances around the world displaying a broad repertoire of 26 concertos. She served as Artist-in-Residence with the Charleston Symphony during the 2017–18 season. As a chamber musician, Sandra has performed with renowned artists including Vesselin Paraschkevov (former concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic), Brinton Smith (Houston Symphony), bassoonist Sergio Azzolini, and toured Asia with cellist Nina Kotova.
Sandra received first prize from several major international piano competitions, including First Prize at the 2012 France International Piano Competition, the 1997 Hilton Head International Piano Competition, the 1996 Mieczysław Munz Piano Competition, and the 1990 Taiwan National Piano Competition.
Her recordings include a debut CD featuring Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, both released by Taiwan’s Rolling Stone Music. Her latest album, Momentum, with cellist Miriam Smith, was released on Azica Records in 2022.
Sandra is a piano lecturer at the Stanford University and the piano chair at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Division. She has served on the faculty of the Brevard Music Festival, Tanglewood BUTI Young Artists Piano Program, Masterworks Music Festival, Music@Tetauchi, and American Fine Arts Festival in Europe and others. Previous academic appointments include Southern Illinois University and frequent invitations as Distinguished Guest Faculty at Furman University. Her students have won top prizes in competitions such as the International Piano Competition of Orléans (France), Stockholm International Piano Competition, the Chopin Foundation, Young Arts and the MTAC competitions.
Sandra performed live for WCQS Radio in Asheville, filmed a four-part television series “The Movements of the Master Composers” for Hong Kong TV and "Inspiration From Above" for US Creation TV, and hosted a classical music program for Taiwan’s IC Broadcast Radio FM97.5. Mixing music and philanthropy, Sandra has given benefit concerts for disaster victims, foster children, firefighters, music education for underprivileged children and San Jose Chamber Series.
Born in Taiwan, Sandra earned her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music, where she studied with legendary pianist Ann Schein. Her teachers also include Zalina Gurevich and Jörg Demus.

Zhi-Xun Shen

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Shen's main research interest lies in the area of condensed matter and materials physics, as well as the applications of materials and devices. He develops photon based innovative instrumentation and advanced experimental techniques, ranging from angle-resolved photoemission to microwave imaging, soft x-ray scattering and time domain spectroscopy and scattering. He has created a body of literature that advanced our understanding of quantum materials, including superconductors, semiconductors, novel magnets, topological insulators, novel carbon and electron emitters. He is best known for his discoveries of the momentum structure of anisotropic d-wave pairing gap and anomalous normal state pseudogap in high temperature superconductors. He has further leveraged the advanced characterization tool to make better materials through thin film and interface engineering.

Sheri D. Sheppard

BioSheri Sheppard teaches both undergraduate and graduate design-related classes, and conducts research on fracture mechanics and applied finite element analysis, and on how people become engineers. From 1999-2008 she served as a Senior Scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, leading the Foundation’s engineering study. In addition to publishing technical papers, reports, and textbooks, she has led or co-led several large, multi-institutional projects to build new educational research programs and related resources, such as the Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education (CAEE), The National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation (Epicenter), and a program on summer research experiences for high school teachers. Her industry experience includes engineering positions at Detroit's "Big Three” — Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation, and Chrysler Corporation. She earned her bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin, and her PhD at the University of Michigan. At Stanford she has served a chair of the faculty senate, as associate vice provost for graduate education, and is the longtime faculty founder of and adviser to the graduate student group MEwomen. Her work has been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including the Walter J. Gores Award, Stanford University's highest award for excellence in teaching and the Chester F. Carlson and Ralph Coats Roe Awards of the American Society for Engineering Education in recognition of distinguished accomplishment in engineering education, and for outstanding teaching and notable contributions to the mechanical engineering profession.

In particular, she specializes in mental health of patients with cystic fibrosis as well as lung and heart transplant patients. She consults on patients hospitalized on medical and surgical units as well as sees patients in outpatient clinics. She serves as the Director of Psychiatric and Psychological Services for the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic and Chief of Psychosomatic Medicine Clinic. Seth Lawrence Sherman, MD
Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research focuses on ways to augment tissue healing, improve human performance, and prevent musculoskeletal injuries. Approaching these challenges through parallel basic science and clinical pathways, our team works from the “bedside to the bench and back to the bedside”, identifying areas of clinical need to deliver evidence-based solutions for patients.
We collaborates with orthopaedic surgeons, non-surgical physicians, and researchers within bioengineering, human performance, and musculoskeletal imaging across the Stanford campus. The team is developing novel methods to accurately record human movement (including wearable technology, phone-based systems), rapid MRI imaging protocols, and exploring the use of biomarkers to track injury and recovery. This research builds on my earlier work, which utilized portable, inexpensive software for Microsoft Kinect to detect knee injury risk in youth athletes performing a drop vertical jump test. The team’s multifaceted goal is: 1) develop innovative methods to screen for injury risk (i.e. youth athlete non-contact ACL), 2) create targeted intervention programs to reduce risk, 3) enhance athletic performance; and 4) improve accuracy of return to play testing following injury/surgery (i.e. clinical evaluation, biomarkers, functional tests, imaging analysis for healing).
In the laboratory,our team investigates cellular and molecular deficiencies in tissue types including tendon, ligament, articular cartilage, and meniscus. By understanding aberrant pathways leading to tissue injury, they can identify innovative therapeutic targets for intervention. In collaboration with the Genetic Engineering and Synthetic Biology laboratories, Dr. Sherman’s research has explored the role of orthobiologic agents such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) for tissue healing in patella tendinopathy (the breakdown of collagen in a tendon). Our lab is also investigating the use of CBD for musculoskeletal applications as an alternative to commonly used local anesthetics and cortisone derivatives. In my earlier work, we researched the cellular toxicity of such applications.
In addition to basic science research, I have helped to build a Sports Medicine clinical research team that includes several full-time clinical research coordinators, residents, fellows, and students. The team collects prospective outcomes on their patients using a novel data collection platform called Patient IQ. The group is part of the JUPITER study which is the largest, multicenter study ever assembled in patellofemoral instability. They are additionally planning to enroll in FDA-approved clinical studies investigating pioneering strategies for knee cartilage restoration, joint preservation, and orthobiologic injections for osteoarthritis. Recent clinical publications explore outcomes in meniscus preservation and transplantation, medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, osteochondral allograft and matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI), and surgical augmentation using PRP/BMAC. The clinical research team actively reports results of non-surgical and surgical interventions to continue to introduce new knowledge to the field, with the goal of improved patient outcome. -

BioStephanie Sherriff is an interdisciplinary artist, composer, and performer currently based in San Francisco, California. Their work with sound, video, and physical phenomena is ephemeral in nature and culminates as time-based installations and performances that deconstruct fragments of daily life through experimental processes. They received a BA from San Francisco State University in 2014 and an MFA in Art Practice from Stanford University in 2019. Their work has been featured both nationally and internationally at creative centers such as the Institute for Research Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM), the Sfendoni Theater, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), O. Festival, Gray Area, The Lab, Artists Television Access (ATA), and the Center for New Music (C4NM).

BioI joined Stanford's Earth System Science department as an assistant professor 2018. Prior to this, I was a a Junior Fellow of the Simons Foundation in New York, and a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University’s Department of Applied Physics and Applied Math and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. I got my Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science at MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, in the Program for Atmospheres, Oceans, and Climate, where I worked with R. Alan Plumb. I’m broadly interested in atmosphere and ocean dynamics, climate variability, and general circulation.
I'm particularly interested in fundamental questions in atmospheric dynamics, which I address using a combination of theory, observations, and both idealized and comprehensive numerical experiments. Current areas of focus include the dynamics, variability, and change of the mid-latitude jets and storm tracks, the stratospheric polar vortex, and atmospheric gravity waves. -

Michael Shewmaker

BioMichael Shewmaker is the author of Leviathan (2023) and Penumbra (2017), winner of the Hollis Summers Poetry Prize. Born in Texarkana, Texas, he is the recipient of fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, and Stanford University, where he was a Wallace Stegner Fellow. His recent poems appear in Best American Poetry, The Believer, Harvard Review, Oxford American, Ploughshares, Southern Review, and elsewhere. BioDr. Vivian Shih received her Bachelor of Science with honors and Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Miami. In 2002, she completed her postgraduate medical training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (Shirley Ryan Ability Lab). She is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R or Physiatry) and specializes in non-surgical management of musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis, gait and balance disorders. She also performs electrodiagnostic testing (EMG/NCS), ultrasound guided joint/soft tissue injections, and platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections. Dr. Shih previously practiced in the New Haven area from 2005 to 2018. She was an Attending Physician at Yale-New Haven Hospital and on faculty at the Yale School of Medicine. Prior to that, she had been practicing at Northwestern University Medical Center and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. She has published in the Arthritis and Rheumatism journal, Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) online review, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation journal, and Koopman's Arthritis and Allied Health textbook. She is a member of the AAPM&R, Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP), and the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM).

BioOry Shihor is an internationally acclaimed pianist and educator, serving on the piano faculty at Stanford University as Lecturer in Piano. His students have won major international competitions—including the Walter W. Naumburg International Piano Competition, Montreal International Piano Competition, Hilton Head International Piano Competition, and the Bösendorfer and Yamaha USASU International Piano Competition—and have gained admission to leading conservatories and universities such as Juilliard, Yale, and Curtis.
A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School, Mr. Shihor has been a frequent guest lecturer and master class teacher at major institutions worldwide, including the Beijing and Shanghai Conservatories, Seoul National University, National Taiwan Normal University, Northwestern University, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Boston Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, and the Royal Northern College of Music.
Prior to joining Stanford, he served for over a decade as Professor of Piano Performance at the Colburn Conservatory, where he was also the founding dean of the Colburn Music Academy, a highly selective pre-college program for gifted young musicians. He is the co-founder of the Ory Shihor Institute, where he continues to teach advanced pianists and mentor the next generation of piano educators.
Mr. Shihor is a prizewinner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the Washington International Piano Competition, the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, and the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition. He is a Bösendorfer and Yamaha artist. -
Partha Pratim Shil

BioI am an historian of modern South Asia, specializing in nineteenth and early twentieth century eastern India, with a developing research interest in the late eighteenth century. My work is located at the intersection of the fields of histories of state formation and labour history. I am particularly interested in the histories of government workers and how this labour history intrinsic to the state apparatus recasts our understanding of state formation.
I am currently working on the manuscript of my first book, provisionally entitled 'Sovereign Labour: Constables and Watchmen in the Making of the Modern State in India, c. 1860-1950'. This monograph is a study of police constables and village watchmen in Bengal from the promulgation of the Police Act in 1861 until the upheavals of decolonisation in the mid-twentieth century. It reframes the history of constables and village watchmen, usually represented as government functionaries, as the history of a distinctive form of labour.
The most important methodological innovation of this study is to bring methods from the historiography of labour in South Asia in conversation with the vast archive of the colonial police and to demonstrate how we can rewrite police history as labour history. Sovereign Labour charts the contours of the market of security labour in eastern India and locates the emergence of colonial police workforces within the rhythms of this labour market. It reveals the patterns in the history of constabulary recruitment; examines the implications of the conditions of police work for the nature of police power; delineates the internal segmentation within the world of police labour, and the defining role of caste in shaping modern policing apparatuses in colonial India; and brings out fresh evidence about the myriad modes of politics devised by police workers in this region. More broadly, my aim is to clear a conceptual ground for the study of forms of labour within the apparatuses of the modern state as well as demonstrate how the history of the labouring lives of government workers can provide a fresh entry point into the nature of the modern state in South Asia.

BioHiroyuki Shimada, MD, PhD, FRCPA (Hon), is Professor of Pathology and of Pediatrics at the Stanford University Medical Center. He was born in Tokyo, Japan, and completed MD (1973) and PhD (1982) at the Yokohama City University School of Medicine, Yokohama, Japan, and also completed his pathology training at the Children's Hospital (now the Nationwide Children’s Hospital) and the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA (1988). Before moving to the Stanford University in 2019, he was Professor of Pathology (Clinical Scholar) at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and working at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Dr. Shimada was Chair of the International Neuroblastoma Pathology Committee (1999-2017) and the founder of the International Neuroblastoma Pathology Classification (INPC). As Director of the COG (Children’s Oncology Group) Neuroblastoma Pathology Reference Laboratory (since 2001), he has been actively reviewing pathology samples of ~700 neuroblastoma cases per year from United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Pathology review results according to the INPC have been providing critical information for patient stratification and protocol assignment in the COG international neuroblastoma clinical trials. -

CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS
The Clinical Effectiveness (CE) Program is a funded program that aims to understand and improve unnecessary variation in healthcare delivery in order to optimize quality of care and reduce wasteful expenditures. The CE program has developed innovative programs such as Target Based Care, an award-winning intervention to reduce variation in hospital length of stay and currently a multi-center trial involving more than 20 hospitals in North America. In 2016, the CE program included the first CE fellowship program in a pediatric training program with 3 cycles of graduates. The CE program is supported by LPCH and a philanthropic gift by Susan Choe and Thomas Tobiason. -
Chungheon Shin
Research Engineer
BioChungheon Shin is the Research Director of the Codiga Resource Recovery Center at Stanford University. His work focuses on advancing sustainability through resource recovery from waste streams, with the goal of enabling engineering solutions that recover valuable resources while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. He has developed and optimized innovative treatment processes that integrate biological and physicochemical systems across multiple scales, ranging from reaction kinetics to systems-level analysis, supported by both conventional and data-driven computational models.
He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Inha University in South Korea, where he developed the Staged Anaerobic Fluidized-bed Membrane Bioreactor (SAF-MBR) for the recovery of clean water and energy from municipal wastewater, working with Professor Jaehoe Bae and Professor Perry L. McCarty. He subsequently served as a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University under the supervision of Professor Craig S. Criddle. -

BioEugene Shkolyar, MD is a urologic oncologist who specializes in treating patients with bladder, prostate, kidney, and testis cancers. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Urology at the Stanford School of Medicine.
Dr. Shkolyar has expertise in open, endoscopic, and robotic surgery and in caring for patients with complex urologic oncology needs. Dr. Shkolyar is actively engaged in translational research, with a particular interest in integrating artificial intelligence into bladder cancer treatment and the development of novel biomarkers for cancer detection. His commitment to continual innovation ensures that his patients have access to the latest and most effective treatment options.
Dr. Shkolyar was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and raised in New York. He attended Cornell University for his undergraduate education and went on to UCLA for medical school. Following medical school, Dr. Shkolyar completed a residency in urology at Stanford, where he developed his interest in urologic oncology, translational bladder cancer research and teaching. He went on to complete a two-year fellowship in urologic oncology at Stanford School of Medicine gaining additional skills in management of complex urologic cancers. Dr. Shkolyar is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society and a research scholar award from the Urology Care Foundation. In addition, he has authored and co-authored numerous publications in urology, artificial intelligence, and device development.

BioYoav Shoham is professor emeritus of computer science at Stanford University. A leading AI expert, Prof. Shoham is Fellow of AAAI, ACM and the Game Theory Society. Among his awards are the IJCAI Research Excellence Award, the AAAI/ACM Allen Newell Award, and the ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award. His online Game Theory course has been watched by close to a million people. BioDr. Shomali is a clinical assistant professor of Hematology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is board certified in hematology & medical oncology.
Dr. Shomali specializes in the treatment of blood cancers such as myeloproliferative neoplasms and myelodysplastic syndromes. He aims to provide compassionate, personalized, and evidence-based care to each patient.
Dr. Shomali received his medical degree from the University of Jordan, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center where he studied infections in cancer patients and the role of biomarkers in defining tumor fever. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he served as a Chief Medical Resident. He then joined Stanford University for his combined Hematology & Oncology fellowship training.
Dr. Shomali’s research interests include the study of novel agents in myeloproliferative neoplasms and myelodysplastic syndromes. He developed investigator-initiated clinical trials for patients with eosinophilic neoplasms and advanced myelofibrosis. In addition, he co-authored several papers and book chapters discussing the care of patients with cancer. His work has been presented in national meetings and published in peer reviewed journals including Blood, American Journal of Hematology, British Journal of Hematology, Leukemia & Lymphoma, and Cancer.
Among his honors, Dr. Shomali received the Cleveland Clinic Excellence in Teaching Award and was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He has received a Young Investigator Award from the Conquer Cancer Foundation, an NIH Institutional National Research Service Award, and a Stanford Cancer Institute Fellowship Award.

BioJohn B. Shoven is the Trione Director of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and the Charles R. Schwab Professor of Economics at Stanford. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He specializes in public finance and corporate finance and has published on Social Security, health economics, corporate and personal taxation, mutual funds, pension plans, economic demography and applied general equilibrium economics. His books include The Real Deal: The History and Future of Social Security, Yale University Press, 1999 and The Evolving Pension System, Brookings Institution Press, 2005. His most recent book is co-authored with former Secretary of State and Treasury George Shultz and deals with both Social Security and health care reform in the U.S. (Putting Our House in Order: A Guide to Social Security and Health Care Reform, WWNorton, 2008). He also recently published a research paper on new ways of measuring age (“New Age Thinking: Alternative Ways of Measuring Age, Their Relationship to Labor Force Participation, Government Policies and GDP,” NBER Working Paper No. 13476. October 2007). His journal publications appear in such places as the American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Perspectives, and the Journal of Public Economics. In total, he has published more than one hundred professional articles and twenty books.
Professor Shoven is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a recipient of the Paul A. Samuelson Award for Outstanding Scholarly Writing on Lifelong Financial Security, and an award winning teacher at Stanford. He received his Ph.D in Economics from Yale University in 1973 and has been associated with Stanford ever since. He was Dean of Humanities and Sciences from 1993 to 1998. Joseph Shrager

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsIn clinical research, Dr. Shrager studies outcomes in a variety of areas within Thoracic Surgery including: parenchyma-sparing operations and minimally invasive resections for lung cancer, transcervical thymectomy for myasthenia gravis, diaphragm plication, and surgical treatment of emphysema.
Dr. Shrager's lab is focused on the impact of disease states upon the diaphragm. His group published the seminal paper (NEJM) describing diaphragm atrophy assoc'd with mechanical ventilation. -
Aimee D. Shu

BioI am an endocrinologist with particular interests in reproductive and bone health.
I enjoy treating patients with menstrual disorders, menopause, fractures, osteoporosis, parathyroid imbalance, and calcium imbalance.
As a certified menopause practitioner (North American Menopause Society), I help women fine-tune their health at the mid-life transition. Some women transition through menopause with ease, while others experience challenging symptoms like hot flashes, slowed metabolism, and mood changes. This transition period provides a good opportunity to create a "game plan" for preserving future health. It also marks the beginning of natural bone loss, leaving one more susceptible to fragility fractures.
I provide individualized treatment plans for bone health to men and women of all ages, including for those with specific challenges such as chronic steroid use. As a certified clinical densitometrist (International Society for Clinical Densitometry), I personally review all my patients' bone density scan images. Thus, please bring any non-Stanford bone density scan images to your appointment with me.

Yasuhiro Shudo, MD, PhD

Ann Shue, MD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she specializes in glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, and adult strabismus, a unique combination of subspecializations practiced by few surgeons worldwide. She is a board-certified ophthalmologist who completed fellowships in glaucoma at Yale University and pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at Duke University. She practices at the Stanford Byers Eye Institute and the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.
Dr. Shue loves seeing patients of all ages with eye problems big or small, including glaucoma due to any reason, glaucoma suspicion, family history of glaucoma, cataracts, strabismus (eye misalignment) or double vision from any cause, including after eye surgeries. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh and an internal medicine internship at UCSF Fresno. She holds a medical degree from University of California, Irvine and an undergraduate degree in biology from Yale University.

Takudzwa Shumba

BioDr. Takudzwa Shumba is a family medicine clinician-educator with particular interests in global health equity, preventative medicine, women's health, pediatrics and integrative medicine. She was born and raised in Zimbabwe. Prior to beginning medical school at Stanford, she completed a Master's in Public Health at Yale, with a focus in global health. She has been involved in public health projects in Zimbabwe, Hong Kong and mainland China and Kenya. She completed her residency at Stanford Health Care - O'Connor Hospital Family Medicine in San Jose, prior to joining faculty at Stanford Family Medicine. LGBTQQI friendly. After several years as a continuity primary care provider at Stanford Family Medicine, she transitioned to providing quality same day access for acute patient needs.
She is currently Co-director of the Leadership Education in Advancing Diversity (LEAD) program, Associate Director of the Clinical Summer Internship (CSI), and was Course Director of the undergraduate seminar “Decolonizing Global Health,” and Co-Director of the "Social and Environmental Determinants of Health" elective. Margaret Shyu

BioMargaret Shyu is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine within the Stanford School of Medicine. She is a Bay Area local and completed her undergraduate degrees in Molecular & Cell Biology and Economics at UC Berkeley. She then went on to receive her MD from Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and complete her residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC where she was part of the Healthcare Leadership Track. She helped created the Career Hospitalist Advisement and Mentorship Program (CHAMP) at Mount Sinai, a longitudinal program to mentor internal medicine residents interested in hospital medicine, after seeing a need for it after applying for jobs on her own. CHAMP went on to win the SHM Converge Scientific Abstract Competition (2024) and be featured in The Hospitalist (2025).
After working in NYC during the COVID-19 pandemic, she realized her interest in helping medically complex patients make difficult decisions and has found fulfillment in her work at Stanford caring for patients who have cancer. Some of her passions include clinical research, particularly that relating to workforce and operations, cost of care, and topics crossing multiple subspecialties. -
Anjali Sibley MD, MPH
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Oncology
BioDr. Sibley is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine (Oncology) at Stanford School of Medicine. She is the Director of the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center in Emeryville and is a board-certified, fellowship-trained hematologist and medical oncologist.
Her clinical interests include treating solid tumor cancers, lung cancers, blood cancers and benign blood conditions. She is interested in cancer prevention and reducing disparities in hematologic/oncologic care among underserved populations, and successful cancer survivorship programs.
In addition to responsibilities related to patient care and overseeing the Cancer Center in Emeryville, Dr. Sibley has developed and is leading an innovative cancer survivorship clinic, including an exercise initiative. She also is passionate about advancing clinical trial enrollment for medically underserved populations and she serves on the Cancer Network’s East Bay Health Equity Committee leading lung cancer screening efforts in the East Bay. She is also working on a Stanford Cancer Institute-funded study examining psychosocial factors and cardiac health in Black cancer patients in the East Bay.
She believes that providing patient care is a true privilege. Dr. Sibley utilizes a patient-centered practice approach that addresses multiple aspects of a patient’s well-being. Her research interests have included chemoprevention of breast cancer and the development of magnetic resonance imaging technology in breast cancer detection and mapping. She has also led community-based efforts to implement low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) as a screening tool for cancer.
Dr. Sibley’s publications include articles on breast cancer prevention, breast magnetic resonance imaging, and other topics. Her work has appeared in American Journal of Hematology, JAMA, the Breast Journal, Internal Medicine News, and elsewhere. Dr. Sibley was invited to deliver a peer-reviewed presentation on community-based cancer screening and preventive education to the Global Health Council. Dr. Sibley is on the board of directors of the Cancer Support Community SF Bay Area. She has also served as a clinic physician for the Native American Health Center of Oakland, on the Committee on Health Equity of the American Public Health Association, and as chair and vice chair of the Cancer Forum Caucus of the American Public Health Association. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Preventive Oncology, and American Society of Hematology. She has provided volunteer services to the Global Health Council and to the Cancer Patients Aid Association, for whom she conducted a patient screening and education program in Mumbai, India. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMolecular Regulation of Intestinal Development and Maturation. We study transcriptional mechanisms regulating the spatial and temporal restriction of intestine-specific gene expression during gut development. Our approach is to characterize the function of gene-specific DNA cis elements and interacting nuclear proteins in cell culture and in transgenic animals. The goal is to relate the gene-specific control mechanisms to the broader pathways specifying acquisition of gut phenotypes.

Surbhi Sidana, MD

BioDr. Surbhi Sidana is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and specializes in the treatment of multiple myeloma and related disorders. She leads the Myeloma CAR-T/Immunotherapy program at Stanford.
Dr Sidana grew up in Delhi, India. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, followed by Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Following this, she completed an Advanced Hematology Fellowship in Myeloma, Amyloidosis and Related Disorders at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN before joining Stanford University as a faculty member in 2019, where she has led the development of the myeloma CAR-T and bispecific antibody program.
Dr Sidana has an active, broad research portfolio that includes clinical trials of novel therapies in myeloma and related disorders, translational research, epidemiologic and patient reported outcome studies. She has a special focus on research with immunotherapies such as CAR-T cell therapy and bispecific antibodies. She has published over 100 research manuscripts. Dr Sidana is the Leader of the Myeloma Disease Focused Group and the Associate Director for Clinical Research in the BMT and Cell Therapy Division at Stanford University. She also co-leads a multi-institutional collaboration on real world outcomes with immunotherapies in myeloma.
Dr Sidana is actively involved in and holds leadership positions in national and international professional societies. She is the Chair of the American Society of Hematology Committee on Communications, and Co-Chairs the Quality-of-Life Committee of the International Myeloma Working Group. She is a member of the SWOG Myeloma Committee and BMT CTN Myeloma Intergroup, where she works with colleagues across the nation to develop innovative and practice changing trials focused on multiple myeloma . -
Pradeep Kumar Siddappa, MD

BioDr. Pradeep Kumar Siddappa is a board-certified, fellowship-trained gastroenterologist with Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Siddappa specializes in advanced endoscopy procedures to diagnose and treat gastrointestinal conditions. He focuses on pancreatic care, including acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cysts, and pancreatic cancer. He uses advanced, minimally invasive methods to help detect pancreatic cancer early and treat people who cannot undergo surgery.
Dr. Siddappa has studied many gastrointestinal conditions over the years, garnering grant funding and several awards. His primary research examines pancreatic cancer and how to catch it earlier through biomarkers in the pancreatic cyst fluid. He also investigates ways to improve endoscopic and duodenoscopic technology. He has developed new endoscopic techniques for diagnosis and treatment, including endoscopic ultrasound-guided omental fine needle aspiration.
Dr. Siddappa has published his findings in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer, Clinical Endoscopy, JGH Open, and the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He has also shared his research and presented it at conferences around the world, including at the annual Digestive Diseases Week. He has covered topics including new diagnostic markers in pancreatic cyst fluid, narrow band imaging, hepatocellular carcinoma, and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

Douglas Sidell, MD, FAAP, FACS

He received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees with honors from the California Institute of Technology in 2010, 2011, and 2017 respectively. He was a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley’s Wireless Research Center from 2013 to 2014. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the departments of Electrical Engineering and Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Caltech from January 2017 to August 2018.
He was the recipient of an ONR YIP award in 2023, an NSF CAREER award in 2021, an AFOSR YIP award in 2020, an AFOSR DURIP award in 2021, the Caltech Leadership Award in 2017, and an NSF graduate research fellowship in 2010. His research is highly interdisciplinary and bridges the fields of bioengineering, medicine, applied mathematics and computation with electrical engineering and physics.
His research interests include analog/RF integrated circuits, photonic integrated circuits, and computational electromagnetics for biomedical and biosensing applications and wireless communications. His current interests in biomedical devices include portable Point-of-Care in-vitro biosensors, wearable devices for real-time monitoring and analysis of biological signals, ingestible “smart” pills, and implantable devices. His current interests in computational electromagnetics include developing fast algorithms for simulating RF and nanophotonic devices and coupling them with efficient optimization algorithms to achieve the automated design of new, high-performance electromagnetic devices. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe have a highly collaborative research program in the evolutionary genomics of cancer. We apply well-established principles of phylogenetics to cancer evolution on the basis of whole genome sequencing and functional genomics data of multiple tumor samples from the same patient. Introductions to our work and the concepts we apply are best found in the Newburger et al paper in Genome Research and the Sidow and Spies review in TIGS.
