Julia Rachel Plank

BioI am a postdoctoral researcher in the BRain Imaging, Development, and GEnetics (BRIDGE) Laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Currently my work focuses on the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for improving understanding of the neuropathophysiology underlying neuropsychiatric disorders with a genetic basis.
My PhD investigated the use of neuroimaging techniques (diffusion MRI, quantitative magnetization transfer, magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging, electroencephalography) for detection of neuroinflammation in human participants.
My research interests are centered on the clinical applications of MRI for elucidation of pathology and improving diagnosis and treatment. -

BioThomas G. Plante, Ph.D., ABPP is an emeritus adjunct professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is also the Augustin Cardinal Bea, S.J. University Professor, professor of psychology and, by courtesy, religious studies and The Jesuit School of Theology at the Graduate Theological Union, and directs the Applied Spirituality Institute at Santa Clara University. He has served as vice-chair of the National Review Board for the Protection of Children and Youth for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and is past-president of the Society for the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality (Division 36) of the American Psychological Association (APA). He has published 29 books including, Spiritually Informed Therapy: Wisdom and Evidence Based Strategies That Work, Contemporary Clinical Psychology, Graduating with Honor: Best Practices to Promote Ethics Development in College Students, Living Ethically in an Unethical World, Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church: A Decade of Crisis, 2002-2012, and Spiritual Practices in Psychotherapy: Thirteen Tools for Enhancing Psychological Health. He is editor of the APA journal, Spirituality in Clinical Practice. He has published over 275 scholarly professional journal articles and book chapters as well. He has been frequently featured in most major national and international media outlets. Time Magazine featured him in a 2005 profile and referred to him in a 2002 cover story about clerical abuse as one of “three leading American Catholics.” He teaches courses in psychopathology, health psychology, the psychology of religion and spirituality, and professional ethics and maintains a private clinical practice as a licensed psychologist in Menlo Park, CA. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Pleiner lab combines mechanistic cell biology, structural biochemistry and protein engineering to dissect the pathways and molecular machines that mature human membrane proteins to a fully functional state. We also develop alpaca-derived and synthetic nanobodies as tools to modulate intracellular pathways that globally regulate protein homeostasis in health and disease.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research program focuses on computational modeling of cancer biology and cancer outcomes. My laboratory develops stochastic models of the natural history of cancer based on clinical research data. We estimate population-level outcomes under differing screening and treatment interventions. We also analyze genomic and proteomic cancer data in order to identify molecular networks that are perturbed in cancer initiation and progression and relate these perturbations to patient outcomes.

Clinical Assistant Professor (By courtesy), PediatricsBioDr. Celeste Poe is a licensed clinical psychologist with a certification in perinatal mental health. She completed her residency and fellowship training at the Yale Child Study Center. She received her Ph.D. from Palo Alto University, her master’s degree from Pepperdine University and she is a proud HBCU alumni of Xavier University of Louisiana where she received her bachelor’s degree.
Dr. Poe is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Attending NICU and Perinatal Psychologist at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is the program director of the maternal & infant critical care mental health services at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital where she provides psychological consultation and psychotherapy to parents requiring hospitalization due to high risk pregnancies and parents of infants hospitalized in the NICU. Dr. Poe’s clinical specialties include perinatal and infant mental health as well as maternal-infant critical care with a focus on child and caregiver trauma, grief, and bereavement. Her research focuses on Black perinatal mental health and mental health equity, infant and parent mental health in medical settings, and intergenerational trauma. Dr. Poe was a Zero to Three Fellow and currently serves as Co-Chair of the National Network of NICU Psychologists. In 2026 she was appointed to the American Psychological Association's committee on Children Youth and families.
Dr. Poe also holds a community faculty appointment as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Yale Child Study Center where she works on the Grief-Sensitive Healthcare Project which aims to enhance healthcare providers’ capacities to meet the needs of grieving families. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe foundation of the laboratory is computational science aimed at identifying biomedical phenotypes improving the mechanistic understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. The biomedical phenotypes are discovered by unbiased, machine learning-based searches across biological, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological data. This data-driven discovery currently supports the adolescent brain research of the NIH-funded National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA). The laboratory also investigates brain patterns specific to alcohol use disorder, depression, and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) across the adult age range, and have advanced the understanding of a variety of brain diseases including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, glioma, and aging.

BioRachele Pojednic, PhD, EdM, FACSM is a Lecturer (Adjunct) in the Human Biology Department and the Director of Education at Stanford Lifestyle Medicine. In addition to her academic appointments, Dr Pojednic is also the Chief Science Officer at Restore Hyperwellness. Her current research examinees nutrition, supplementation and physical activity interventions on muscle physiology, performance and recovery. She also examines educational models for healthcare professionals focused on nutrition and exercise. Dr Pojednic has received NIH research funding from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Vermont Biomedical Research Network (VBRN) an IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program. She serves on the Board of Governors for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Exercise Is Medicine® initiative and was previously the Interim Executive Director for the Prescription for Activity Task Force and member of The American Council on Exercise (ACE) Industry Advisory Panel. She was recently awarded the Petra Shattuck Excellence in Teaching Award from Harvard University.
Dr Pojednic received her PhD from the Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and completed her postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School in the Joslin Diabetes Center and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
She has a passion for science communication and has been a consultant and writer for several organizations including NPR, Sirius Doctor Radio, Time, Popular Science, Self, Shape, Women's Health, Forbes, Runners World, and Boston Magazine. Alexandra LaPat Polasko

BioDr. Alexandra Polasko is a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine in the Department of Urology in Dr. James Brooks's lab. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. from UCLA in Civil and Environmental Engineering in Dr. Shaily Mahendra's lab and bachelors from UC Berkeley. Before coming to Stanford, she was a postdoctoral fellow at UCLA in the School of Dentistry, Oral Biology Division under Dr. Hung Ton-That where she studied the role motility plays as a virulence factor in oral pathogens. Currently, Dr. Polasko's research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms that drive benign prostate hyperplasia, which is the abnormal growth of the prostate and affects nearly 80% of men over eighty and can result in impaired urine storage and voiding as well as renal failure. She is a co-inventor on two patents and received UCLA's prestigious Distinguished Teaching Award for Teaching Assistants (2021).

Danielle Polevoi

BioDanielle Polevoi is a recently board certified physician assistant who graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine’s Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program with a concentration in Medical Education. During PA school, she was selected as one of fifteen students nationwide to participate in The PAEA’s Future Educator Fellowship program. She was also chosen by Stanford MSPA faculty as one of three students in the Class of 2022 to represent our program in the AAPA Virtual Challenge Bowl in 2021.
Prior to getting her master's degree, Danielle attended UCLA where she received a B.S. in Biology. In order to gain patient care experience for PA school, she worked as an Emergency Department Scribe at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center and as a medical assistant in a gynecologic surgery group.
Danielle was born and raised in San Francisco. She is eager to begin her career at SHC in the Medical ICU taking care of critically ill patients. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch in the Pollack lab centers on translational genomics, with a focus on prostate diseases. The lab employs next-generation sequencing, single-cell and spatial genomics, gene editing, and human cell/tissue-based modeling to uncover disease mechanisms, biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Matthew Porteus

BioDr. Porteus was raised in California and was a local graduate of Gunn High School before completing A.B. degree in “History and Science” at Harvard University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and wrote an thesis entitled “Safe or Dangerous Chimeras: The recombinant DNA controversy as a conflict between differing socially constructed interpretations of recombinant DNA technology.” He then returned to the area and completed his combined MD, PhD at Stanford Medical School with his PhD focused on understanding the molecular basis of mammalian forebrain development with his PhD thesis entitled “Isolation and Characterization of TES-1/DLX-2: A Novel Homeobox Gene Expressed During Mammalian Forebrain Development.” After completion of his dual degree program, he was an intern and resident in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital and then completed his Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship in the combined Boston Chidlren’s Hospital/Dana Farber Cancer Institute program. For his fellowship and post-doctoral research he worked with Dr. David Baltimore at MIT and CalTech where he began his studies in developing homologous recombination as a strategy to correct disease causing mutations in stem cells as definitive and curative therapy for children with genetic diseases of the blood, particularly sickle cell disease. Following his training with Dr. Baltimore, he took an independent faculty position at UT Southwestern in the Departments of Pediatrics and Biochemistry before again returning to Stanford in 2010 as an Associate Professor. During this time his work has been the first to demonstrate that gene correction could be achieved in human cells at frequencies that were high enough to potentially cure patients and is considered one of the pioneers and founders of the field of genome editing—a field that now encompasses thousands of labs and several new companies throughout the world. His research program continues to focus on developing genome editing by homologous recombination as curative therapy for children with genetic diseases but also has interests in the clonal dynamics of heterogeneous populations and the use of genome editing to better understand diseases that affect children including infant leukemias and genetic diseases that affect the muscle. Clinically, Dr. Porteus attends at the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital where he takes care of pediatric patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Klaus Porzig
Emeritus Adjunct Clinical Professor, Medicine - Oncology
BioKlaus Porzig is an Emeritus Adjunct Clinical Professor at Stanford. He was active in Stanford’s clinical oncology program from 1979 until 2008. He was an Attending Physician on the Oncology inpatient service (MED III initially and then MED X) annually from 1979 until retirement in 2008. He was active in the breast cancer program during those decades. Dr. Porzig was a founding partner in South Bay Oncology in 1979 which became part of the Stanford Cancer Center in the Southbay after his retirement. He was a member of the council of the California Breast Cancer Research Program from 2006-2010 and served as the Chair of the CBCRP council 2008-2009. From 2013 to 2021, he was a member of the Stanford Medicine Alumni Association Board of Governors and served as chair of the Awards Committee during that time. Klaus has been a docent at Stanford's Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve since 2018.

Lisa Post

BioLisa Post is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Stanford University where she has worked for over 30 years. She is the Director of The Sport Psychiatry and Psychology Clinic for Stanford University’s Varsity Athletic program, which she founded in 2000. She was the Team Psychologist for the San Francisco 49ers for 13 years.
In addition to her sport related expertise, Dr. Post’s practice focuses on psychological and psychosocial issues relevant to high performing individuals. She is the Psychology Liaison for Stanford’s Department of Surgery and facilitates work-life balance support groups for the General Surgery and Vascular Resident programs. She conducts weekly wellness check-ins with Surgery Department Fellows. In addition, Dr. Post is the founding Director of WellConnect, a 24-hour psychological consultation and referral service for Stanford School of Medicine Residents and Faculty.
Dr. Post is a certified clinician in internationally recognized treatments for depression, anxiety, emotion regulation, tolerating distress and interpersonal effectiveness and substance abuse. She founded the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Clinic in 1992 and is a certified provider of Dialectical Behavior Therapy. -
Anna Postolova, MD, MPH

BioDr. Postolova is board certified in internal medicine, allergy/immunology, and rheumatology. She cares for patients of all ages with compromised immune systems or allergic conditions including eczema, hives, angioedema, food and drug allergy, allergic rhinitis, asthma, and chronic rhinosinusitis.
She has authored papers and spoken on care for patients with an overlap of autoimmunity and immunodeficiency and conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, myositis, vasculitis, granulomatous mastitis, and osteoarthritis.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research addresses one of the most devastating and poorly treated symptoms that can develop in people with Parkinson's disease - Dementia. We use biological markers, multi-modal neuroimaging and genetics to understand the different underlying causes of dementia and to understand why dementia develops more quickly in some patients, but not others.

Clinical Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & HepatologyBioDr. Poullos is a native of Stockton California. He earned his B.S. at Santa Clara University and M.D. degree at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, after which he did an Internal Medicine residency at the University of California-San Francisco, finishing in 2002. He stayed at UCSF as a Gastroenterology fellow until 2004. However, after a spinal cord injury, he decided to retrain in Radiology. He did his Radiology residency at Stanford University, where he also completed a fellowship In Body Imaging in 2009. Dr. Poullos is now a faculty member in both the departments of Radiology and Gastroenterology and Hepatology. His clinical practice is at Stanford Medicine, where he specializes in CT, MRI, and ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis. His interests include radiology of the acute abdomen, hepatobiliary imaging, and colorectal cancer screening.
Dr. Poullos is the Founder and Co-Chair of the Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE), a group composed of people with disabilities and their allies at Stanford Medicine. In that role, Dr. Poullos advocates for students and healthcare providers with disabilities and for health equity for disabled patients. He is a Faculty Advisor to the Stanford Medical Students with Disability and Chronic Illness (MSDCI) and the MSDCI National organizations. Dr. Poullos and SMADIE have made significant contributions to the disability community, including starting the Stanford Conference on Disability in Healthcare and Medicine, now in its seventh year, which draws over 1,900 participants from 54 countries. He is the Co-Host of the popular “DocsWithDisabilities” podcast, has spoken internationally on disability access in medicine, and has written and conducted research in the field. One of his proudest achievements is co-creating the Disability in Medicine Mutual Mentorship Program, which serves the needs of disabled medical and healthcare students and practitioners. In 2022, Dr. Poullos received the Stanford President’s Award for Excellence through Diversity. -

I enjoy being with my 4 children and gardening. In my spare time I fit in endurance athletics, currently cycling (road and MTB), and in the past, running and triathlons. -

MSTP StudentCurrent Research and Scholarly InterestsI am broadly interested in brain-computer interfaces. This includes reading neural activity through clinical means like intracranial EEG, or lab methods like Neuropixels. Similarly, I am interested in neuromodulation, such as deep brain stimulation for neurosurgical patients, or optogenetics for discovery.

MBA, expected graduation 2028BioJohnny Powell, from Greensboro, North Carolina, is pursuing an MD at Stanford School of Medicine as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar. He graduated cum laude from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a minor in psychology. Johnny aspires to lead medical practice in underserved communities and drive structural change to make health care more accessible at scale. While at Harvard, he led youth mentorship programming in Boston and Japan, conducted research in the natural and social sciences, and shadowed hospital physicians in Spain. As president of the Harvard Black Men’s Forum, Johnny implemented lasting infrastructure to promote public service and inclusion. After graduating, he worked as an associate consultant at Bain & Company on health care and social impact projects. Passionate about health equity, Johnny also served as research coordinator for the All of Us Research Program, a national National Institutes of Health initiative to increase diversity in health care research, at the University of Chicago.
