Helen H. Hsu
Outreach Director, Counseling and Psychological Services
BioDr. Hsu is Director of Outreach, Asian American specialist, and lecturer at Stanford University. She is Past President of the American Psychological Association Div. 45 (Society for the Study of Race, Culture and Ethnicity) and is a Past President and Fellow of the Asian American Psychological Association (AAPA), past Chair of the Training Advisory Committee at the American Psychological Association (APA) Minority Fellowship Program. Dr. Hsu also served on the APA Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Expression, and was a Union City Human Relations Commissioner for 10 years.
As a bi-cultural, bi-lingual clinician, Helen has worked within the Alameda County Behavioral Healthcare system as a clinical supervisor within Asian Community Mental Health Services and the City of Fremont Youth and Family Services overseeing K-12 school based clinical services and community care for those living with chronic and severe mental health conditions. She directs outreach and education for preventative mental health care for Stanford CAPS, and teaches the Art of Grief for Stanford Living Education and co-teaches Asian American psychological perspectives on campus.
Dr. Hsu's work has focused primarily on intersectional diverse communities, culturally responsive treatment, parenting education, school-based clinical services, grief and loss, and mentorship and leadership training of psychology students and is committed to community advocacy and leadership mentoring focusing on marginalized communities.
She is on the advisory board for the JED foundation which focuses on teen and young adult suicide prevention and promoting mental health. She has worked extensively in private practice and as a consultant for Netflix and various universities, corporate, and clinical training sites. Dr. Hsu is an author of several book chapters on clinical topics and the recent Healing Trauma Workbook for Asian American. -

Emily Jiang
Graduate Admissions System and Operations Manager, Graduate Admissions
BioEmily started her journey at Stanford in 2010 as a graduate student in chemistry. Through her experiences teaching undergraduates and mentoring other teaching assistants in chemistry, she discovered her passion for helping students navigate the intricacies of their academic experience, and this led her to shift her career path toward higher education administration after earning her M.S. in Chemistry in 2012.
Emily spent the early part of her career working in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Graduate School of Business in functions that span graduate admissions, student life, and course registration for the largest graduate student populations on campus (1000+). In these student services roles, she was always drawn to systems and making operations run more efficiently, and this led her to pursue a unique opportunity to serve as the technical lead for Knight-Hennessy Scholars starting in 2018, the year of the program's inaugural cohort.
In 2021, Emily joined Student and Academic Services as the first Graduate Admissions System and Operations Manager. In this hybrid technical/managerial role, she hopes to establish a strong structure to actively configure and maintain Stanford's new graduate admissions system (Slate by Technolutions), while nurturing a community across campus that will work together to optimize the applicant, staff, and faculty experience. Outside of work, she plays violin in the Palo Alto Philharmonic and practices "kitchen chemistry" through her love of cooking. -

Johanna Mills Metzgar
Vice Provost, Vice Provost for Student Affairs
BioJohanna joined Stanford as Associate Vice Provost for Student and Academic Services and University Registrar in May 2018.
In her role, Johanna leads the Registrar's Office and seven other departments, including the Bechtel International Center, Graduate Admissions, Mind Over Money Financial Wellness, Student Financial Services, Student Information Systems, the Student Services Center, and User Experience & Design Strategy.
Under Johanna’s leadership, Student and Academic Services (SAS) has implemented a multi-year IT strategy that involves reimagining the experience for Stanford students and scholars by modernizing technology systems, making connections between them more seamless, and enabling students to easily navigate — and get the most out of — their academic journey at Stanford.
In addition to enhancing student services and the student experience, SAS is investing in these three areas to advance our vision:
- Strengthen engagement and connection among staff who support student services across the university community
- Renew and extend the system infrastructure supporting students, scholars, and faculty
- Build an enterprise academic, advising, planning, and enrollment platform as the first step toward replacing the enterprise student information system
Before joining Stanford, Johanna served as associate registrar at the University of California, Berkeley. She brought to Stanford more than 20 years of combined experience in student services at Cal as well as Columbia University, where she worked for 10 years in numerous roles, including associate director for the institution’s Division of Student Services and acting executive director of student services at Columbia’s Medical School. She also served as an associate registrar, assistant registrar, and financial aid officer at Columbia.
In her previous roles, Johanna streamlined and improved a wide range of academic and administrative processes, including billing, third-party payments, grading, transcript fulfillment, course approval, catalog production, class scheduling, enrollment management, degree audit, and graduation checkout. She has demonstrated a deep commitment to students by creating systems that have transformed how students explore courses and design their academic paths.

Johanna earned a master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University and holds a bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in journalism from San Francisco State University. -
Marley Murrell

SGSI Assistant, Vice Provost for Graduate EducationBioMarley Murrell, proudly from Tucson, Arizona, is a PhD student in the Curriculum and Teacher Education (CTE) program at Stanford University. She is also working on her PhD Minor in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CSRE). Her scholarship is being supported by the Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education (EDGE) Fellowship. Her current research interest are within mathematics education looking at teacher learning, professional development, and mathematics anxiety.
Prior to her studies at Stanford, Marley earned her Bachelors of Science in Mathematics with an emphasis in Education from the University of Arizona. While teaching, she earned her Master of Science in Mathematics Education from Northern Arizona University. In her teaching career she taught Algebra, Cambridge Algebra, Geometry, Cambridge Geometry, AVID 9, and Dual Enrollment College Algebra all at Amphitheater High School, her alma matter. As a high school teacher, she founded and ran the schools Girls Powerlifting Club. She also coached the school's Color Guard. -
Ilyssa Narisse Padua, MSN, RN, FNP-C

BioIlyssa N. Padua, MSN, RN, FNP-C is a Family Nurse Practitioner in Primary Care. She graduated with her Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree from Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA. Ilyssa provides primary care to pediatric through older adult populations in family and internal medicine settings. She also has special interest and experience in women’s health and young adult sexual health. Ilyssa is from Campbell, CA and enjoys caring for the communities of the Bay Area. Outside of clinic, she is an avid athlete with a strong passion for fitness and Muay Thai. She also enjoys traveling with her partner and spending time with her family and rescue pup.
