My research can be divided into the following sub-categories: robotic assistants, connected devices and intelligent wearables. My Assistive Robotics and Manipulation lab focuses heavily on both the analytical and experimental components of assistive technology design.

Thomas Kenny
Richard W. Weiland Professor and Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the School of Engineering
BioKenny's group is researching fundamental issues and applications of micromechanical structures. These devices are usually fabricated from silicon wafers using integrated circuit fabrication tools. Using these techniques, the group builds sensitive accelerometers, infrared detectors, and force-sensing cantilevers. This research has many applications, including integrated packaging, inertial navigation, fundamental force measurements, experiments on bio-molecules, device cooling, bio-analytical instruments, and small robots. Because this research field is multidisciplinary in nature, work in this group is characterized by strong collaborations with other departments, as well as with local industry.

Ali Keshavarzi
Adjunct Professor, Electrical Engineering
BioAli Keshavarzi, Ph.D. is an Adjunct Professor in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. Ali is involved in scholarly research and is an advisor to Stanford SystemX IoE Research. Ali works with DARPA as an advisor and subject matter expert on the Electronic Resurgence Initiative (ERI) and is a member of DARPA MTO Investor Working Board (IWB). Ali is a principal and the founder of Leading Edge Research LLC, Los Altos, CA.
Ali is a technology visionary and a leader who has been at the forefront of technology innovation with a track record of delivering critical process technologies, devices, circuits, SoCs, and modules to the semiconductor industry. Ali was the Vice President of R&D and a Fellow at Cypress Semiconductor and held various positions at Intel, TSMC, and GLOBALFOUNDRIES in a variety of technical and leadership roles over 25 years. Ali was a visiting research professor at UC Berkeley from 2017 to 2018.
He has over 60 U.S. patents, over 70 peer reviewed papers, has received best-paper awards and the best-panel award at ISSCC, most paper citation awards from DAC and IEDM. He has served in TPC of IEDM and ISSCC and has been the general chair of ISLPED. He received the prestigious Intel Achievement Award (IAA). Ali was awarded a distinguished Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineer (OECE) of Purdue University.

Razieh Khalifehzadeh
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Chemical Engineering
BioDr. Khalifehzadeh received a dual Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Nanotechnology & Molecular Engineering from the University of Washington (UW) in 2018. Her thesis research was focused on design of new classes of degradable polymers for the next generation of cardiovascular stents. Throughout her graduate study, she received multiple prestigious awards such as Pre-doctoral Clinical Research Training (TL1) scholarship from National Center for Advancing Translational Science at NIH, Society for Biomaterials (SFB) travel award, Dean of Engineering Scholarship and Graduate School Fund for Excellence and Innovation (GSFEI, UW). She is currently a T32 postdoctoral research fellow in the laboratories of Prof. Zhenan Bao and Prof. Sam Gambhir at Stanford University. Her interdisciplinary research lies at the interface of engineering and translational medicine and focuses on the development of wireless, implantable or wearable bioelectronics for early disease diagnosis and therapy.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research focuses on the thermal engineering, fabrication, and characterization of novel phase change heterostructures (PCH) for high density, low-power data storage both on the flexible and non-flexible platform. My research further expands into the fabrication and characterization of PCH for thermoelectrics and low-power solid-state flexible reflective display. I am also working on the real-time characterization of fast temperature sensors using atomically thin two-dimensional materials.

Yasser Khan
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Chemical Engineering
BioYasser Khan is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University, in Prof. Zhenan Bao’s Group. Yasser completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley, in Prof. Ana Claudia Arias’ Group. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas, and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Yasser’s research focuses mainly on wearable medical devices, with an emphasis on flexible bioelectronic and biophotonic sensors. Additionally, he worked on projects ranging from “electrochemical etching of ultra-sharp SPM tips” to “energy harvesting in complex systems.” His job experience includes internships at UC Berkeley, Oxford University, Stanford University, and Zyvex Labs in Texas.

BioKhatib's research is in autonomous robots, human-centered robotics, human-friendly robot design, dynamic simulations, and haptic interactions. His exploration in this research ranges from the autonomous ability of a robot to cooperate with a human to the haptic interaction of a user with an animated character, virtual prototype, or surgical instrument.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch in this laboratory focuses on problems where deep insights into enzymology and metabolism can be harnessed to improve human health.
For the past two decades, we have studied and engineered enzymatic assembly lines called polyketide synthases that catalyze the biosynthesis of structurally complex and medicinally fascinating antibiotics in bacteria. An example of such an assembly line is found in the erythromycin biosynthetic pathway. Our current focus is on understanding the structure and mechanism of this polyketide synthase. At the same time, we are developing methods to decode the vast and growing number of orphan polyketide assembly lines in the sequence databases.
For more than a decade, we have also investigated the pathogenesis of celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine, with the goal of discovering therapies and related management tools for this widespread but overlooked disease. Ongoing efforts focus on understanding the pivotal role of transglutaminase 2 in triggering the inflammatory response to dietary gluten in the celiac intestine. -
Butrus Khuri-Yakub
Professor (Research) of Electrical Engineering
BioButrus (Pierre) T. Khuri-Yakub is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He received the BS degree from the American University of Beirut, the MS degree from Dartmouth College, and the Ph.D. degree from Stanford University, all in electrical engineering. His current research interests include medical ultrasound imaging and therapy, ultrasound neuro-stimulation, chemical/biological sensors, gas flow and energy flow sensing, micromachined ultrasonic transducers, and ultrasonic fluid ejectors. He has authored over 600 publications and has been principal inventor or co-inventor of 104 US and international issued patents. He was awarded the Medal of the City of Bordeaux in 1983 for his contributions to Nondestructive Evaluation, the Distinguished Advisor Award of the School of Engineering at Stanford University in 1987, the Distinguished Lecturer Award of the IEEE UFFC society in 1999, a Stanford University Outstanding Inventor Award in 2004, Distinguished Alumnus Award of the School of Engineering of the American University of Beirut in 2005, Stanford Biodesign Certificate of Appreciation for commitment to educate, mentor and inspire Biodesgin Fellows, 2011, and 2011 recipient of IEEE Rayleigh award.

Lukasz Kidzinski
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Bioengineering
BioŁukasz Kidziński is a researcher in the Mobilize Center at Stanford, working on the intersection of computer science, statistics, and biomechanics. Previously a researcher in the CHILI group, Computer-Human Interaction in Learning and Instruction, at the EPFL. He obtained his Ph.D. training at Université Libre de Bruxelles in mathematical statistics, working on time series analysis and functional data. He obtained two master degrees, in mathematics and in computer science, from the University of Warsaw.
His current research interests in machine learning include tracking the progression of diseases. His main area of applications is biomedical data science, biomechanics, and computer-human interactions. -
Anne Kiremidjian
Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering
BioKiremidjian's current research focuses on the design and implementation of wireless sensor networks for structural damage and health monitoring and the development of robust algorithms for structural damage diagnosis that can be embedded in wireless sensing units. She works on structural component and systems reliability methods; structural damage evaluation models; and regional damage, loss and casualty estimation methods utilizing geographic information and database management systems for portfolios of buildings or spatially distributed lifeline systems assessment with ground motion and structure correlations.

Peter K. Kitanidis
Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering
BioKitanidis develops methods for the solution of interpolation and inverse problems utilizing observations and mathematical models of flow and transport. He studies dilution and mixing of soluble substances in heterogeneous geologic formations, issues of scale in mass transport in heterogeneous porous media, and techniques to speed up the decay of pollutants in situ. He also develops methods for hydrologic forecasting and the optimization of sampling and control strategies.
