Deborah Kado
Professor of Medicine (Primary Care and Population Health) and, by courtesy, of Epidemiology and Population Health
BioDr. Kado is a board-certified, fellowship-trained doctor specializing in geriatrics. She serves as co-director of the Stanford Longevity Center. She is a professor of medicine and chief of research for the Geriatrics Section in the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health. She is also the Director of the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) at VA Palo Alto Health Care System.
For each patient, Dr. Kado prepares a personalized care plan. Her objective is to help all individuals maintain the best possible health and quality of life as they age.
A special interest of Dr. Kado is bone health. She has conducted extensive research focused on osteoporosis and the related disorder hyperkyphosis.
Since joining the UCLA faculty in 2000, she has received continuous funding for her research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
She has over 100 peer-reviewed publications of her research findings in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Osteoporosis International, Journal of Gerontology and Medical Sciences, Journal of Geriatric Oncology, Nature Communications, and other peer-reviewed journals.
In 2007, she defined hyperkyphosis as a new geriatric syndrome. Her discoveries in this field were first featured in the American College or Physician’s premier internal medicine journal Annals of Internal Medicine. Later, they also appeared in a dedicated chapter in UpToDate, the electronic resource providing evidence-based clinical decision support for doctors worldwide.
Prior to coming to Stanford, Dr. Kado practiced at UC San Diego where she started a dedicated osteoporosis clinic for patient care and research. She later broadened her research interests beyond musculoskeletal aging to study other aging-related topics such as the gut microbiome in older men and the effects of cancer treatments on aging in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
Dr. Kado is a California native. She trained at UCSF and UCLA. She also earned a Master of Science degree in epidemiology at the UCLA School of Public Health, sponsored by the John Hartford Foundation.
She is a member of the American Geriatrics Society, American Society of Bone and Mineral Research, Gerontological Society of America, The Endocrine Society, and other professional organizations. She co-chairs the NIH National Institute on Aging Workshop for the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research. She also participates in the Bone Health Working Group of the Society for Women’s Health Research. -

James Kahn

My most recent scholarly activities concentrate on working as a team to capitalize on the data stored in electronic medical records, HIV disease modeling and using electronic medical records for outcome research and developing a mentorship program for early career scientists.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAs a breastfeeding medicine physician, I am passionate about advocating for mother-infant dyads and supporting their breastfeeding journeys. Additionally, I am interested studying and addressing disparities in initiation and duration of breastfeeding, particularly in lower-resourced populations, by building and advancing community partnerships.
I am also interested in the use of digital health tools to advance upstream determinants of health in community-based settings. My current funded research projects include: 1) Providing a telehealth-based, weight control program to children with obesity from lower-income, racial and ethnic minority families (Gardner GOALS) and 2) Assessing and addressing disparities in healthy behaviors in families from under-resourced settings through the use of a secure, multilingual mobile neighborhood app (Our Voice: Beyond Clinic Walls). -
Sharada Kalanidhi

Anusha Kalbasi, M.D.
Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology (Radiation Therapy)
BioDr. Kalbasi is a board-certified radiation oncologist and physician-scientist at the Stanford Cancer Institute. He is also an associate professor of radiation oncology at Stanford Medicine and a project member of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy.
Dr. Kalbasi specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of solid tumors, especially sarcoma and melanoma, with a focus on bringing new treatments to patients. This focus includes using advanced techniques in cancer immunotherapy, including CAR T-cell therapy and innate immune agonists.
Dr. Kalbasi's NIH-funded laboratory is actively engaged in translational research with a special focus on developing new immunotherapy treatments for patients with solid tumors, especially sarcoma. A primary focus of his ongoing research involves identifying why some patients do not benefit from treatments like immunotherapy or radiation, then designing and testing strategies to overcome treatment resistance. Dr. Kalbasi is also an experienced leader of clinical trials related to immunotherapy, T cell therapy and radiation therapy, and is a recipient of the Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator Award.
Prior to his arrival at Stanford Health Care, Dr. Kalbasi was assistant professor of radiation oncology in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and chief of sarcoma radiotherapy at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. During his tenure, he was named a NextGen Star by the American Association of Cancer Research in recognition for excellence in cancer research.
Dr. Kalbasi’s work has been published in leading journals including Nature, Science Translational Medicine, JAMA Oncology, Lancet Oncology, Nature Cancer and Cancer Discovery. He has served as a peer reviewer for multiple prestigious journals, including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Cell and the Journal of Clinical Investigation. He has also presented research to his peers at the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. -

BioDr. Nathan Kalinowski is a Hospital Dentist and Clinical Assistant Professor in Dental Medicine and Surgery. He performs medically necessary dental clearance and extractions for patients preparing for cardiac surgery, radiation therapy, or organ transplantation. He also performs surgical treatment of infection and trauma to the teeth and supporting alveolar bone including reconstruction using dental implants.

Nicholas Antonios Kalogriopoulos

BioNick's broad research interests are in developing tools and technologies for research and therapeutic applications. Nick obtained a B.S. in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During his undergraduate career, he trained with Dr. Paul Sondel, where he worked on preclinical testing of novel immunotherapeutic agents for the treatment of neuroblastoma. He obtained a Ph.D. in Biomedical Science with Dr. Pradipta Ghosh, elucidating the structural basis of non-canonical G protein activation by a novel protein family of Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Modulators (GEMs). As a Postdoctoral Researcher with Professor Alice Ting at Stanford University, his current research focuses on developing a new system for programmable and user-controlled cellular behaviors for immuno-oncology applications.

Praveen Kalra

BioDr. Praveen Kalra is Board Certified in Anesthesia and in Critical Care. Dr. Kalra loves all aspects of his specialty. He specializes in trauma, orthopedic, brain and spine surgery, urology, head and neck surgery, and cancer surgery. He was appointed Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiology (FASA) in 2023.
His professional interests include devising protocols for patient safety, informed consent, reducing the impact of anesthetics on the environment, addressing climate change by reducing green house gas emissions in the health care setting, resident education to emphasize evidence based safe care, superior documentation, and mentoring medical students. He has been in practice for over 18 years. In 2022, Dr. Kalra received the inaugural Sustainability Ambassador Award at SHC for removing Desflurane (anesthetic gas with highest global warming potential) from OR and undertaking multiple green initiatives in reducing plastic & biohazardous waste at Stanford.
Dr. Kalra completed his residency in Anesthesia from Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and a fellowship in Critical Care from Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. -

Neil M. Kalwani

BioNeil Kalwani, MD, MPP is a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. He attended college at Yale University and completed graduate degrees in medicine and public policy at Harvard University. He trained in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital before arriving at Stanford in 2018 for fellowship in cardiovascular medicine, during which he served as Chief Fellow. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship through the Stanford-AHRQ Health Services Research Training Program in the Department of Health Policy. His clinical focus is in general and preventive cardiology and echocardiography. He practices at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and at Stanford Health Care.
Dr. Kalwani's research focuses on the evaluation of policies and care delivery innovations designed to improve the value of care for patients with cardiovascular disease. -

Afrin shares a clinical passion in esophageal motility diseases with an an overlapping interest in health services and outcomes research.

Ahmad Kamal, MD, MS

BioDr. Kamal graduated from the University of California at Irvine in 1995 with a B.S. in Biology and received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1999. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology at Stanford in 2006, during which time he also earned an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology.
In addition to serving as associate chief of the division of gastroenterology at SCVMC, Dr. Kamal is vice chair of internal medicine and director of the clinical research pathway, an innovative program that provides mentoring and protected time for clinical research to internal medicine residents. He is active in teaching trainees at all levels and received an outstanding mentor award from Stanford's biodesign program.
Dr. Kamal has been named a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and has been recognized several times in the "Top Doctors" list. He received the Hospital Quality Institute's C. Duane Dauner Award for his work in specialty care transformation and was one of 6 recipients of Silicon Valley Business Journal's Excellence in Healthcare Award. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as Director of Health Systems Preparedness for Santa Clara County and was awarded a Medal for Outstanding Service by the Board of Supervisors.
Dr. Kamal has also been active in clinical and health services research, authoring over 20 peer-reviewed publications, 40 abstracts, and 7 book chapters. -

BioDr. Kathleen Kan is a fellowship-trained pediatric urologist with a clinical practice based at LPCH and additional outreach programs in the South Bay. Her current practice includes general, endoscopic and complex reconstructive procedures and a clinical counseling interest in kidney stone disease and differences in sexual differentiation. She currently serves as the Associate Program Director of the Urology residency program.
Her current research is focused on understanding why health elementary schoolchildren develop new bladder and bowel problems. -

Matthew Kanan
Associate Professor of Chemistry and Senior Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy
BioAssociate Professor of Chemistry Matthew Kanan develops new catalysts and chemical reactions for applications in renewable energy conversion and CO2 utilization. His group at Stanford University has recently developed a novel method to create plastic from carbon dioxide and inedible plant material rather than petroleum products, and pioneered the study of “defect-rich” heterogeneous electro-catalysts for converting carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide to liquid fuel.
Matthew Kanan completed undergraduate study in chemistry at Rice University (B.A. 2000 Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa). During doctoral research in organic chemistry at Harvard University (Ph.D. 2005), he developed a novel method for using DNA to discover new chemical reactions. He then moved into inorganic chemistry for his postdoctoral studies as a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he discovered a water oxidation catalyst that operates in neutral water. He joined the Stanford Chemistry Department faculty in 2009 to continue research into energy-related catalysis and reactions. His research and teaching have already been recognized in selection as one of Chemistry & Engineering News’ first annual Talented 12, the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, Eli Lilly New Faculty Award, and recognition as a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Environmental Mentor, among other honors.
The Kanan Lab addresses fundamental challenges in catalysis and synthesis with an emphasis on enabling new technologies for scalable CO2 utilization. The interdisciplinary effort spans organic synthesis, materials chemistry and electrochemistry.
One of the greatest challenges of the 21st century is to transition to an energy economy with ultra-low greenhouse gas emissions without compromising quality of life for a growing population. The Kanan Lab aims to help enable this transition by developing catalysts and chemical reactions that recycle CO2 into fuels and commodity chemicals using renewable energy sources. To be implemented on a substantial scale, these methods must ultimately be competitive with fossil fuels and petrochemicals. With this requirement in mind, the group focuses on the fundamental chemical challenge of making carbon–carbon (C–C) bonds because multi-carbon compounds have higher energy density, greater value, and more diverse applications that one-carbon compounds. Both electrochemical and chemical methods are being pursued. For electrochemical conversion, the group studies how defects known as grain boundaries can be exploited to improve CO2/CO electro-reduction catalysis. Recent work has unveiled quantitative correlations between grain boundaries and catalytic activity, establishing a new design principle for electrocatalysis, and developed grain boundary-rich copper catalysts with unparalleled activity for converting carbon monoxide to liquid fuel. For chemical CO2 conversion, the group is developing C–H carboxylation and CO2 hydrogenation reactions that are promoted by simple carbonate salts. These reactions provide a way to make C–C bonds between un-activated substrates and CO2 without resorting to energy-intensive and hazardous reagents. Among numerous applications, carbonate-promoted carboxylation enables the synthesis of a monomer used to make polyester plastic from CO2 and a feedstock derived from agricultural waste.
In addition to CO2 chemistry, the Kanan group is pursuing new strategies to control selectivity in molecular catalysis for fine chemical synthesis. Of particular interest in the use of electrostatic interactions to discriminate between competing reaction pathways based on their charge distributions. This effort uses ion pairing or interfaces to control the local electrostatic environment in which a reaction takes place. The group has recently shown that local electric fields can control regioselectivity in isomerization reactions catalyzed by gold complexes. -

BioDr. Kang is an interventional cardiologist who specializes in the treatment of structural heart disease. He has expertise in complex coronary interventions, transcatheter aortic and mitral valve replacements, transcatheter mitral valve repair, left atrial appendage occlusion, PFO/septal defect closure, alcohol septal ablation, and paravalvular leak closure.
A Bay Area native, he graduated from Stanford University and obtained his medical degree at Yale University. He came back to Stanford to train in internal medicine, cardiology, and interventional cardiology before completing an advanced structural interventions fellowship at Ford Hospital. -

Xiaojian Kang

BioDr Kang received his PhD in Physics and MS in Computer Science from Indiana University Bloomington in September of 1998. Then he joined Diagnostic Imaging Science Center at University of Washington in Seattle for postdoctoral research.
In September of 2000, he worked as an MR Physicist in the Human Cognitive Neurophysiology Laboratory in Department of Neurology at University of Californian at Davis. His tasks were to maintain and modify the sequences for MR research on a 3 T Siemens Verio scanner and a 1.5 T Philips Eclipse scanner, and develop new procedures for MR data analysis, statistics and visualization. He has published 20+ papers to introduce the innovative methods for MR data analysis, which including the local landmark method, high-resolution space method, and cortical surface projection mapping method, and automated method to detect brain abnormalities. All of the methods have been applied successfully to the MR researches in the lab.
In September of 2017, he joined as an MR Physicist in Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) at VA Palo Alto and the Adamson Brain Stimulation Lab in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University.His main tasks are to participate in the research projects funded by Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense, and administration of windows and linux servers for neuroimaging studies.

Michael S. Kapiloff, MD, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Michael S. Kapiloff is a faculty member in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine) and a member of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. Although Dr. Kapiloff was at one time a Board-Certified General Pediatrician, he is currently involved in full-time basic science and translational research. His laboratory studies the basic molecular mechanisms underlying the response of the retinal ganglion cell and cardiac myocyte to disease. The longstanding interest of his laboratory is the role in intracellular signal transduction of multimolecular complexes organized by scaffold proteins. Recently, his lab has also been involved in the translation of these concepts into new therapies, including the development of new AAV gene therapy biologics for the prevention and treatment of heart failure and for neuroprotection in the eye.
