BioAni is a nurse practitioner with previous experience in clinical research in cardiovascular disease. Her clinical practice is providing pre and post operative medical care for the admitted vascular surgery patients, and ensuring discharge plans are seamless and comprehensive. She has been a nurse practitioner for the inpatient Vascular Surgery service since 2014 and was promoted to the Lead Advanced Practice Provider in 2020. She oversees all aspects of the Vascular Surgery APP's in Palo Alto, Pleasanton, and Emeryville. She completed her master of science in nursing, and nurse practitioner training at the Yale School of Nursing in New Haven, CT; and remains an active alumni member. She is a board certified Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

Amir Bahmani

BioAmir Bahmani is a Genetics Instructor and Director of Stanford's Deep Data Research Center (https://deepdata.stanford.edu ) at the Stanford School of Medicine. He has worked on distributed and parallel computing applications since 2008. Amir is currently an active researcher in the VA Million Veteran Program (MVP), Human Tumor Atlas Network (HTAN), Human BioMolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP), Stanford Metabolic Health Center (MHC), Integrated Personal Omics Profiling (iPOP), and Bridge to Artificial Intelligence (Bridge2AI).
His team has designed and developed several notable cloud-scale frameworks, including the Personal Health Dashboard (PHD), cloud-based cost-saving platforms such as Hummingbird and Swarm, and the MyPHD platform, which now has over 12,000 participants and hosts more than 37 studies. His team also created Stanford Data Ocean (SDO), an innovative platform for educating engineers and biologists. SDO is the first serverless multi-omics and wearables data platform used for education and training.
Since 2017, he has trained more than 30 graduate interns (engineers and designers) from outside the School of Medicine, engaging them in the field of medicine. His course has been offered to physicians, biologists, engineers, and designers, earning him recognition as the recipient of Stanford’s 2024 Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2023, he received the Terman Mentorship Award for mentoring Terman Fellow Ryan Park (top 1%), who transitioned to a Genetics PhD program inspired by Amir’s course. Committed to accessibility in education, Amir created a first-of-its-kind scholarship for under-resourced communities at Stanford, providing his course free of charge—along with Genetics certificates—to over 4,500 students from under-resourced backgrounds across 104 countries and all 50 U.S. states. -
Jehan Bahrainwala, MD, FASN
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Nephrology
BioDr. Bahrainwala is a board-certified, fellowship-trained nephrologist with the Stanford Medicine Kidney Clinic. She is a Certified Hypertension Specialist practicing at the AHA-Certified Stanford Hypertension Center. One of her main clinical areas of focus is the diagnosis and treatment of resistant hypertension and secondary hypertension. She also has a clinical interest in caring for patients who are pregnant or planning pregnancy with hypertension and kidney disease. In addition to hypertension, she also cares for patients with all types of kidney diseases. Her extensive experience includes caring for patients with electrolyte abnormalities, kidney stones, chronic kidney disease and end stage kidney disease.
Dr. Bahrainwala is skilled at creating connections with her patients. She treats the whole person rather than the condition. She also strongly believes in patient education and involving them in the medical decision-making process. She integrates their goals of care and other aspects of advanced care planning into treatment planning. She is also interested in the conservative care of elderly patients with advanced kidney disease. She has formal communication skills training in discussing serious illnesses with patients through Vital Talk.
In addition to being a clinician, she is committed to and involved in the medical education of trainees at all levels including medical students, residents and fellows. Fred M Baik, MD
Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery (OHNS)
BioDr. Baik is Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at Stanford University. He provides comprehensive surgical care for patients with head and neck cancer, both as an ablative and reconstructive surgeon. His clinical interests include oral cavity cancer, complex skin cancer, microvascular reconstruction and the diagnosis and management of nodal metastasis. With his background in fluorescence imaging, Dr. Baik’s research focuses on surgical navigation using targeted agents to improve tumor margin assessment and the detection of nodal metastasis, and he currently leads several clinical trials to translate novel imaging techniques.
Dr. Baik graduated with honors in Biology at the University of Pennsylvania and received his medical degree at UC San Diego. After completing his Otolaryngology residency at the University of Washington, he pursued advanced training in Head and Neck Oncology & Reconstructive Surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. He is a board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, and a member of the American Head and Neck Society, American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. -
Elizabeth Bailey, MD, MPH

BioDr. Elizabeth Bailey is a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Stanford and serves as Program Director for the Stanford Dermatology Residency Program, Associate Clinic Chief of Medical Dermatology at Stanford Healthcare, and Director of Global Health Dermatology.
She has a passion for thinking about how we communicate and how we can leverage relationships to improve how we communicate and work as a team in an inclusive and supportive environment. She loves thinking about this in the context of developing relationships with patients to help them achieve the best possible outcomes and in the context of helping our clinical teams perform to the best of their abilities. She also enjoys discovering ways to teach and learn these skills at all stages of medical education. Her work has included a project using art to cultivate communication skills, research on curriculum needs and opportunities to integrate educational content related to sexual and gender minority and skin of color in dermatology residency education, and ongoing work on communication skills training in dermatology residency education.
Dr. Bailey graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and received her medical degree from Columbia University in New York, where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She completed her internship in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and completed both her residency in dermatology and fellowship in dermatopathology at Stanford University Medical Center. She is board certified in dermatology and dermatopathology by the American Boards of Dermatology/Pathology.

BioIrene Bailey is a Regulatory Specialist supporting Dr. Jean Tang in the Dermatology Department. She is a trained clinical laboratory technologist from the Munster Technological University, Cork, Ireland. She worked in pre-clinical research for many years before transitioning her career to clinical research. Irene holds a Certificate in Clinical Trials Design and Management from UC Santa Cruz Extension. She started her career in clinical research at the Stanford Cancer Center, Clinical Trials Office before joining Dr. Tang's Team in 2011.
Outside of work Irene enjoys visual and performing arts, Pilates and yoga. -
Michael Baiocchi

On Partial Leave from 01/01/2026 To 12/01/2026BioProfessor Baiocchi is a PhD statistician in Stanford University's Epidemiology and Population Health Department. He thinks a lot about behavioral interventions and how to rigorously evaluate if and how they work. Methodologically, his work focuses on creating statistically rigorous methods for causal inference that are transparent and easy to critique. He designed -- and was the principle investigator for -- two large randomized studies of interventions to prevent sexual assault in the settlements of Nairobi, Kenya.
Professor Baiocchi is an interventional statistician (i.e., grounded in both the creation and evaluation of interventions). The unifying idea in his research is that he brings rigorous, quantitative approaches to bear upon messy, real-world questions to better people's lives. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe examine how cells communicate and function during fetal development. The work in my laboratory focuses on the establishment of specific cell fates using genomics to decipher interactions between chromatin and developmental signaling cascades, between genomes and rapidly evolving cell types, and between genomic copy number variation and gene expression. In recent years we have focused on the vastly understudied biology of the trophoblast lineage, particularly how this lineage evolved.

BioAs a Pediatric Oncologist, Palliative Care Physician, and Phase I and End– of– Life Care Clinical Investigator, I am intimately aware of the distress experienced by children with advanced cancer and the ethical and end– of– life/bereavement issues surrounding their disease progression. I currently serve as the Chief of the Division of Quality of Life and Pediatric Palliative Care here at Stanford, as well as the Director of the Quality of Life for All (QoLA) Program. Additionally, I serve as the Associate Chief Quality Officer for Patient Experience and Holistic Care. In my past career at St Jude, I served as the Director of our large Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program for more than a decade. My research interests include ethical considerations surrounding enrollment in Phase I clinical trials, AYA palliative oncology care, end– of– life decision making, grief and bereavement, integrating palliative care into the ongoing care of children with cancer as well as patient– reported outcomes and pain and symptom control in the context of pediatric oncology care. I have received significant extramural funding for my research, and I have participated in dozens of studies related to pediatric palliative care. I have authored ~300 academic works on a broad array of palliative care subjects. In sum, I am a recognized global expert and leader in the field of Pediatric Palliative Care.

Matthew C. Baker, MD MS

BioDr. Baker is the Associate Division Chief in the Division of Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University and an internationally recognized expert in IgG4-related disease, as well as the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Stanford Multidisciplinary Sarcoidosis Program. He received his bachelor's degree from Pomona College, his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, and his master's degree in Epidemiology and Clinical Research from Stanford University. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital and his Rheumatology fellowship at Stanford University. Dr. Baker's clinical research program is focused on clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and bench-to-bedside translational research. He has designed and led investigator-initiated and industry sponsored clinical trials in IgG4-related disease, sarcoidosis, Sjogren's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. His epidemiological work aims to better understand disease mechanisms and identify novel drug targets, with a particular interest in repurposing existing drugs for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

Jacob S. Ballon
Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (General Psychiatry and Psychology)
BioJacob S. Ballon, M.D., M.P.H. specializes in the treatment of people with psychotic disorders including schizophrenia. He is the Co-Director of the INSPIRE Clinic at Stanford which provides interdisciplinary care for people experiencing psychosis. He is also the Associate Chair for Patient Services and co-Division Chief for General Adult Psychiatry and Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Ballon completed his residency at Stanford in 2009 and a Schizophrenia Research Fellowship at Columbia University in 2011.
Dr. Ballon's research focuses primarily in clinical trials of new medications for the treatment of schizophrenia. He further maintains an interest in understanding the connections between the brain and the rest of the body as relates to the manifestation and treatment of people who experience psychosis. He works closely with a diverse group of researchers throughout the university and technology community to investigate these connections. He has participated in numerous projects investigating the metabolic implications of schizophrenia and of psychiatric medication including the association of antipsychotic medication with weight gain and insulin resistance.
INSPIRE is an innovative interdisciplinary client-centered resource providing respectful evidence-based care to support people to achieve meaningful recovery from psychosis through collaborative partnership with individuals and their families while advancing knowledge and training for a new generation of providers. With a recovery-oriented philosophy, the clinic provides an array of services including psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and psychosocial evaluations. As a research clinic, they are focused on collaborating with multiple disciplines throughout the university to conduct clinical and basic science research including functional imaging, clinical trials, basic pathophysiology, and genetics. -

BioDr. Stephanie Balters is a neuroscientist, educator, and innovator dedicated to advancing team flourishing and excellence. She directs the Empowerment Neuroscience Lab in Stanford Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, serves as Director of Research at Stanford’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE), and is Scientific Lead of the Stanford Belonging Project. Her research employs portable dual-brain neuroimaging (fNIRS hyperscanning) and advanced computational modeling to elucidate the neural and inter-brain signatures of high-impact, purpose-aligned teams. Shalmali Bane

BioShalmali Bane is doctoral student in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. She is a trainee with the Center for Population Health Sciences, in the Stanford School of Medicine. She works with Dr. Suzan Carmichael on examining social determinants of reproductive health and perinatal outcomes. Shalmali grew up in India and received a biology degree from Stanford, with a focus in Neurobiology. Prior to graduate school, she was a healthcare consultant with the Analysis Group, where she focused on survey research, literature reviews, and budget impact modelling. She is passionate about equity and inclusion initiatives and serves on her departmental JEDI committee. She hopes to meld all of these experiences together in her current work: applying rigorous epidemiological methods to study how factors like socially determined race/ethnicity and socio-economic position impact the experiences of birthing persons.

BioBhabna Banerjee is an illustrator and data journalist based in Vancouver, Canada. She graduated from York University with a BFA in Media Production and Visual Journalism and was named The Global Leader of Tomorrow Scholar from the class of 2020. Her interests include environmental policy, biodiversity loss, climate migration, and extreme weather. She has previously covered climate and environmental issues for publications such as Forbes, World Economic Forum, El Tecolote, Courrier International, and the Knight Foundation. In 2022, she founded Planet Anomaly to improve climate literacy and make environmental news more accessible through illustrated data visualizations. Since then, she has helped environmental organizations communicate their data and research and has collaborated with the Rocky Mountain Institute, Climate Central, Datawrapper, and Down to Earth. At Stanford, she will continue to develop innovative ways of visual storytelling that make climate reporting more comprehensible.

BioDr. Narges Baniasadi is founder and executive director of Emergence program at Stanford. She develops educational and translational programs for improving societal health through entrepreneurship. She is also Adjunct Professor with the Department of Medicine where she teaches impact entrepreneurship in the areas related to Prevention and Health Equity. Narges has led multiple initiatives and businesses in the intersection of Technology and Life Sciences for more than a decade. She founded Bina, a pioneering Bioinformatics company, out of a decade of research at Stanford and UC Berkeley. Bina developed high performance computing platforms and AI solutions for cancer research and genomics analysis. Later, upon acquisition of Bina by Roche, she led the clinical software development and AI research as VP of Informatics at Roche Sequencing until 2018.

Matei Banu, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Neurosurgery
BioDr. Matei Banu is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon at Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Banu specializes in treating brain, skull base, and pituitary tumors. He also specializes in the management of the buildup of brain fluid (hydrocephalus) and related conditions. He is skilled in minimally invasive techniques, such as microscopic surgery (using microscopes and tiny instruments to repair small structures) and endoscopic techniques (using a thin, flexible tube to take pictures inside the body).
Dr. Banu often collaborates with rhinologists (doctors who diagnose and treat diseases of the nose and sinuses), head and neck surgeons, and otologists (doctors who diagnose and treat ear-related conditions). His goals are ensuring each patient receives comprehensive care and providing precise, compassionate treatment that enhances each patient’s quality of life.
His research interests include developing personalized treatment strategies for brain and skull base cancers. Dr. Banu is exploring how aggressive tumors grow, resist treatment, and evade the immune system. Using tumor samples from patients, Dr. Banu and his team are testing novel drugs to create more effective therapies.
Dr. Banu has published his research in several peer-reviewed journals, including Lancet Oncology, Cell, Nature Cell Biology, and Nature Communications. He has also contributed book chapters on topics like pediatric endoscopic skull base surgery and drug delivery for brain tumors. He has shared his findings at numerous national and international meetings in neurosurgery and oncology.
Dr. Banu is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Skull Base Society, and the Society for Neuro-Oncology. -
Jean Jingzhi Bao
Clinical Associate Professor, Surgery - General Surgery
BioDr. Jean Bao is a board-certified, fellowship-trained Breast Surgical Oncologist. She is a clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Bao’s clinical interests include treatment of men and women who have breast cancer, benign breast disease, genetic mutations, family history of breast cancer, or other breast cancer risk factors. Procedures performed by Dr. Bao include skin- and nipple-sparing mastectomies, partial mastectomies, oncoplastic procedures, benign breast lesion excisions, axillary node dissections, and sentinel lymph node biopsies. Dr. Bao is certified in breast ultrasound and utilizes this technology to visualize and biopsy breast masses.
She completed a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center under the mentorship of one of the world’s foremost experts in the field. Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Bao practiced at the University of Chicago as an assistant professor of surgery in the Breast Center.
Dr. Bao works closely with medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, genetics, and other breast cancer specialists in a multidisciplinary setting to provide high quality, evidence-based, and individualized care. Dr. Bao is a strong advocate for patient education and empowerment and strives to deliver compassionate care to patients and their families.
Her research has focused on the management of breast cancer in older patients, male breast cancer, high-risk breast cancers, and axillary lymph node management after preoperative chemotherapy. She also has strong research interests in intraoperative 3D breast imaging, the benefits and risks of prophylactic mastectomy, fertility issues in young women with breast cancer, and the role of endocrine therapy in breast cancer. She has delivered presentations on a wide range of topics related to breast cancer at national and regional meetings. The results of her research have been published in JAMA, Annals of Surgical Oncology, Breast Journal, Clinical Imaging, and elsewhere.
For her scholarship and research achievements, Dr. Bao has won numerous honors and awards. She earned the Excellence in Teaching Award twice from the University of Chicago Department of Surgery. She was also named a Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium Scholar, where she joined other medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists who lead in the field.
Dr. Bao is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She is a member of Breast Disease Site Work Group in the Society of Surgical Oncology, and serves as the society’s external liaison to the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria Breast Imaging Panel. She previously held the position of chair of the Cancer Committee at University of Chicago Medicine. -

BioZhenan Bao joined Stanford University in 2004. She is currently a K.K. Lee Professor in Chemical Engineering, and with courtesy appointments in Chemistry, Bioengineering and Material Science and Engineering. She was the Department Chair of Chemical Engineering from 2018-2022 and in 2025. She founded the Stanford Wearable Electronics Initiative (eWEAR) and is the current faculty director. Bao received her Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from The University of Chicago in 1995 and joined Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies. She became a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in 2001. Professor Bao currently has more than 800 refereed publications and more than 80 US patents with a Google Scholar H-index 237.
Bao is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Inventors. Bao was elected a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Science in 2021. She is a Fellow of AAAS, ACS, MRS, SPIE, ACS POLY and ACS PMSE.
Bao is a member of the Board of Directors for the Camille and Dreyfus Foundation from 2022. She served as a member of Executive Board of Directors for the Materials Research Society and Executive Committee Member for the Polymer Materials Science and Engineering division of the American Chemical Society. She co-founded C3 Nano Co. (acquired by Du Pont) and PyrAmes, which have produced products used in commercial smartphones and hospitals, respectively. Multiple inventions from her lab have been licensed and served as foundational technologies for several additional start-ups.
Bao was a recipient of the VinFuture Prize Female Innovator 2022, ACS Award of Chemistry of Materials 2022, MRS Mid-Career Award in 2021, AICHE Alpha Chi Sigma Award 2021, ACS Central Science Disruptor and Innovator Prize in 2020, ACS Gibbs Medal in 2020, the Wilhelm Exner Medal from the Austrian Federal Minister of Science in 2018, the L'Oreal UNESCO Women in Science Award North America Laureate in 2017. She was awarded the ACS Applied Polymer Science Award in 2017, ACS Creative Polymer Chemistry Award in 2013 ACS Cope Scholar Award in 2011. She is a recipient of the Royal Society of Chemistry Beilby Medal and Prize in 2009, IUPAC Creativity in Applied Polymer Science Prize in 2008.
In Stanford, Bao has pioneered molecular design concepts and fabrication processes to advance the scope and applications of skin-inspired electronics. Her group discovered nano confinement effect of conjugated polymers in polymer blends, which established the fundamental foundation for skin-inspired electronic materials and devices. Her work has resulted in new materials and device solutions for soft robotics, wearable and implantable electronics for precision health, precision mental health and advanced tools for understanding neuroscience and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Building on chemical insights, her group has developed foundational materials and devices that enabled a new generation of skin-inspired soft electronics. They provide unprecedented opportunities for understanding human health through developing monitoring, diagnosis and treatment tools. Some examples include: a neuromorphic e-skin that can sense force and temperature and directly communicate with brain, a wireless wound healing patch, a soft NeuroString for simultaneous neurochemical monitoring in the brain and gut, soft high-density electrophysiological recording array, a meta-learned skin sensor for detailed body movements, a reconfigurable self-healing electronic skin. -
