Nichole Tyson MD
Clinical Professor, Obstetrics & Gynecology
Clinical Professor (By courtesy), PediatricsBioNichole Tyson MD is a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She specializes in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (PAG). For over 20 years, Dr. Tyson has partnered with girls and their families as they journey from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. Dr. Tyson enjoys solving complex problems as well as common concerns that can be overlooked and challenging to girls and young women. She is been recognized locally, nationally and internationally a leader in the field and skilled and experienced surgeon caring for patients with endometriosis, adnexal masses and variations in urogenital anatomy.
As a Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecologist, she specializes in problems such as abnormal periods, hormone management and adolescent contraception in people with underlying medical conditions, pelvic masses, differences of sex development and complex utero-vaginal anatomy.
She has been a leader on a number of national medical committees, including Vice President of the North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (NASPAG), immediate past-chair of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopy (AAGL) Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology special interest group and associate member of the Contraception Committee for the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO). She is an active contributor to the peer reviewed literature in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, obstetrics and gynecology, contraception and laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Tyson also has extensive experience with the consumer press as an adolescent gynecology expert for numerous online articles in such magazines as Seventeen, Self and NY Times.
She is the Chief of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at Stanford Children's Hospital and the Director of Mentorship and Coaching for the Ob/Gyn Department. She is passionate about teaching, mentorship and coaching, working closely with medical students, residents and fellows. She is an innovator in education, both developing and and implementing numerous curricula in Gynecology, Pediatric Adolescent Gynecology, Simulation education, Surgical Coaching and Leadership and Professionalism. She is currently working as a chief editor for two PAG textbooks-one titled PAG essentials and the other, the first ever PAG surgical textbook, both due for publication in 2024-2025. -
Tulio Valdez, MD, MSc

BioDr. Tulio A Valdez is a surgeon scientist born and raised in Colombia with a subspecialty interest in Pediatric Otolaryngology. He attended medical school at Universidad Javeriana in Bogota Colombia before undertaking his residency in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in Boston. He completed his Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital (2007), Houston and obtained his Master’s in Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Connecticut.
Clinically, Dr. Valdez has an interest in pediatric sleep apnea. He has a special interest in the management of sinus disease in cystic fibrosis. Dr. Valdez has co-authored one textbook and numerous book chapters and scientific manuscripts. Dr. Valdez continues his clinical research in these areas, particularly with a focus on aerodigestive disorders.
Scientifically, Dr. Valdez has developed various imaging methods to diagnose otitis media and cholesteatoma a middle ear condition that can lead to hearing loss. He was part of the Laser Biomedical Research Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research includes novel imaging modalities to better diagnose ear infections one of the most common pediatric problems. His research has now expanded to include better intraoperative imaging modalities in pediatric patients to improve surgical outcomes without the need for radiation exposure.
Dr. Valdez believes in multi-disciplinary collaborations to tackle medical problems and has co-invented various medical devices and surgical simulation models. -
Praveesh Valissery

BioPraveesh was raised in Chennai, India and studied Biotechnology at the Loyola College while minoring in English Literature. He received his Ph.D. from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi, India). He has experience in organic chemical synthesis and molecular biology. With Prof. Suman Kumar Dhar, he studied the cell cycle of the malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) and worked on the optimization of water-soluble Artemisinin nanopreparations in the mouse model of malaria (Plasmodium berghei). His PhD thesis concerned “The design, discovery and improvement of novel and existing antimalarial compounds”. He helped in the synthesis and characterization of a novel class of hybrid antimalarial drug, CQ-CFX.
In the Egan lab, Praveesh is interested in exploring essential protein-protein interactions taking place at the interface between the malaria parasite and the red blood cell at key moments during invasion. His research involves the use of genome editing tools, including lentiviral and adenoviral vectors to modify hematopoietic stem cells and generate genetically modified red blood cells by ex vivo erythropoiesis.
In the long term, he hopes to
1. acquire enough skill to study and develop antimalarial vaccine antigens and improve existing vaccine formulations.
2. employ a reverse genetics approach to understand mechanisms that facilitate parasite invasion using genetically modified red blood cells. -
Keith Van Haren, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research group is dedicated to developing novel interventions for children at risk for neurodegenerative disorders. We are focused primarily on multiple sclerosis and X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, both of which involve inflammatory and metabolic disruption to brain myelin. We are particularly interested in the role of childhood nutrient deficiencies in disease mechanisms and prevention.

David Vu

BioDr. Vu is a pediatric infectious diseases specialist who is researching human responses to dengue virus and malaria infections. He performed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, San Diego, and obtained his medical doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He trained in general pediatrics at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, and in pediatric infectious diseases at Emory University School of Medicine. His present studies on pediatric dengue and malaria co-infection are supported by an NIAID Career Development Award (K23 AI127909) and a Instructor K Award Support Program Award from the Maternal & Child Health Research Institute and Department of Pediatrics.

Bing Wang
Postdoctoral Scholar, Stem Cell Transplantation
BioMy academic training and research experience have equipped me with multidisciplinary skills and knowledge of molecular biology and immunology.
I led two projects when I was an undergraduate, in which I got primary academic learning. My team member and I investigated the bacteria content in drinking water from two types of machines that are commonly used in colleges under the guidance of our experimental microbiology teacher Zhihong Zhong. Secondly, we produced a hybridoma cell line secreting monoclonal antibody against the core antigen of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) to develop an ELISA kit for the detection of HCV under the guidance of Dr. Rushi Liu and Minjing Liao.
Thereafter, as a Ph. D. candidate at Xiaoming Feng’s lab, my research primarily focused on understanding the biology of regulatory T cells (Treg) and CD11c+ myeloid cells using cutting-edge single-cell sequencing and conditional knockout mice under healthy and disease conditions. We first revealed the heterogeneity and bifurcated differentiation pathway of human Tregs from normal donors and transplanted patients at the single-cell transcriptome level. A subsequent first and corresponding author publication identified a key innate responsive protein in CD11c+ alveolar macrophages, NRP2, that protects mice from lung injury via promoting the phagocytosis of neutrophils. I also participated in two projects regarding the role of a serine/threonine kinase, LKB1, in mice CD11c+ dendritic cells from lymphoid tissues and adipose tissue with diet-induced obesity. These academic experiences guided me into a strong passion and independent capacities for biomedical studies.
For my postdoctoral training, I will focus on developing Treg therapies and genetic stem cell therapy to cure patients with IPEX syndrome (a severe autoimmune disease) at preclinical and clinical stages, and other immune disorders. My sponsor Dr. Rosa Bacchetta is a well-known leader in treating IPEX patients and developing Treg therapies. My co-mentor Dr. Maria Grazia Roncarolo is a well-recognized pediatric immunologist and also one of the pioneers in the stem cell and gene therapy field, who discovered the type 1 regulatory T cells or Tr1 cells and translate the scientific discoveries into novel Treg therapies. Both of them have an excellent record of training postdoctoral fellows. The proposed projects will provide me with great opportunities in cutting-edge technology and translational research and outline a set of career development including grant writing, public presentation, and lab management, which will enhance my ability to become an independent investigator and help me to reach my goal of developing efficient and safe Treg therapies for a wide range of immune disorders and associated human diseases. -

His other professional experiences include working as a management consultant with McKinsey and Company and serving as the project manager for Taiwan's National Health Insurance Reform Task-force. Andy Wen
Clinical Associate Professor, Pediatrics - Critical Care
BioDr. Andy Y. Wen joined the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine as Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics in 2019. He received his B.A. degree in Molecular Biology & Biochemistry at Rutgers University, and his medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed a Pediatrics Residency Training Program at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Training Program at the University of California Los Angeles.
After briefly working for Kaiser Permanente Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Dr. Wen joined the Division of Pediatric Critical Care at NYU School of Medicine. He assumed the role of Bellevue Hospital PICU medical director and helped to expand Bellevue's Pediatric Trauma Program and Pediatric Critical Care Transport Services for the New York City (NYC) public hospital system, NYC Health & Hospitals. During the 2014 to 2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, Dr. Wen was a member of the Special Pathogens Program at Bellevue Hospital, which was one of only four institutions in the US to treat a patient with Ebola and helped established the National Ebola Training and Education Center (NETEC).
While at UCLA, Dr. Wen received a T32 Training Grant to perform research investigating the role of transcription factor CREB in innate immune function using a murine model for AML. At NYU, his research projects included analyzing transfusion practices in the PICU, quality improvement projects targeting patients at high risk for unplanned extubation, and exploring the utility of NIRS as an early predictor of seizure activity. Dr. Wen is a member of Pediatric Acute Lung Injury & Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) and has been involved in multi-center studies looking at critical care patients with Bronchiolitis and COVID-19. Dr. Wen is the USA Editor for Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care and has reviewed abstracts for PAS, SCCM, and AMIA. His educational efforts have included teaching Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Support (PFCCS) courses, helping develop a Pediatric Residency Simulation course curriculum, and helping develop a Point-of-Care Ultrasound course for critical care advanced practice providers.
At Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Wen is in charge of Regional Pediatric Critical Care Outreach with a goal to promote medical education and expand the Stanford Children’s Health network to improve access for sick children in need of high quality care. Dr. Wen provides clinical services at both John Muir Medical Center and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. -

Dean Winslow

BioDean Winslow, MD is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and is a Senior Fellow (courtesy) at CISAC/Freeman Spogli Institute. He has served on the Stanford faculty since 1998 and from 2003-2008 as Co-Director of Stanford's Infectious Diseases Fellowship Training Program. He was in private practice in Wilmington, Delaware where he started the state’s first multidisciplinary clinic for HIV patients in 1985. In 1988 he joined the DuPont Company where he worked both as a bench scientist on HIV drug resistance then designed the clinical trials supporting FDA approval of efavirenz. In 1999 he became Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at Visible Genetics Inc. and led the FDA clearance of the TRUGENE HIV-1 drug resistance test. Dr. Winslow joined the staff at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in 2003, where he served as Chief of the Division of AIDS Medicine and later as Chair of the Department of Medicine. In 2015 he was appointed Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine at Stanford and Academic Physician-In-Chief at Stanford/ValleyCare. He was a Resident Fellow in Robinson House 2013-2017 and was visiting faculty at Oxford University in 2017. He was Lead Physician for the US Antarctic Program of the National Science Foundation 2019-2020 based at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. In 2021 he took leave from Stanford to lead the US COVID-19 Testing and Diagnostic Working Group. He also served as CDC Senior Advisor to Operation ALLIES WELCOME and Chief Medical Officer for the Southwest Border Migrant Health Task Force before returning to Stanford in July 2022.
Dr. Winslow is a Master of the American College of Physicians, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. He is the author of 94 papers. He is,a member of the IDSA Sepsis Task Force, and previously served as Chair of the Standards and Practice Guidelines Committee.
Colonel Winslow entered the Air National Guard in 1980 and was a Distinguished Graduate of the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. He served as Commander of the 159th Medical Group 1992-1995 and was State Air Surgeon, Delaware Air National Guard 1995-2011. He served as ANG Assistant to the Commander, 59th Medical Wing, Joint Base San Antonio 2011-2014. Colonel Winslow deployed to the Middle East six times after 9/11 as a flight surgeon supporting combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. From Jan-April 2003 Colonel Winslow was the flight surgeon responsible for combat rescue operations from northern Iraq to Tikrit. In 2005 he coordinated military public health in Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In 2006 Colonel Winslow served as an ER physician at the United States Air Force 447th EMEDS (combat hospital) in Baghdad and in 2008 he served as hospital commander during the Iraq surge. He is a 2007 graduate of Air War College. He served as an infectious disease consultant to the USAF Surgeon General. In 2017 Dr. Winslow was nominated by the President to serve as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. He has 3,000 civilian and 1150 military flying hours including 431 combat hours and 263 combat sorties. He has extensive operational experience in fighter, tactical airlift, and combat rescue missions. He holds an FAA Airline Transport Pilot license.
Since 2006 Dr. Winslow has arranged medical care in the U.S. for 28 Iraqi children who have complicated medical conditions for which care is not available in Iraq. In 2015, Dr. Winslow and his wife, Dr. Julie Parsonnet, created The Eagle Fund of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, which provides aid to middle eastern and central American refugees. In 2018 he co-founded Scrubs Addressing the Firearms Epidemic (SAFE), which unites health care professionals to address gun violence in the US as a public health issue and to advocate for education, research, and evidence-backed policy to reduce gun violence. -

Jennifer Woo, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics - CardiologyBioDr. Woo is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiologist with the Adult Congenital Heart Program at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Divisions of Cardiovascular Medicine and Pediatric Cardiology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
She diagnoses and treats a range of cardiovascular diseases, with a focus on adult congenital heart disease. Dr. Woo has Level III training with the National Board of Echocardiography, a certification that recognizes her experience in complex cardiac imaging. She also has specialized expertise in cardiac MRI. Each of her patients receives a personalized, comprehensive care plan delivered with compassion.
Dr. Woo is heavily involved in adult congenital heart disease research. She has a particular interest in imaging and heart failure in adults with congenital heart disease. She has received grant funding for her work, including from the Adult Congenital Heart Association. The National Institutes of Health awarded granted her the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award.
She has published research in several peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Woo has presented her findings at regional and national meetings, including the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Bay Area Conference and the International Symposium on Adult Congenital Heart Disease.

John Fraser Wright

Dr. Wright received his PhD in 1989 from the University of Toronto (Biochemistry) for studies
characterizing the interaction of complement with IgM, and completed post-doctoral studies at INSERM
/ CENG Grenoble, France in molecular immunology focused on antigen processing and presentation. He
was awarded a CRCS/ MRC Scholarship, gaining faculty appointment at the University of Toronto. In
1996 he joined industry as a Scientist at Pasteur Sanofi, contributing there to the development of
vaccines and cancer immunotherapies, and subsequently as Director of Development and Clinical
Manufacturing at Avigen, a gene therapy company that pioneered AAV-based investigational gene
therapies for hemophilia and Parkinson’s disease. In 2004 he returned to academia, establishing and
directing the Clinical Vector Facility at the Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics at Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia, and gaining faculty appointment at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman
School of Medicine as professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Wright has contributed to
several clinical development programs in gene therapy, including for Luxturna and Kymriah, the first
gene therapies for a genetic (RPE65 deficiency) and non-genetic (CAR-T immunotherapy) disease,
respectively, approved in the United States, and for the first gene therapy clinical trial that delivered an
AAV-vectorized monoclonal antibody to human subjects for HIV passive immunity. He is a Co-founder of
Spark Therapeutics, serving there and subsequently at Axovant as Chief Technology Officer. In 2019 Dr.
Wright joined Stanford University as Professor of Pediatrics at The Center for Definitive and Curative
Medicine (CDCM). His research program aims to address key immunological barriers to gene therapy
through innovative approaches to viral vector design and generation, and to develop vectorized
antibodies for serious human diseases. -
Sean M. Wu

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy lab seeks to identify mechanisms regulating cardiac lineage commitment during embryonic development and the biology of cardiac progenitor cells in development and disease. We believe that by understanding the transcriptional and epigenetic basis of cardiomyocyte growth and differentiation, we can identify the most effective ways to repair diseased adult hearts. We employ mouse and human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells as well as rodents as our in vivo models for investigation.

Courtney Wusthoff, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy projects focus on clinical research in newborns with, or at risk, for brain injury. I use EEG in at-risk neonates to better understand the underlying pathophysiology of risk factors that may lead to worse outcomes. I am particularly interested in neonatal seizures and how they may exacerbate perinatal brain injury with a goal to identify treatments that might protect the vulnerable brain. I am also interested in EEG in other pediatric populations, as well as medical ethics and global health.
