Mildred Cho, PhD

Curtis R. Chong, MD, PhD, MPhil, FACP
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Oncology
BioDr. Chong was recruited to Stanford from the Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center, where he led MSK's launch of the early drug development and immunotherapy clinical trials program in New Jersey. At MSK, Dr. Chong was a member of the gastrointestinal oncology service and was one of two MSK physicians in New Jersey who specialized in treating melanoma. Prior to joining MSK, Dr. Chong was a member of the thoracic oncology service at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and an attending physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, all ailiates of Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Chong completed his categorical residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, his oncology fellowship at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. He has received research support from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (Young Investigator Award), Uniting Against Lung Cancer, and the American Cancer Society. Dr. Chong has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Chemical Biology, JAMA Oncology, and his research on drug discovery has been featured in the New York Times and Popular Science.
Born and raised in Honolulu where he attended public schools, Dr. Chong sang in the Honolulu Boy Choir, and was the 1993 Honolulu Star Bulletin Newspaper Boy of the Year. He received his A.B. in biochemical sciences from Harvard University magna cum laude followed by an M.Phil. in Chemistry with Sir Alan Fersht at the University of Cambridge (Emmanuel College). He then received his MD and PhD in pharmacology from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
An intrepid traveler and avid long-distance runner, Dr. Chong has visited 54 countries and completed 126 marathons in all 50 states, 18 countries, and 6 on continents. -
Alvina Dor-Yan Chu
Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Immunology & Rheumatology
BioAlvina Chu, MD, is an adjunct clinical faculty member within the Division of Immunology and Rheumatology. She has practiced rheumatology for more than 10 years, specializing in treatment of a wide range of chronic inflammatory conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vasculitis, and gout.
She holds a longstanding scientific interest in immunology, especially the role of B-cell signaling mechanisms in lupus and other autoimmune diseases.
In addition to taking care of patients in clinic and in the hospital, Dr. Chu enjoys teaching and mentoring fellows, residents, and medical students. -
Gilbert Chu

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAfter shuttering the wet lab, we have focused on: a point-of-care device to measure blood ammonia and prevent brain damage; a human protein complex that juxtaposes and joins DNA ends for repair and V(D)J recombination; and strategies for teaching students and for reducing selection bias in educational programs.

Paul Danzhe Chu

His academic and research interests lie primarily in Natural Language Processing (NLP), Data Analysis Visualization, and he is keen on diving deeper into Large Language Models (LLMs) in the future.
His work at Stanford involves collaborating with Prof. Mert Pilanci lab members to explore innovative solutions in AI, particularly in NLP and AI Optimization. By engaging in research at Stanford, Paul aspires to contribute to the advancement of AI technologies, in understanding and optimizing AI systems for practical applications.
Prior to joining Stanford, His journey in engineering began in France, where he embarked on a preparatory class in 2019, before securing his "Diplôme d'Ingénieur" from ISEP in Paris, in 2024. -
Weihan Chu

BioWeihan Chu, M.D., is a clinical assistant professor at Stanford School of Medicine. He completed his M.D. degree at Case Western Reserve University and his Internship and Residency at Stanford Hospital. He has been working at Stanford Health Care ValleyCare Hospital as an academic hospitalist since 2015.
He serves as the Medical Informatics Director at SHC ValleyCare hospital and spends his time focused on leveraging technology to improve patient care. At SHC ValleyCare, he was the physician champion for the hospital's transition to electronic medical records and currently serves as the chair of the Physician IT Advisory Committee and the Clinical Decision Support Committee.
He interested in hospital based quality improvement projects. His past projects include the sepsis initiative at Stanford hospital and minimizing delay in obtaining outside hospital records.
In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, scuba diving, photography, and keeping up to date with the latest tech gadgets. -
Katrin Chua

On Leave from 10/01/2023 To 07/31/2024Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab is interested in understanding molecular processes that underlie aging and age-associated pathologies in mammals. We focus on a family of genes, the SIRTs, which regulate stress resistance and lifespan in lower organisms such as yeast, worms, and flies. In mammals, we recently uncovered a number of ways in which SIRT factors may contribute to cellular and organismal aging by regulating resistance to various forms of stress. We have now begun to characterize the molecular mechanisms by which these SIRT factors function. In particular, we are interested in how SIRT factors regulate chromatin, the molecular structure in which the DNA of mammalian genomes is packaged, and how such functions may link genome maintenance to stress resistance and aging.

Daniel Clark, MD, MPH

Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics - CardiologyBioDr. Clark is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiologist with the Adult Congenital Heart Program at Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical assistant professor with dual appointments in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology, Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Clark specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and the management of congenital and acquired heart disease in children. His clinical focus involves the combined use of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and other imaging techniques to evaluate patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease. Dr. Clark’s extensive training and experience with these techniques include multiple fellowships in adult cardiology, cardiovascular imaging, and ACHD.
Dr. Clark is currently a co-investigator on multiple research studies. During his fellowship, he received a training grant from the National Institutes of Health enabling evaluation of the ability of CMR to diagnose COVID-19-associated heart inflammation among college athletes. He currently uses CMR to assess heart transplant outcomes in donors positive for hepatitis C virus. Dr. Clark also received a research grant from the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Association supporting a randomized, controlled clinical trial of cardiac rehabilitation among patients with Fontan failure.
Dr. Clark serves as a peer reviewer for multiple prestigious journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA). He serves on the editorial board for both JAHA and Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging. He is also a member of numerous professional medical societies, including the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Adult Congenital Heart Association. -
John Clarke
Clinical Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
BioDr. John Clarke recently joined the Gastroenterology & Hepatology Division at Stanford University as Director of the Esophageal Program. He previously spent 17 years in Baltimore, including 9 years on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University where he was an Associate Professor and at various times Director of Esophageal Motility, Director of Gastrointestinal Motility, Clinical Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Neurogastroenterology, and Clinical Director of the Gastroenterology & Hepatology Division at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
His career has combined research, education and clinical care. His clinical areas of expertise include achalasia, dysphagia, eosinophilic esophagitis, esophageal dysmotility, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastroparesis, GI-manifestations of scleroderma and GI dysmotility. While at Johns Hopkins University, he was inducted into The Miller-Coulson Academy for Clinical Excellence, an institutional honor society for master clinicians at the time limited to 50 members across the entire university.
From an education standpoint, he has lectured in over a dozen countries, authored over 25 textbook chapters and serves on the educational affairs committee of the American College of Gastroenterology. He has also won several major teaching awards, including The Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Teaching, given to one faculty member per year in the entire School of Medicine.
His research has focused on optimization and characterization of diagnostic studies to evaluate motility disorders, as well the relationship between therapeutic endoscopic techniques and treatment of motility disorders. He was an investigator on the NIH Gastroparesis Consortium and is also a former recipient of the AGA Don Castell Award. -
Michael F. Clarke, M.D.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Clarke maintains a laboratory focused on two areas of research: i) the control of self-renewal of normal stem cells and diseases such as cancer and hereditary diseases; and ii) the identification and characterization of cancer stem cells. His laboratory is investigating how perturbations of stem cell regulatory machinery contributes to human disease. In particular, the laboratory is investigating epigenetic regulators of self renewal, the process by which stem cells regenerate themselves.

Shoa L. Clarke, MD, PhD

BioDr. Clarke is a preventive cardiologist and a physician-scientist focused on disease prevention. He earned his undergraduate degree in human biology from the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University before obtaining his MD and PhD (genetics) from Stanford University School of Medicine. He has completed clinical training in internal medicine (Brigham & Women’s Hospital), pediatrics (Boston Children’s Hospital), and cardiovascular medicine (Stanford Hospital), and he is board certified in all three specialties. His research is focused on 1) understanding complex disease genetics in diverse populations, 2) integrating monogenic and polygenic risk with clinical risk, 3) large-scale phenotyping using the electronic health record and medical images. His clinical practice focuses on identifying risk factors for cardiovascular disease with the goal of promoting health and longevity through evidence-based personalized treatment. He is interested in developing family-centric approaches for the treatment of adults and children carrying genetic risk for disease.

Elana Trubowitch Cohn

BioDr. Elana Cohn (She/Her) is a board-certified Family Physician, with a love for caring for the whole person and the entire family.
She completed her bachelor's degree in Neuroscience and Behavior at Barnard College, after which she worked as a Health Outreach coordinator on a mobile medical van providing care to the homeless population in NY, which sparked her love for primary care. She received her medical degree at Tel aviv University, and completed her residency at Mount Sinai and the Institute for Family Health.
Her practice spans care for all ages, with an emphasis on care for marginalized populations, reproductive health, office based-procedures, and teaching. She is passionate about integrating mental health care and reproductive justice into general practice, and making care for her patients as comprehensive as possible.
Outside of the office, she loves to travel and explore new places, dance her heart out, and spend time with her family. -

John P. Cooke, MD, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur translational research program in vascular regeneration is focused on generating and characterizing vascular cells from human induced pluripotential stem cells. We are also studying the therapeutic application of these cells in murine models of peripheral arterial disease. In these studies we leverage our longstanding interest in endothelial signaling, eg by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) as well as by nicotinic cholinergic receptors (nAChR).

Joseph David Cooper

BioJoseph David Cooper attended Bucknell University for his undergraduate degree with a dual major in Biology and Philosophy. He graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine and went on to complete his Internal Medicine residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He remained at Geisinger for an additional year as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine with a focus on teaching and the education of trainees. He completed his Infectious Diseases fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center-Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease.
He began working at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center primarily in the PACE (Partners in AIDS Care and Education) and Infectious Diseases Clinics in July 2019. He has an active outreach HIV clinic at Valley Health Center in Gilroy, California once a month. He sees outpatients with general infectious diseases and provides inpatient infectious diseases consultation at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. He is actively involved in the teaching and training of Stanford University Infectious Diseases fellows and medical students, Internal Medicine residents from his home institution and Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara. Dr. Cooper holds an appointment of Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated) at Stanford University School of Medicine as of September 2020.
Dr. Cooper is an active member of the American College of Physicians, WikiGuidelines, Infectious Diseases Society of America, HIV Medicine Association, and Doctors for Drug Policy Reform. He volunteers his time and energy within these professional organizations previously serving on workgroups surrounding education, mentoring of trainees and as an ad hoc reviewer for infectious diseases and general internal medicine journals. His professional interests are broad and include HIV/AIDS, HIV PrEP/PEP, Hepatitis B and C, sexually transmitted infections, emerging infectious diseases, tropical and travel medicine, physician organization/advocacy/wellness, and the intersection of substance use with infectious diseases. Dr. Cooper is passionate about providing high quality, evidence-based care to people living with HIV and AIDS. He uses his professional expertise, passion and energy to ensure that his patients remain as well and healthy as possible.
Outside of medicine and work, you can find Dr. Cooper spending time with his wife and two daughters - hiking and exploring the Bay Area and beyond, listening to all types of music, gardening, photography, cooking new recipes, exercising and playing sports. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur laboratory operates at the intersection of functional genomics and chemical biology, with the goal of advancing novel molecular mechanisms of cancer inhibition to clinical use. We aim to 1) leverage phenotypic screening and functional genomics to determine novel anti-cancer mechanisms of small molecules, 2) develop new targeted therapy approaches against solid tumors, and 3) build a comprehensive community resource for drug repurposing discovery.

Nicole Kathleen Corso

BioNicole (she/her) received her BA in Psychology from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2016 and a MS in Health Psychology from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2018. As a masters student, she worked in the Psychiatric Affective Neuroimaging Laboratory with Israel Liberzon, MD and in the Sleep and Chronophysiology Laboratory with J. Todd Arnedt, PhD in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan. Nicole joined the Stanford Memory Lab in the Departments of Psychology and Neurology at Stanford University led by Anthony Wagner, PhD and the Mormino Lab led by Elizabeth Mormino, PhD in June 2018 to explore the memory mechanisms behind neurodegenerative disease. Nicole joined the Day Lab led by John W. Day, MD, PhD in the Department of Neurology at Stanford University in 2022 as a data and imaging research scientist to continue exploring neurological disease with the hopes of obtaining a PhD in the future. In addition to her research, she is also a grant writer for faculty affiliated with the Department of Medicine's Team Science hub.

Heather Truher Cousins

BioDr. Cousins is a clinician educator based at the Palo Alto VA. She is board certified in Geriatric Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and Internal Medicine. Dr. Cousins has an undergraduate degree from Stanford (Human Biology) and medical degree from the University of Chicago, and completed residency and fellowship at UCSF. She serves as medical director for the subacute nursing home (4C Short Stay CLC) at the Palo Alto VA, as well as for the VA Home Based Primary Care teams in Palo Alto and San Jose. Dr. Cousins serves as the primary faculty expert on geriatric palliative care for the Stanford Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program. She is closely involved with teaching the Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellows in the long term care setting and teaches the Geriatric-Palliative care thread for the fellowship core curriculum. Dr. Cousins is the VA site director for the Home Care Medicine rotation for the Stanford Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program. She also enjoys teaching history/physical and presentation skills to medical students in their second-year Practicum course. Her interests include supportive care for advanced cancer patients (especially head/neck cancer), nursing homes, home care medicine, transitions between care settings, elder abuse/neglect, and wound care.

MSTP StudentBioHenry is an MD-PhD candidate and Knight-Hennessy Scholar in the Medical Scientist Training Program and the Biomedical Informatics Program, where he is advised by Professor Russ Altman. He develops machine-learning methods to study the effects of complex genetic variation on human disease mechanisms, with focus on neurological and ophthalmic disorders. His goal is to translate genomic discoveries into disease-modifying therapies.
He received an AB summa cum laude from Harvard University in 2017, where he studied genetic mechanisms of retinal development with Professor Joshua Sanes. He then graduated with an MPhil with distinction from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. He previously worked at Leaps by Bayer and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and has received a number of awards related to research and teaching. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsInvestigation of the epidemiology of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at a public hospital. All cases of DKA at SCVMC occurring over the past 5 years have been identified. Of the 480 cases of DKA, about 1/3 are in Type II diabetics, and 2/3 in Type I diabetics. We are exploring the causes of DKA in the two groups.

Meredith Craven, PhD, MPH

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Craven’s research reflects her background and interests in psychogastroenterology (GI psychology), public health, and positive psychology. She has collaborated on projects across the spectrum of GI disorders, using quantitative and qualitative methods. She is interested in the role of biopsychosocial factors on symptom perception, experience, and related health outcomes and behaviors. In particular, she is passionate about investigating the role of patient strengths that can be fostered clinically, and mind-body practices.

BioAnthony Crimarco, Ph.D., is a Clinical Research Coordinator for the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Division at Stanford's Center Clinical for Research.
Previously, Dr. Crimarco completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Stanford Prevention Research Center and a Ph.D. in Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He also completed M.S. degrees in Management at the University of Florida and Wellness Management at Ball State University.

Saurabh Dahiya, MD, FACP
Associate Professor of Medicine (Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy)
BioDr. Dahiya is a cancer specialist with board certification in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology. He is an Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine and Clinical Director of Cancer Cell Therapy in the Stanford BMT and Cell Therapy division.
Dr. Dahiya strives to support each patient with a personalized and compassionate care plan that optimizes healing and quality of life.
Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Dahiya was an associate professor of medicine at the Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he developed the Cellular Immunotherapy Program and served as the Director of Cellular Immunotherapy in leukemia and lymphoma.
Dr. Dahiya’s research focuses on cellular immunotherapy for hematologic malignancies. He has led and participated in several investigator-initiated studies and sponsored clinical trials with cell therapies (CAR-T, CAR-NK, TCR-T) for hematologic malignancies. His research group is also involved in various translational research activities for the standard of care and research CAR-T therapy. Dr. Dahiya’s group was the first group to show the role of fibrinogen in Neurotoxicity associated with CAR-T therapy. They showed vascular injury as manifested by high fibrinogen levels is associated with higher Neurotoxicity in patients who receive CAR-T therapy. More recently his group led a novel study of assessing the immune response to COVID-19 disease. They evaluated the immune response in critically ill and non-critically ill patients hospitalized with COVID-19 disease and showed a differential immune response between the groups. Dr. Dahiya’s group also showed and established poor immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines in CART recipients. As such, passive immunity and other strategies to address the issues of immunogenicity are being explored.
He has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Blood Advances, Lancet, Leukemia Research, Neuro-Oncology, and many more. He reviews article submissions for the journals Critical Reviews in Oncology and Hematology, Thoracic Cancer, and Blood. He serves as the hematology lead editor for the journal Critical Reviews in Oncology and Hematology.
He has presented his research findings at conferences such as the annual meetings of the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and American Society for Transplantation and Cell Therapy.

Sudeb C. Dalai

BioDr. Sudeb Dalai, MD PhD is an Infectious Disease Physician at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. Currently a Clinical Assistant Professor (Teaching) at Stanford, he has taught courses and conducted research in academia/industry for over 18 years.
Dr. Dalai completed his undergraduate degree at MIT, MD and MS at Stanford, PhD in Epidemiology at UC Berkeley School of Public Health, Internal Medicine Residency at UCSD, and Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Stanford. He has received numerous teaching and leadership awards and research grants and has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications. His work has been supported by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Paul and Daisy Soros Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Dalai is an internationally-invited speaker and has been featured in multiple media outlets including ABC, NBC, Good Morning America, US News & World Report, Buzzfeed, and The Huffington Post. In 2003 he was elected to the MIT Board of Trustees and in 2020 he was voted as a Board Member of the MIT Club of Northern California. -
Millie Das
Clinical Professor, Medicine - Oncology
BioDr. Das specializes in the treatment of thoracic malignancies. She sees and treats patients both at the Stanford Cancer Center and at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. She is Chief of Oncology at the Palo Alto VA and is an active member of the VA national Lung Cancer Working Group and Lung Cancer Precision Oncology Program. In 2023, she was elected President the Association of Northern California Oncologists (ANCO), where she displays her passion for patient advocacy and also for clinician education by helping to organize Bay Area focused continuing medical education programs. She is the VA site director for the Stanford fellowship program and leads the VA thoracic tumor board on a biweekly basis. She has a strong interest in clinical research, serving as a principal investigator for multiple clinical and translational studies at the Palo Alto VA, and also as a co-investigator on all of the lung cancer trials at Stanford. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and running.

BioKaïssa de Boer, MD is a board certified pulmonologist who specializes in the care of patients with interstitial lung disease. She completed her Internal Medicine and Pulmonary training at the University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Canada where her initial interest in caring for patients with fibrotic lung disease first developed. Subsequently she completed a fellowship in Interstitial Lung Disease at the University of California, San Francisco under the direction of Dr. Harold Collard. Dr. de Boer has a special interest in patients with connective tissue disease associated lung disease and those with drug induced pneumonitis. In addition she is actively involved in the ILD training and program development of Stanford's Pulmonary Allergy and Critical Care Fellows.

BioWalter A. De Brouwer, Ph.D., is an Adjunct Professor at the Stanford School of Medicine. As a core faculty member at CERC DICE, he is the course director for “Innovation in Healthcare: from idea to incorporation,” which includes a bi-weekly presentation. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe EMPOWER study (PI: Dr Beth Darnall) is looking at how to best support patients with chronic pain on long-term opioid therapy through a slow taper (maximal duration of 1 year). Patients are randomized to taper only versus taper plus community-based pain self-management group sessions versus taper plus psychologist-led cognitive behavioral therapy for pain group sessions. Along the way alternative measures to control pain are also explored. Enrollment is open until 10/2021.
