Oliver O. Aalami, MD
Adjunct Professor, Bioengineering
BioDr. Oliver Aalami is a vascular surgeon and the Director of Digital Health at the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign. His primary mission is to advance healthcare access through digital health education, research, and translation. At Stanford, he serves as the course director for Biodesign for Digital Health and Building for Digital Health and is a co-founder of Spezi (formerly CardinalKit), an open-source framework developed to support sensor-based mobile research.
His recent work focuses on the intersection of AI and patient care, including the development of an FDA-cleared open-source computer vision model for opportunistic abdominal aortic diameter quantification on routine CT scans. Additionally, he is developing LLMonFHIR, a system that allows consumers to "chat" with their medical records (FHIR resources) on mobile devices, as well as AI-assisted coaching tools to guide patients through therapy. -

My current work involves the incorporation of the effects of ocean acidification and low-oxygen events into an abalone growth and reproduction model. Past projects include modeling indirect positive effects from fishing-induced competitive release and the effects of size-specific obligate predation on post-harvest recovery time.

Tom Abel
Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics and of Physics
BioWhat were the first objects that formed in the Universe, what is it made of, how does it work? Prof. Abel's group explores all of cosmic history using ab initio supercomputer calculations. He has shown from first principles that the very first luminous objects are very massive stars and has developed novel numerical algorithms using adaptive-mesh-refinement simulations that capture over 14 orders of magnitude in length and time scales. He has shown how the first stars galaxies form and affect everything that follows later. He has been pioneering novel numerical algorithms to study collisionless fluids such as dark matter as well as astrophysical and terrestrial plasmas. He has designed bespoke summary statistics to have interpretable, robust, efficient, summary statistics to describe spatial clustering based on fast nearest neighbor searches. His recent work is on creating digital twins of astronomical objects and the Universe as a whole in the context of the Center for Decoding the Universe. This Center leverages advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence to make sense of our Universe. He was the director of the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology and Division Director at SLAC 2013-2018.

Gillian Abir
Clinical Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioGillian Abir graduated from Glasgow University (UK) in 1998. After initially undertaking parts of surgical residency and emergency medicine residency, she completed her anesthesiology residency training in Glasgow and Sheffield (UK). Following this she undertook an obstetric anesthesiology fellowship-equivalent at Stanford University School of Medicine and is currently a Clinical Professor.
Gillian is the Associate Division Chief and Clinical Director for the Division of Obstetric Anesthesiology and the residency program coordinator for obstetric anesthesiology.
Gillian has published several manuscripts and book chapters, and is the lead anesthesiologist in the multidisciplinary obstetric simulation team. She is a member of the obstetric disaster preparedness committee and labor and delivery patient safety committee, amongst several other committees. She is the co-chair of the simulation committee and a member of the patient safety and international outreach committees in the Society of Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology.
Gillian has an interest in global health and is a member of the Board of Directors of Kybele Inc. (www.kybeleworldwide.org) for which she regularly volunteers to teach obstetric anesthesiology in other countries. -
Elias Aboujaoude, MD, MA
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Aboujaoude is a Clinical Professor, researcher and writer at Stanford University's Department of Psychiatry, where he is Chief of the Anxiety Disorders Section and Director of the OCD Clinic and the Impulse Control Disorders Clinic. Besides the compulsivity-impulsivity spectrum, his work has focused on the intersection of technology and psychology, with an emphasis on the problematic use of Internet-related technologies, mental health in a post-privacy world, and the potential for telemedicine interventions such as virtual reality and video-based therapy to increase access to care and advance global health. His books include "Virtually You: The Dangerous Powers of the e-Personality" and "Mental Heath in the Digital Age: Grave Dangers, Great Promise". Dr. Aboujaoude also teaches psychology on the main Stanford campus and at UC Berkeley. Matthew Abrahams

BioMatt Abrahams is a passionate, collaborative and innovative educator and coach. He has published research articles on cognitive planning, persuasion, and interpersonal communication.
Matt recently published the second edition of his book Speaking Up Without Freaking Out, a book written to help the millions of people who suffer from anxiety around speaking in public. Additionally, Matt developed a software package that provides instant, proscriptive feedback to presenters. Prior to teaching, Matt held senior leadership positions in several leading software companies, where he created and ran global training and development organizations.
Matt is also Co-Founder and Principal at Bold Echo Communications Solutions, a presentation and communication skills company based in Silicon Valley that helps people improve their presentation skills. Matt has worked with executives to help prepare and present keynote addresses and IPO road shows, conduct media interviews, and deliver TED talks.
He is currently a member of the Management Communication Association (where he received a “Rising Star” award) as well as the National and Western States Communication Associations. Matt received his undergraduate degree in psychology from Stanford and his graduate degree in communication studies from UC Davis. -
Ran Abramitzky

BioRan Abramitzky is the Stanford Federal Credit Union Professor of Economics and the Senior Associate Dean of the Social Sciences at Stanford University. His research is in economic history and applied microeconomics, with focus on immigration and income inequality. He is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. He is the former co-editor of Explorations in Economic History. His awards include the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, and grants from the National Science Foundation and the Russell Sage Foundation. His first book, The Mystery of the Kibbutz: Egalitarian Principles in a Capitalist World (Princeton University Press, 2018) was awarded by the Economic History Association the Gyorgi Ranki Biennial Prize for an outstanding book on European Economic History. His new book (with Leah Boustan) is Streets of Gold: America's Untold Story of Immigrant Success (PublicAffairs 2022). He has received the Economics Department’s and the Dean’s Awards for Distinguished Teaching. He holds a PhD in economics from Northwestern University.

Daniel A. Abrams
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAutism spectrum disorders (ASD) are among the most pervasive neurodevelopmental disorders and are characterized by significant deficits in social communication. A common observation in children with ASD is that affected individuals often “tune out” from social interactions, which likely impacts the development of social, communication, and language skills. My primary research goals are to understand why children with ASD often tune out from the social world and how this impacts social skill and brain development, and to identify remediation strategies that motivate children with ASD to engage in social interactions. The theoretical framework that guides my work is that social impairments in ASD stem from a primary deficit in identifying social stimuli, such as human voices and faces, as rewarding and salient stimuli, thereby precluding children with ASD from engaging with these stimuli.
My program of research has provided important information regarding the brain circuits underlying social deficits in ASD. Importantly, these findings have consistently implicated key structures of the brain’s reward and salience processing systems, and support the hypothesis that impaired reward attribution to social stimuli is a critical aspect of social difficulties in ASD.
My lab is currently conducting three research studies:
Speaker-Listener Coupling and Brain Dynamics During Naturalistic Verbal Communication in Children with Autism
We have a new study investigating how the brain processes and understands speech in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder as well as typically developing children. We are interested in understanding speech comprehension in children through anticipating incoming speech and accumulating speech information over a period of time.
Speaker-Listener Coupling and Brain Dynamics During Naturalistic Verbal Communication in Alzheimer’s Disease
In collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, our new study is exploring how the brain enables us to understand speech, with a focus on both healthy older adults and adults with Alzheimer’s Disease. We also aim to understand how the brain measures seen while we listen and understand a story are linked to language skills in these individuals.
Pivotal Response Treatment for Adolescents with High Functioning Autism Intervention Study
This is a 9-week intervention focusing on key social skills for autistic adolescents, while exploring brain plasticity using fMRI imaging. Your child will receive 1:1 sessions with our clinician, with parent training in clinic. Topics include: Greetings, Departures, Question Asking, Talking the Right Amount, Empathy, Sarcasm, and Eating and Drinking. We also coordinate with the school for additional support and opportunities to practice the targeted social skills in a club of interest. -

I believe that each patient is unique in their disease and background, that is why they deserve to be approached in an individualized way. I aspire to discover what's unknown about the pathophysiologic causes of obesity, and the mechanisms of which treatments work. My clinical and research interests in pediatric obesity found home within Stanford's distinctive position academically, medically and geographically.

Avidit Acharya

BioAvi Acharya is a professor of political science at Stanford University; a professor, by courtesy, of political economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business; and senior fellow, by courtesy, at the Hoover Institution. He works in the fields of political economy and formal political theory.
His first book, Deep Roots: How Slavery Still Shapes Southern Politics (Princeton University Press, 2018) explores the lasting impact of slavery as an institution on political attitudes in the American South. His second book, The Cartel System of States: An Economic Theory of International Politics (Oxford University Press, 2023), provides a new understanding of the territorial state system as it developed through time and exists today.
His papers have been published in both economics and political science journals and have received awards such as the Elinor Ostrom best paper award, the Gosnell Prize in political methodology, and the Joseph Bernd best paper award. He is an editor at the journal Social Choice and Welfare and an advisory editor at Games and Economic Behavior.
He earned a PhD in political economy from Princeton University in 2012 and a BA in economics and mathematics from Yale University in 2006. Before joining the Stanford faculty, he taught in the economics and political science departments of the University of Rochester. -

Maya Adam
Clinical Associate Professor, Pediatrics - Infectious Diseases
BioDr. Adam is the Director of Health Media Innovation and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford School of Medicine. Her research focuses on measuring the impact of innovative, video-based entertainment-education approaches to global health communication. She produces short, animated films and online courses on topics related to maternal child health, nutrition, mental health and disease prevention. She has designed and produced online educational content for the Stanford School of Medicine for use in their preclinical programs, continuing medical education programs and global health promotion efforts. She is the Faculty Lead for the Global Child Health Media Initiative and Associate Director of the Center for Digital Health at Stanford. She is also the lead instructor of eight massive open online courses reaching more than a million learners around the world. Adam is principal investigator on two randomized-controlled trials investigating the impact of digital global health education interventions on health-promoting behaviors. Her research is conducted in collaboration with the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health in Heidelberg, Germany. She is a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Innovation in Global Health and the author of Food, Love, Family: A Practical Guide to Child Nutrition.

Alyce Sophia Adams

BioDr. Adams is the inaugural Stanford Medicine Innovation Professor and Professor of Health Policy, Epidemiology and Population Health and of Pediatrics (by Courtesy). She also serves as Associate Chair for Health Equity and Community Engagement for Stanford Health Policy, Associate Director for Health Equity and Community Engagement in the Stanford Cancer Institute, and as Associate Director for Stanford Impact Labs. Focusing on racial and socioeconomic disparities in chronic disease treatment outcomes, Dr. Adams' interdisciplinary research seeks to evaluate the impact of changes in drug coverage policy on access to essential medications, understand the drivers of disparities in treatment adherence among insured populations, and test strategies for maximizing the benefits of treatment outcomes while minimizing harms through informed decision-making. Prior to joining Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Adams was Associate Director for Health Care Delivery and Policy and a Research Scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, as well as a Professor at the Bernard J. Tyson Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. From 2000 to 2008, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Medicine (formerly Ambulatory Care and Prevention) at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. She received her PhD in Health Policy and an MPP in Social Policy from Harvard University. She is a member of the Board of Directors for AcademyHealth and a former recipient of the John M. Connor Adams

BioDr. Connor Adams (she/they) is a Clinical Assistant Professor who received her doctorate in psychology from the George Washington University and completed her internship training at Harvard Medical School/Cambridge Health Alliance. Her clinical and research interests center on therapeutic interventions that support recovery for individuals living with serious mental illness. Dr. Adams grounds her work in a psychodynamic perspective, assisting individuals in understanding why they think, feel, and behave the way they do, in order to increase agency and choice. Dr. Adams has specialized training in comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy and provides treatment for individuals with emotion regulation difficulties. She also has specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp). Additionally, Dr. Adams provides individual and group psychotherapy within the psychiatric inpatient treatment setting. She is broadly interested in increasing access to person-centered and recovery-oriented care.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI have for some time been working on two books. The working title for one is Making, Fixing, and Tinkering, and it concerns the benefits of working with the hands. The other has a working title of Homo Demi Sapiens, and is about the balance of creativity and control in very large groups (societies, religions, etc.). I am also revising a book entitled The Building of an Engineer, which I wrote for my aging mother and self-published. It is somewhat autobiographical, and although it is available on Amazon, I do not consider it quite ready for public reading.

BioDr. Adams is doubly board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN) and Lifestyle Medicine, a Menopause Society-certified menopause specialist, and fellow of the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health. She is a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University where she is Director of the Stanford Program in Menopause & Healthy Aging. She is also a faculty affiliate of the Stanford Center on Longevity and a member of the Advisory Board of the Stanford Women's Health and Sex Differences Center.
She has been practicing for over 30 years with focused expertise on menopause management, female sexual dysfunction treatment, and lifestyle medicine to decrease the risk of chronic conditions associated with aging. Prior to her arrival at Stanford Health Care, Dr. Adams was Professor Emeritus and director of the Menopause and Sexual Medicine Program at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). She also served as Vice Chair for Education and Residency Program Director at OHSU for 14 years.
Her deep-rooted dedication to women’s health is evidenced by her leadership in numerous professional societies, committees, and boards and by the many awards she has received, including the Mentor of the Year Award from the American College of OBGYN. Dr. Adams is a recognized leader in medical education, having served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and on the national Review Committee for Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Leslie Adams

BioLeslie Adams, PhD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Public Mental Health and Population Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she focuses on addressing mental health disparities among people of African descent and marginalized communities. As a behavioral scientist, her research emphasizes the role of structural racism, gender norms, and psychosocial stressors in influencing mental health outcomes. Dr. Adams employs mixed-methods approaches, including ecological momentary assessment and passive data sensing, to explore real-time stressors like racial discrimination and their link to depressive symptoms and suicidality. Prior to her role at Stanford, she served as an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and was a David E. Bell Postdoctoral Fellow at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies.

Maheen Mausoof Adamson

Staff, Neurosurgery OperationsBioDr. Maheen Mausoof Adamson is a Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery (Affiliated) at Stanford School of Medicine, Director of Research for Women's Operational Military Exposure Network Center of Excellence (WOMENCOE), and Senior Scientist for Rehabilitation Services at VA Palo Alto Healthcare System. Adamson completed her undergraduate degrees in neurobiology and women's studies at the University of California, Irvine. She completed her Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Southern California and a postdoctoral fellowship in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. She also has a Masters in Healthcare Leadership from the School of Public Health from Brown University and is a faculty fellow for Stanford Byers Biodesign Program.
Dr. Adamson’s expertise and interests span employing translational neuroscience methodologies for diagnostic and neuromodulation treatments (such as repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)) for frequent health problems in patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), psychiatric problems, and Alzheimer's disease. She has employed advanced structural and functional imaging modalities and biomarker assessments for treatment response and diagnosis in Veteran, active military, and civilian populations with these health problems. She has been a leader in identifying sex differences in brain injury, particularly in the Veteran population. She currently serves as PI and Site-PI on numerous neuromodulation clinical trials and collaborates internationally to develop advanced diagnostic methods in neuroimaging, especially in underserved communities. As Director of the Adamson Lab, she is actively involved in translating research, such as neuromodulation and virtual and augmented reality, into clinical settings.
In her new role as Research Director of WOMENCOE, she is developing the research and education center to investigate and disseminate findings on the impact of military environmental exposure on reproductive health, cancer, psychiatric illness, cognitive decline, and other women's health issues. This network is funded by the VA Health Outcomes Military Exposure Center under Department of Veterans Affairs
Dr. Adamson is also the lead PI of ENIGMA-PAK study that aims to Leverage Consanguinity in Pakistan to Uncover the Genomic Architecture of Alzheimer's Disease. She has received recognition in national and international settings and serves on several editorial and industry advisory boards. She is also CEO and founder of her digital health startup Soof Solutions Inc which uses eye tracking for communication in individuals lacking the power of speech. She is also intricately involved in mentoring postdoctoral fellows, residents, undergraduates and high school students in STEM careers. -
Ananta Addala
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Endocrinology)
BioDr. Ananta Addala is a pediatric endocrinologist and physician scientist at Stanford University addressing access in pediatric type 1 diabetes management and outcomes. As a physician with a background in pediatric endocrinology, epidemiology, and behavioral health, she aims to build an evidence-based approach to addressing T1D disparities by systematically evaluating youth-, family-, provider-, and system-level barriers to optimal diabetes care in youth who underutilize diabetes technology.
To date, her publications have demonstrated that the disparities in pediatric T1D by socioeconomic status are worsening in the US, provider bias against public insurance is common, and public insurance mediated interruptions to diabetes technology adversely impact glycemic outcomes. She has been leading efforts to recruit and retain individuals living with or at risk for a condition in clinical trials, through engagement initiatives, her leadership at Stanford Pediatrics, and her role as co-chair of TrialNet's Recruitment Engagement Committee. -

Community Engagement in Stanford’s Department of Psychiatry, where he directs the Center for
Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing. A national leader in early intervention, Dr. Adelsheim
spearheaded the launch of allcove—a youth-driven, integrated mental health model now
expanding across California. He also co-leads PEPPNET, the national early psychosis clinical
network. His work extends to youth suicide prevention, school mental health systems, and
partnerships with Indigenous communities to strengthen culturally grounded early intervention
for tribal youth. Dr. Adelsheim’s career is grounded in building equitable, accessible mental

Dr. Adjah’s research examines the influence of racial stressors and culturally relevant practices on the psychological health, academic success, and well-being of Black adolescents and other youth of color. Dr. Adjah uses a strengths-focused and community-based lens in her research to study contextual nuance in the process and benefits of ethnic-racial socialization. She also explores factors in the family, school, and community contexts that can help youth manage the consequences of racial stress and trauma. Her current studies examine the utilization and benefits of ethnic-racial socialization across the school ecology. Dr. Adjah uses her research in each of these areas to inform the development and adaptation of programs and school-based interventions focused on managing racial stressors, eradicating mental health and academic racial disparities, and promoting resilience among historically marginalized and racially diverse children and adolescents. Dr. Adjah is a visiting scholar to the American Psychological Association RESilience Initiative and serves in other positions focused on inclusion, equity and social justice. Prior to coming to Stanford, Dr. Adjah was a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow and a University of California Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California Los Angeles in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, with affiliation in the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies.

BioDr. Adornato joined the Department of Neurology as Voluntary Clinical Faculty in 1978, (subsequently Adjunct Clinical Faculty) and has served as Director of the Neuromuscular Laboratory from 1978 until 1983, performing and interpreting nerve and muscle biopsies as well as serving as attending physician directing residents and medical students in the diagnosis and care of his private patients admitted to Stanford Hospital. Since 1986, he has been attending physician at the Palo Alto VA Hospital, directing Stanford Neurology residents and medical students in the care of veterans. He has published 69 peer reviewed papers and a number of book chapters in the field of neurology. He is currently the medical officer of a silicon valley startup exploring mobility devices for the neurologically impaired.

She is a graduate of Duke Law School and practiced as a commercial attorney with Fulbright & Jaworski in New York and Wilson, Sonsini in Palo Alto, CA. She served as General Counsel & Chief Legal Officer at IDEO for 15 years. She has been a lecturer at UC Berkeley Law, an adjunct professor at UC Law San Francisco, a guest lecturer at Duke University School of Law and a visiting professor at Harvard Law School where she taught Law, Justice and Design. She is also co-owner of Ikaros Greek Restaurant in Oakland, CA. Rochael is an angel investor, notably with investments in Another Tomorrow and Greenwood Bank. I've always believed in bridging the gap between fundamental research and its practical application in clinical settings. By amalgamating my clinical experiences with laboratory investigations, I've contributed to the development of surgical models that closely mimic human diseases and conditions. This approach enhances our understanding of how tissues respond to surgical interventions, paving the way for more effective treatments.
My research into mucosal integration of percutaneous implants and the role of Wnt signaling in implant osseointegration seeks to optimize the interaction between implants and surrounding tissues. This improved integration not only bolsters the stability of dental implants but also ensures their long-term success, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for our patients. My involvement in regenerative medicine research is driven by a passion for developing innovative strategies for tissue repair and regeneration. This work has the potential to revolutionize how dental professionals address challenges such as bone defects and periodontal tissue loss, leading to better patient outcomes.
One of my greatest joys is nurturing the next generation of dental professionals. Through my dedication to training and mentoring undergraduate and pre-dental students, I aim to equip them with advanced research and clinical skills. Fostering curiosity and empowering young minds to contribute to scientific advancements in dentistry is a responsibility I hold close to my heart.

Solmaz Ehteshami Afshar, MD

BioDr. Ehteshami Afshar is a board-certified, fellowship-trained pulmonologist with Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She earned her MSc from the University of British Columbia, specializing in health economics, before completing her residency in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital. She furthered her training at Stanford University, pursuing fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine as well as sleep medicine.
Dr. Ehteshami Afshar’s clinical expertise lies in the management of complex pulmonary conditions and sleep-related respiratory disorders, with a particular focus on patients with neuromuscular diseases. She diagnoses and treats acute and chronic respiratory failure requiring noninvasive home mechanical ventilation, sleep-related respiratory disorders including sleep apnea, and airway disease including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). She also provides care for critically ill patients in the intensive care units (ICU).
Dr. Ehteshami Afshar’s current research interests include improving the respiratory status of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as well as identifying novel treatment options for patients with tracheobronchomalacia. She has previously worked on research studies on COPD care, asthma interventions, and patient education around asthma.
Dr. Ehteshami Afshar has published her research in many peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Respiratory Research, and Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine. BioRotimi Agbabiaka is an actor, director, writer, corporate coach, and teacher of acting, solo performance, and theatre-making. Most recently, Rotimi played the EmCee in Cabaret (Center Repertory Company), Hook in Peter Pan (Panto In The Presidio), Oberon and Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Folger Theatre, Washington D.C.), and Cellphone/Narrator in If Pretty Hurts Ugly Must Be a Muhf*cka (Playwrights Horizons, Off-Broadway).
Other acting credits include roles at Yale Repertory Theatre, American Conservatory Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, California Shakespeare Theater, Marin Theatre Company, Shotgun Players, and TheatreWorks. Rotimi is a company member of Word for Word, Black Artists Contemporary Cultural Experience (BACCE), the Tony Award-winning San Francisco Mime Troupe; and is a resident artist at Brava Theater Center and the Magic Theatre.
Rotimi most recently directed The Tempest (San Francisco Shakespeare Festival), The Red Shades: A Trans Superhero Rock Opera (Z Space); and assistant directed the opera Harvey Milk Reimagined (Opera Parallèle).
As a playwright, Rotimi penned and toured the solo shows Homeless, Type/Caste (Theatre Bay Area award), and MANIFESTO; the musical, Seeing Red—co-written with Joan Holden and Ira Marlowe and produced by the San Francisco Mime Troupe; and workshopped a new play, The Soul Never Dwells In A Dry Place, inspired by the art of Romare Bearden, at Cutting Ball Theater in 2024.
Rotimi has taught acting, movement, and play creation at the Yale School of Drama, Middlebury College, Bennington College, Southern Illinois University, the California Institute of Integral Studies, and American Conservatory Theatre, among others. BioAnuj Aggarwal, M.D., is both a practicing anesthesiologist and pain specialist. Originally from Southern California, Dr. Aggarwal completed his undergraduate studies in biology with honors at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. He earned his medical degree from University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine with distinction, completing the Health Professions Education (HPE) Pathway advanced program. He completed his internship at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA. He then completed his Anesthesiology residency and Pain Medicine fellowship at Stanford Hospital, joining the faculty in 2018.
In addition to his research and clinical areas of interest of perioperative pain, orofacial pain, and the history of medicine, he is the associate program director for the pain management fellowship, theme lead and course director for pharmacology for the medical school, and associate director for Science of Medicine overseeing the teaching of the various organ blocks in the pre-clerkship curriculum. He also is an E4C (Educator for Care) faculty member, teaching clinical skills, clinical reasoning and serving as a mentor to medical students throughout their training. In addition, he is involved within the anesthesia residency education programs through various committees, mentorship of residents, and direct teaching. Nima Aghaeepour

BioNima Aghaeepour is a machine learning and artificial intelligence scientist and the Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine II Endowed Professor, and Professor of Pediatrics, and of Biomedical Data Science at Stanford University. His laboratory develops computational methods to study clinical and biological modalities in translational settings.
Dr. Aghaeepour primarily focuses on leveraging multiomics studies, wearable devices, and electronic health records to address clinical challenges in perioperative care and maternal and child health, with a particular focus on interventional settings including operating rooms, ICUs, labor and delivery, and NICUs. Prior to his faculty role, Dr. Aghaeepour earned his B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Tehran, followed by a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the University of British Columbia and a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University.
Dr. Aghaeepour is an alumnus of Stanford's Graduate School of Business Ignite program, a Biodesign Faculty Fellow, and a SPARK fellow and his laboratory provides training on the interface of academia and entrepreneurship. He regularly co-founds or serves on scientific advisory boards of startup companies and is committed to fostering entrepreneurship among his trainees through Stanford's unique programs. BioDr. Aghajanova received her medical degree from Yerevan State Medical University in Armenia, followed by residency in obstetrics and gynecology, then completed PhD in Human Implantation at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, followed with embryology training at Karolinska Institute, with an Internship in Austria.
She continued her research as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California San Francisco.
Subsequently, Dr. Aghajanova completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas and at UC San Francisco. She proceeded then with subspecialty fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at UC San Francisco. She is a respected researcher in the field of endometrial receptivity, implantation and endometriosis.
Dr. Aghajanova speaks Russian and Armenian and is very well published with over 50 peer-reviewed publications as well as numerous other oral and poster presentations and is a professional peer-reviewer for over 12 journals.

Patrick Cunningham Ahearn, MD, MAS

BioDr. Ahearn is a board-certified nephrologist. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Stanford University School of Medicine Division of Nephrology.
He specializes in providing innovative care to kidney disease and transplant patients. He develops a comprehensive, compassionate care plan personalized to each patient in his care.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Ahearn has conducted research on barriers to transplantation for patients with extended dialysis exposure, disparities in living kidney donation, and disparities in access to kidney transplant. He also has researched kidney transplant outcomes as they relate to the timing of dialysis initiation plus new pharmaceuticals for the kidney transplant population.
Dr. Ahearn has made presentations on these and other topics to the American Transplant Congress and Society of General Internal Medicine Meeting. He has published peer-reviewed articles on his research topics in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, JAMA Network Open, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, American Journal of Surgery, and elsewhere. He has published abstracts in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Dr. Ahearn has earned honors for his research and scholarship. He has received research funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Among his honors, Dr. Ahearn was on the kidney transplant team that earned the Stanford Health Care Integrated Strategic Plan Star Award. The team was recognized for delivering excellence in patient care as well as for identifying opportunities to improve care.
He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology and American Society of Transplantation.
He has volunteered his time and expertise as a board member of the Village of Hope, a transitional housing program for homeless men, women, and children in Orange County, California. Dr. Ahearn has served as a volunteer and proctor at the free clinic providing medical services to the uninsured. -

After residency, Dr. Ahmad continued at Iowa for her fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology.
Dr. Ahmad is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery in the Pediatric Division. Her clinical expertise is in Pediatric Otology and hearing loss. She is focused on children with hearing loss, cochlear implantation, cholesteatoma, and general pediatric Otolaryngology. Aijaz Ahmed, MD
Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology and Hepatology)
BioDr. Ahmed is an internationally recognized hepatologist with expertise in the treatment of acute and chronic liver diseases. He is a board-certified specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology, transplant hepatology, and obesity medicine. Currently, he serves as the Medical Director of the Adult Liver Transplant Program at Stanford University.
Dr. Ahmed graduated from Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Brown University, Providence, RI and fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stanford University. During his fellowship, he focused on clinical and research training in General and Transplant Hepatology.
For patients under his care, Dr. Ahmed remains dedicated to creating a personalized, comprehensive, and above-all a compassionate treatment plan. He outlines the diagnostic and follow-up management pathway in an individualized fashion; he updates his patients and their family/support at each step of the decision-making process; and he focuses on prioritizing the wishes of his patients and their family/support for an optimal outcome and quality of life.
Dr. Ahmed remains clinically active and has been instrumental in establishing a wide network of hepatology outreach clinics in remote and underserved regions of California and Nevada.
In addition to his patient care responsibilities, Dr. Ahmed remains committed to the educational mission of Stanford ford University. He remains deeply interested in mentoring trainees and students al levels from undergraduates to trainee physicians and junior colleagues. Dr. Ahmed has received several teaching awards during his career.
Dr. Ahmed’s research interests include 1) multidisciplinary approach to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), 2) disparities in the management of chronic liver disease, 3) improving screening and management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and 4) outcomes research in NAFLD, HCC, viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, and liver transplantation. He heads a busy and productive outcomes research team. In addition, he collaborates with basic scientists and is participating in several translational research projects at Stanford University.
He has published his findings in textbooks, abstracts, case reports, and high- profile medical journals including Gastroenterology, Journal of Hepatology, Hepatology American Journal of Gastroenterology, and other well-renowned peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Ahmed and his team has made presentations to his peers at many national and international conferences: the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, International Liver Congress, European Association for the Study of the Liver, Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver, and more. His presentations have addressed leading-edge approaches to the treatment of chronic liver disease, liver cancer, and liver failure. He also has presented his insights into the gastrointestinal impact of COVID-19.
For his clinical, research, and teaching achievements, Dr. Ahmed has earned extensive recognition. His honors include being named as one of America’s Top Physicians by the Consumers’ Research Council of America.
He is an active member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. -
Zeeshan Ahmed
Associate Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics
BioI am an observational cosmologist, and an experimental physicist. I build ultra-low-noise detectors using superconducting and quantum sensing techniques, and use them in experiments and instrumentation for cosmology. I currently spend most of my time investigating the inflation paradigm of standard cosmology, using the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Recently, I've become interested in using the weak lensing of the CMB in conjunction with galaxy surveys to study the growth of large-scale structure in the universe.
I received my PhD in particle astrophysics from Caltech in 2012, working on direct detection of WIMP dark matter with the CDMS-II experiment. I then shifted my effort to searching for inflation with the CMB. I was a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford through 2015 before being appointed as a Wolfgang Panofsky Fellow at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. In 2017, I won a DOE Office of Science Early Career Award to work on new signal transduction and superconducting multiplexing techniques for next-generation CMB cameras. In 2020, I was appointed as a Lead Scientist at SLAC, and in 2023, I was appointed Associate Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics at Stanford and SLAC. I serve as CMB department head in the Fundamental Physics Directorate at SLAC. I also serve as scientific project manager for the bring up of SLAC's Detector Microfabrication Facility for the development of superconducting and quantum sensors and devices. -

BioAlex Aiken is the Alcatel-Lucent Professor of Computer Science at Stanford. Alex received his Bachelors degree in Computer Science and Music from Bowling Green State University in 1983 and his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1988. Alex was a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center (1988-1993) and a Professor in the EECS department at UC Berkeley (1993-2003) before joining the Stanford faculty in 2003. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur goal is to develop and clinically implement new technologies for high-precision and noninvasive intervention upon the nervous system. Every few millimeters of the brain is functionally distinct, and different parts of the brain may have counteracting responses to therapy. To better match our therapies to neuroscience, we develop techniques that allow intervention upon only the right part of the nervous system at the right time, using technologies like focused ultrasound and nanotechnology.

He has searched for WIMP dark matter particles since the early 1990s, first with the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search and more recently with the LUX and LUX-ZEPLIN projects. His current interests are in extending the sensitivity to dark matter through expanding and improving time projection chambers that use liquid xenon as a target medium. Together with Tom Shutt, he has led the establishment of a Liquid Nobles Test Platform at SLAC. The group specializes in detector development, xenon purification, and simulations, and has a broad range of opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to participate in hardware and software development, as well as data analysis.

Teddy J. Akiki, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Akiki's research focuses on advancing precision psychiatry through computational neuroscience approaches. His work centers on developing transformer-based foundation models for functional neuroimaging that can predict treatment responses and symptom trajectories in psychiatric disorders. Using multimodal connectomics (combining structural, functional, and diffusion MRI), he maps neural circuits underlying stress-related conditions, with particular emphasis on identifying dysconnectivity patterns in PTSD and depression. Dr. Akiki develops novel analytical methods for neuroimaging data, including network-restricted metrics and community detection frameworks optimized for functional time series. His translational work includes neuroimaging-augmented clinical trials of novel therapeutics for treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders, with the goal of implementing data-driven, personalized interventions based on individual neurobiological profiles.

Ahmad Al-Moujahed, MD, PhD, MPH
Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology (Research/Clinical Trials)
BioDr. Ahmad Al-Moujahed is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with Stanford Health Care. He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Al-Moujahed specializes in caring for retinal and macular diseases, as well as inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs), a group of genetic diseases that cause vision loss. He also specializes in vitreoretinal surgery to treat a range of diseases that affect vision. He is one of the only ophthalmologists in the nation with dedicated vitreoretinal surgery and IRD training and expertise. He is committed to providing compassionate care that improves eye health, vision, and quality of life.
As a physician-scientist, Dr. Al-Moujahed’s research focuses on investigating the origins of IRDs and developing novel treatments for these conditions. He is also involved in clinical trials exploring innovative experimental treatments for IRDs.
He is also deeply interested in the intersection of ophthalmology, public health, and global health. He has contributed to the development of educational programs for medical students and vision care initiatives in Syria and Lebanon, with the goal of expanding access to eye care in underserved communities.
Dr. Al-Moujahed has published his research in peer-reviewed journals, including Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, Experimental Eye Research, Stem Cell Research, Scientific Reports, and American Journal of Ophthalmology. He has also published in Ophthalmology Retina; British Journal of Ophthalmology; European Journal of Ophthalmology; Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina; and the International Journal of Retina and Vitreous.
He has also presented at several national conferences, including meetings of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Retina Society.

Todd Alamin, MD, FAAOS
Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Alamin is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon and spine surgeon at Stanford Health Care Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. He is director of the Spine Surgery Fellowship Program and the Minimally Invasive Spine Center and a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Alamin completed his spine care and surgery fellowship training at Stanford University School of Medicine/St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Dr. Alamin specializes in advanced, minimally invasive treatments for a range of conditions affecting the spine. He is skilled at relieving pain that results from spinal stenosis, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, and traumatic injuries. He combines extensive expertise with decades of experience to deliver innovative, personalized care to each of his patients.
Dr. Alamin’s research interests include effective treatments for vertebral fractures, spinal deformities, scoliosis, herniated discs, and spondylolisthesis (when a vertebra slides out of place). As principal investigator for multiple clinical trials and research studies, Dr. Alamin has explored nerve ablation as a treatment for chronic low back pain and motion-preserving lumbar fusion techniques. He uses state-of-the-art medical devices, implants, and technology to make spine surgery more effective and help his patients move without pain.
Dr. Alamin is known around the world for the treatment of spine disorders and injuries. He has published more than 65 articles in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Spine, The Spine Journal, Clinical Spine Surgery, International Journal of Spine Surgery, and Journal of Orthopaedic Research. He has also written several book chapters that focus on diagnosing and treating spine conditions.
A recognized leader in innovative spine surgery techniques, Dr. Alamin has invented dozens of medical devices, methods, and techniques for spine surgery. He holds a number of patents for his inventions, many of which have revolutionized back pain treatments. Physicians around the globe use his techniques and devices to help their patients with spine conditions.
Dr. Alamin has been invited to present at conferences around the globe about spinal fusion procedures, novel techniques to treat spinal stenosis, and the latest medical devices to treat degenerative spondylolisthesis. He has lectured at annual meetings for the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, and the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine.
